No matter how woke a man is there are particular physical experiences that women go through that even the most empathetic (cis) men will never truly understand – giving birth and periods. Sure there are guys out there who have taken on labor simulator challenges to feel what childbirth is like as well as others who have tried ‘menstruation machines’ but nothing compares to the real experience, or so we thought.

Apparently, periods are small potatoes to other forms of bleeding – for example, a skinned knee. A guy took to Twitter to not only imply that women overreact about cramps, but also that when it came to pain nothing quite compares to scrapping your knee during a game. Well sir, in that case, can you imagine being a female athlete? In response to his ludicrous statement, women across the internet didn’t hesitate to put him in his place.

This Twitter user received a heavy flow of backlash after he tweeted a comparison between period pain and a skinned knee

Nameless Twitter user @_sargee tweeted out a photo recently of a soccer player in the process of falling and scraping their knees.

With a caption that mansplained how women needed to stop complaining about their period pains until they had experienced this kind of pain.

And got destroyed in the comments by women everywhere

Period pain can result in more than just irritating cramps. Many women suffer from dysmenorrhea, which results in debilitating periods. Symptoms of this include intense cramping along with, back pain, nausea, diarrhea, and headaches. Cramps are caused by too many prostaglandins, a chemical produced by the uterus that causes the muscles to tighten and relax.

As some women in the comments pointed out there are female athletes who have experienced both types of pain and agree that period pain is worse. Interestingly enough female athletes on a professional level or with rigorous workout regimens can stop having a period altogether – an occurrence called hypothalamic amenorrhea. Hormones in the brain send a signal that tells signal hormones in the ovary not to produce estrogen and progesterone. The cause behind this is still unclear but so far it has been deduced it is the bodies way of saying it does not have enough fat to support a pregnancy.

Once, my husband experienced testicular torsion (twisting of the sperm tubes) from a groin sprain from trying to keep up with me on the line of a restaurant we worked at. When we got to the hospital and got everything sorted out the doctor jokingly told him he has now experienced the pain of period cramping. My husband looked at me all wide-eyed and just said "Seriously!? Omg I'm sooo sorry." All i could do was laugh along side the doctor.

I would have thought testicular torsion pain would be similar to ovarian torsion pain, which can be even worse than dysmenorrhea (painful periods/killer cramps). Not all periods are as painful as that, only 10% of them.

Men and women both get cluster headaches and they have been described many times as "one of the worst pains a person can experience" and are said by female sufferers to be worse than childbirth. This man is being a wuss, yes, but cluster headaches have beaten broken bones, grazed-off skin, burns, nerve pain, endometriosis, operations on various parts of me... I'll probably get accused of going 'off point' by some pedant but here is a pain which is generally considered to be the worst and men get them too. There is pain that 'levels the playing field'.

Can confirm. Get cluster headaches weekly. They have been known to cause suicides and injury as people go to extreme measures to escape them.

Why does the introductory post have to include "(cis) men"? Is it just trying to be inflammatory?

Karen Elizabeth

5 years ago DotsCreated by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

Because many trans men still have periods and experience the cramps that go along with them, or did experience them before undergoing surgery and can remember them and sympathize appropriately. If you just say "men don't experience this" you are erasing the experience of the men who *have* experienced it because they were born with a uterus to shed the lining of.

WTF? Is a skinned knee the worst pain this twit has ever suffered? I mean yeah, it stings a little. Then you slap some germolene on it and keep playing. I'm lucky enough to have pretty easy periods, and they still hurt a lot worse than freaking turf burn.

Actually I will admit a badly scraped knee can be extremely painful. I once tripped going up stairs with a very rough sisal/coir carpet. Took a chunk out of my knee leaving exposed nerves. It was about the size of a 10p but even being exposed to air hurt.So deep I had to get medical attention because of the pain and it took a couple of weeks to heal over. But that was ONCE. Periods are every month for around 50% of your life.

I agree with the original comment that the photo does not look like an adult footballer's knee - more like a woman. Hairless pale and softer. I wonder how smal his ACTUAL scrape was? I used to have horrendous pain that laid me up for a couple of days most months as well as dysmenorrhea. I would gladly have swapped ONE period for a scraped knee, the pain would be less and would be gone in the same length of time.

Apparently scraped knees cause pelvic dislocation, internal muscle spasms, the expulsion of congealed blood and rotting tissue(with a possibility of Toxic Shock under certain circumstances), massive hormone storm, possible diarrhoea, and internal anxiety and humiliation over having to go about daily life as if nothing is different. For anywhere between 3-7(sometimes more). Roughly every month. For decades. Oh, you scraped a few layers of skin off your knee? And will be given dressings and painkillers and sympathy from everyone? And it will heal over in about a month? notsurpris...754c46.jpg notsurprisedkirk-5c91f25754c46.jpg

Turf burn to the knees? I took a pavement burn to my face flying over the handlebars of a bike when the rear brake failed and only the front brake worked and I took a pavement burn to the knees falling off my skateboard when some douche bag hit the back of my board with the front tire of his bike. This guy thinks females can't get skinned knees? Seriously? Does he think we can only fall daintily onto pillows or something?

what an idiot...I am happy I read al the comments basically saying what this air head needs to hear. When I trained in the army we did a ruck march for 10 miles and I sprained my ankle and the entire back of my heel peeled off. Period cramp pain can still be worse. When I was ten and I first started getting the cramps, we'd be in line for lunch and I was in so much pain I could not walk until it stopped. But I think women experience more pain than men, even while on their periods and getting cramps. Okay I'm done. You can keep your little knee sprain and go back to your planet clueless where you help your team lose while playing soccer.

My friend fell off her bike, skinned both knees/calves and her hands then ran a 200m and 400m sprint the next morning. I was tackled in rugby and dislocated my knee, was walking within the hour and went back to school and played rugby again the next day. I have also sprained my ankle over ten times and had whooping cough. Another friend has broken her arm three times. None of those injuries were as painful as the cramps we experience. Also I dislocated my knee again the other day, don't worry I'm fine.

When I was 8 I skidded on my bike over loose gravel on the road. I was wearing shorts at the time and I skinned both my legs front and back and then had to walk home with my legs bleeding. A year later I picked up a cat to bring home because I wanted to show her to my cat loving sister. When the cat saw my dog in her bid to get away she clawed my face to ribbons just narrowingly missing my eyes. The absolute pain I experienced in those incidences pales in comparison to my period pain.

These kind of "whose pain is greater" competitions will end when we finally invent how to project feelings/pain/etc. from one brain to another. No one will say "Oh, your illness cannot be that bad", because the answer will be "Wanna try? We can hook up that neural connection for a day if you want." Can't wait.

There is a birth giving simulator already right? to make one experience how painful giving birth is especially guys who whines that women talks too much about it, then came this another one about period, I know it's excruciating every month for girls to handle since I always experience it from my sister how she cries and loss appetite that all day she just wants to be alone and curls in the bed. When I was 11, I was skateboarding down a hill in a local park when a stick got caught under the front axle. I flew off and landed on the side of my right thigh after sliding down the hill on it for 25-30 feet. It took almost an hour to get the all the pebbles out of my flesh. I still have the mark and I'm almost 50. And yet, I've had cramps that have had me in bed for days. I imagine that migraines, bones breaking, being shot, or childbirth all feel a lot worse, though!

I got my first scraped knee at age 3. In high school, my period cramps (due to endometriosis) were so severe that the teachers would regularly assign someone to take me to the nurse's office 'before she faints again' because all the color had drained from my face (and in retrospect, was probably flowing from my body).

I later had a home birth and it was terrible and I had back labor. I was a gymnast for years when I was young and ended up becoming a full contact taekwondo instructor. I had broken and dislocated bones. I remember once dislocating a toe while fighting a match. I just reached down, pushed the toe back in and kept fighting. I also suffered a dislocated hip in a match. Many of these injuries occurred simultaneously while in the midst of my period with cramps. I just want to call that guy names. But my experience with men has been that most have very low pain tolerance as compared to any woman.

When I was a teen, my menstrual pains were so bad I could not even move. And they came unexpectedly! I remember walking home from HS and about half way home it hit me so hard I could not walk anymore and had to lean on a building wall so I did not fall. Compare that to skinned knees!

I used to get menstrual cramps (starting at age 14) that were worse than any pain I felt during childbirth and were accompanied by nausea and sometimes diarrhea. I feel that isn't entirely natural, but that's what happened. After having my first (and only) child, it was never that bad again, but there were still some doozies. I almost fainted a couple of times. As a teenager, I would go into the basement and find a dark corner away from everyone, and curl up. Ibuprofen is the best invention ever.

I know what it feels like... actually I knew what it fell like: still have the traces on my knees from playing in the playground when I was a kid. May I also point out that scraped knees caused by playing football is up to you to play or not ... Regarding periods, Nature has cursed and/or blessed women with them. No choice in the matter!

I never understood why women were called "the Weaker Sex", maybe a couple of muscles, but we bear the kids, bear the abuse, get lower pay, and end up raising those kids, usually without much help from the father.

They get lower pay because they work less. They're the weaker sex because they're emotionally fragile wrecks

WHAT I SAID WAS THIS MAN SHOULDN'T SAY ANYTHING ABOUT A WOMAN'S PERIOD UNTIL HE HAS HAD ONE. I HAVE HAD A SCREW HOOK ALMOST PULL MY LEFT EYE OUT. FALLEN ON A WOOD STOVE SO HOT MY SKIN MELTED TO THE STOVE. A RAILROAD SPIKE THROUGH MY LEG. SCRAPED KNEES WORSE THAN THE PICTURES SHOWN. AN OVARY BURST. A BURST APPENDAGE WHILE CARRYING MY DAUGHTER INSIDE ME. A SHATTERED BACK WHEN I WAS THROWN INTO A MORE THAN 75 FOOT RAVINE. WELDING BURN TO MY EYES. I KNOW PAIN. A PERIOD IS JUST AS BAD AS SCRAPED KNEES AND THEY COME MONTHY FOR A HELL OF A LOT OF YEARS.

A man who thinks he is funny with a clearly deliberate taunt then gets funny women trying to prove how wrong he is. I am hoping the replies are all in good humour and there isn't a deliberate attempt to try and prove women have it worse. That would be crass and ridiculous if it was the case. I think skinned knees hurt like hell. Especially if you accidentally let them dry out and bend too quickly. I also believe seeing these types of posts are very popular with online viewers is painful and grating.

I am always wondering about the algorithms running behind most articles on the entire web. I watched a recent documentary where several IT people talked about Google and the one million servers running it. How we don't really think about how Google can finish our sentences in the search bar. How soon it will be running on one hundred million servers. One guy said "AI gives us data we wouldn't otherwise have access to as a result of it's capabilities. The payoff for AI is the data we provide with every tap of the keyboard. They mentioned articles like this one provides AI with emotional data about human existence. That AI has already surpassed us and has an agenda. This site is owned by Facebook. It's harvesting our data constantly. Anyways ... I submit to our robot overlords. :)

Yes, skinned knees burn, but at least to me it's not even close to the insane headaches which feel as if my head is about to expload or period cramps that feel like someone is stabbing me multiple times with a little knife that I've been experiencing. Then again everyone experiences pain differently.

I seriously hope this man never EVER breeds. If you cannot feel a sense of empathy towards women and what they go through you do not deserve to touch one at all. I've skinned my knees, broken toes, had infected wisdom teeth, and then had them removed and etc. Period pain, along with symptoms of PCOS are worse than those things. Skinning your knees while playing a game is something you decided to do. I don't decide when my body wants to shed it's lining. This guy is such an idiot.

Really one thing that drives me ladies nippick given birth all the time for well knowing a man cannot give birth. you can't complain about something to men when men won't feel it. and you are never required to have a child in first place. so there that. Secondly i read on another site periods aren't suppose to hurt however with hormons or other body parts might make it worst. Women most not all ususally don't have high torlence of pain like men do. one my lady friends will brusie way to easily. I personally think as guy i don't have high level torlence of pain. But my brother tells me otherwise i do. Its ingorant tweet. but you can't complain about pain to the oppiste sex when they never will feel or understand it.

I have hypermobility syndrome, a condition that makes my ligaments abnormally lax. I have daily joint dislocations, and still manage to go about my day. And yet, period cramps can leave me unable to function, not just from the pain, but from the nausea as well. For men that want to know what period cramps feel like, imagine a time you had a vomiting bug, combined with the pain of a bad knee dislocation, except in your abdomen and lower back. Then tell us that skinned knees are worse.

I had fibroids embedded in the muscle wall of my uterus, a large blood-filled cyst on one ovary and adhesions throughout my abdomen (endometriosis), essentially gluing my organs, intestines and bladder into one mass, as the surgeon told me. I also have passed polyps that looked like small balloons with roots. When I finally got a hysterectomy, I was never so happy to get rid of the part of my body that tortured me 5 days every month. Yeah, scraped knees - ooh, the pain!

My irritation goes in two directions. Firstly, that this guy thinks women don't scrape their knees. I genuinely can't fathom how his brain got there. But secondly, women, why are so many of us keen to sell menstruation as this incapacitating experience that takes women out of commission and renders them unable to function for at least a fifth of the time? Do they think that helps engender equality? Yes, because our bodies are designed to grow and feed babies our bodies are more complicated, take more management, and have more ways to cause us woe. But I can't see it helps to feed the notion that we're extremely badly designed and barely manage to stagger on month to month.

I think it depends on the woman. Some have it worse than others. I don’t have it bad at all, just occasionally pain that makes me want to sit motionless for an hr & distract myself. OTC med. usu. doesn’t help me at all. B/c opiates are what consistently work on me, if it were bad for me, I’d be in trouble! But maybe everybody has something bad sooner or later, e.g. I’ve had chronic mono for 12 yrs. It’s not just CFS as some people say. Beyond fatigue, it causes chills, night-sweats, chilblains (incl. under the nails), chronic other infections (incl. yeast infections w/ open wounds), & aching lymph-nodes, scalp ones sometimes having pressure erupting into open, weeping, itching, hurting sores which some people have told me they think are actually shingles. 😬 I couldn’t work at a job anymore: things are worse from the least stress, & otherwise come on at random & might last for months. But I believe the women who say their periods are torture. I wouldn’t trade the mono for them. 😄

I agree with a couple people down there in the comments that I think this guy was joking. But ofc, everyone makes a big deal out of it. Everyone's so sensitive these days calm down. But honestly, if this guy was for real, which I doubt, period pains are HELL. On my worst days, I'd describe them as feeling like a rolled up ball of molten lava in your gut with sharp objects poking out, tearing and burning the area where it is constantly with NO relief. Lying down doesn't help, sitting, or standing. Nothing. No escaping it, you just gotta suffer. I've nearly passed out twice and it's made me cry. Hot water bottles are supposed to help so one time I let the bottle burn my skin because I wanted to drown out the cramping pain with the sharp pain of my skin burning. That's how bad it got.

First of all I understand why most of the people are upset about his tweets. I am a woman myself and period cramps are not fun at all but I'm wondering why is it necessary to show a photo of this man? Seems like he has committed a crime and needs to be warned of. Isn't that a little too much? When a funny or stupid Facebook post of a person is shared on here, the tiny profile pictures aren't even shown. Again, I agree this man doesn't know what he's talking about and should shut up but why do you feel the need to show a photograph of him and make him look like a criminal. Stupidity on this level is not criminal I believe.

If this is an honest post: it's dumb. if it's a joke or whatever, it's still dumb. people are right in wanting to rip him a new one. I don't quite fully agree with the "no uterus, no opinion" mentality though. Everybody is entitled to an opinion on the matter, as long as it's with some f*****g brains. Though obviously men can't know exactly what it feels like. Someone mentioned some test where men COULD feel it. I'd be interested in experiencing that before being able to make any real comments. I'd like to end on: Why do both men and women keep feeling the need to compare eachothers suffering? (Aside from jokers like "I skinned my knee") It's not a contest. No one 'wins' here. Nor is either side exempt from feeling pain or voicing it simply because the other side has it worse.

But I have hurt both my knees like that! I fell and cut one knee completely open, about 10 cm wide, with skin tissue bubbling out and blood pouring out and down my leg in to my shoe. Which I had to throw away because it got too fkn drenched in blood. That was nothing in comparison to cramps so STFU. Any man who keeps taking about uteruses should just get a punch in the groin.

Try having testicles that get bashed almost every day, it's a much different pain from period pain, it's a gut clenching agony that lingers in the body for 5 mins, during the 1st 2 mins of which you can't even move. And don't you dare ramble on about how birth is agonising, because you only do it once or twice if you want to, getting kicked in the testes is completely involuntary (Unless you like that kind of thing). From my experience period pains and scraped knees are nothing compared to getting kicked in the balls.

Karen Elizabeth

I had an inverted uterus. Period cramps were horrendous. I remember just putting my feet in a bucket of hot water and sobbing my eyes out.

I have skidded along grass on my knees before and although it hurt it was more the shock that made me cry. My period pains are much more unbearable and I can guarantee, even though I haven't done it myself, that childbirth is even worse.

I was doing a 17km run for cancer and I broke my arm halfway, I wouldn't let anyone get the medics because the deal was if I finished the race 2000 dollars would be donated to cancer, research and better care for those with cancer finished in pain but hope and you could see the bone coming through my arm. I didn't want more people to die the same way my nana did- so if this bloke thinks that a lil scratch on a knee is painful I would like to tell him what pain truly is

I've scraped my knees so many times, you get up, put a band-aid on it, and the pain goes away. Now periods are not like that at all. Try dealing with that once a month until your like, 50 or something like that.

My new favourite things of 2019, reading comments and meme replies to stupid anti-vax mothers clucking about some preventable s**t and men talking about periods like they know what it feels like to have a dyson vacuum up the snatcheroo once a month having your guts sucked out along with the unbearable pain of stomach cramps, a*s hole cramp, lower back pain, ultra painful titties, bank breaking period protection and a murderous urge for chocolate, Netflix a duvet and ibuprofen.

This just screams 'I'm a feminist and we're having such a tough horrible time!' Try having testicles that get bashed almost every day, it's a much different pain from period pain, it's a gut clenching agony that lingers in the body for 5 mins, during the 1st 2 mins of which you can't even move. And don't you dare ramble on about how birth is agonising, because you only do it once or twice if you want to, getting kicked in the testes is completely involuntary (Unless you like that kind of thing). From my experience period pains and scraped knees are nothing compared to getting kicked in the balls.
