If the headline made you cringe, shudder, or laugh at the absurdity of it all, then you’re in the right place. You come across some of these stories that make you feel as though you’re part of the middle ages, with epic sword fighting, ale-drinking, plague-fearing, and Christian praying going rampant throughout Europe.

The notion of ‘innocence’ and ‘virginity’ as such are as useful as a burning house in the modern era, however, the values that generations have put on these terms have somehow survived, continuing their tormentous streak of incomprehensible existence, in turn affecting young women worldwide.

One woman decided to share her story and ask for some advice on the r/AmIthe[Jerk] subreddit, after her mom had gone ballistic over her showing her 14-year-old sister how to use a tampon, believing that it would compromise her ‘innocence.’ The internet was quick to respond with their own opinions on the matter.

Make sure you read to the end, consider all viewpoints, and leave your opinion on this situation in the comments below. And if you’re craving more startling content, Bored Panda has an article just for you. Now let’s get into it!

The social construct of ‘virginity’ has been around since the middle ages thanks to Christianity, however, it still continues to impact the lives of women today

Virginity—the state of never having had sexual intercourse, however, it’s a lot more complex than that, isn’t it? From being a social construct, to having a significant amount of impact upon ethics and morality, the idea of ‘innocence’ is one that continues to plague modern society, all thanks to Christianity.

Although humanity has changed a lot since the middle ages, there are some things that have stuck in the collective consciousness, one of them being this notion of ‘purity.’ There have been a lot of issues raised when it comes to virginity as a whole.

Author and sex educator Dr. Logan Levkoff argues that it is an idea designed to control how and when people (in particular girls and women) engage in sexual activity, yet, truthfully, there is no part of one’s body that is “virginity.”

The closest we get to it, when it comes to women, is the hymen, a bit of mucosal tissue that may partially surround the opening of the vagina, and that in some cases may (but not always) tear and bleed during first sexual intercourse. However, this bit of tissue comes in all shapes in sizes, some tearing them through sports, others being born with no apparent hymen at all.

But putting pure anatomy aside for a second, the whole notion of ‘virginity’ has created an imbalance between men and women for centuries, suggesting one is entitled to sex and another has to “wait.” And when we think of the ever-expanding vocabulary of sexual experiences, can we really say that losing one’s ‘virginity’ is limited to penile-vaginal intercourse? Doubtful.

The internet was left speechless that these sort of discussions are still happening, showing the importance of developing a more fluid understanding of sex as a whole

Speaking of language, ‘deflowering’ and ‘popping the cherry’ are just a few terms that make it seem like something is being taken away, almost making it seem like it changes one’s personal or physical value. As Dr. Levkoff explains, historically, the way society’s language, cultural references, and sex “education” frames sexual initiation has been sexist, heterosexist, and often harmful for all involved.

Now that we’ve touched upon some of the base issues and explored a bit of the vocabulary, let’s look at what the mother could have been worried about. If we take the notion that ‘virginity’ solely depends on the hymen, it is no wonder why some women may feel worried about using tampons, in the fear of overstretching and breaking them.

However, most people agree that using tampons does not cause a woman to lose her ‘virginity.’ Tampons may stretch the hymen a little bit, but they don’t usually stretch it open all the way, states Planned Parenthood. Continuing on the discussion, Verywell Family states that ‘virginity’ has to do with sexual activity, not the presence of a hymen or whether or not a girl uses a tampon.

Despite medical evidence, worries about using tampons or “broken” hymens persist, causing unnecessary anxiety and shame for many girls (and parents), leading to the more and more apparent truth that we need to get rid of the social definition of whether someone had sex or not in general.

This is a story full of very interesting notions, however, one thing is for certain—feminine hygiene is health care, and, as states Verywell Family, learning more about their bodies, tampon use, and what ‘virginity’ really means can help girls feel more confident about making the feminine hygiene choices that work best for them.

But that is just the tip of the iceberg of equality. Angella d’Avignon states that while having sex for the first time is a universal experience, the conditions that define ‘virginity’ are socially constructed and have been used to control and exploit women. Sociologist Dr. Laura Carpenter further explains that we are deeply threatened by “the idea that women could just go have sex with anyone that they wanted to, penalty-free.”

As we move toward a more fluid understanding of gender relations and sexuality, virginity is the last bastion of the binary that relegates sex as “inside or outside” the institution of marriage, serving as another means to limit women. All experiences of sex are valid and none of them change our worth as people. Period.

Let us know your thoughts on this, whether you agree or disagree with the internet’s ruling of the woman not being the jerk in this situation. What would you have done differently? Have a good one, see you in the next one!

"She couldn't full on swim" with a tampon? Wtf are the tampons over there be like??? Of course you can go swimming with a tampon, you don't need a "sport tampon" - tampons ARE already the sport version.

The idea that tampons "take away innocence" is directly correlated to the fact that they don't *want* young women to know anything can "go up there". Because if she knows that, she might think about letting a p*nis up there. And thus be well on her way to "sl*tdom". They want women thinking that area is a "one-way street" until marriage. They also think *anything* going up there might "break the freshness seal", rendering her "used goods". Because in their "good book", a woman is the property of her father, and then her husband - and "no one wants used goods". I've also heard the theory that a tampon will be arousing and make young women want to have s*x. Because of course a tampon is exactly like a p*nis. (eyeroll)

....I cannot imagine ANYTHING being stuck up there during my period being the least bit arousing, INCLUDING a p*nis. It's literally a bloody mess in there at that time! And for me, at least, even wiping too hard can trigger what I've been told by my gyn are essentially labor contractions.

Please don't paint all christians with the same brush. Don't liken me to uneducated fools like that mom. To my knowledge I haven't actually met a Christian like OP's mom, but if I did, I would be attempting to educate her on some truths. First, innocence and virginity are 2 different things. A person could have sex and still be very innocent about so many things. Second, virginity is only about the first time you have sex. Everyone is a virginity until the first time. While a hymen is often broken during intercourse, it can be broken for many other reasons, so again, not a part of virginity. A tampon is one of many useful tools to deal with a natural process and it is good for all to know the different methods and choose what works for them personally in any given circumstance. Tampons have nothing to do with sex, therefore nothing to do with virginity.

The hypocrisy of these religious zealots is galling. The parents are divorced - what religion looks favorably on that? The daughters should have asked the mother to show them the passage in the bible that forbids the use if tampons.

"Christian" mothers or parents need to be educated about sex and how the body works, male and female. These misconceptions do a great deal of harm to young girls and they often resent their mothers or parents for not telling them the truth. Many pregnancies result from misinformation like this! Snd with abortion laws as they are, if the daughter gets pregnant, watch out, better a tampon than an unwanted pregnancy.

I started my periods when I was about 13, in 1982. My mother would never have bought me tampons and the subject was a taboo. A friend of mine is in her 70s and is bringing up her granddaughter. When the girl started her periods, my friend was appalled when a school nurse gave her granddaughter tampons. My friend tried to get a sanitary towel belt, but they stopped being manufactured decades ago!

Poor girl. There is absolutely nothing wrong with tampons. They don't take away 'innocence' or 'virginity' and anyone bringing up children should be duty to keep up date with their information, not get stuck in the dark ages. Poor sex education and treating subjects like they're taboo is harmful. It's just a human body doing what it needs to. Let the child know all the options and give her the choice without making any sound bad. I found tampons freeing and much more comfortable.

Yes, share! The mother's reaction shows how very little she understands the female body. A tampon doesn't 'take your virginity' or alter your innocence the hymen is not some kind of seal and varies massively from person to person and virginity is a social construct used to control women.

I'm still confused about how you can't full on swim unless it's a sport tanpon? I'm a competitive swimmer and had to figure tampons out in 4 hours between my first period and getting in the pool, and have never had a problem swimming in one, even the cardboard kind from bathroom dispensers. Also as a religious person I can say I have no idea where she got the ridiculous notion that they take away virginity

I grew up before there were ever sports tampons -- this post is the first time I've heard of them! And I used tampons all the time to go swimming, to the beach, etc. I still remember telling my friends, on the bus on the way back from the beach, that I was glad I used them, and a couple didn't yet use them; I was shocked. We were about 15 years old, i.e. circa 1965. BTW, my mother introduced them to me and taught me how to use them. She hated ignorant people, but I don't remember anyone in our crowd or hers having such weird ideas. Of course, none of us were Christian, and it was a liberal neighborhood in NYC.

I was also brainwashed with Catholicism growing up. Priest actually told us our bodies are a temple for Jesus. I always found that to be gross. Masturbation is a sin, premarital sexual relations are a sin so we are expected to deny our own urges and attractions. It's just not natural. I was fortunate my mother never denied me using tampons but she didn't like them so she never used them or bought them. I got my first tampon from my public school. To any of you currently living thru this. Just know it ends when you are old enough to make your own decisions and have your own beliefs. My parents forgave me for not following their teachings and I have a great relationship with my mother still (My father passed away in 2018).

She should book a doctor's appointment and ask her mother to go with her. Ring beforehand to prep Dr and then ask him/her to explain to the mother that tampons categorically do not ruin a girl's hymen. OP should also looking into a menstrual cup for herself and her sister (not one to share, obviously)

Sigh...it's not a bottle top seal. It's not even a seal. It breaks from all kinds of activities, it's not even covering the entire opening, there is heaps of variation of them also. And what is the big deal with what goes in first anyway? Tampons, doctors smear test. Or a MAN. And sex is possible and more enjoyable for girls without penetration at all actually.

Yeah, if we're defining 'loss of virginity' as 'breaking the hymen', then I lost mine about two years after I first had sex, to a thrust treatment cream applicator. Also, cellulite just means you have an amount of subdermal fat (any amount, you could be dangerously thin and still have some) and an estrogen-dominant endocrine system. I think it's a more effective way of storing fat so during times of hardship (including pregnancy), you're less likely to starve.

This one made me laugh. Tampons are about helping the body to cleanse itself in a discrete way. There is nothing sexual about it, other than where it is placed. Virginity is merely not having sexual relations. The mother's objections don't make sense.

I just want to see more Christians that care about people. Is that too much to ask? I'm a Christian and hate the association it now brings me to these horrible people. Christianity at its core is about love, acceptance, redemption and hope. But guess what, you never see Christians sharing this message in everyone's faces. It's all this rule and that rule and you have to do this and you can't do that. Jesus literally came to earth to stop the religious nut jobs of his time from spreading this c**p and now they are all doing it again. Christian culture needs a complete reform and redirection back to its roots. I'm getting so exhausted.

I remember an old TV program where a genuine Doctor said that "Only married women could use tampons." His medical logic was that only married women wouldn't be virgin, and that unmarried women would lose their virginity by using tampons. But surely we are far more enlightened nowadays? Women and girls should be taught all there is to know about the range of products and allowed to have a free choice.

Try teaching her about the menstrual cups. Those are better and easier to use. Plus no tss and reusable. And she can swim in it. Just not cough. Lol. Just pop it in. Take out. Rinse and reuse. Only if she has fake long nails would it be an issue mostly because of tearing it and Mostly for retrieval and injuring her "parts".

Menstrual cups are great, it is just a little bit freaky to get used to it. I couldn’t get used to tampons, but menstrual cup works. Coughing if it is full is bad lol. But I think mine would need scissors to break it, nails wouldn’t stand a chance.

It literally is the mother who brought Christianity into it. She said 'it is not God's will to have children this age use tampons' (which is utter rubbish) and is basically using her religion, which in this instance is Christianity, as the reason why the 14 year old should not be using tampons as they are 'taking her innocence' (again utter rubbish). When people use religion to make up ridiculous reasons to do or not do something it IS a bad thing. Virginity is a social construct used to control women as, all too often, religion is as well.

Okay, this gets me so irritated. **WATER STOPS YOUR PERIOD**. I have worn nothing but pads my whole life and I grew up by the shore and later, with a pool. You don't need to wear a pad or a tampon. Wipe with water, put on suit. Later, when you get out, sure, you have to change right away, but who wants to sit around in a wet suit? I understand if you do the tampon is a better choice, but you can halt the flow of your period with water. I had severely massive bleeding, too, and it still worked.

(eyeroll)

Kathryn Smith

....I cannot imagine ANYTHING being stuck up there during my period being the least bit arousing, INCLUDING a p*nis.
