Many of us would like to think of our bedrooms as a safe, private space. And they should be. For one woman, this was not the case. She discovered a phone hidden between her stuffed animals in her closet one morning. She’d just come out of the shower, and it turned out the phone had been recording for several minutes.

At first, the woman was shocked and confused. But when she realized it was her stepfather’s phone, her whole world got turned upside down. The 20-year-old has since gone online to seek advice. She’s wondering whether she should let her stepdad off the hook for his alcoholic “mishap”. Or whether she is justified in feeling violated beyond forgiveness. She needs to know if family should come first in a case like this.

When it comes to recording other people, it’s best to practice common sense and of course, decency

Laws regarding consent and privacy differ from country to country, and even within different states. In the U.S. it’s generally okay to record people in a public space. But if you are recording someone in an area where there’s an expectation of privacy, like a bedroom, bathroom, or changing room, and you don’t have their consent, you need to check yourself. And if you have to ask yourself if it’s okay, it very likely isn’t.

As the VideoProc site notes, “if the recording is being made for legitimate purposes, such as gathering evidence of a crime or documenting a newsworthy event, it may be considered lawful. However, if the recording is being made for malicious or voyeuristic reasons, it is more likely to be considered illegal.”

The site further notes that the concept of “reasonable expectation of privacy” deals with the idea that people have “a right to be free from unwanted intrusion or surveillance in places or situations where they would reasonably expect to be private.” Basically, if someone has a “reasonable expectation of privacy”, there’s a high chance you could be breaking the law by recording them without their consent.

Even if the law allows for recording in a particular space or setting, the key is to respect people’s privacy. Maybe ask yourself “how would I feel if the camera was in the other hand in this situation?”

Illegal recordings can carry a criminal charges, hefty fines, and even land you behind bars

Earlier this year, police arrested a 34-year-old man after he was found recording women in the changing rooms of H&M in Sawgrass Mills mall in Sunrise. He was charged with two counts of digital voyeurism. It later emerged that he had done something similar at Target in Fort Lauderdale. Kenneth Constantine’s arrest came as a shock to those who knew him. He’s a well-known personal trainer and fitness influencer, and also took part in American Ninja Warrior.

In October, a 24-year-old man from Atlanta was arrested for illegally recording women and girls in a church bathroom. Investigators say Ramon Ochoa Garcia “put a small pen camera into a vent to record people in the women’s bathroom at World Mission Society Church in Bloomingdale.” He was charged with unauthorized video recording of a person under 18 and unauthorized video recording without consent. Police believe he’d been doing this since August.

“Alcohol does not make people predators”: Netizens advised the woman to go to the police, saying her stepdad’s actions were both “creepy” and “criminal”

Sexual predators DO. NOT. CHANGE. Period. And being blackout drunk does not make you do things you wouldn't do sober; if anything, it reveals more of your true character. If this had been my daughter, he would not have lived long enough for the police to arrest him. But since I see from the original comments that this article is at least six months old, hopefully this scumbag is already behind bars and divorce proceedings are well under way.

The only updated info I've found says that the stepfather was heavily into p.o.r.n, OPs mum made him show his internet history and other recordings he'd saved. OP is in therapy, her maternal grandmother is moving in to help the mum who has PPD, baby is just a few months old. Reporting him was still an option OP is going to discuss with a counselor.

He didn’t black out, people don’t do calculated s**t like this when they’re blackout drunk, they wouldn’t have the capacity. I’ve been blackout drunk before and there’s no way I’d be lucid enough to plan, set up my phone and hide it in the closet - I’d be falling over backwards, because drunk. OP’s mom sounds really cool asking the stepdad to leave and getting OP therapy/counselling. This is so messed up, I hope she’s able to get past this but this is majorly traumatic. He absolutely needs to be reported to the police.

the mind games are real with this he is acting surprised like he doesn't remember and say you need to call the police is pure manipulation so you start to think maybe he did it while blacked. Even if that was the case and he didn't remember doing it which I highly doubt he still did it and would do it again. Also the fact that he acted like a father towards you and did this I would be worried about his own children as well he needs to be arrested.

There is no way this was the first time he did this, nor was it done during a blackout. This disgusting POS didn't stagger into her room, he waited for her to take a shower. He knew where to place the phone - OP didn't say anything about him looking around to find the best spot to get the best view, he put the phone down and moved things blocking the view, while using other things to hide the phone. OP needs to go to the police. Chances are, he's been doing it for years and it's possible her friends were also victimized. OP should take step dad's advice and go to the police

I'm very, very disappointed with the mother's attitude. Instead of supporting her daughter, she tries to 'solve' things without holding her husband accountable. No doubt she does this because if her daughter reports her stepadad, things will get set into motion that will up-end her world. However, what her husband does to his stepdaughter now, he will do later on to the other children. Sexual predators will always be just that: sexual predators. Which means mom is shielding her predator-husband. Mom having her daughter in therapy doesn't solve the basic issue: it's just a way to keep things 'among us' and not involve law enforcement. OP should notify the police: for herself of course, but also for the other children. Why wait until they too are violated?

Instead of wondering if pretty pictures are real, this is when the AI discord steps in. What does this dude do with the recording? Is het watching it? Does he post it online? Is he using her face to make AI adult content? This is why it's so important to distinguish if things are AI or not. Because in some cases it's not okay if things look real but they are not. He's been her step dad since she was 8, but he only started hugging her in the past couple years?? Who doesn't hug their stepchild but DOES hug them when they become a young adult? That's sus as hell. Maybe he's (fortunately) not a pedophile, but he's definitely never thought of her as his child. Seems more like he's been biding his time til he could exploit her, and was probably gearing up to escalate to physical abuse. UGH.

The man has postpartum derpression? wondering about this story. Sexual predation is horrifying, but a few things don’t add up. He’s only taken to hugging her in recent years? He’s been in her life for 12 years - she was only 8 years old. And she saw him on the video… all seems a bit like rage bait. If it’s not, I certainly hope they report him.

A predator is a predator ... Check his computer and any other devices for other files / recordings. Use the .av or .vid or any other type of file that points to videos. Also search for your name, initials, dob that may point to you. And or some sort of title such as " the closet", "wardrobes", " animals" ... Etc. This is serious as he has been in your life since 8 yrs old. But be prepared, you may be in for a horror show as to what could be discovered. Call the cops.

The man needs to be out of the house. If it was a blackout due to his alcoholism, he needs to be out of the house. If he knew what he was doing and an alcoholic, he needs to be in jail and out of the house. Either way, he's got to go. There are young children there.

Giving back his phone immediately after discovering it was a mistake, i would have done a deep dive into it to look for previous recordings, internet history, if there are locked folders/photo albums and taken to someone to unlock it if necessary before returning it to him. 1,000,000% go to police about it

Go to the cops. He's prob done this before. You changing in the closet is one thing. I'd change in the bathroom and check that for cameras too. He's a perv. And will do it again even if you forgive him. He can always buy a burner phone and do that and never look guilty if his phone is where it's not near you at changing times. It's not fair either to put the little kids at risk down the road too because you don't speak up now. Or a friend that might come over. Or even your mom.

I hope she filed charges, instead of feeling bad for him for "having a blackout". He's a predator, and needs to be caged for it.

Why does it matter if he was drunk or not? It doesn't. Time for the police.

Giving back his phone immediately after discovering it was a mistake, i would have done a deep dive into it to look for previous recordings, internet history, if there are locked folders/photo albums and taken to someone to unlock it if necessary before returning it to him. 1,000,000% go to police about it

Stepdad's a perv. In one of her comments, she said "she started dressing in her closet, probably because her clothes are there". Interesting that step-dad knew that, huh? It's almost like he's been watching for a while.....

"Ho no! I blacked out and did something wrong! but you know what, instead of immediately sign up for AAA I'll just make YOU go to therapy, and take a bet on how much you won't dare go to the police"

Instant divorce, police report and change locks. I'm a blackout drunk and not once in 30 years have I ever considered filming anyway, and especially not a child.
