Mom Ruins Friendship With BFF After Expecting Her To Pay Hundreds For Catering At Son’s B-Day

Interview With Author
ADVERTISEMENT

When throwing a party, it’s important to realistically assess one’s budget. Unless it’s a wedding or a grand jubilee, asking or politely implying for money to cover the celebration’s expenses can be considered rude. For birthdays, especially kids’ ones, the norm is to bring gifts instead of extending an envelope with a few bills inside.

Unfortunately, this mom didn’t get the memo and still persisted that her best friend helps out with her son’s party costs. When faced with rejection, she took matters into her own hands, putting their friendship in danger.

Scroll down to find the full story and a conversation with its author and children’s event planner Michelle McKenna Shuey from The Effortless Affair, who kindly agreed to give a few tips on managing a child’s birthday party budget.

“I might be able to forgive her but I am not risking another friendship with her”

The author of the story tells Bored Panda that she shared it online to simply vent out the frustrations that the situation caused. “I never imagined it would blow up like it did.” She mentions that the best friend story is far from ending, as the original poster is planning to take legal action. However, that’s the only update she was willing to give.

Delving deeper into the situation itself, we were curious to find out whether helping her friend financially was a common occurrence. “I supported her financially before, especially with her baby essentials,” she told us. She felt inclined to help her childhood buddy, as being a single mom has been quite tough for her.

“It was awful and heartbreaking,” the author said, reflecting on what had happened with her best friend. “I might be able to forgive her but I am not risking another friendship with her,” she stated.

Commenting on parents asking family or friends to contribute to the costs of a child’s birthday party, children’s event planner Michelle McKenna Shuey from The Effortless Affair says, “It’s generally not the best idea to ask friends or family to chip in financially for your child’s birthday party. The party is all about celebrating your little one, and the costs should really be the responsibility of the hosts. Your guests are there to share in the fun and celebrate, not to help cover the bill.”

But if anyone offers to pitch in or help out, it’s completely fine to graciously accept, says Shuey. “Maybe they want to bring a dish or help with decorations—that can be a really sweet way to collaborate without anyone feeling obligated. At the end of the day, it’s all about making the day special for your child, and that doesn’t have to mean going overboard on costs or putting pressure on anyone else. Just focus on creating joyful memories!”

“The best party is the one that reflects your child and your budget”

While parents want their kids to have the most special day on their birthday and feel enticed to throw an elaborate celebration, she believes that they shouldn’t cave into societal pressure. The kid will still feel special without an over-the-top party if it’s done right!

“Kids just want your love and attention, and as long as you’re there, celebrating them in a way that feels right for your family, that’s what truly matters. Sure, those Kardashian-style parties are stunning and fun to look at, but let’s be real—that’s not realistic for 99% of families!

Image credits: stockfilmstudio/Envato (not the actual photo)

The best party is the one that reflects your child and your budget. Whether it’s a small backyard picnic or a themed party in your living room, what makes it magical is the love and effort you put into it, not how fancy it is. Trust me, your little one will cherish the memories, no matter how simple or grand!”

The key to a budget-friendly celebration is to focus on one big wow factor that would steal the show. “Whether it’s a stunning backdrop for photos, a super cool party entrance, or an amazing cake, just pick one area to really go all out on, and let that be the star of the party!” suggests Shuey.

And lest we forget the DIY magic! “I love a good DIY project because you can make almost anything with a little creativity and foam board. You can grab it from your local hardware store, cut it into any shape you like, and paint it to fit your theme—whether it’s a giant ice cream cone, a train, or a whimsical animal. It’s affordable, fun, and gives the party a personal touch!”

Another great project to do yourself that she suggests is a balloon garland. There are quite a few tutorials on how to make it online and with some time and dedication, it can be really worth it. “At the end of the day, it’s all about creating a fun atmosphere for the kids,” concludes the children’s party planner.

Wow, apparently the 💩 got deep. There's been some updates and baby mama seems to have gone berserk. Threatening the OP and even breaking out a window in OP's home. She's had to change her locks and file charges over the whole affair. Apparently she's retained legal help and has been told no updates for a while. But the friends who were supporting baby mama found out that the story she gave them was not true, so they have come to the OP with their tails between their legs. What a ride.

I've got a few mates who I'm very close with, more like family than friends and we freely share all kinds of stuff (It's a British Army thing) without a second thought. If one of those blokes ended up spending £500 off a card of mine without saying anything I'd just assume he had something going on and a good reason for doing it, and figure it out later on - it's entirely mutual though, I could do the same thing if I had a crisis that justified doing the same. And that's a pretty good 'acid test' that the offender here should have done before swiping her former friend's money: If you're happy for me to make coffee at your house without asking, you probably don't need to ask when you're in my home. If you're wondering whether it's ok to ask for or take something from your friend, think honestly about how you'd feel if it was the other way round and you'll find the answer. That train of thought would make this offender's actions completely unacceptable - but we kinda knew that already..

Yeah, there's probably a difference between your mates and OP's so-called friend. If your friendship is tit-for-tat, I think your mate would probably say "hey, I need £500 to cover some emergency expenses. I can get the money back to you asap" and not "Oh, I've charged £500 worth of catering to your card - yes I know my child is only one - you've got this, right? It's your duty as my friend". I also doubt that your army buddies would go mental, break your window, and threaten you over the situation.

Update 2: The charge went through & a new card was requested. Ex still thinks she was right. Ex was a childhood best friend who she shared everything with, so locks are being changed. OP's family is watching over her & OP is considering moving to another city. Some of the friends apologized - ex told them that OP had said it was okay & it was only $100. Anna saw the post & got big mad. No more updates.

She stole her friend’s credit card, that’s a crime, but ok, if she can get her money back, Then I guess don’t press charges. I would still in the friendship though. And on top of that, she didn’t ruin her son’s day. He’s one year old he’s not gonna remember it that’s why first birthdays should be small affairs. This woman went over the top when she couldn’t afford it, and then expected other people to foot the bill.

It is both against state and federal law to use someone else credit card without their permission and from the amount that was spent, it would be a felony in both state and federal court. The only question i have is was it worth it to put yourself at risk of going to jail considering she has a 1 year old.

CC fraud aside, if this "friend" was struggling that much this bday wouldn't have been set up like a wedding. I've had 2 kids and they don't even remember their 14th days little alone their 1st. What a stupid person. If they keep coming at you don't just dispute charges but file theft and fraud charges. She wants to play like that then play her game.

Just my two cents here ... I would give your ex-BFF one, and only one, opportunity to to pay you the $500 she stole from you with a set time frame for the payment. If she doesn't meet your deadline then I would call the authorities and report her for credit card theft/fraud. She needs a wakeup call about friendship and stealing from friends/people. You have nothing to lose, since it sounds like your friendship is over. Good luck with however it goes.

I can beyond assume OP's "best friend" is clearly a single mother & father of the child is no where to be found. With that said, my only guess on why she did this is expecting OP to step in as a parental figure in place of the absent father. Her 'struggling' problems are indeed NOT OP's at all. So glad she blocked her & went full no contact to do better for herself. Adding latest update: https://www.reddit.com/r/AITAH/comments/1ftfbvu/update_aita_for_blocking_my_childhood_best_friend/

Obviously the OP did the right thing, why did she ask if she was AITA? If the OP can't prove that she has used her card without permission the OP can go to the police but it will be in vain. One person's word against another's, the police will drop the case.

If you are single and struggling why are you wasting money 💰 for a one year old BD party? This person is out of touch with reality putting on a facade.. How dare you take another person’s credit card 💳 and charge $500. She crossed the line

This is something I tell my students: If you want something, you need to ask first. If you ask, there's a good chance the answer will be yes. but if you don't, the answer will always be no.

Your friend thinks ATM stands for Anne Take Money. I can't believe what's happened since wow!! Good luck and I hope she arrested for some of the behaviour she's displayed. Sounds as though she's having some sort of mental breakdown! No excuse though.

I have to seriously doubt the unknown use of card, how had info, etc. I can't even use my own card without info and bills don't show info

I read some of the comments on the OG thread. OP reckons the ex-friend went through their bag when they were over a few days earlier

Can these moms stop pretending that a lavish birthday party for a one year-old has anything to do with the child? It's all about getting mommy some attention.

"Struggling", eh? Went ahead and had a kid while struggling. Doesn't sound like my monkey, doesn't sound like my circus.

Some friends do have it like that. And you know if you are in that kind of relationship. You wouldn't have to steal the card; you would have access to it.

That's fraud. Also, if any aspect of "struggling" includes financial struggles, maybe DON'T HAVE A HUGE PARTY THAT REQUIRES $500 OF CATERING.

What I've learned reading posts like this: People who belittle others for not helping/giving money are usually the type of money who will never help/give their own money, just dictate what others should do with theirs.

Theft and fraud. Trust is a big part of the basic definition of friendship. If you can't trust them, they are not your friend. A big party for a one year old is just plain stupid anyway imo.

Obviously the OP did the right thing, why did she ask if she was AITA? If the OP can't prove that she has used her card without permission the OP can go to the police but it will be in vain. One person's word against another's, the police will drop the case.

The ex- freind told her she used it the day of the party & op got upset & told her she didn't have permission to use her card...ex-froend told on herself when she lied to other ppl & went beserk,, breaking out op home & car windows..clear case of guilt & having charges pressed against her...get a f clue...even ex-friends parents were shocked when the truth came out...get a clue & start reading to understand

My best friend was my soul sister and I was hers and she would never put anything on my cc nor would I ever put anything on hers. Ever. We’ve each struggled financially and found ways to help each other out but committing fraud was never an option.

I can see that you guys run out of content ideas awhile ago. That is heartbreaking to see how such a creative website falls down the cliff by quoting dramas from Reddit. If i want to read Reddit, i go to Reddit. This is really, really sad.

I don’t like the poll question. Forgiveness is vital to your health and wellbeing. It’s a must. Trust is earned. They are different.
