Zoo Confirms That The Jaguar Who Attacked A Woman Trying To Take A Selfie With Her Won’t Be Put Down
Way too often, people forget that acting carelessly around wild animals can result in a tragedy. A couple of years ago a gorilla named Harambe was killed after a 4-year-old boy managed to get into his enclosure. The killing of the gorilla resulted in a widespread backlash, with many people blaming both zookeepers and parents for allowing the child to get into gorilla’s cage. Sadly, some people learned nothing from this situation and continues to get themselves into dangerous situations by not obeying the rules at the zoo.
Recently a young woman visiting the zoo in Arizona made a mistake that could’ve been fatal, either to her or an animal involved

The woman wanted to take a selfie with a jaguar and to do so, she decided to cross the barrier and got dangerously close to the wild animal.
That’s when the jaguar reached out and grabbed the careless woman’s arm with its claws. The victim suffered deep scratches and was taken into the hospital to treat her injuries.
After this story went viral people began to wonder what will happen to the jaguar who attacked the visitor. The Wildlife Word Zoo released a statement reminding people that those barriers are put there for a reason and reassured that the jaguar won’t be put down.

The man who helped the woman attacked by the jaguar took a video of her injuries
Some people reacted by cracking jokes about the whole ordeal
Ohers sided with the animal, by saying that the jaguar did nothing wrong

As it is the US am surprised she is not automatically trying to sue the zoo regardless

Jaguire? Is that how you say it? Like nucular? Dafuq is wrong with your english skillz, America?
There is a big cat sanctuary in Colorado that takes in abused/abandoned exotic pet trade cats and circus refugees. Many many years ago...a worker that had been there for years with no incident, had become very close and friendly with one of the tigers...completely forgot her experience and training, and tried to skritch its noggin. Well, he ripped her arm out of the socket, and managed to eat it while they were rescuing her. The state rolled hard to have the tiger put down, but the lady whose arm got eaten lawyered up and fought to save the cat, because she knew that it was her fault and the only way the cat was going to live was if she personally, rather than the sanctuary, was the "save this tiger" standard bearer.
These people have it right! This Jaguar did nothing wrong! This story made my day :)
How that was even considered as an option in the first place is beyond me. It's ridiculous to punish any animal for the stupidity of people. Regardless, I have to thank the zoo staff for their common sense 👏
Because SOME zoos and animal reservation areas think that once an animal attacks a human, they should be "destroyed". Believe me, it pisses me off too since all cases start with "the human did something stupid... again." How can you forget Harambe? And he didnt even harm the child.
Load More Replies...In 2017 here in Finland also some parents let their child to get too close to a wolf cage at the zoo and the child was injured. The girls an idiot. Get her neutered just incase she decides to pass her idiot gene on by reproducing. Glad the jaguar is safe and won't be harmed like the poor harambe was because of neglect and stupidity of that kids parents too
You want to stop people from doing this? When you catch someone going over a barrier, you give them and their immediate family a lifetime ban from the park. If they return, have them arrested for trespassing. After a few people are banned for breaking the rules, the rest of the general public will catch on. Oh..and make sure you post pics of the people that are banned for crossing barriers at the gates so that other guests will get the message upon entering. Sounds harsh to punish the immediate family, but they are just as responsible because A) they brought the offender and B) they apparently were ineffective at telling them "no." Also..anyone with year long passes should be required to accept a terms and agreements contract that says if you violate the rules and are banned, you forfeit your pass and will receive no refund.
Thank you for protecting that jaguar- this fascination with selfies is going to get someone killed-
And in another article, Bored Panda promotes petting lions. Perhaps she read it (or something similar) and got the idea that they are like the animals in Disney films? THEY ARE WILD ANIMALS!!!!
In her thirties, I would hope she does know the difference between reality and cartoons.
Load More Replies...the jaguar didn't want to do more than warn her.. If the intent was to kill her the jaguar would have.
Good! If someone so unbelievably entitled and with such a vile superiority complex, climbs over a safety barrier to photograph a jaguar, they deserve every thing that subsequently happens to them. Serves her right.
One she is just stupid and two like the zoo said there stands a barrier for a reason I'm happy that the Jaguar didn't get put down
What did she think was going to happen? seriously some people are beyond stupid.
Oh thank god, an animal won't be a catalyst because a human was acting like a douche.
luckily nothing will happen to the jaguar... how can people be so stupid???
OOF I've seen an lion and if I came in there like her I would be dead 💀💀
I think the Jaguar was pretty nice about it, just scratches. This lady lucked out for being so dumb
They would have no right to put that panther down even if it had killed her. She broke the rules. The panther was doing his job, being a panther.
Human stupidity at its finest. That woman should be sued for trespassing and not following zoo policies
I saw the photo of the woman's arm without the pixellation, and WHOO! Ms. Jag got a good one in on her arm, y'all. ::shudders:: Honestly, it's what the woman gets for thinking she was so entitled.
I feel bad for the girl. She actually thought it was okay to do this. I'm worried for our future as a whole if this becomes the norm.
Reading the title i could only think was putting the Jaguar down seriously on the table as an option. Why not put the Animal that instigated the contact down.
You know what, I love my cat. My cat is cute and I like to take pictures of her. But I still understand that if I get in her space and she doesn't want me there, she's gonna f*****g bite me.
Its called "Natural Selection" for a reason, if your to stupid to realized that the barrier is there for YOUR PROTECTION, Then your to stupid to be alive -_-
Why was putting the Jaguar down even a "thought"... stupid is stupid does Lady.
The Jaguar did what Jaguars do. The woman should be put down for stupidity.
They need to start enforcing fines for crossing the safety barrier...and if it results in an animal being euthanized they should be fined for how much the animal is worth
I think the news report was irresponsible for reporting it as the jaguar attacking the woman.... WHEN IT WAS CLEARLY THE OTHER WAY AROUND... SHE ATTACKED THE JAGUAR BY (ACCORDING TO EYE WITNESSES, EVEN!) SHE INVADED THE JAGUAR'S VISIBLY "POSTED"... PERSONAL PRIVATE PROTECTED BARRICADED SPACE!!! LET'S GET IT RIGHT FOLKS!!! 😠😡🤬🤬🤬🤬
That animal did NOTHING wrong!! People get all upset when an animal acts like an animal!! They should not have to suffer for someone’s ignorance! Stay TF away whether it’s in a zoo or out in the wild. 🤦🏼♀️
The woman acted in a stupid manner. No the jaquar should not be put down. I have seen a similar situation whrn I visited Yellowstone National Park with different parkgoers trying to get a selfie with a wild buffalo.
It's nice to see that despite being in a zoo, the jaguar still has it's natural instincts and hasn't been entirely domesticated. The amount of common sense some people lack nowadays is ridiculous.
Why are people so entitled now a days? What made her think she was better than any other person to cross a border into a wild animals habitat? Well thank God the jaguar will be ok, and the woman needs to be punished for trespassing...or something all for a selfie.
Thank god they didn't hurt that Jaguar. I don't understand what goes through someone's mind...a zoo doesn't make any animal less 'wild'
Newscaster states it was "human error" not it's human stupidity. She's an idiot and got what she deserved.
If people would follow the damn rules. There are animals that would still be alive, and people that wouldnt be suffering losses or injuries. The zoo is not for animal interaction as it's not a "petting zoo" pretty much every animal in there is dangerous in one way or another. Even the docile ones you can feed with the zoo's permission can be dangerous in the right situation. So dont think just because they're exposed to humans they turn into docile creatures who wont hurt you. Because they can and they will. FOLLOW THE RULES! Keep your children with you at all times and stay out of the enclosures. Those rules are set exactly for that reason so no harm comes to animals OR people.
She’s probably getting more media cover from the attack than from a selfie! Got what she deserved!
"JAGUIRE". Did she have to sell her house to pay for the medical bill?
shes cray cray and it her fault she got scratched by good kitty/jaguar
why would that person do the dumbest thing ever? she knows she shouldn't do that there are fences for a reason #jaguar innocent.
Once there was this dude imitating tigers, and the tiger he was imitating ate him. How Ironic
as Bill Engvall would say, Here's your sign(dumbass)! yeah, i know he didn't add that, but it fits
I hope that dumb animal see her scars and remembers her stupidity for the rest of her, I bet, short life. Honey. Next time try a waterfall.
I absolutely disagree!! That woman should be put down to stop the spread of stupidity on this planet.
After a week it has settled somewhat, however , what about the next incident that is almost certain to happen, many will agree, too bad we couldn't scan STUPID people as they arrive at the zoo, to protect the animals !!!
SoOoOo what you’re saying is all she wanted was a selfie but she got an autograph instead by: dearest regards Mr. Jaguar 😂😂
557 points for a very boring article that makes fun of a woman who made a really dumb mistake. I can't wait until I make a really dumb mistake and people start posting it all over the internet. But it makes us feel superior? Is that it? Or are we just mean-spirited?
I think that if you can't say "jaguar" that you switch to the British pronunciation. It is definitely NOT pronounced Jag-wire.
I cannot believe people are so stoopid. Pet cats hurt like a mo fo when they scratch even in play
I find it totally incredible that were even having this conversation. What went through her mind leading her to believe the barrier was in place for all of the other people, but not her? It wouldn't surprise me if a week from now there's an article on page six of the local newspaper reporting that she filed a lawsuit against the zoo for failing to properly protect her from such a dangerous animal.
Bloody stupid woman, thank god she's ok or the jaguar might have been put down !!
I'm rather disturbed by the overall usage of the word "attacked". The Jaguar did not "attack" this idiot of a human, she defended herself. I really think that's an important distinction.
Finally, the animal isn’t killed for behaving like an animal. She’s very lucky the jugular was apparently in a playful mood~~they distracted it with a water bottle, which it took to play with, instead of the idiot’s (oops, sorry) woman’s arm.
I totally agree that it was this woman's fault. I mean serously people its not the jaguar's fault. Im glad the Jaguar is ok.
WTF Leanne? Wild cat kept in captivity. A daily dumb a*s for certain. Stay on your side of the enclosure. It’s bad enough the poor animal is endangered but you further endanger it by putting it in this situation. Then demanding it be more secure. Perhaps you need a straight jacket yourself . Shame on you
I'm just glad the Jaguar is ok, couldn't care less about stupid people like this.
To bad the woman can't be put down for endangering the cat, who's to say she didn't have a disease that might be harmful to a spirit that is held captive every day of it's life, to be put on social media that in all honesty NO ONE CARES ABOUT YOUR SELFIES
If people don't obey the rules and climb over barriers putting themselves in danger , if they are attacked by a beautiful creature then the person should be put down not the animals
"She sustained no life-threatening injuries"...only "life-threatening stupidity."
Well if people put wild animals in bars and expect them to be happy with humans surrounding them and taking pictures, far from their natural habitat then people wl get hurt. hopefully they will attack more people and people will stop paying for animals to be locked in cages and tormented for years on end. I mean. Put a human in a cage full of snakes and spiders and see how they react eh.
The worst part of the story for me is with the news report video. Why oh why do people pronounce it as jag-wire? It's painful to listen to. Have they never seen a commercial for the car of the same name?
It's a shame that people think that killing the jaguar was even an option. I really hope there will be put an end to the moronic slaughtering of animals. How on EARTH would another stupid death be a solution for anyone? I don't even believe the woman herself (the human, not the jaguar) would want that.
It stupid people like her that should put down, not these beautiful creatures.
I swear some people need a license to exist! That Jag clearly didn't want to actually hurt her. If it had, she'd be dead, not just a few stitches!
The fact that they considered putting it down is ridiculous to me. If your DOMESTICATED PET CAT scratches you (emphasis on domesticated) you’re not going to put it down. But when a WILD ANIMAL scratches you (emphasis on wild) the first move is, “Alright, put it down!” Wtf???
The jaguar did nothing wrong, the lady overstepped her boundaries and the jaguar corrected her
I suspect she'll make another foolish choice someday, and Darwin will get her.
Shame it didn't do any real damage..... one less stupid human in the world is what we need.
Why are people like that so stupid? A selfie with a wild animal? She deserves what she got. The jaguar was in it’s own enclosure, protecting itself. Don’t be so dumb next time.
The selfie thing is particularly dangerous, because big cats are prompted to attack when you turn your back on them, in the wild and in captivity. An adult stupid enough to cross security barriers that protect them from danger is an adult that fully deserves the pain and suffering of being attacked.
Common sense is a thing of the past! I see idiots every day pulling idiot thing for a picture. I was search and rescue for 45 years. If it can be thought of they have tried and usually failed. We have a sand cape extending out into Ocean. Usually at least one death! The bad part is fenced. Acrossed they go. One death is too many. Few weeks ago the waves and wind right the fly sometines 100 ft, in air. Then come crashing down. While this was happening people are crossing fence going out there. Two held on some how and was able to excape. But most don't. Then we would have to go into danger looking for them!
Interview with "that woman", aftermath vid :-) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HDRKcOuKeF4
Wait, you mean to tell me that the jaguar risked being put down because of the idiot who went inside? How is that even the jaguar’s fault? I suggest you put stupid people down.
You obviously don't follow the news. The animal usually is destroyed. Wolves, tigers, lions and even an elephants. Google animal attacks & see how it usually. The wolf one still makes me angry. CLOSED & locked off enclosures but parents ignored it. Then they weren't watching the brat who stuck his hand in the cage. Wolf bit it because it was a wolf. Because the lazy assed parents didn't want their brat getting rabies, the wolf was destroyed to check for rabies. It didn't have rabies. What a surprise. Did anyone check the brat for diseases? They should have.
Load More Replies...Apparently, at least in the US, we need to enclose more toughly, and show videos of the animals beyond the barrier. IDiot people. Thank God the Jaguar was not blamed for this.
There should be fines for people who blatantly disrespect safety guidelines like this
That woman should be put down or prosecuted for being such a complete A-hole!
Don't send prayers to her family. Send a note for them to control their CHILD.
Why are people so extremly dumb... "Hey a wild animal with a bunch of barriers to keep people away from it, how about I CliMb OVeR tHeM All FoR A SelFiE?!?!?!""
In a situation like this the animal should never be blamed. Humans capture beautiful animals like this and put them in cages purely for our own selfish entertainment and then stupid people trespass and cause the animal to feel threatened and defend itself in its home. We are to blame, not the poor animal.
This is about as stupid as the kid that fell into the gorilla pit i think it was? You shouldn't blame animals for the stupidity of humans. This was 1000% avoidable and self inflicted. I think we have one of our top contenders for the Darwin awards for 2019 already.
A big cat is still a cat...do not pet the cat if you don't want to risk the claws.
If this idiot has any inclanation to sue for her ‘selfishy’ maybe the patents of traumatized children should sue her for their kids therapy sessions...
Don't dare kill the cat for her stupidity..instead bring it back where it belongs..in the wild so it can scratch and tear as it should for food.
This zoo is awesome, despite this goober. You can actually get pretty decently close to the cats etc. Great place for pics.
"crossed over the barier"... And probably couple of warning signs... but who would care about those "decorations"! Right?
Is that woman stupid or what. Poor jaguar was being a innocent animal. Glad animal will not be put down. Can’t control stupidity.
Who's THE most dangerous animal at the ZOO? Sadly, the Human Animal. We should take a good, long look in the mirror and ask ourselves why?....
Jaguars have the strongest jaws in the cat family. They evolved to catch caimans (a type of alligator) and drag them up out of the water onto land, then bite through the armour-like scales on their backs. This woman is DAMN lucky she only got scratched! If she'd been bitten, she probably would be missing a hand.
Nah... tigers and jaguars do have very much the same jaw strength.
Load More Replies...Thank goodness the Jaguar wasn't destroyed due to some woman's stupidity. These animals should not be destroyed because people choose to ignore the signs and barriers.
Stupidity at its finest. How stupid are you to cross barriers just to take a damn selfie? Even kids are smart enough to not cross barriers (except in cases where often times parents don't supervise their kids or put their kids in danger by wanting a "closer view"). Then again, I am not surprised anymore. But thankfully, the animal didn't get put down for one's blatant ignorance. And I like how the zoo responded in one article about this incident that it's "not an animal's fault that people cross barriers". Indeed it isn't an animal's fault that stupid people do stupid things. Animals will be animals no matter how much they seem "tamed". You can never tame a wild animal and the best way to avoid s**t like this from happening is to know your place around animals and respect them by simply following rules. Then again, people don't even read rules anymore or give a rat's a*s about them. So yeah.... there will be animals that get the blame for human ignorance and it's quite unfair.
She got what she deserved. If somebody breaks into your home you have the right to defend yourself. She broke into the jaguar's home and she was just defending herself and protecting her home.
This actually doesn’t sound like a Jaguar that was scared or territorial. It sounds and looks like the animal saw another animal in its enclosure and wanted to play or interact with it but humans don’t have thick fur coats or thick skin that can protect against sharp teeth or claws. Humans are soft and can barely handle wounds or attacks from the Jaguars domesticated counter parts.
I'm glad the woman is okay, however, the Jaguar is NOT to blame. Want an awesome selfie, use photo shop!
Good for the Jaguar!! The lady was lucky she only got scratched. Idiot!!
This must mean that the next "selfie" this woman takes will be in front of an active volcano. Or, maybe trying to hug a grizzly bear? *satire*
These animals spend their whole life in cages, but then again out in the wild it would of been hunted and put on someones wall, this lady is stupid, beyond words can say, time to time we find stupid people , maybe she should of said here kitty kitty, and it wouldn't of happened..
I’m happy nothing will happen to the animal I hope the woman learned her lesson
There is a reason for these barriers. It was a vain, stupid and foolish thing she did. I do hope she recovers but also hope she realised how stupid she was. These are wild animals who should not be in captivity anyway but that is a whole other issue. Maybe she can become an advocate for obeying the rules in the future.
It was self defense on the jaguar side, she felt threatened. I would too if I had some crazy person in my personal space
Why should an animal suffer consequences for the stupidity of humans? The jaguar was only reacting to its natural instincts
I would say finish her this is one of the main reasons ppl are becoming more r******d and not really using there head. So I say that dumb b***h is lucky to be alive.
Exactly - a foot higher and the claw would have punctured her neck. Idiot.
Load More Replies...Why the hell was it even considered to be put down in the first place. The f*****g dumbass crossed a clearly marked barrier so she could get a f*****g photo. Its hurt fault. Would you scrap a Tesla because some stupid b***h stepped in traffic to take a picture of it in action? No. You know why? Because that person is an idiot...the car didnt malfunction
Cant take the wild out of a animal just because its in the zoo. Wake up America
Glad the cat is safe! Shame the woman didn't quite reach her Darwin Award though, better luck next time.
Soon humans will be at extinction risk.... so Earth could thrive again....
When we have a facility fabricated to emulate a natural environment for wildlife held captive and on display for the public's education and entertainment, with that power also comes the responsibility to protect the wildlife contained within this environment.. established by the zoo administration. The given scenario would be tragic.. and ironic indeed, having a creature put down because it was doing only what God intended it to do naturally.. We must not destroy or punish these animals, their lives are compromised as it is, no fault of their own.
Wise decision. Not the jaguar’s fault. I wish people - visitors and zoo managers - learn from this experience. Thank God both are ok.
That dumb twat should be brought up on charges for failure to obey safety protocol! #Dumbass
She was stupid!!! I’m so glad that the Jaguar isn’t goi g to suffer because of her stupidity
Maybe they should slap the stupid animal in the facebook. I mean the human, of course.
I bet you it went like this: "AWWWWWWWWWWWWWwwwwwwwwwwwww wat a nice kitty, SELFIE!.... - kitty not amused - ....*BAM!*" Good to see they won't end the life of this jaguar due to utter human stupidity. She should be thankful the jaguar didn't rip her entire arm of or even do worse....
A grown woman being stupid, the zoo should sue her for causing trouble, trespassing, to set an example for future idiots !!!
In my opinion, the lonely Jaguar was trying to get a little interaction with another animal. In this case the other creature was the closest thing available, this woman.
Of course , huamn stupid , that you are .. If was me I would EAT THE WHOLE HAN
Because both witch hunting- and inquisition times have long past! We specially reserve that for the next future American Dentist who goes trophy hunting. Although it's indeed a really, really stupid mistake, but I am dead sure she learned her lesson :-)
