A stepmom sought guidance after learning that her teenage stepdaughter identified as a fox and “converted” her own biological daughter into the practice of identifying as an animal. The confession emphasized concerns about boundaries, potentially dangerous online behavior, and the complexities of parenting. A therapist has analyzed the situation for Bored Panda.

Highlights
  • A 13-year-old has been identifying as a fox, sparking concern from her stepmom who sought advice on handling the situation.
  • A therapist spoke to Bored Panda, emphasizing the importance of understanding "Therian culture" and not alienating the child.
  • The child's behavior included wearing fox attire and having a YouTube channel, which raised online safety concerns.

Jill, who left other information about her identity and the names of her family members shielded from her testimony, was featured in an episode of The Dr. John Delony Show podcast earlier this month.

In the YouTube video of the segment, Jill sought advice about how to handle her 13-year-old stepdaughter self-identifying as a fox, saying: “She wears a mask and a tail and has a YouTube channel of her jumping around like a fox in really short shorts.”

The exasperated stepmom claimed that the girl’s biological mother was encouraging the behavior at her house and recalled being horrified upon learning that the behavior had an official name: therian.

Jill said: “I’m at a complete loss and I’m shocked and it is a whole thing and there’s a name and there’s terminology and there’s things that are offensive to them.”

Therian Wiki defined modern therianthropy as a deep integral or personal belief that an individual is in some way and to some degree a non-human animal, based upon involuntary, non-human experience.

According to Fiona Hannah, a child and adolescent psychodynamic therapist and clinical director at Teenage Mental Health, this behavior isn’t a common occurrence.

“However, I would also not call it rare. Most of us like to indulge in escapism, such as fantasizing about being famous or wealthy. This is just a version of that, albeit a little out of an adult’s general range,” Fiona wrote to Bored Panda in an email.

In response to the stepmother’s shock, Fiona said an appropriate reaction would be to find out as much information as possible about the therian culture so that she can have supportive and helpful conversations with the child.

“Simply banning and shutting it down as wrong would only alienate the child and cause more division between her and the child,” the expert added.

In her desperate plea to mental health podcaster John Delony, Jill further revealed that the stepdaughter had converted her own nine-year-old biological daughter into a therian — with her now identifying as a giraffe.

The stepdaughter had also made and posted a video with Jill’s two “young kids” over Christmas, which the parents learned about at a later stage, prompting the desperate mother to ask John if she should let her own daughter “continue to be a giraffe” amid the potentially inappropriate use of social media, particularly YouTube.

“I can understand how it would be [a concern] for her; however, the nine-year-old is simply responding to something she is seeing an older child doing, and as she looks up to her, leading her to explore whether it is something she wants to be part of, much like fashion, we all want to try things on for size when we see someone else with it. It doesn’t mean it works for us,” Fiona explained.

A therapist told Bored Panda that children pretending allows them to explore their identity, but posting about it online could be a safety concern

“A nine-year-old is simply working out their place in the world. Therefore, they will mimic and copy anyone of influence around them, including older idealized siblings,” the clinician added.

In her exchange with the podcaster, Jill continued to assert her worry, asking: “More importantly, what rules do I have in place in my home about the internet and screens and social media?

“And can I tell my stepdaughter that her cell phone’s not allowed here?

“And overall, big picture, what kind of relationship should I have with my stepdaughter?

“Since I’m not her bio parent, but so much of her influence is over my house, and my daughter, who’s absolutely in love with her, adores her, and I’m sure a big reason my daughter’s doing this is to gain good favors with the stepdaughter.”

While John admitted that he didn’t worry when his own eight-year-old daughter regularly played make-believe while dressed up as a princess, noting the behavior was healthy and normal, he did express some concern, saying: “If your kid wants to dress up like a giraffe and run in the backyard, I don’t have an inherent problem with that, understanding that she’s not going to dress like a giraffe when we go out to dinner.

“She’s not going to dress like a giraffe when friends come over.

“Because you don’t ‘identify as,’ that language is just madness.

“It’s so strange that we’re even having this conversation.”

The stepmom, Jill, shared her testimony on The Dr. John Delony Show podcast

Jill went on to explain that her husband was seemingly ok with his daughter’s behavior but added that the father had said “absolutely not” to her having a YouTube channel months ago, which was launched by the biological mom and the daughter regardless.

“The stepmother’s belief that there will be sexualization of the child’s behavior by those that view it online, I believe, is valid, as it would be a concern that a child is parading themselves on YouTube channels dressed in what many may perceive as a provocative manner,” Fiona told Bored Panda.

She continued: “If YouTube channels are not being monitored appropriately by a parent, a child is at risk of grooming or sexual coercion, regardless of what their channel content is; therefore, I agree with her.

“Any 13-year-old having a YouTube channel could be at risk of an [in]appropriate sexualized adult attention.”

During the podcast segment, John was stunned to learn that the therian daughter had live-streamed herself, with the vast majority of viewers being, in all likelihood, “adult men.”

“When you hand a kid a smartphone, you’re not giving them access to the world — you’re giving the world access to them,” the podcast host said.

Beyond safety concerns, John went on to explain that amid the rapid physical changes of early adolescence, kids wanted to know about their parents: “Do you see me? Do you see all of me? And do you really love me?”

To which Jill replied: “My heart breaks for her, that’s exactly what she says, is she doesn’t feel seen or heard by the adults in her life. You know, she’s in therapy and stuff.”

You can watch the segment below:

According to Fiona, it is not unusual to pretend to be something you are not. She explained: “Think of people who catfish or alter photos to look better. We all present ourselves differently depending on our environment and our need to be liked.

“Children pretending to be something they are not allows them to explore and find their own identity.

“In my opinion, I would only regard this as abnormal if it was impacting the child’s ability to sustain and engage in healthy relationships or behaviors and manage their normal life appropriately.”

As for the internet, screens, and social media rules in the house, the child and adolescent psychodynamic therapist highlighted parents’ common sense, saying: “Your children are nine and 13; therefore, [they] should not be allowed unfettered access to the internet 24/7.

“Sensible monitoring and education around the internet is always best with children so that they are able to self-censor their time on it, and if they are unable to, the parents should establish appropriate and sensible boundaries for internet use.

“Parents should also endeavor to model good behavior around these things, i.e., there is no point banning your children from using the internet, and then they spend all their free time glued to their screens.”

When it comes to boundary concerns within a step-parenting relationship, Fiona explained that in the case of Jill, since it is her home, she is well within her rights to impose house rules as she sees fit.

“However, [she] should not be surprised if her stepdaughter then refuses to visit,” the mental health expert added. “I would suggest a sensible informed internet use policy in the home, where smartphones are allowed but with set boundaries that are agreed by all adults in advance.”

Fiona went on to elaborate on the relationship between Jill and her stepdaughter, stating: “She is not the child’s parent; therefore, how their relationship evolves is governed not just by her but also the child’s parents.

“If they want her to have a significant role in their child’s life, the parents should support her to build a trusted and mutually respectful relationship with her. However, if they are not keen on her being involved in their child‘s life, they should be clear about this and not give ambiguous messages about their expected role for her in their child’s life.”

Jill’s testimony ignited heated reactions on social media

The child is not "identifying as" a fox, they're playing at being, or pretending to be, a fox. Using the same vocabulary for this sort of harmless fantasy as is used for gender identity just confuses anyone trying to come to terms with understanding them.

This is actually a real thing dating back 17,000 years, I reccomend doing more research of a subject before commenting on the subject- if you want, here's a link to learning more about alterhumans. https://www.therian-guide.com/index.php/2-therianthropy

I have to admit, I don't find most of it bad at all. Children test their limits, explore, experiment and rebel. What did we do back then? Maybe drank alcohol? Smoked in secret? Did we run away from home at night? I think a fox costume is at least amusing and not very harmful to health. And our parents will also have labeled our smoking and our metal music and our punk or goth outfits as "attention seeking". And rightly so. :D Every era just has its own generational clashes. So many people have forgotten their own youth. Where I also have concerns though: Social media - that can actually be a dangerous thing, who the child is contacting or vice versa, who is trying to find out who the child is and where they live! I would really take a hard look at what is allowed for the child and to what extent - and what is definitely not! And work a lot on openness and trust with the child!

A kid playing make believe is normal. I'm a furry (someone who has costumes of original characters who are anthropomorphic animals, not rude), and I've got a costume piece for a centaur outfit. My putting a horse butt on doesn't make me a horse, or a centaur, it makes me a nerd. I did crazy original character stories and fantasy roleplay at the same age, saying I was an Andalite and trying to speak without moving my mouth. It's a kid playing imaginary, it's nothing like being trans.

therians aren't playing imaginary- they could also be called transspecies. It's a real thing dating back 17,000 years. Not trying to be rude; as I am both a therian and a furry, but trying to educate :)

I did weird stuff when I was 13 too. Thankfully there was no internet to document it though! :) I'd just ignore it and she'll decide it's stupid on her own after a few weeks. But they need to stop letting her post inappropriate videos on YouTube. That's dangerous.

The bio mom helping her create the Youtube account and encouraging posting is the issue. There's a reason social media sites restrict children from creating accounts.

My daughter identified as an animal when she was young. Before the internet and YouTube. As a teenager, she had her furry period. Today she is a very healthy young woman mentally. I asked her questions, I discussed it with her. I didn't judge, she saw that I loved her whether she was human or therian. That's the important thing about it.

I am a therian; I am here to explain everything it truly is. I will start off by saying this: Therianthropy is not new, it has been traced back 17,000 years in cave paintings. The formal description is someone who identifies INVOLINTARILY as a non-human animal on a NON-PHYSICAL level. Meaning they identify as an animal psychologically, spiritually, or mentally, but they physically identify as a human. Quadrobics is a sport most therians do to feel closer to their theriotype(s), which is the animal(s) that they identify as. Quadrobics is the sport of running around on all fours and can give you great upper body strength. The different kinds of gear there is, like the tails and masks, don't make someone a therian. quadrobics and gear is not something exclusive to therians. anyone can do this. most therians struggle greatly with different things such as Species dysphoria and different kinds of shifts. Shifting is where you go into a different perspective/headspace and your theriotype.

Elliot (He/it)
Community Member
7 months ago DotsCreated by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

there are ghost shifts, when you feel like you have different features of your theriotype(s) like wings, claws, and tails, there are mental shifts, where you shift into the perspective of the animal. Different shifts can cause longing for something you can never have; an animals' body. Wearing gear can ease the pain a bit. All ages can be therians, there's no 'cut off' limit. Therians do not 'grow out' of this. This is something they will have to deal with for the rest of their life. Transspecies people have had to struggle with discrimination for a while now; up to getting bullied to the point where they comm1t svicide, to the point where they're getting slaughtered by others. I would also like to add something in about Furries, because a TON of people do not understand the differences.

I feel so bad for this kid. They're just expressing and discovering themselves. I was very similar when I was very young, not anymore but no hate to others who do. there are such things as therians you know, they're still people and are not harmful. idky people hate them so much. I'm a furry ( which are different), so I know how painful the hate can be, and looking back at how I was as a kid, if I haven't discovered furries first, i'd definitely be a therian.

Playing, trying to figure out what makes you happy all well and good. I'm sure the school won't let her pretend there so there has to be some limits. My problem is the clothing she chose. You don't have to traumatize children to explain some people online want to hurt them and you want them to be safe. No real names. No addresses. No talking to people parents don't know.

First off, this child is far to young to definitively say she's part of the therian community. She's a child, playing make-believe, like any other child. Her imagination just happens to be more wild (no pun intended) than most. Until she's an adult who still feels part of her identity is linked to an animal, let's stop labelling her. Secondly, until I reached high school, I pretended to be a lot of things: a wolf, an elf, a dragon shapeshifter, a Vulcan, a demon... the list went on and on. I wish I could say I grew out of it, but even now, in late middle-age, I still cosplay at various things. The only thing that really changed is I grew up and stopped saying, "I am SO an X/Y/Z/Whatever!" And even then, I didn't really believe I was -- I just wanted OTHER PEOPLE to believe it, because it made me feel unique and special. Which seems like what's going on with this girl. Her little sister joining in is also normal -- she wants to be a part of big sister's game. (cont. in reply)

(cont.) If the adults around her would just stop freaking out like she was crazy and abnormal, she'd use her pretend to find herself and eventually let go of insisting she's really her imaginary characters. Though she might never lose her love of playing pretend and dressing up as them -- and that's fine too. Playing pretend is fine at any age, as long as you can acknowledge it's pretend. Thirdly, while it's nice her mother supports her interests, she absolutely shouldn't be letting her put it online. No children should have YT channels, in my opinion. There are too many adults who use YT and other social media to target and groom kids and teenagers -- for the simple reason that kids and teenagers are not experienced enough to see red flags via online communication, and they are easier to approach in secret via the internet. Her mom should take that channel down.

I definitely think this may be a cosplay thing; perhaps she’s seen a cosplay event on social media & decided that she wants to cosplay as a fox character, thinking “Oh, that looks like fun! I wanna be a fox!”. She’s still so young, she doesn’t really know how deep cosplay gets; how it can evolve into mature acts for views online or even meet up with others who have a fetish for it. Hopefully this is a thing she’ll soon tire of, or perhaps realise she’s getting unwanted attention & bail out. Otherwise, it may require an intervention from the parents (with help from the therapist, of course). 🤔

Gee can't see the parallels with anything else in the world right now. Why are we not okay with a kid pretending to be a fox but okay with kids pretending to be other genders? One is significantly less damaging to the body, doesn't make you a life long medical patient, and doesn't require infringing on other people's rights. I'm not arguing that genuine trans people exist, I know many. However, it sets a dangerous precedent to let a literal child decide to alter their body without seeing a therapist to get to the root issue. Think Nex Benedict. Used as a prop by media, when the truth is that their father was m0l3sting and r4ping them. Kid needed therapy, not a s3x change.

How f*cking dare you. Nex Benedict, may they rest in peace, was physically assaulted for their identity, to the point that they died the next day. On top of that, the attackers aren't facing any charges. Where did you hear that they were m0l3sted? Even if it's true, how dare you insinuate that it "made" them nonbinary? How dare you use a child who was as good as killed by their own classmates to prove a point about why people like Nex should be further restricted from being themselves? Queer youth are not the problem. The system that suppresses queer youth and downplays their deaths is the problem.

we don't think we're animals- it's a bit different than that. It's a belief and identity you can't just choose. It's been recorded back from 17,000 years ago, so it's also not new. Another word for it is Transspecies. It's a non-physical identity, like a psychological thing.

Pin a tail on them. Pack them off to school. Sorry just my opinion but in my day it was called attention seeking. We bend over backwards to keep them happy, when being honest with them, would benefit so much more.

it's actually an involunary experience that's been recorded multiple times througout history, the first recording dating back 17,000 years in cave paintings. I reccomend doing more reasearch on therian wiki.

Elliot (He/it)
Community Member

there are ghost shifts, when you feel like you have different features of your theriotype(s) like wings, claws, and tails, there are mental shifts, where you shift into the perspective of the animal.

Is this post anti-therian? That's rude to me and my ppl. The real problem is that she posts that on Youtube at age 13, far too young an age to have your own channel.

Love the people ignoring the therapist talking about the matter and explaining that thus behavior as long as it doesn't effect their ability to socialize is okay. Do professional opinions just not matter to people here? Uneducated opinions are better?

as long as shes not peeing or pooping in the streets in front of everyone and randomly attacking or otherwise assaulting them like a wild animal would then who the heck cares? but i do agree with removing her niot having a youtube account, or at the least make sure she doesnt post videos that show herself or anything that can identify her address

Coming from another therian, i reccomend doing reasearch before commenting on anything along the lines of this. https://therian.fandom.com/wiki/Therianthropy here; for reaserch

"If you're a fox you can't live inside. You need to live outside with the other foxes." Ought to take care of that delusional behavior. Just make sure to follow up with therapy and find out where this bizarre behavior is coming from.
