There’s more to movie characters than the color of their skin. And not every movie about minorities has to be about their struggles. Sometimes, audience members want to watch awesome people do cool wizard or sci-fi stuff on-screen without being reminded of the challenges they face every day. That’s the idea that TikTok creator Chinforshort (aka Chinyelu Mwaafrika from Indianapolis) put across in a video that’s been going viral.

Chin’s idea is simple: he’s had enough of ‘black pain’ movies that focus exclusively on racism, slavery, and civil rights. They’ve had enough of watching struggles that are only based on how people look and where the main premise is “being black is hard.” What the video creator wants is high-quality films with good stories and black characters facing more challenges than “just being black.”

More info: TikTok | Instagram | Twitter | YouTube

Chin shared a video where he explained why he’s had enough of ‘black pain’ movies. Check his TikTok out below

The video creator suggested that filmmakers bring back black fantasy films with adventurers killing dragons, as well as sci-fi stories about exploring space and fighting aliens. And, you know what, he’s absolutely spot-on. Those movies sound awesome and we need more of them in our lives.

Chin’s friend chimed in, suggesting that black wizards are a cool premise and also pointed out that a proper coming of age story without police brutality would be good to see featured as well. The video creator summed everything up by pointing out that if the main villain is racism itself, he’d rather watch something else.

In an article, The New York Post suggested that it all comes down to a lack of representation. According to them, white Hollywood only knows how to tell stories about ‘black pain’ because it only has a few limited narratives available to them.

Writer and director Justin Simien, who debuted in 2014 with ‘Dear White People,’ said in a 2016 roundtable with The Hollywood Reporter that “there is an obsession with black tragedy.”

He said: “If you see a black movie, it’s typically historical, and it tends to deal with our pain. You know what that says, very subtly? It says that we’re not human. Because human beings are multifaceted.”

Here’s how some people have been reacting to the video since it was posted

What did you think of the video, dear Pandas? Would you like to see Hollywood put out more fantasy, sci-fi, and coming of age films with black characters? Do you think that ‘black pain’ movies play an important role or do you have a more cynical view that they’re how filmmakers pander to audiences? On a scale of 1 to 10, how cool do you think black wizards are? Share your thoughts and ideas in the comment section below!

You'll see this trend with a lot of underrepresented groups. For instance, for many years almost all the comedians you saw who were women, black, Asian, etc. would have stand up routines based around their difficulties as being a member of that group or what it was like to be in that group. Meanwhile, the white male comedians would cover every topic known to man. I've seen that changing recently, which is awesome. Everyone should get to tell all the stories :-)

True. But as a Mexican American, I also find it meaningful to listen to comedians that have a shared cultural heritage like me, such as Anjelah Johnson or Geroge Lopez. I can relate to their comedy in a way that I cannot relate to a lot of white people's comedy.

There's so much horribleness and struggle in the world already , I don't want it on my screen particularly. I watch movies, etc., as a means of escape and I completely agree with this guy - I want to see minorities face other challenges which are not centred around race/gender/sexuality/disability. I want to see on the screen where people are excepted for who they are as an individual and not as a demographic. And maybe one day we will get to live on that world.

Although I can't speak on behalf of Black people, I agree on behalf of the LGBTQ community! Gender & sexuality is not our entire personality, so don't make movies as if that's our defining character trait. Make characters who just happen to be not heterosexual, just happen to be not cisgender, just happen to be not white, just happen to be not ablebodied, just happen to be minorities. Being "different" is just part of everyday life for us. Yes we face problems such as discrimination, but we're human beings with full, rich lives. We overcome a wide variety of obstacles & movies need to show that more.

I agree with you. It also will help with the "normalization" of minority. People will be less likely to discriminate some people if they see similarities with them

I totally agree with this guy. I appreciate shows like Bridgerton, Schitt's Creek, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, etc because they just cast the roles with appropriate characters and kind of just ignore gender and race. The people are diverse but the focus is on the story.

Yes, like in Schitt's Creek, the son and daughter are so beyond ridiculous that their sexualities are low down on the list of defining characteristics. And I love every moment of it.

The thing I like best about Star Trek series like Next Generation and Deep Space Nine? Nobody cares that you're different, no matter what that means. They accommodate for differences when needed, but otherwise, you're just there being you alongside everyone else. Sisko was always treated with exactly the level of respect that any other Starfleet captain got, nobody cared what color his skin was. That said, 90s Trek was still sorely lacking in overall diversity of the actors portraying characters...

Yessss! We absolutely need to see more diversity! It is inspiring to see a person who looks like you having a normal, successful life, instead of being reminded of how hard it is to succeed in this world. As a Mexican woman, I’m so tired of being represented in movies by maids, nannies, or fetishized as a sexy Latina.

I was wondering when some in the black community would start seeing that Hollywood is patronizing them with those kinds of movies and TV shows. They don't have to make a black person a Victim or over-empowered. Suits did a great job with the blacks on the show. They were just people. Old stuff, like Sanford and Son, the Jeffersons, the Cosby Show (regardless of how Bill turned out). The Expanse has a great black character, as do so many others. They don't have to be Victims.

I just made this same argument not to long ago. I watch booktube (Youtube videos about books) and there was a video about a group of black women talking about black romance and this topic came up. They got a lot of backlash but I could see this as being part of their point. Black pain is consumable and when you see major films/TV shows/books, the main center of it is POC suffering. These movies can be powerful and inspiring, but when the bulk of the most popular media surrounding POC is things like 12 Years A Slave, that is overwhelming and it becomes this endless cycle of depression. The panel of black women got attacked for saying they wanted "normal" romance and black romance was largely centered around violence and drugs. People took a lot of offense to the idea that black romance was not normal, and I think this was an unfortunate case of bad choice of words. I think it is unhealthy and demoralizing to see people who look like you always struggling in every situation.

This guy makes a really good point. To be honest, I never viewed it that way. I thought that the 'black pain' movies did a great job of portraying their struggles. But it turns out I was rather naive. There should be more movie roles in which the minority character is already successful, rather than struggling to reach success.

"Black pain" movies are for white people to feel good about themselves, so they can tell themselves that they're good, caring people because they feel bad for the poor black people before they complain to their congressmen that they need more laborers imported from China because their $7.15-an-hour, zero-benefits maid sassed at them.

He has a great point and I wish directors and screenwriters would respect this. There’s sooooo many ideas out there that aren’t civil rights related. It could just be a normal movie about whatever and let a black person be the lead.

I think if the issues that are portrayed in these movies were apart of the education curriculum we wouldnt have to rely on big pictures to point them out. Most schools do not teach this stuff. I think children need to learn the true history of America. Yes parents need to take part in having these discussions at home but this should be a part of the education system also. My granddaughters school did one project for black history month and none of the homework or studies assigned besides adding some pictures to a poster board with a little bit of context. And i think its shameful. If anyone has not seen it Amend on Netflix with Will Smith was amazing and the type of things they should be teaching and showing in schools. My children have been watching it with their children to open up the discussion early on. I think that is what needs to happen in order for our children to prevent history from repeating itself.

Okay, I agree, BUT... The struggle movies, and historical movies are made to educate people that would otherwise be in-educated on those things. I believe it's important. It's for the public to collectively shake their heads and say "wow, we need to fix these problems", and I think that's important as well. There are shows and movies that put minorities in hero roles and sci-fi epics, etc. probably not enough, but we are getting there.

Wow. Thats enlightening. My mom was born in Africa. So because of that I feel a tiny golden thread that tethers me to there. But also to the people who are the bloodline of those who my people literally stole from their home. My first friend was black. Her name was Mariah. We lived in white trash county w.v. can you see where im going. So racism has affected me too in a strange way. A distant way. Because im not gonna sit here and say I understand something as deeply complex as an eon of oppression. I do not. But I do know that if I were black. I would also like to see my people being represented in normal ways. Because they are not only what has happened to them. I wanna see a black dragonslayer too dammit. I wanna see Othello and Desdemona and he be represented as something other than an object of oppression and pain. I dunno how thia message has translated from my brain to this text but I hope everyone knows that this was from a place of love. Being human is weird, guys.

It’s a thin line. It’d be wrong to pretend the struggles minorities face don‘t exist, but I also believe if you keep portraying a minority‘s suffering, it adds to them being viewed as 'different'. My favourite shows are those that include minorities but don’t focus on their problems permanently. Brooklyn99 is a perfect example: Both Holt‘s and Diaz‘ struggles with their sexuality are addressed, but they’re never what the character is about. When I think of Holt, the first word popping into my head is 'robot'. When I think of Diaz, it‘s 'badass' and when I think of Kevin, it’s 'OMG HE‘S THE PERFECT HUSBAND I WANT HIM!!!' They’re all gay or bi, but you‘d never think of them as 'the gay one' / 'the bi one'. Neither would you think of Holt or Terry as 'the black one'. They‘re Holt and Diaz and Kevin and Terry who just happen to be gay, bi and/or black.

What not many people realize is that Science Fiction has long had black and mixed race characters who are either essential to the plot or the lead character. Did you know that the main character in Starship Troopers is black? That Andre Norton had black, "mixed race", Native Americans, and women as her protagonists? Science Fiction has always taken the lead.

White female Boomer here, and I'm going to be perfectly honest. If I want to be educated, I read a book. If I want to be informed I watch the News Hour. I watch movies to be entertained, not depressed. My favorite genre is romcom, and I don't care what race the characters are. I've watched "Hitch" numerous times because it's sweet and funny. I loved "Jane the Virgin" and "Bridgerton". There are innumerable other movies and series I've loved with minority casts. There are also innumerable movies with white casts that I hated or refused to watch at all because they were dreary or distressing. So yeah, bring on more movies and series that feature minority actors in roles that are purely entertaining instead of ostensibly enlightening.

Also: in the recent Star Wars movie Finn was done a disservice. He felt all set up to become a surprise Jedi/force user. Maybe even one of the most important characters with great story arch. I loved the otherland books where the most important characters are black and (excluding a few) smart, detailed and characters you learn to appreciate. It would make a spectacular sf show. It's got diversity up the wazoo and not of the "this characters whole personality is that she's gay" kind either. Think ready player one but with a more believable take on vr and near future tech.

Well in Sci Fi you do have a Black led show, that was DS9 and many have black leads in them and in key roles, SAaB back in the 90's had the Black officer in charge of the fleet for instance. However we do need more movies where black people are treated just as people and not story narratives

Yes, thank you. There are lots of interesting stories of black people who are successful - and not because they are black and overcame racism but because they had a goal, and worked to achieve it.

I hit my fill of "black pain" movies in the 1990's. That's why "Waiting to Exhale" was such a success. It wasn't that it was such a great movie. It was that it portrayed black people leading normal (if not a bit drama filled) lives.

Yes, thank you. There are lots of interesting stories of black people who are successful - and not because they are black and overcame racism but because they had a goal, and worked to achieve it.
