I got clean for my cat. I was in the darkest place I'd ever been (add!cted to coca!ne and barb!turates, in massive debt from buying drúgs, in an abúsive relationship) and I hit my personal rock bottom. I was preparing a massive OD in order to commit súicide. Then one day I really "saw" my girl - *I* was responsible for her. She relied on ME for everything. I was her world. If I k!lled myself, she would then belong either to my abúsive partner (bad) or to my horrible family (worse.) So - I literally fought add!ction and got clean for her, because she needed me. I've been clean for 4 years now. I've got two dogs and four other cats, but she's still my best girl and the queen of the whole horde XD kohl_kohl_...e8a3d2.jpg
I'm so glad that Panda censored the word D R U G because otherwise, after reading that obscene word, I would have become a h****n a****t and died in the street. Thank you, Panda Censorship!
And, of course, Panda then censors the words H E R O I N and A D D I C T. Way to go, freedom-of-speech guys.
Load More Replies...You're my super hero dear man. ✨ Congratulations and a bag 'o treats. Everybody wins here. Bless your heart repeatedly.
The current state of events is not ideal, even this usually cheerful Panda has to admit that. Political uncertainties, the climate crisis, and billionaires not being happy having a billion dollars – these are all pretty valid reasons for stress. In fact, according to new research, 47% of Gen Z and Millennials feel constant worry.
The media we consume plays a big part in that. To put it mildly, reading the news bums us out. In a 2022 global survey by the Reuters Institute, the majority of people said they actively try to avoid the news. In Brazil, for example, 54% of the respondents said they selectively don't watch the news. In the UK, the rate was at 46%.
About aardvarks...
It has always seriously annoyed me that the main character in the TV cartoon Arthur...
was meant to be an aardvark.
The single most defining feature of the animal is its snout, but Arthur has NO NOSE AT ALL.
There should be laws about that. download-6...cd3430.jpg
That kid needs to be in US First Robotics, First Lego League Jr or First Lego League depending on his age then First Robotics in highschool. He designed a Lego wheelchair for a puppy. He seems like a natural born engineer and can win scholarships. Robotics teams have designed power chairs for people.
Thank you for caring so much. The look on the puppy's face (2nd Picture) is so beautiful.
She's ridiculously cute even out of her wheelchair.

It's not always just the negativity that puts people off the news. The Reuters Institute also found out that young and less educated people don't watch or read the news because they find it hard to follow and comprehend. "The news media could do much more to simplify language and better explain or contextualise complex stories," they concluded.
You might think that it is all social media's fault. And while that's true to a certain degree (Facebook still was the most popular platform to access news), people consume the news differently in other parts of the world. In the Netherlands, for example, print newspapers are surprisingly popular. In Japan, people still rely on television as their primary source of news.
Good company. Very good if you're looking for odd stuff as well. Their masa harina for making tamales is awesome.
Hmm, does he have "secret santa" vibes for anyone else? The anonymous guy who goes around handing people cash and shows up on the US news every year?
He certainly looks like Santa in his summer plumage
Load More Replies...It is complex, because among other things, who brings a case on behalf of the non-human entity? That’s not impossible to deal with, as most jurisdictions already have rules for guardianship, but then you run into questions of who is a fit guardian. In my (by no means perfect) opinion, public interest standing might be better.

The same pattern continues "down under", as the majority of Australians say that they are "worn out by the volume of news." In 2019, a whopping 62% said they regularly avoid the news for at least some period of time.
Misinformation is a big reason why folks turn away from the news media. Last year, researchers at the University of Michigan found that Americans from both sides of the political spectrum feel bombarded with information from many different sources and feel that avoiding news is the only way out.
So the Murder Chickens could actually help humans instead of just hunting us.
Maybe that’s why they hurt us, and have been waiting for us to discover this!

Landcare in Australia does the same. One of the first things my mum signed up with when moving to the country. As well as planting in public land areas, they will plant natives on private properties if the owners sign on with them. Help with planting on others land and then they help plant on yours.
A tree is not a tree is not a tree. Someplace they destroyed peat bogs and planted trees, even getting a bunch of celebrities involved. Turns out that the destruction of the peat bogs released greenhouse gases and the trees themselves aren’t as good as sequestering them. Where was that? Scotland or northern England? I don’t remember exactly …
England should do that in Ireland too since they almost deforested the entire island
Until some local councillor is like "nah, take em down, we are going to build houses here".
I don’t understand how people fleeing a deadly fire can just leave their cats and dogs behind to suffer and die. These people are monsters.
Sometimes they don’t have a chance because the animals panic and flee. Also a (feral) cat colony isn’t going to be requesting a ride from anyone.
Load More Replies...When those who identify as Democrats feel misinformed about the new media, they usually turn to nonpartisan news outlets. When those who identify as Republicans feel like they can't differentiate between what's fact and what's fiction in their news media feed, they use less news media overall, including less conservative news media.

That's one fine looking fella. I cannot express how much I adore dogs. All fauna and flora sure - but dogs? Magnificent creatures.
One of the study's authors, assistant professor of communication and media at the University of Michigan Ariel Hasell, said that people's distrust in "the establishment" is one of the main causes. "When we don't trust institutions, we don't have those mental shortcuts to determine whether nonpartisan news outlets are sharing information viewers can trust."
Something the US will never understand. Surely it is better to work 2, 3 jobs. Right? 🙃
And the government are trying to stop this becoming the norm, no idea why
I wouldn't mind betting that if it became a large scale thing it would have knock on benefits for businesses providing services and retail and such since people would have more free time.
That’s how it always happens. Even when people are at work in the US management thinks they shouldn’t do anything else like take a walk, browse Bored Panda, order groceries online, etc even though those improve productivity. Now there’s this cr*ap about going “back” to offices although there’s no improvement in anything by doing so and it makes life worse if people have to commute, especially in a private vehicle. Heck, managers complain about employees who leave work at the end of the day instead of hours later.
I would LOVE a job of 10 hrs 4 days a week!!! LOVE LOVE LOVE to have it.
It's NEVER too late. NOPE. Adults, please don't give up on a dream, passion, desire, learning growing, none of it! (Said the OG senior lady, 72 going on 35 😉).
Yet it's unfair to say that people tune the news out only for their own benefit. Those who follow the news religiously might say that it's selfish to be uninformed and to even take pride in it. But experts say that we're choosing to disengage not only because of news fatigue. They think another phenomenon, compassion fatigue, might be at play here.
Thanks to seeing him constantly pop up on BP, I knew instantly who he was when his passing was mentioned.

I am in the uk, I had to have a blood transfusion while pregnant (in 1998] which means I cannot donate blood but when my son got to 16 he started to donate his blood in my place. I’m incredibly proud of him 😊
Load More Replies...That would have to be plasma not blood. You can only donate blood every couple of months
All heroes don't wear capes! This man was without a doubt a hero. I'm sorry he died but he lived a life that was more than worthwhile!
If you’ve seen it you’ll recall that the costume designer in The Incredibles declared “No Capes!” There was a character who wasn’t told that so you can guess what happened,
Load More Replies...If I recall it was because there was something special about his blood that some babies needed. Sorry I can't remember the details, but it was very specific.
When we didn't have the 24-hour news cycle, compassion fatigue mainly affected healthcare workers. Overexposure to other people's trauma would cause doctors and nurses mental and physical distress. But now we as news consumers also start to feel the symptoms: numbness, depression, and a decreased sense of purpose.
Call me cynical, but I dont't believe anything about that picture wwas "accidental".

Load More Replies...One of my best friends is currently fighting breast cancer. I can only hope they find a cure for the kind of cancer she has before it's too late.
Where was this research when I got my diagnosis? By the time this is proven or disproven to work as they had hoped, I will be gone from this Earth.
I'm sorry for what you are going through, but I imagine that this research was being worked on/actually researched when you got your diagnosis, or perhaps this research had not yet been discovered. I can only imagine at how this must make you feel.
Load More Replies...Oh i do hope so one of my friends has just been diagnosed of breast cancer.
Fun fact (not): part of the reason breast cancer is so difficult to fight is that there are over 100 types of breast cancer. It is hard to diagnose correctly, so there has kind of been a "one size fits all" type of treatment. As they are learning more, they are better diagnosing and treating.
There have been instances in the past when people disengaged from news media. Usually, it has to do with some big event or catastrophe, like 9/11. Author of Avoiding the News: Reluctant Audiences for Journalism Benjamin Toff says that we're dissatisfied with the lack of resolution in news: "None of the stories feel like they come to a conclusion in a satisfying way."

They use them in the animal habitat to make areas for the animal to hide/play in. Obviously not the elephants though. Too big to hide ;)

From the original: 99-year-old Annie from the Netherlands had the chance to take a wish off of her bucket list. For years she had wanted to feel what it's like to get arrested. Citizens who haven’t committed a crime are usually not permitted in cells, but in 2017 the Nijmegen-Zuid police officers made an exception. They picked her up from home and let her sit handcuffed in a cell for a few minutes. In the pictures, Annie, who has never committed a crime in her life, looks like the happiest prisoner in the world.
I wonder what the rest of her bucket list looks like.
Load More Replies...I plan to check that off my bucket list when I turn 90. Brace yourselves. 😈
I cannot imagine my mum doing that she would be frightened that they would keep her in for a long time. Hahaha 😂
We watch the news, see all the horrible things happening, and can't help but feel helpless. Psychiatrist Arash Javanbakht explains that our aversion to news media might be explained by one form of survival mechanism that we have: learned helplessness.
Basically, when we know we cannot control a scary or painful situation, we simply give up. Arash Javanbakht says that this is why we can't handle watching or reading the news anymore: we feel too helpless by the onslaught of terrible news and, instead of taking action, simply give up.
Why? Her presence doesn't detract from his accomplishment.

Load More Replies...The refusal by the reactionary right in the US to invest in renewable energy is baffling. Why would you continue to rely on a dirty and - this part is important so stay with me - non-renewable source of energy if there is a renewable source that is just as cheap? This is yet another way the US will be set back by the current madness coursing through our veins. China has to be over the moon that agent Krasnov is literally running the US ship of state aground.

Load More Replies...In America the sugar industry has our congressional representatives by the short hairs, so that’s not going to happen
Not even sugar in the US - it's high fructose corn syrup.
Load More Replies...This makes me so angry! I hardly ever drink fizzy pop, but on recent trips to the UK I have wanted them occasioanally, only to find on my first sip that it;s all contaminated by bloody artificial sweeteners, which taste so disgusting to me I have to throw the whole thing away. That is how they've reduced sugar consumption - instead of reducing the sweetness so that people get used to having less sugar in everything they've just replaced one, natural, sweetener with another artificial one.
Whilst I heartily agree that we should reduce sugar intake, most of the products have replaced the sugar with revolting artificial sweeteners. How about finding new recipes and products for unsweetened (or lightly sweetened) recipes instead.
I live in Europe and watch the Food Network regularly. I feel, when the baker is from Europe, the judges often complain about how not sweet enough the cake is. Have to think if that same baker would have got that critique in their home country....
Well, American bread is considered cake in most countries, so...

Good article in The Guardian: https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/jan/07/thailand-bans-imports-plastic-waste-curb-toxic-pollution
Hmmm.....i am somewhat unsure about that. Of course it is a good thing to reduce plastic no matter how but the thai gouvernment in particular should rather educate their people about plastic waste in general. Bring your own bags for example and do not throw your empty plastic bottles on the roadside. The amount of plasticpiles i have seen in thailand was sometimes pretty disgusting. Many people just do not care and nobody is going to fine them when they do it. Drop your plastic in some park in singapore and you pay a lot, thats why nobody does it.
I bet a lot of those plastic piles were from Europe and the US, exporting plastic waste is popular in these places. Look at Bangladesh, they barely use any plastic themselves most of the trash is sent there.

They should give all the methane to Elon Musk, so he can finally take off to mars. The sooner the better...
I hope research like this becomes more common. Any way we can negate polluting of any sort is to be desired.
Only people can help people, we can expect nothing from our governments, even though we pay them with our taxes
