I got clean for my cat. I was in the darkest place I'd ever been (add!cted to coca!ne and barb!turates, in massive debt from buying drúgs, in an abúsive relationship) and I hit my personal rock bottom. I was preparing a massive OD in order to commit súicide. Then one day I really "saw" my girl - *I* was responsible for her. She relied on ME for everything. I was her world. If I k!lled myself, she would then belong either to my abúsive partner (bad) or to my horrible family (worse.) So - I literally fought add!ction and got clean for her, because she needed me. I've been clean for 4 years now. I've got two dogs and four other cats, but she's still my best girl and the queen of the whole horde XD kohl_kohl_...e8a3d2.jpg kohl_kohl_jelly_roll-67f5bb2e8a3d2.jpg

The current state of events is not ideal, even this usually cheerful Panda has to admit that. Political uncertainties, the climate crisis, and billionaires not being happy having a billion dollars – these are all pretty valid reasons for stress. In fact, according to new research, 47% of Gen Z and Millennials feel constant worry.

The media we consume plays a big part in that. To put it mildly, reading the news bums us out. In a 2022 global survey by the Reuters Institute, the majority of people said they actively try to avoid the news. In Brazil, for example, 54% of the respondents said they selectively don't watch the news. In the UK, the rate was at 46%.

About aardvarks... It has always seriously annoyed me that the main character in the TV cartoon Arthur... was meant to be an aardvark. The single most defining feature of the animal is its snout, but Arthur has NO NOSE AT ALL. There should be laws about that. download-6...cd3430.jpg download-67f5ccdcd3430.jpg

It's not always just the negativity that puts people off the news. The Reuters Institute also found out that young and less educated people don't watch or read the news because they find it hard to follow and comprehend. "The news media could do much more to simplify language and better explain or contextualise complex stories," they concluded.

You might think that it is all social media's fault. And while that's true to a certain degree (Facebook still was the most popular platform to access news), people consume the news differently in other parts of the world. In the Netherlands, for example, print newspapers are surprisingly popular. In Japan, people still rely on television as their primary source of news.

It is complex, because among other things, who brings a case on behalf of the non-human entity? That’s not impossible to deal with, as most jurisdictions already have rules for guardianship, but then you run into questions of who is a fit guardian. In my (by no means perfect) opinion, public interest standing might be better.

The same pattern continues "down under", as the majority of Australians say that they are "worn out by the volume of news." In 2019, a whopping 62% said they regularly avoid the news for at least some period of time.

Misinformation is a big reason why folks turn away from the news media. Last year, researchers at the University of Michigan found that Americans from both sides of the political spectrum feel bombarded with information from many different sources and feel that avoiding news is the only way out.

"Camarria Williams, a 13-year-old from Chicago, participated in the Chicago Antibiotic Discovery Lab. This STEM outreach program is designed to inspire young students by involving them in real-world scientific research. + Camarria was tasked with collecting samples from her environment to bring back to the lab for analysis. She found some goose droppings at a local park and brought them to the lab for study. + While examining the droppings, the teen discovered Pseudomonas idahoensis, a bacterium producing a previously unknown compound - orfamide N. + It turns out that this compound is toxic to skin and ovarian cancer cells. While not antibacterial, the compound showed potential for slowing the growth of cancer cells. + Her work was published in the American Chemical Society’s Omega Journal."

A tree is not a tree is not a tree. Someplace they destroyed peat bogs and planted trees, even getting a bunch of celebrities involved. Turns out that the destruction of the peat bogs released greenhouse gases and the trees themselves aren’t as good as sequestering them. Where was that? Scotland or northern England? I don’t remember exactly …

One of the study's authors, assistant professor of communication and media at the University of Michigan Ariel Hasell, said that people's distrust in "the establishment" is one of the main causes. "When we don't trust institutions, we don't have those mental shortcuts to determine whether nonpartisan news outlets are sharing information viewers can trust."

That’s how it always happens. Even when people are at work in the US management thinks they shouldn’t do anything else like take a walk, browse Bored Panda, order groceries online, etc even though those improve productivity. Now there’s this cr*ap about going “back” to offices although there’s no improvement in anything by doing so and it makes life worse if people have to commute, especially in a private vehicle. Heck, managers complain about employees who leave work at the end of the day instead of hours later.

Yet it's unfair to say that people tune the news out only for their own benefit. Those who follow the news religiously might say that it's selfish to be uninformed and to even take pride in it. But experts say that we're choosing to disengage not only because of news fatigue. They think another phenomenon, compassion fatigue, might be at play here.

When we didn't have the 24-hour news cycle, compassion fatigue mainly affected healthcare workers. Overexposure to other people's trauma would cause doctors and nurses mental and physical distress. But now we as news consumers also start to feel the symptoms: numbness, depression, and a decreased sense of purpose.

Fun fact (not): part of the reason breast cancer is so difficult to fight is that there are over 100 types of breast cancer. It is hard to diagnose correctly, so there has kind of been a "one size fits all" type of treatment. As they are learning more, they are better diagnosing and treating.

There have been instances in the past when people disengaged from news media. Usually, it has to do with some big event or catastrophe, like 9/11. From the original: 99-year-old Annie from the Netherlands had the chance to take a wish off of her bucket list. For years she had wanted to feel what it's like to get arrested. Citizens who haven’t committed a crime are usually not permitted in cells, but in 2017 the Nijmegen-Zuid police officers made an exception. They picked her up from home and let her sit handcuffed in a cell for a few minutes. In the pictures, Annie, who has never committed a crime in her life, looks like the happiest prisoner in the world.

I cannot imagine my mum doing that she would be frightened that they would keep her in for a long time. Hahaha 😂

We watch the news, see all the horrible things happening, and can't help but feel helpless. Psychiatrist Arash Javanbakht explains that our aversion to news media might be explained by one form of survival mechanism that we have: learned helplessness.

Basically, when we know we cannot control a scary or painful situation, we simply give up. Arash Javanbakht says that this is why we can't handle watching or reading the news anymore: we feel too helpless by the onslaught of terrible news and, instead of taking action, simply give up.

The refusal by the reactionary right in the US to invest in renewable energy is baffling. Why would you continue to rely on a dirty and - this part is important so stay with me - non-renewable source of energy if there is a renewable source that is just as cheap? This is yet another way the US will be set back by the current madness coursing through our veins. China has to be over the moon that agent Krasnov is literally running the US ship of state aground.

This makes me so angry! I hardly ever drink fizzy pop, but on recent trips to the UK I have wanted them occasioanally, only to find on my first sip that it;s all contaminated by bloody artificial sweeteners, which taste so disgusting to me I have to throw the whole thing away. That is how they've reduced sugar consumption - instead of reducing the sweetness so that people get used to having less sugar in everything they've just replaced one, natural, sweetener with another artificial one.

Whilst I heartily agree that we should reduce sugar intake, most of the products have replaced the sugar with revolting artificial sweeteners. How about finding new recipes and products for unsweetened (or lightly sweetened) recipes instead.

Hmmm.....i am somewhat unsure about that. Of course it is a good thing to reduce plastic no matter how but the thai gouvernment in particular should rather educate their people about plastic waste in general. Bring your own bags for example and do not throw your empty plastic bottles on the roadside. The amount of plasticpiles i have seen in thailand was sometimes pretty disgusting. Many people just do not care and nobody is going to fine them when they do it. Drop your plastic in some park in singapore and you pay a lot, thats why nobody does it.

I bet a lot of those plastic piles were from Europe and the US, exporting plastic waste is popular in these places. Look at Bangladesh, they barely use any plastic themselves most of the trash is sent there.

Unfortunately there are people in the country that can’t wait that long. Those are the people who will be affected most, those who cannot afford it.

Honestly, this makes a lot of sense. Parkinsons is brutal, but we evolved to frequently be highly active in ways most cultures have lost in the last 5 thousand years. Exercise is genuinely good for us

My oldest brother was a teacher teaching the beginners until one decided to go up without securing himself properly, he fell right on to my brother and ended up getting cancer on his spine. He didn't make it he died 2 months later he was the life and soul of our family, i miss him so much he was only 40 years old.

"Pet me!" and "leave me alone!", handily so, are represented by the very same expression. So we only gotta learn to read one to understand both. Yay.

Thank you, with that information I was able to determine that the yellow objects are Prickly Moses (a plant I am not familiar with). I was curious because they kind of look like bugs in this photo but I suspected they were not bugs. :)

AI overview: -Norway relies heavily on hydropower for electricity, with over 98% of its electricity coming from sustainable, clean sources, primarily hydropower (around 90%) and wind power (just under 10%)

where are they getting the electricity?... from oil and natural gas burning plants, right? They are NOT saving the enviroment.

Actually, while Norway is the 3rd largest oil exporter in the world, the majority of their electricity comes from hydroelectricity. Bobo, let me introduce you to a magical website called Wikipedia, and to an amazing resource called Google search. . .

As much as I would love for pets to live longer, this method can’t possibly be having more benefits than risks. Ageing is natural and forcibly stopping/slowing it down sounds like a recipe for disaster. Such a forcibly prolonged life might come with so much suffering to the animal while the humans celebrate having their pet around longer.

I saw this happen to a kid when I was around 4-5. Poor kid was screaming so loud as the firefighters tried to cut it off. Happy he looks well (if a bit sleepy) and that was very kind of the firefighters.
