Marissa Sunny, CPDT-KA and senior dog lifesaving specialist at Best Friends Animal Society, told Bored Panda that "dogs typically see their owners as family and their best friends! They grow extremely attached to people in their lives and will remember them even years later."

If you end up on a dog's good person list, it will definitely show you; dogs typically express affection by soliciting attention, "giving kisses", and actively trying to spend time with you," Sunny explained.

Science confirms that spending time with our canine companions does wonders for our wellbeing.

For example, a comprehensive review of studies published between 1950 and 2019 discovered that dog owners had a lower risk of death—studies suggest that dog owners have lower blood pressure levels and improved responses to stress.

Interestingly, people who had experienced previous coronary events had an even higher level of risk reduction for death.

Also, dogs make us a lot more sociable. Think about it, aren't people with canines more approachable? There's always a conversation starter wagging its tail next to them!

Researchers have found that about 40 percent of dog owners have an easier time making friends—these animals really help us to get to know strangers and form new relationships.

With all of the unconditional love we receive from dogs, it's only fair we do everything in our power to make them feel content too. "For dogs to live a happy, fulfilling life, it is important that their families make sure all their needs are being met, not just the basic ones," Sunny highlighted.

"Dogs have emotional needs that can be filled by spending time with you and getting attention. They also have mental and intellectual needs that can be met by going on walks and playing games. It is important to look at your dog as a full creature with a developed mind to meet all its emotional, physical, and health needs."
