If not for the three grey hairs peeking out, I’d feel as fresh as new. It seems like only yesterday we’d drink Capri Sun, burn CDs and listen to the Smashing Pumpkins. Speaking of the latter, kids these days call it “dad rock,” and how can you blame them?

The oldest of Gen Z, aka the newest generation that was born between 1997 and 2012, is now 24. No, it’s not you who are 24, it’s the kids who have no clue what “pick up the phone'' means.

So today, we’re diving deep into the world of no illusion, ready to face one fact we all dread (hence the booming skincare industry among millennials!)—we are old. Thanks to the corner of Reddit ‘Heck I’m Old,’ we have a collection of posts to make you feel not just old, but rather ancient. “When you look at kids nowadays and see their music you can't help but think of how everything is old,” says the group’s description and from what you see below, they ain’t lying.

Transparencies expedited instruction in math. I made my own which gave the HS students lots of examples/practice. Why transparencies? Because the stinking textbooks were so bad after the 1980s. I cared that kids learned. Publisher: AMSCO WAS awesome! Merrill was OK. Most publishers put fluff in their books. Kids came out knowing next to nothing if the teacher relied solely on the books by publishers whose problems and explanations were subpar.

Now, who out there remembers filmstrips! They came with a little floppy record that had a little narration on it, punctuated by little "bink" noises every time it was time to advance to the next frame. This was back in second grade, so it was around 1969 or 1970.

Imagine ducking trying to do homework checkup (teachers assistant job) with kids trying to learn programming in the university when the classroom didn't have anything more complicated than that effin projector. Had to tell them to bring printed out notes and be ready to attack some projector foils. Also told them to complain about the classroom because we did have a laptop & projector option in our regular building if you booked it in advance.

We did not have VHS when I was in high school. We had film strips. My HS history teacher, Mr.Heath, would have double features about once/month. He would set up two screens and two film strips and offset them by 10 seconds. He would then run back and forth between the screens narrating each. They were rarely on the same topic. He was the most entertainingteacher that I have every had.

How exciting do you think it was when my third grade teacher rolled the TV into the room so we could watch Neil Armstrong jump off the ladder onto the surface of the moon, and say, "One small step for man..." One of the most exciting moments of my life. That, and when my Dad signed me up to colonize the International Space Station. He was a captain flying for Eastern Airlines at the time, and astronaut Frank Norman was Eastern's CEO. Norman signed a deal with NASA for Eastern to become the commercial carrier of the space shuttle when the station became an actual colony in space. All of the Eastern captains received an informational package in the mail that included a proposed design of the ISS; a space wheel 20 miles around and 1/4 of a mile wide. There was an illustration of a cross section of the interior of the wheel, and you could see a forest, a small lake, a road, houses, etc. My dad filled out and sent in the application for me to be a colonist!!!

The next day, I ran into my homeroom at school all excited, telling all the kids that my dad had signed me up to colonize the space station. None of them believed me and called me a liar and told me to shut the eff up. My dad let me bring the package in for show-and-tell. I did a 15-minute presentation in front of the class using the overhead projector. They believed me then, but they disliked me even more than when I got a pony for Christmas the previous December. They called me "space cadet" for the rest of my ordeal in that school. I just wanted to share my cool adventures, and they didn't give a flying m**o. I was a pretty sad kid with no friends for most of my childhood, but I went on a lot of cool trail rides in the gorgeous Connecticut countryside with my pony Domino. Eastern was run into the ground and out of business by the corporate raider dickhead Frank Lorenzo, but NASA still has my application on file!

If you ever feel like time is passing at the pace of a hadron collider, you can be sure you’re not the only one. Most of us feel that the passage of time is inevitable, and that it only makes us older (but also wiser, more confident and happy overall!).

Having said that, it's no secret that our modern society is obsessed with freezing and even turning back time. This ageing paranoia that’s sweeping across our society has been heavily fueled by social media, where young folks constantly put pressure on achievements, looks, and everything, really. Its competitive nature shows that someone is doing better and has accomplished more by your age than you have.

Being scared of ageing is not only nothing new, it seems like it creeps into the minds of younger generations obsessed with anti-ageing life choices earlier than ever in history. In 2018, a report from the Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) found that millennials felt the most negatively towards ageing, viewing it as a steep decline and assuming dementia and loneliness as inevitable.

In some extreme cases where fear of getting older interferes with your life, doctors diagnose people with gerascophobia. “Gerascophobia sufferers have very frequent thoughts about changes in their appearance due to ageing and increasingly losing control over their life as they get older. These thoughts trigger panic attacks, shortness of breath, sweating and shaking," Dr. Rose Aghdami, a consulting and coaching psychologist, told Refinery29.

"Their behavior is affected too, as they often avoid certain activities which remind them of ageing, withdraw from social contact, and become more isolated."

The RSPH has also urged people to stop using the term 'anti-ageing' popularized by the beauty industry, since it could be putting pressure on women to see ageing as something inherently detrimental. Another 2017 study found that 30% of women under 35 were regularly using anti-wrinkle products, a fact that’s so obvious when browsing through social media that you don’t need a survey for it
