'What Is This Thing' is an incredibly popular subreddit. It has over 1.8 million members, all helping people to identify the objects in their possession they have no knowledge of themselves. I have no doubt that one of the biggest reasons why this online community has gotten so massive is the fact that they constantly deliver.

With a few very rare exceptions, 'What Is This Thing' cracks one tough case after another. Show them a small round "shelf" in an old mailbox, and they will tell you it's for leaving change for the postal worker to add postage. Post a photo of a strange ceramic jar and they'll reply it's a stoneware bed warmer.

Continue scrolling to check out some of the mysteries they have recently uncovered, and after you're done, fire up Bored Panda's earlier articles about the subreddit here, here, and here.

Answer: Toy plates for a dollhouse.

FFiresticks Report

Like we've mentioned in an earlier article, the subreddit has a branch called 'Trace an Object' that searches for objects posted by Europol that are linked to child abuse cases. "We've had some luck in identifying some things, but there's more yet unsolved and more to come as Europol does release some new information every few months," the moderator team explained to us then.

At the time, the 'Trace an Object' subreddit had around 53k members but now the number has grown to 67k. So in a way, the more attention 'What Is This Thing' gets, the more help Interpol receives. Presuming people will find about 'Trace an Object' in the process as well.

Small Round “Shelf” In Old Mail Box. What Is This Thing?

Small Round “Shelf” In Old Mail Box. What Is This Thing?

Answer: for leaving change for postal worker to add postage. USPS delivery people are required to have stamps and you don't even need to catch them to buy some. If you have a piece of mail without postage you can put it in your mailbox with cash and the carrier will bring back change (if needed) the next day.

Wait...US mail boxes are for outgoing mail as well as inbound? How does that work? Does the mailman have a key for each box? Or do they not lock? If not what stops people stealing your post? Someone explain this to a Brit with a letterbox!

No locks. Nothing to stop people stealing it. Just the honor system. Even though I've never lived in a fancy neighborhood, I've never had anyone steal from my mailbox. For whatever reason, mailboxes are pretty safe from theft in the US. Amazon packages on the porch are another matter entirely.

As for theft. the US Postal Service has it's own police, and "tampering with the mail" has very serious penalties. Not worth it.

So weird. We just have a slot in the front door - letter sided stuff goes through it and anything bigger the postman knocks. Where I grew up you couldn't even put a hanging basket outside your front door without it being nicked, so I cannot imagine a mailbox lasting five minutes!

I cannot believe there are so many folks on here that don't know about flags on mailboxes. Just to confuse everyone, we have a yellow flag that goes up when the mailbox door is opened which would indicate that there was mail placed in the box since the last time you looked out at the street - how cool is that?

It’s quite cool that the US have a postman that takes their mail and delivers it. Saves a lot of time and money I expect. Still, I would t be without our beautiful red post boxes

Well some folks have communal mail box "banks". So your mail box is located on the corner of the block and requires a key to open. They mail man has a master key. I still have the old fashioned keyless mail box.

Yes, years ago we could put a stamped letter in our mail box, raise the flag & the mail man would take it to post office.

First, not all postal carriers are required to carry stamps any more. It is a federal crime to tamper with the mail. Most of the mail people get isn't worth anything to anyone. It's bills and ads. Occasionally a letter. The flag is to tell the carrier you have outgoing mail. If there is no mail to deliver they will skip your box, if the flag is up they know that even if they have no mail for you there is mail that is outgoing. A little known fact, the don't actually have to pick up out going mail. Stamps pay for delivery, not pick up and delivery. It's a service they just do. Most places would love to do away with individual boxes. In our area when a new development went in they required the builder to add in cluster boxes. Those are like the grouped boxes in apartment buildings. Each of them can be opened by the box owner. The carriers have a master key that, in some cases, opens the entire row of boxes so the carrier doesn't have to open each box.

our rural mailbox is out on the highway, it locks so nobody can steal the mail. The door has a little tray that folds out, not locked, for outgoing mail that the postman can reach. People do steal mail out here.

What is even stranger is that this mailbox door has a slot in it. As if it is SO laborious to pull open the mailbox door and insert mail. Just doo damn hard to do. Hence, the slot.

Yes, you used to be able to do that. I tried very recently but the letter carrier didn't know wtf I was talking about (this letter carrier had no uniform, but carried an official USPS bag). I called my local post office. I was reminded very nastily that there was a "paldomet" on. Ok then.

There are other subreddits that are helping the public too. And they can work together on serious cases. For example, when user and college student shadybusiness15 took apart one of their extension cords, they noticed something wasn't quite right—there were mysterious wires and a SIM card with a serial number in it. Curious, they posted photos of it to both 'What Is This Thing' and 'The Reddit Bureau of Investigation', a place where people are passionate about solving mysteries as well.

Users quickly identified the mysterious parts as audio surveillance. The contraption connected to a phone number, which the owner could call to pick up audio in his room at college. Shadybusiness15 called the number but it was already disconnected. Shady business indeed.
