Artist Remakes Popular Movie Posters In Medieval-Art-Style, And Here’s The Result (27 Pics)
Interview With ArtistImagine if the middle ages had been blessed with the magic of cinema - quite a quirky concept, right? Well, this is exactly the brainchild of a gifted French illustrator who goes by the name of Simon De Thuillières. His work is an interesting mishmash of artistic panache, a fascination for history, and a big love of movies, making for up for quite an interesting picture.
To show us what he means, De Thuillières brings his idea to life by remaking modern movie and cartoon posters with a heavy sprinkle of medieval style. Think of big names like "Avatar," "Joker," "Spider-Man," and even "Lady and the Tramp," all reimagined with a taste of the middle ages.

Given the opportunity, Bored Panda reached out to Simon De Thuillières, a French illustrator with a unique artistic perspective, blending modern movies with medieval aesthetics.
When asked about his process of selecting elements for his pieces, De Thuillières explained, "I chose to represent the works according to the elements that make it typically recognizable: a cult scene, a replica, or their poster if it is iconic. I replace absolutely everything with medieval equivalences, which pushes me to make quite tasty creations or evocations."
Ghostbusters
Transformers
Discussing the inspiration behind his unique concept, Simon mentioned the COVID-19 pandemic as the catalyst. He said, "The starting point for this creative adventure was the period of confinement linked to the spread of the great plague (COVID). Everyone wondered if society was going to collapse, and if we were going to fall back into a period of regression, such as one can imagine in the Middle Ages.
Personally, the idea of going back to the Middle Ages seemed fitting to me from the moment I envisioned what could exist in cinema. So, I began distributing versions of cinema posters reinterpreted using the graphic and symbolic codes of the Middle Ages.."
The Shining
Joker
Addressing the balance between medieval and modern elements in his work, he noted, "The notion of balance between medieval and modern elements is almost non-existent; everything must correspond as closely as possible to medieval aesthetics: decorations, friezes, initials, and the representation of places and characters, all taken from miniatures.
Of course, I have to rely on my inspiration to create equivalents for elements unknown in the Middle Ages, such as cell phones, computers, or spaceships.
Another challenging aspect for non-French speakers is the literary aspect of my creations. Indeed, the text is also medievalized, translated into Old French. This aspect delights my community as much as my drawings." He explained to Bored Panda.
The Matrix
Star Wars
On the selection of movies for his artwork, Simon revealed that it's mostly based on personal tastes and works that impacted his youth.
"My selection of popular works is essentially based on my personal tastes and the works that had the most impact on me during my youth. That is why I started with classic films from the 90s. Then, I attempted to diversify my creations by including cartoons and video games.
Currently, I believe I can adapt almost any type of film (as long as I enjoy it)."
Doctor Strange
Spider-Man
His fascination with history greatly influences his work. Simom mentioned to us that he is a part of a medieval re-enactment group and practices Historical European Martial Arts. Regarding accuracy in his work, he explained, "The medieval details present in my illuminations are primarily derived from historical sources. I extensively utilize the website of the BNF (National Library of France), which provides an incredible wealth of complete documents.
Furthermore, I have amassed my own library of visual sources over the years, curated based on aesthetic preferences."
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles
I love that this implies he's trying to teach regular turtles to be ninjas but he's still an anthropomorphic rat man
Kill Bill
The Mask
Beetlejuice
Avatar
Pulp Fiction
The Exorcist
Predator
In french, "Près de la peur" sounds a bit like "Predator" and means "Close to the fear". In the french version, Schwarzy states "Toi t'as pas une gueule de porte-bonheur". The direct translation is "your face don't look like you bring luck" and means "you're ugly" (in VO : You're one ugly motherf****). But it's written in a kind of pidgin old french.
Godzilla
Kung Fu Panda
Don't get me wrong I love Kung Fu panda but he looks like a badger XD
Lady And The Tramp
My Neighbor Totoro
Basic Instinct
Mortal Kombat
Ghost
Scream
Bad Boys
The text at the bottom is a re-writing in 'faux' old french of the "Bad boys" song. Could roughly be translated as "Naughty boys, naughty boys, what is it thou want to do, what are thou going to do ? When sheriff Johann the Brown for you shall cometh? Please narrate, what are thou going to do, what are thou going to do ?"
Alice In Wonderland
As great as she was, I don't think even Judy Garland could rock that hat!
we're off to see the wizard, the wonderful wizard oof oz, we hear he is a whiz of a whiz, if ever a whiz there was. if ever o ever a whiz there was, the wizard of oz is one because because because because becauseeee, because of the wonderful things he does, we're off see the wizard, the wonderful wizard of oooooooooz. sorry people, I was Dorothy in a play, and I couldn't pass this up.
Alice in Wonderland? Really? Anyone who doesn't even speak French can figure out this puzzle.
These were quite funny and imaginative. Let's do this instead of celebrity "news"!
Unfortunatly, you lose 30%of the comical effect if you don't know French ^^ The texts are a mix of 'fake' old french, and contain a lots of puns and play on words. It's impossible to translate (for me at least... maybe someone who has a knowledge of both old French and old English (and a heavy sense of humor).
But you translated some of them...very well, i might add. Thank you! (And humor in translation is always hard, anyway.). Seriously though I'm sure multiple people appreciated your efforts!

Load More Replies...This is great. Absolute gold!!! Almost better than American bashing!.... almost.
Oh, that can as well be done. It's striking, how few comments the thread received although it's really funny.
Load More Replies...Ooh, look up "bardcore" on YouTube! They're great, and some even have lyrics, like Somebody That I Used to Know
These are just delightful and I'd happily buy some! So glad I decided to have a look at them.
Wonder what would "Harry Potter" movies look like in this style? Hopefully without any of the "witch burning at the stake" LOL but Voldemort'd be ugly AF as usual.
I'm pretty sure he did one or two with Harry Potter. Here's his FB page : https://www.facebook.com/simondethuillieres/photos
