Having not had the opportunity to shoot images of my family before the Covid-19 pandemic, especially intimate times I decided to start this series.
For this series, I wanted to take the time to shoot common and uncommon interactions amongst my family in order to dive deeper into my Cuban heritage.
I wanted to dive into intimate everyday interactions and document my family quarantine that is both common and uncommon occurrences. I joined my brother and father to sit on the back patio daily to chat about life as they smoked cigars that are a tradition and a common activity to do for all the men in the Antona family.
In light of the quarantine placed on the nation, I also had the chance to shoot some rare interactions between my parents on camera as well, my mother giving my dad a haircut.
Capturing images that depict my mother and fathers relationship in an intimate way while also seeing the parallels of my own common interactions with my mother. Being aware of the cultural significance of hair in culture from my father’s haircut to my mother treating my head with medicine. Hair, like smoking cigars, is another source of bonding and culture.
