45 Times People Came Across Such Fantastic Second-Hand Finds, They Just Had To Share (New Pics)
InterviewShopping second-hand is now all the rage. It’s cheaper, more sustainable and environmentally friendly. It’s even more fun – you never know if you’ll find a rare knick-knack or some designer-brand piece. Second-hand items can often be not only goofy and fun, but also have a fascinating story behind them.
The Instagram page Weird Second-Hand Finds is where people send in interesting items they found while thrift shopping. The creator of the page, Sarah, was also kind enough to share some of her thoughts with us. We also spoke with recycling artist Shelly Kennagh, who told us a little bit more about reusing and repurposing thrifted items.

I wish when people posted stuff like this, they would add if there was a maker's mark. So others could try to track down kitchen stegosaurs.
Fortunately, there are people out there willing to take some time to help out on Google. I hope this gives you a starting point: https://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/henriksen-imports-whimsical-1924737551
Load More Replies...Bored Panda reached out to the creator of Weird Second-Hand Finds and she was kind enough to tell us about what it’s like running the page on Instagram. We previously talked with Sarah, the page’s owner, about a year back. She then told Bored Panda that her love for thrifting began when she was little. “When I grew up, I started to go with my dad to Goodwill and flea markets. My father used to buy things to resell them and for our house as well," she said previously.
Now Sarah says that not much has changed. She still runs the Instagram page by herself. The page currently has 19,700 dedicated followers on Instagram. There’s also a Facebook group that’s associated with the page as well that has over 152,000 members. It’s for thrifting enthusiasts to post odd and unusual pieces they come across while visiting yard sales, estate sales, antique stores, and so on.

Seems like something a chicken would say inorder to keep the truth away from us... It's c**k propaganda
I read recently that chickens really prefer to stick close to their coop/safe place, so it just occurred to me that maybe because of that, it's a bit weird when a chicken crosses a road and maybe that's how this whole thing got started? Just people saying "why did the chicken cross the road?" and since no one can really know, people would just respond "to get to the other side?" until it became a whole thing.
It is probably along the lines of "why is a raven like a writing desk?"

Load More Replies...One of the joys of second-hand shopping is that you can find rare and one-of-a-kind items. Whether it’s clothes, furniture or house decorations, some finds can be rather priceless. Sarah says she loves thrifting because it becomes a lifestyle in the long run. “I like the weird items,” she says. “Anything that’s abnormal or unusual.”
She credits this feature as the reason why second-hand shopping is so popular nowadays. “You can find some really cool, weird and priceless items while thrifting,” Sarah is certain. She says clothes and furniture are her favorites to rummage through, but her page has no bias toward any kind of items. It features all sorts of used items, as long as they’re unique and interesting.
"This Wonderful Secondhand Find Is Courtesy Of Fb Marketplace Here In Missouri. The Lovely Couple I Bought It From Said It Originally Came From A Library In Fort Smith Ar. We Have Named It Dewy And Filled A Single Drawer With Ketchup Packets. Unsure Of What We Will Do With The Other 59 Drawers."
I hope they remembered which drawer the packets are in! I'd be so tempted to move them to another and start a game of hunt the ketchup.
There’s a place for a nameplate on the front of the drawers, so they can make labels and put them in there as a reminder.
Load More Replies...I dream of owning one of these for my jewelry making supplies. "This drawer is red wire. This drawer is white freshwater pearls. This drawer is blue glass round beads. This drawer..."
Load More Replies...I love card catalogues! I would love to have one to store my stitching supplies in at some point.
This is both gorgeous and a really amazing way to freak out your family if you have a good memory. Ignore the space for the labels to be slotted in each drawer. Make them either look or ask you. Tea bags? Drawer 3. Shoe laces? Drawer 37. Batteries? AAA are in 7, AA in 8, C in 9, car batteries are in the garage. I could have a few years of fun with this.
You can make it an advent calendar with some amazing gifts in it. Its fun to do a countdown to your favorite important day!
Paper clips, twisty ties, good batteries, dead batteries, the plastic rings from the milk jugs, spare keys, reading glasses, rubber bands, used corks, the free notepads that realtor keeps dropping off, take-out menus, flashlights, candles, the place cards we only use at Thanksgiving, covid masks, paint brushes, rubber bands, spare scrunchies, bandaids, used zip lock bags, things I don't know what they are but am afraid to throw away because they might be a missing part to something important... OMG I need one of these.
There are also mustard, mayonnaise, salt, and pepper packets. There are the little sauce containers from McDonald's et al. Plasticware, napkins, pet treats, kid treats, birdseed, batteries, pens and pencils, utility knives, string, rubber bands, aluminum foil, plastic wrap, sandwich bags. Good grief! I need one of these.

She runs a YouTube channel Repurposed My Way where she shares various DIY and trash-to-treasure projects. Thrifting and shopping second-hand can be like a little adventure, Shelly says: “Thrifting and searching for second-hand items is almost like a treasure hunt for me. It is thrilling to find a previously loved item and hopefully rescue it, renew it to be re-loved.”

Shelly is passionate about thrifting and repurposing old items – whether they’re bought from a second-hand shop or found at a yard sale, or have just been lying around at home for too long. That’s why she uses the word “re-loved”. She believes that the things we own can have a purpose and deserve attention and to be loved.

Behold The Strawberry Salt And Pepper Shakers! Found At A Local Estate Sale In Torrance Ca
I really love these. They are selling on Etsy and Ebay for about $75.00 USD
Shelly agrees that buying used items is a great way to both get rid of stuff you don’t want, and find some gems you’ve been looking for. “Whether it be clothes, housewares, or home decor, thrifting is helping recycle unwanted items into the hands of people that want it,” she believes.
Buying second-hand also doesn’t hurt your wallet. “Even if it’s to repurpose, update their wardrobe, or help fill up a new home, most of the time the prices can’t be beat,” Shelly admits.

Although it sounds like there’s only positives to thrifting, it’s possible to go overboard. Shelly says there can be such a thing as over-thrifting. “It can be kind of addicting and when that thrill of the new treasure hits, it could easily be a hoarder situation,” Shelly recommends people to be cautious.

Yea. I wouldn't get it, and don't really care about doing it myself, but I still think it was done REALLY well.
Load More Replies...It looks like they were someone's former pet rat, and yes it is fabulous.
Load More Replies...I've seen almost this exact outfit at a burlesque show. Only difference was the person didn't have extra pasties (pretty obvious since humans don't have six nipples), and instead of pasties, it was a glittery bra (well bra-like) top, and the rhinestones were shades of red and gold instead of blue and black. Mostly looked the same though. XD
Quick! Someone send this to Jenny Lawson (blogger and author of Let's Pretend This Never Happened, and Furiously Happy). She loves weird taxidermy stuff.
I IMMEDIATELY thought of her!!! Her books were hysterical and amazing :0)

Load More Replies...Naturally, there’s also the sustainability element. The sheer number of thrift stores and the goods in them are proof that there are enough clothes in the world to dress everybody on the planet. The same might be said about furniture. Manufacturing new goods reportedly generates 100 times more greenhouse gas emissions than refinishing.

It’s been long argued that buying used things is more sustainable and friendlier to our planet. Yet studies begin to show that recycling and reusing only plays a small role in reducing global waste. That’s especially true to the clothing industry.
“We thought a lot of this stuff would be resellable, and it's not,” CEO of ReCircled Scott Kuhlman said in a video conference interview. “It's just not to the level of quality that anybody would agree to buy, at least not at the price point that works in the market.”

No. It's at most, placebo. The gas a person gets is from the fiber.
Load More Replies...Adam Minter, the author of the book Secondhand, told NPR how the sorting process goes on at Goodwill: “[the sorters] go through and they feel the fabric. Is it thin? Does it feel like something that's gonna fall apart after one to five washes?”
That’s why most fast fashion garments cannot actually be reused or repurposed – they were literally not made to last that long. Minter concludes: the best thing each of us can do for the planet is to not buy more stuff.

It looks like even second-hand shopping needs to be done with some caution if you’re making your shopping decisions with ecological and social issues in mind. The clothing industry is by far the worst contributor of waste, even with recycling and reusing in mind.
But if you’re just looking for some funky trinkets to spice up your home, don’t beat yourself up – it’s not as bad. Also, you can always do some eye shopping when scrolling through lists like this. Maybe your itch to thrift will be sated by these spectacular second-hand finds?

My mom made the mistake of buying some wicker furniture once. Our dogs started chewing on it, so she moved it into the old barn that was our playhouse. There was an old (very old) TV (think of those TVS that were in a cabinet, and heavier than tarnation!), Plus a little plastic kitchen set. The wicker furniture made the old barn an even better playhouse.
