The name derives from the Brocken mountain in middle Germany. It's a place that is connected to many myths and is commonly known as the meeting place of witches. Also there is fog on most days of the year, so this phenomenon is very often seen there.

Not that mysterious. El Ojo, almost perfectly circular and it rotates in its lake driven by the flow of water in the river. The rotation of the island is what keeps its shape circular, as the edges are sheared whenever it makes contact with the shoreline of the lake.

I just googled it. It circulates due to the current of the water and the erosion eats away at it gradually making those edges even.

Water current, obviously. You can see the exact same thing in winter, just with ice.

I believe they did figure it out. At least for ice when on one side of the ice you have water that’s moving faster than on the other side causing the ice to rotate

This is actually understandable. When you're in the shower and someone has to use the bathroom. Especially when it's a poo. It is really unpleasant to be in a hot and humid environment when the stinch of feces is in the air. Like being in a šħîț sauna! This prevents those situations. Well done to whomever thought of this! Not sure if it was done to avoid the şħîț sauna I mentioned earlier. But whatever their reason, it was a good one. :-)
