Not that mysterious. El Ojo, almost perfectly circular and it rotates in its lake driven by the flow of water in the river. The rotation of the island is what keeps its shape circular, as the edges are sheared whenever it makes contact with the shoreline of the lake.
I just googled it. It circulates due to the current of the water and the erosion eats away at it gradually making those edges even.
I believe they did figure it out. At least for ice when on one side of the ice you have water that’s moving faster than on the other side causing the ice to rotate
