What’s important is the quality of the food, not what it’s served on. Right? Wrong! Sometimes, when you’re at a fancy restaurant, waiters serve your meal on such weird things and in such strange food containers that you pay more attention to them than your dinner. Those are the times that it’s acceptable to bombard your friends with pictures of your food, instead of eating it.
There’s a whole community of regular people and dedicated foodies who have banded together to form the online group ‘We Want Plates.’ Their mission is all in their name — they want restaurants serving food on actual plates, not on “bits of wood and roof tiles, chips in mugs and drinks in jam jars.” This is an internet community that loathes hipster things and trends, and “crusades” for the right to have their food brought to them on plates, as Mother Nature intended.
Keep scrolling and let us know in the comments what bad designs of food serving you found to be the most amusing. Let us know if you’ve seen something even weirder! Remember to upvote the worst food serving designs and ideas and share them with your friends. And after you’re done, have a look at Bored Panda’s other lists about restaurants that have gone too far with food serving and trying to impress customers too hard. Some of these eateries are beyond saving, don’t you think?

Self-Aware Absurdity? Apple Pastry Desert Served On An Image Of A Plate.... On An iPad
A Meringue Served On A Magnetically Levitated Pillow
It took over 5 minutes for them to get the pillow to hover. I nearly fell asleep.
Bored Panda reached out to Ross McGinnes, the founder of the ‘We Want Plates’ community: “I started the campaign in 2015 after a friend posted a picture of an average-sized steak on Facebook, which had been served to him on a large chopping board. It was captioned, unironically, "That is a big meal!" It wasn't a big meal — he'd fallen for all this style-over-content hipster gastropub nonsense. I searched Twitter for an account which would allow me to vent my spleen with like-minded people, but found nothing. We Want Plates was born. Four years later we have over 150,000 followers on Twitter, and three quarters of a million across all social media platforms.”
McGinnes noted that some restaurants put food on strange things, because they want to try to stand out from the crowd. “My local pub used to do a great Sunday roast: twelve quid, piled high, tasted great and yes, it came on a plate. One weekend they added a quirky offering to the menu: little sandwiches, pies, dainty cakes and mini milkshakes served on a miniature picnic bench. The benches, painted bright pink and yellow, sat on top of tables seating actual grown adults. And what was the first thing these infantilized diners did? It wasn’t try the food — it was whip out their phones and take a picture.”
My Bread Served Inside Roadkill
Cheese Foam That Is Spooned Onto The Back Of Your Hand By The Waiter And Then You Have To Lick It Off
“Over the following months the picnic benches became increasingly popular, coinciding with the specials board becoming progressively smaller, before it eventually disappeared altogether. I sat there one Sunday, watching bench after garish bench emerge from the kitchen like a technicolor carnival of idiocy, before my usual roast arrived. The meat was cold and the potatoes were burnt. It was once their main Sunday trade, but the traditional roast had died an unpalatable death. But that’s OK because they were doing a roaring trade with the benches, right? Sure, until the pub down the road started doing them too. Then the one around the corner. Before you know it, everyone’s doing the same ‘quirky’ thing, except it’s not ‘quirky’ any more because you can’t move for mini picnic benches and now all their roast dinners are rubbish to boot.”
The creator of ‘We Want Plates’ listed how there are plenty of examples of food served on bizarre things, such as beef Wellington on barbed wire, tempura in a shoe, sandwiches in a phone box, and a chutney cupboard. “The worst I've encountered personally was when I was served a piece of cake on a table tennis bat in Barcelona around 2008. It still gives me sleepless nights.”
So These Motherf**** Actually Gave Me A Plate... Upside Down
"I Put Fries In An Enclosed Bowl So They Steam And Get Soggy" - Some Prick Cook
So you shove it all in there and don't give them a plate so they can actually eat it? Just... that's just annoying. At least with some of the other nonsense you don't have to excavate layers of food.
The ‘We Want Plates’ community is very popular in the internet realm. Nearly 95,000 people follow the group on Facebook, another 20,000 on Instagram, and almost 156,000 on Twitter; while the plate-lovers’ subreddit has more than 509,000 members.
Lesley Lassiter from the Nashville Scene wonders whether the only reason restaurants put so much effort in presenting food is that the owners want to get popular online and get more customers. Naturally, this backfires more often than not because the presentation is impractical and just plain bizarre. There’s also the added question of money: do restaurants jack up their prices just because they spent an inordinate amount of cash on random things for serving food on?
The next time you’re out for dinner with your friends at your local artsy restaurant, watch their reactions when everything leaves the kitchen served on twigs, logs, and leaves. If your friends’ eyes light up and they start posting photos online, they might just be a ‘We Want Plates’ enthusiast.

Load More Replies...Do any customers actually appreciate this? To me, this makes it harder to eat, harder to tenjoy the actual meal/recipe, and worst of all impossible to carry on a conversation that doesn't revolve around 'WTF is this place even doing?" I hope this kind of nonsense is prompting warnings in the reviews on Yelp, Zomato etc.
Marina....generation has nothing to do with it....I surveyed my 20 something grandchildren and my 50 year old children....and everyone thought it was ridiculous....that includes my son-in-law and my grandson who are both chefs.....
Load More Replies...Nor does it make it cool. Restaurants try to be cool by doing these things.
Load More Replies...It’s funny to see what is done to stand out and be special. But I cant help thinking, that when you serve food on/in stuff which was never meant to go near food, there must be some issues with different unwanted chemicals seeping out into the food. And some of the tings are very hard to clean. Hmmm.
That was my biggest concern when looking at these.
Load More Replies...I worked in restaurants for years. If the food is not served in a regular plate with regular stainless steel utensils, run! This is because only plates, glasses and silverware are washed regularly, everything else is just wiped - it’s that simple. You don’t want to eat out of anything else anyways because of all the chemicals that are leaked once the surfaces are heated.
Why would anyone serve food that way? Have they never heard of plates?
I wouldn’t touch it unless it’s served to be on a washable plate.
Load More Replies...How these pretentious 'restaurants' even still exist is beyond me. It was maybe something cool and trendy 30 years ago, now it's just every place trying to be more hip than every other place, causing controversy to attract customers. Sad, really. But hey, if people want to throw their money at rubbish then so be it.
It's called most of these restaurants use gimmick c**p like this because the food isn't that good or they want an excuse to charge $40 for a hamburger that would cost you $10 elsewhere. Thanks..but I want good tasting food..not a gimmick.
This is truly some of the dumbest ideas I have ever seen. Your food must be terrible if you have to make a spectacle out of how it is presented. Most of these I would walk out without paying a dime.
No! Just NO! If any restaurant I'm visiting did this, I'd leave. Not ask for a check, just leave. It's not artsy or any other cute label you want to put on it. It's just pure laziness on everyone's part, especially the cook's. I won't even call him or her a chef because they don't deserve the title. I've seen better presentations at greasy spoons where the big guy in the kitchen is covered in food splatters and grease.
This is what restaurants do in order to be able to have crowds in that are not from the neighbourhood. People go to eateries like this for the experience, not for the food and in return for coming up with the most outlandish or shocking ways to serve the food they get to charge a higher price. I do not believe that they have many, or any, repeat customers. With the exception of the restaurant with the dessert on the floating cushions, which is a three-star gourmet restaurant, most of these places are probably not overly concerned with the quality of the food they are serving.
My question is how did they find these restaurants? In the age of the internet most establishments are on yelp or have social media so one would know that this is the types of weird things they do. Its usually normal when someone is ordering to look at other peoples food at different tables, did no one notice others eating out of weird things? I would of left right away, some of these seem unsanitary.
With the exception of the one with the shovel of food, all of these show that the restaurants can't cook a decent meal. They try to hide behind 'kitch ' , and suggest that 'if you don't get it, go to a diner'. Nah... They're making money trying to figure into the 'Instagram worthy ' trend. It's c**p, unsanitary, cheap, flavorless, and sometimes cruel.
I will not go to any of these so called creative restaurant in the first place. Those people eat at that toilet restaurant it's their own fault. I always check the reviews first and we only like our normal restaurant. Creative for me is on foods not on those disgusting thing they put on. I will def file for complain if they serve me on those.
I have only one question after looking at all these pictures. What is the point?
I would refuse to accept 90% of these servings. Either bring it back on a proper plate or I’m leaving.
I don't understand the beer/soda can trend and the iPad trend. Those were the ones that really set me off
Those dolls are the same ones being sold at WIsh etc. at very, very low prices...so I'm doubting the hygiene!
I'm just thinking about the enormous amount of trash this "servings" make
a) some of the portion sizes are saddening b) i feel bad for the waiters who have to bring that s**t out
If someone served me food in a toilet I would leave that's so grosss!! I don't need to be reminded of where the food ends up and how it got there.
That’s what you get when you go expensive or super cheap restaurants.
I was recently in a bar and they served my drink in some ridiculous receptacle that didn't remotely resemble a glass. I asked for a normal glass and the bartender looked at me like I'd just demanded he produce a rainbow from his urethra.
You went or booked, you sat down and ordered, then you tucked in....... Stop the faux outrage.
Restaurants with culinary capability don't need to rely on weird gimmicks in service to entice patrons. I would be disgusted by most of the presentations given here. Except maybe the wine bottle thing from Italy.
Absolutely appalling...feel sick just looking at these meal pics , never mind having to actually eat the meal!!!!! 🤮
Why are people even in these establishments if they don't like them. They surely must advertise these oddities to "bring in trade"; or not.
There is no way these utensils are cleaned properly. How is this lack of hygiene even legal??
A big concern, for me at least, is whether the Props that the food was served on is hygienically clean. Food poisoning from the varnish of the wood block, germs from the pegs of the hanging nachos, bacteria from the serviette the starter was served on, etc.
My first job was as a dishwasher in a diner. Most of these clearly have not taken the task of making them sanitary enough to eat off of into consideration. I later worked as a sous chef and the idea of working to produce something delicious just so that someone could ruin it by serving it in a way that would effect the flavor (i.e., on the back of a hand that was washed with soap or on a porous surface) is horrific.
None of this looks good. I personally would refuse it. My son took his children to a place where the food was served on dustbin lids!!!!! I have been served food on cracked wooden bread boards!!
Thankfully I will never have to worry about this because I can't afford to eat at these ridiculous fancy restaurants. 😆 I actually find it pretty amusing to imagine rich people struggling to eat their ridiculous food.
It makes me wonder about the quality of the actual food. If you need a gimmick, what are you trying to hide? The fact your food actually sucks? Maybe I'm just old-fashioned and incredibly unhip, but soup belongs in a bowl, drinks belong in glasses and a steak belongs on a plate. Being served some dishes (fajitas) in a sizzling cast iron dish is acceptable too. I pity any idiot who tries to serve my meal in a f*****g urinal.
I feel that this is very unsanatary. How are such things cleaned properly? I would refuse this un-service.
Go to an OVERPRICED HIPSTER HOLE, get HIPSTER BULLS*T instead of food. On the upside: FREE WHINE.
I had no idea that this sort of presentation exists. I would simply stand up and walk out, if I were served food in this manner.
Most of these presentations seem calculated to ensure that your food is nice and cold by the time it gets to you.
Love the raviolis on a clothesline and the pizza on hooks. Way to ensure that your food is nice and cold when it gets to your table.
Not a problem for the pizza on hooks, if you look closely there were no tables or chairs either!
Load More Replies...I honestly don't even know what to say...I can't believe fru fru restaurants are serving food like this. Gaaaa, as a certified germaphobe most of these make me cringe. I mean, how do you wash and sanitize an iPad? A hollowed-out stone with a tiny hole? Not even sure the snowboard could be sanitized. And raw eggs? Seriously, so many of these are a severe case of food poisoning just waiting to happen. I would leave those places and drop some nasty reviews online.
Are these places for real? What person in their right minds would consume food served like those examples. Looks foul, very debatable if the things the food is served on have been properly sterilised!
While walking through a restaurant I will often glance at the tables to get an idea how the food looks and how it's served. If I was to see any of these presentations, I would excuse myself to the person leading me to my table and promptly leave their premises. I vote with my wallet.
If ever I own a restaurant, one rule will be implemented - any chef, waiter of other such staff member who places food on anything other than a plate or a bowl will lose their job immediately. NO exceptions. F**k outta here with that hipster weirdo s**t.
Chefs and restaurant owners spend a lot of time creating experiences that are more fun than eating at home. It is not just about the food! Doesn't it give you a lot to talk about if you are served a chocolate dessert in a toilet bowl?
I hope I have better things to discuss than eating chocolate out of the toilet. Frankly, the food, the service and the company are the most important components. If I have to have some kind of gimmick to have discussion, I'm in the wrong company. Food should be appealing, not WTF!

Up voted you, I consider this a legitimate question. And no, it's not just a millennial thing. There were restaurants in the late 70s, early 80s where the chefs were trying to make a statement.
