There’s nothing better than an adorable photo of a kitten curled up sleeping or a picture of a precious puppy getting a bath. But we’ve all seen plenty of these cute pics before, so if you’re in the mood to spice things up and view photos that might make you feel ambivalent, you’ve come to the right place.
Below, you’ll find some of our favorite photos from the Awwwtf subreddit, which is dedicated to sharing content that might make you say “awww” and disturb you all at once. Enjoy scrolling through this adorable and confusing list, and be sure to upvote the pics that leave you feeling all sorts of conflicting emotions!

How is this disturbing? All I see is a little sky puppy cuddling a stuffed bunny in their sleep. That's not disturbing, that's adorable af.
...how exactly, is this supposed to be disturbing? THIS IS ADORABLE
Was Told To Post This Here
Lol, this is great. I love this comment way more than my own. I wish I could give you all my upvotes.
Load More Replies...The Awwwtf subreddit is the perfect place to go if you want to feel mixed emotions. You’ll find adorable photos and videos of animals that leave you slightly disturbed in the end and photos of things you find precious but would be terrified of in real life. According to the group’s About Community, it’s simply “a subreddit that makes you say, 'Aww! Ooh? What the [heck]?!' Then aww again.”
There’s no question that us users of the internet love adorable, wholesome content, and we also can’t seem to get enough of disturbing, disgusting and unsettling content. So why not mix them together for a subreddit that has the best of both worlds? At first glance, it may sound strange to combine things that freak you out and things you find precious. But when we think about how we typically respond to adorable photos and animals, the combination might make a little bit more sense.

That's such a cool photo! I hope the dog didn't end up with the crab stuck to his ( or her)nose

Why is this list creator trying to shame all the cute animals that need more love in their lives?!?
Have you ever had the urge to squeeze your puppy way harder than you know you should or gritted your teeth painfully hard when cuddling with your partner? You may have experienced “cuteness aggression,” something else that may seem confusing at first glance. If something is adorable, the last thing you would want is to hurt it. So why do we have these opposing impulses when confronted with a cuteness overload?
This phenomenon, first described by Yale researchers in 2015, seems to come from our desire to prevent ourselves from being overwhelmed by cute things. When our brains just can’t handle the preciousness of a soft, cuddly puppy or a warm kitten sleeping in our laps, we might want to resort to aggression (although we know we have no intention of actually harming the adorable creatures).
Our Family Cat Squeak, Around 11 Years Old. Went Blind Around 6. Longest Whiskers In The West
The overgrown whiskers are likely a response to blindness to prevent him from bumping into objects. And it remains a cute cat, like all cats.
Nice idea, but whisker length is determined solely by genetic factors (unless they get broken off). Had a couple of blind cats, neither had especially long whiskers.
Load More Replies...Beautiful kitty ♥️ I had a rescued elderly chihuahua that ended up having to have both eyes removed due to glaucoma. Surprisingly , she did extremely well without them and adjusted immediately. She even knew when I would try to secretly get out the nail clippers (she hated them) and somehow knew exactly how close they were to her claws and would dodge them every time lol. I miss her so much ♥️
Nature's fascinating. My best regards to Squeak. Maybe he can't see in an ophtalmological way BUT he's definitely NOT BLIND as you can SEE by his impressing whiskers...
Can I borrow him real quick? I'm pretty sure his eyes unlock this ancient puzzle I've been working on.
The eyes are so amazing a window into the soul. This cat is beautiful.
We can only judge how long these whiskers are if you take a regular (not fisheye) pic of the kitty showing the edges of the whiskers.

This is why i'm definitely going to die while trying to pat a wild animal. I look at the claws.... back at the fluffy face and ears and my brain is still like 'but.....friend shaped'.
Another one that needs my kisses. I will give this one distant mental kisses. 🥰🥰
Just wait a few months... And he seems very dangerous already...
When it comes to what causes the most cuteness aggression, baby animals are at the top of the list, Forbes reports. But the interesting thing about groups like Awwwtf is that the “what the [heck]” aspect of the images seems to cut down on the cuteness overload. These pics are adorable, but they might also be strange, hilarious or slightly terrifying. This combination might be just enough to prevent cuteness aggression, although it depends on your preferences, of course. If you find a photo of a baby wombat to be the cutest thing you’ve ever seen in your life, you might want to pinch its little cheeks. But both Awwwtf and cuteness aggression are beautiful reminders of how complex and confusing our feelings can be as humans. Do I want to kiss it or run from it or squeeze it? I can’t decide!

This Pygmy Hippo Calf That Was Just Born At My Local Zoo
My niece's comment upon seeing the Hippo at our zoo for the first time, which happened to be eating a pile of food as big as the animal itself: "He eats like my Dad!" 🤣
Owwwww that's so cute!! I really don't see the wtf factor in most of these posts.
Dog Actors
Fun fact, if you see a dog in a hollywood film and it's acting all tough, odds are it's tail has been replaced by CGI because it was wagging so much. The dogs love doing their job so much, that when they act all tough on command, they are really, really happy, and wag their tails like crazy.
Poor things. No really good oversight in Hollywood for animals. They are probably really hot.

In the Awwwtf subreddit, there are a few “flairs” that members can tag their posts with, one of which being “Vomit.” This leads me to believe that vomit content is common in the group (although I’m too scared to click on the flair, as I’m emetophobic myself). And while it’s easy to understand why we love adorable photos and videos being shared online, why do we also have a tendency to click on gross things? If you’re a fan of zit-popping videos, I’m looking at you! According to Alexander J. Skolnick, PhD, an assistant psychology professor at Saint Joseph's University, the fear often associated with gross things can actually increase our interest in them.
Oh How Cute. Wait. Whathefak
I saw a picture somewhere of an owner that makes little soft pouches to put their ears in and up on their head when they are babies so they don't step on them or injure them when they are running and jumping around.
that old saying about if you want to know what the daughter will look like when older, look at the mother.
I've actually seen a comic based on that goat where it's exactly that. A demon based on a goat sees a demon based on this type of goat--a pretty little girl and then he sees her mother.

"Sometimes we're disgusted when we see someone with red rashes or welts,” Skolnick told Shape. “We don't want to stand next to them. That disgust keeps us safe from contagious elements." But at the same time, many of us love roller coasters and horror movies because the fear they create can be exciting, and gross content can give us a very similar rush. We can see a disgusting injury or frightening illness through a controlled environment from a safe distance, through a screen, without putting ourselves in any actual danger.

This horse needs a horn to realize its full mythical potential. (edit: spelling)
This makes me sad. Naked foal syndrome (NFS) is an inherited disorder found in the Akhal-Teke breed and is characterized by hairlessness, abnormal teeth development, digestive problems, etc.
The oldest a hairless akhal-teke ever got was 3 years old, with a lot of ver care that is. Their organs just don't develop right.

Skolnick also says it’s perfectly natural for humans to be curious about things we don’t know much about or don’t understand. “We want to know what's gross out there, what's awful out there," he told Shape. He provided the example of fetishes that are out of the ordinary as well. “You don't want to watch the sexual acts, you just want to know what's out there," he explained. And don’t worry about younger generations or people today being depraved because we’re curious about bizarre topics that disturb or disgust us. Psychology professor Clark McCauley, PhD, told Shape that people have wondered about all of these things long before we were around; we just have more access to information now than ever before.

Thankfully, BestLife has a list of some of these animals for us to consult, starting off with the beloved, bright yellow pufferfish. These fish may look innocent, but apparently, they’re incredibly toxic. If you’re thinking about having a pufferfish for dinner, don’t forget that they’re 1,200 times more poisonous than cyanide. Bon appétit!
Not Quite What I Imagined Baby Kangaroos Would Look Like
Speaking of nails, I didn’t know till Peep Peep hit 5weeks how sharp duck claws are, I was clawed up more than any cat I’ve ever had. (She kept crawling up to sleep in my neck/shoulder area even when she was too big)
Load More Replies...During childhood a kangaroo has long front legs. The tiny little one needs them to climb to the nipple in mother´s pouch. From that moment on they don´t grow as fast as the rest of the body. Marsupials can not survive without front legs like other mammals.
Kute but those claws gotta GO! Momma's pouch is going to get bloodied if baby gets angry!

Polar bears are another famous animal that look adorable from afar but would be terrifying to encounter in real life. According to Ed Zebedee, director of the Government of Nunavut's protective services branch, "Polar bears are the only animal that will definitely stalk a human and eat them.” Thankfully, most of us don’t live anywhere near them, but if you ever encounter one for some reason… Good luck!
Raccoons are another animal that the internet loves for their adorable little faces and funny behavior. And while they’re not the most aggressive creatures in the world, they definitely pose a risk to humans due to the many diseases they can carry, such as rabies, mites, tularemia, leptospirosis, toxocariasis, and more. So if you see one, don’t be scared to take a pic, but don’t get close enough to give one a hug!

I love snakes, and I love that my child loves snakes, but there is absolutely no way in hell I'd have a large snake in my house with a child that young. Zoos have strict protocols for trained adults handing big pythons. I get that they are always supervised, but it is impossible to forsee any/all potential triggers for that snake, and a moments lapse could cost a life.
Load More Replies...This is Emi and Cher. Cher is the snake, Emi, the girl. Emi is never left unsupervised with Cher and there are rules and regulations set up between them, such as Emi has learned to be gentle around Cher and is not allowed to feed her until she's 16.
Load More Replies...This picture bothers me a lot. My nephew has quite a few snakes. Once they get to a certain size, about 12 feet, I won't handle them anymore. A snake this size can easily kill an adult if it decides it's uncomfortable and tightens around your neck. Once they coil up it's very difficult to get them uncoiled.
If that snake makes a bad decision, that kid will be dead long before the parents can do anything about it. They're so muscular, I doubt if it would release even if you cut off the head. Looks MAD RISKY! Any herpetologists care to chime in?
False. Pythons do not size up their owners to eat them. https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/snake-measure/

Load More Replies...Don't buy these whiskerless cats. Think about the cruelty first. Don't encourage the breeders. This goes for cats with drop ears like the Scots Fold too. The reason that the ears droop is because the gene that creates cartilage is turned all the way down, i.e. the cat has no cartilage in *any* of its joints. Imagine the pain.
