The ‘Weird Facts’ Instagram project eventually grew so large that its founder decided to branch out and create a trivia learning app. There are over 900 random, interesting, and genuine facts that you can learn and then wow your friends and family over dinner with. Some trivia might sound strange, true, but it’s all been double and triple-checked by ‘Weird Facts.’
Bored Panda has analyzed the topics of media literacy and how we can distinguish between true and false facts in quite a lot of detail before. Last week, I spoke to Steven Wooding, who is a member of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom, who elaborated on what kind of mindset a true, curious, impartial scientist ought to have.
"Scientists have to be curious about how the world works and persistent in their work, as it may take years for it to pay off. Creativity to imagine what might be possible and attention to detail to gain knowledge are also very important," Steven told Bored Panda during an interview.
"We have to be open-minded to new facts and let data guide the way, rather than just what we think. On the other hand, we should also be critical of data. One experiment doesn’t make a fact. A fact comes from experiments that can be repeated and verified many times over."
According to the researcher, the advent of internet newsfeeds and platforms like TikTok and Twitter has shortened our attention spans. As a result, we tend to have a lower tolerance for long-form content that requires more focus and energy from us.
This is wholesome for the father and daughter. But it's sad on so many levels. Not only is this discrimination against single and gay parents, but they are also treating disabled children with so much disregard. I'm happy for the father, but there is so much to ponder about here.
"If you feel you are time-pressured, it’s probably only natural that you don’t want to invest a chunk of time on one article but instead scan the headlines to get lots of little bits of information. I have certainly noticed myself being less likely to read a long article unless it’s something that genuinely interests me," he said that on the one hand, we’re saving time, but on the other hand, we’re staying at a very superficial level of information.
"The negative impact is that we won’t reach a deeper level of understanding of something and end up missing out. This is ironic, as people today rush around trying not to miss out on things," Steven told Bored Panda.
Forget just letting him off the hook - he deserves a goddamn medal for that.
"It’s essential to have a growth mindset and realize that you probably know very little. We can only gain more profound knowledge of the world by investing time in exploring it. This issue goes back to short attention spans, which gives us a broad, but shallow spread of knowledge. Take the time to read a book on a subject, and you are bound to learn more," the expert gave some advice, urging everyone to build their patience for content that isn’t just bite-sized.
Meanwhile, entertainment and pop culture expert Mike Sington from Hollywood explained to me that there’s a broad range of red flags we have to look out for that might indicate that a fact or a source might be unreliable.
"Red flags to watch out for that a claim may be fake: it's outlandish, it's too good to be true, you haven't seen the claim anywhere else, you've never heard the source, the source isn't reputable, you can't find two other sources making the same claim, your gut tells you, ‘this can't be true,'" Mike told shared with Bored Panda.
"The rise of social media has decreased the reliability of information because misinformation can spread so quickly before it can be corrected," the expert said that one basic thing we can do to check the reliability of a fact is… to start off with a simple and humble Google search. We should be on the lookout for additional sourcing and evidence. If we can’t find anything, we should remain skeptical.
"Do this and think before reposting or you may be contributing to the problem. Amplification doesn’t make a claim true or accurate," he said.
an article from oct. 2021 : “physical wounds were healing, but the (post-traumatic stress disorder) is manifesting itself more all the time.”. The most beautiful is his response after accepting shooter's apology : “I am not God to make the decision to kill him or not. That’s not my decision. My decision is to be a better person and to change the world for every kid. I don’t want this to happen to anybody again. It hurts. It hurts. It really hurts. So, I am just going to keep going. That’s it.”
Mike said that sources like Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times can be considered to be trustworthy. "They employ fact-checkers and editors that ensure the information they post is correct. They’re basically doing the research and homework for you. There are literally too many online sources to list that can’t be trusted and should be avoided. Anyone can basically post anything they want… proceed with caution," he told Bored Panda.
"Our attention spans have been reduced to mere seconds at a time because that’s the way information and entertainment is fed to us now. People get tiny bite-sized bits of news by scrolling a Twitter feed, they entertain themselves by scrolling quickly through Instagram and TikTok. It’s creating a habit that doesn’t have to be," he said.
Honesty is the best policy and pay off!!! So thankful for this lady's kindness to help make a change in this mans life. Very wholesome
"The good news is there’s plenty of long-form entertainment and news available, you just have to seek it out. I believe the benefit is worth it. I’ve discovered it improves your ability to focus, it’s more calming, you retain more information, and it gives you a more balanced and nuanced view of the world.”
Dangerous but good for one health as a result. Glad he was okay afterwards.
They sure can let you know what you should be doing!
Load More Replies...I have a weird one now. He does what I ask him to do. Not always ofcourse, but most of the time.
Load More Replies...I have epilepsy and was going through an unstable period which lead to me leaving my husband and into my own place. I had just turned 40 and from out of nowhere the day after moving I got a phone call from the local pet charity asking for me to take in an elderly cat who was 18. Came the same day. Later on I was in the kitchen and she had ignored me but then came in and was trying to pull me into the living room and I couldn't understand why. A while later I woke up on the floor. She knew I was about to have a seizure and tried to warn me but I didn't know her. After that when she started to pull at me I'd go directly to lie down on the bed with cushions on the floor and she would hop up on the bed with me. Every single time she was right, seizure was incoming. She passed away from cancer about 2 years later and I miss her so much. I've woken up on the floor many times now and am covered in bruises constantly. Rip Agnes
I am speaking uninformed by fact checking and deep details here, but I believe there are organizations who train animals (dogs in particular) to signal just like Agnes did - maybe you can get one, too? I did a search for these, and found many explorable results under "get trained epilepsy dogs" and "grants for seizure alert dogs" (I had urls here at first but I had the worst time extracting the personal info out of the text so I edited it to be simply the keyterms I was able to get successful results out of by using) much love and compassion to you
Load More Replies...firmly believe that cats have never forgotten that they were worshipped as gods in the past
Cats do what they want to do. Nothing more. Nothing less. That's why cats are so awesome!
Pigs are the same way. The only difference is, pigs REALLY like food. So they'll do tricks for treats. You'd better have that treat though or you're likely to get a toddler level tantrum. Pigs don't work for free.
Load More Replies...Not entirely true. Ever see a commercial featuring a cat? That cat was trained. They are trained to stand, sit, walk to marks, look at a camera or handler. Heck, there is a guy who found a stray kitten and trained the cat to jump onto his shoulder and stay there, turns out, the guy wanted to take his cat bicycling with him…which they now regularly do
Completely agree @Thomas Ewing. One of my greatest accomplishments is some senior outdoor cats I feed and when they got close enough to eat while I was there, instead of running & coming back for food when coast was clear lol
Load More Replies...Choice. I love it. It means if a cat does understand and act on your command—-a better word is request—-it means they really love you.
Told my cat not to muck about on the road again. Now vet said he might have to have his tail amputated. Bet you wish you’d listened now Boris.
I have two cats, they are trained with the dogs and obey all commands. They even pull a small sledge and enjoy themselves immensely. They bring me mice everyday, which I am not so fond off, though. But two sweethearts. Every animal can be trained with patience and happiness.
Just read this out to one of my cats on my lap and he looked at me like "yes, of course. Your point being...?" And went back to sleep!
I’m actually not surprised at all. For some very strange reason, entirely unknown to me, my cat and I have a strong bond. She will come when she’s called and will follow some requests. (I never consider them commands.) She also sometimes gives ME gentle commands. If I stay up too late, she will come up behind me on the chair, put her paws on my shoulder, and lick my eyes to make them close. If I read my tablet in bed, she will push it out of my hand so that it lands facedown. Then she will resume her position in the window sill. When she came to me, she had already been rehomed three times in her short 14 months of life. The others considered her to be trouble personified. The day she joined me, she cautiously approached me, very gently and gingerly put her paws on my knees, while I carefully looked in any direction but hers. She finally hopped onto my lap, laid her cheek on my chest and looked up at me. I feel as if we have a peer to peer relationship
I am not so sure of this, I think they speak a totally different language. Yes, I have had both dogs and cats my entire life. I love them both, but try this simple experiment. Put food on the floor (toss it there), now point to the food. Most times you will find that the dog will look where you are pointing, while a cat will look at your finger. Neither are smarter, just different languages.
Well, anybody who has ever spend 20 minutes with a cat knows that. As they say, dogs have masters; cats have staff.
I took care of a feral cat colony. Out of all of the kittens over the years I had one that wasn't to far gone to the feral instinct. She weighed 2.3 lbs so I wasn't able to keep her! I named her Annabelle. I never called her by saying kitty. She answers to her name. She never jumped up on anything and by watching my dog whine to go out, she let out a loud yowlllll! She uses the bathroom and comes back to the door to come in. The yard is fenced and she doesn't go outside the parameters!! I have an awesome lil baby!!!
not true. I have six cats that know their names, and obey every command. They know they are loved but that I am boss.and thet show their love for me. Some follow me wherever I go, most people are not close to their cats. When they know they are loved, they want to please you like dogs do.
What studies? I’m a canine behaviorist that trains cats occasionally and training the two animals is very different. Cats are still wild animals. Cats are difficult to study. I’d say that cats understand in the same way many animals other than dogs understand. Dogs actually process sounds the same way we do. Not even monkeys or apes process sound this way. A dog of some breed holds almost every single animal speech record. From largest vocabulary, to expressing complex ideas. The famous labradoodle Bunny has even shown rudimentary understanding of things like the phases of matter! Bunny identifies ice, snow, rain, and the water in her dish as water. There is another dog Chaser, a border collie that more than doubles the primate record for vocabulary with just nouns he knows alone. Chaser has also demonstrated a capacity for complex data inference. Statements like these are extremely misleading. Cats are just like most wild animals.
NOT TRUE ! If your cat is not responsive, then you don't have a close relationship with your cat. If your relationship with your cat is optimal, they will obey commands, and respond to words appropriate to the situation. They should make intense eye contact with you, seek you out, and WANT your attention.I have a PhD. in Psychology, and my dissertation, on cat behavior, was published in an APA Journal.I have never lived without cats, I have 16 cats who all know their name, come running if I call them. compete for my affection, listen to what I say and understand requests such as: Stop, I'm sorry, get down, get out, no, it's OK, get up here, come here, etc. They are attentive, intelligent, and they have a desire to please, like DOGS. They simply are not as emotional as dogs. If your cat has an "attitude", is aloof, doesn't care what you say, your cat is not living up to its potential, and you are not creating a deep relationship, and you AND your cat are "aloof".
"I know what stop scratching the effing furniture means, I just don't care to listen"
Cat owners already know this. One does not adopt a pet cat, one volunteers to be the cat's pet.
dogs want to make you happy, cats are like 'give me a good reason why I should do this.'
Cats cooperate when it suits them. It's called self respect.
Disagree - my cats do obey commands & I don’t have to threaten. I’ve had both of them since they were kittens - I’m a retired nurse & I’m with then constantly. Recent documentary about the mind of a cat shows they can be trained! Not the easiest thing to do but love & dedication prove they are smart & loyal!
Dog! What are you doing, obeying like a slave? At least us cats have dignity!
Did anyone that has spent more than 5 minutes with a cat have to be told this??? Lol
lol This is why i am certain that cats are far smarter than doggies. ""Play dead??" Seriously... i don't think so."
They needed a study to conclude that? Just get a cat. You'll learn even more quite quickly.
The face of this cat is like, "Are you f***ing kidding me? Mind your own business human!"
I think most cat owners know this. I tell my cats....I KNOW you understand what mummy is saying.....
Our cats do, if we give them treats. They know sit, give paw, give other paw, high five, high ten, turn around, lie down, and jump (over your arm).
I have always believed this my cats understand English they just choose to ignore me.
Cats basically r more independant, they see you as a source of what it needs
Im not owning a cat now, unless it is one of the minority that follows it
Our cat doesn't 'obey' very well, but when we say "You'll have to move [from our chair.] he usually will; but when we get up and say "You can have the chair." he'll almost always get into the chair.
Where do they get the money to fund this study? The foundation for researching the obvious. Of course they don't follow them. Cats do not give a s***. They love you as much as dogs do but that doesn't mean they're listening to your s***
Facts!!! Cats used to be worshipped as gods and they have never forgotten!
Amen, but they didn't have to pay anyone to figure that out. LOL. A cat person...
Dogs have owners. Cats have: servants, subordinates, subservients, underlings, those hoping to be granted the privilege of being deigned sufficient to pet them, etc.! 😆😆😆
It’s been a sad day today. One of my cats ran away, and has been gone for a little while now. Buddist was of thinking though, she only gave us good energy. She never cared to listen to our ‘commands ‘ like “ Jubu, please stop meowing! There’s food in the bowl!” If that made you sad, sorry. Have a great day
Sounds about right. I know my cat understands me but flips me off in his head lol
I had the best cat in the entire world and would always lay down when I asked him to. No one believes me when I say he understood me. RIP Jaspy, miss you everyday
Although sometimes they’ll throw you a bone and follow them. Just don’t get used to it!
I love this.. truthfully I'm the same way... In the words of Cardi B "If I see n I ohn speak, that means I ohn f**k wit you"🤣
Of course they understand, but they are smart enough to know, that they don't have to follow the command.
They could have just asked me! I'd have told them as long as my cat said it was okay.
I have believed this for as long as I can remember. Cats are very intelligent creatures and they certainly seem to believe they are extremely entitled! Considering these factors their very natures and personalities makes for a creature who does exactly what it wants 24/7 with the exceptions of motivating factors where the cat obliges a command or request because it knows it is going to receive something it wants in return...still the cat is only doing what IT wants to do and if the trade off at any given time is not attractive or interesting enough ( even if it was so earlier the same day or for consecutive episodes or days in a row) the cat will just look bored and do nothing or move away from you...because he simply doesn't want to do what ever it is you want. It's that simple. You don't own him. He is gracing you with his presence. YOU are privileged to have his company at all.As far as trained cats go...I am just not sure. There are exceptions to just about everything right?
My cat Nieve does this. She understands because sometimes she'll answer but other times she'll either just ignore you or look at you and do it anyway!
They really did not need to undertake expensive scientific studies to determine this fact. Any cat parent could have told them.
Depends on the cat and the relationship with who is giving command. My cat would come when I whistled for him. No treats involved. He trained me too and invented a game we'd play when he was bored.
Whenever I say, "Ya'll want some num-num?" they preceed me to the grub. Then they cast me into outer darkness. Just like my better half.
Some of mine listen, especially when I say "let me up, I have to go pee!".
My cats listen to me. The other cats must just be lazy. I wouldn't be surprised if the other cats got fat.
Sometimes my cats listen, but only when what I want aligns with what they want so..not really. 😞
And they needed to waste money on a study why exactly? Everyone who owns or even knows cats knows this is a fact 🤣🤣🤣
And that is supposed to suprise us?? That is every cat I have ever known or ever had... lol
I disagree my cats all 5 of them sit and wait for instructions from me if I don't give any they tap my face and hands till I give them some. They are quite obididn't and realise it's like a game we play.
Studies have shown that more perceptive people have been onto cats' BS for years.
1.look at his lips 2.IM NOT LISTENING ANYWAAAAAAAAAAAAY (sing reference)
My kitty Snowy follow the same as a dog and responds like a dog maybe my kitty is broken!
Please stop projecting human behavior onto cats and other animals. People are “smug”, cats are not. Cats are maligned by many people because they can’t control them. They chose this photo to make cats look bad. Why is it so hard to be a little more understanding and compassionate toward a little animal who is generally shy, easily frightened and who suffers greatly from human cruelty.
It's very clear to me that my cat listens when he wants to, don't really need a study for that.
They chose this photo to make cats look bad. Cats are not “smug”-people are. People project negative human behavior onto animals all the time. Try showing some compassion for a shy, easily frightened, small animal who only wants to be loved like any other being.
They will if you motivate them properly. They aren't dogs. No, they do not care to please you as alpha. We have 5 cats, three of which have training. Any cat you see in films has some amount of training. Then there's the Amazing Acrocats. Too cool.
That any cat owner could have told without any studies. How else explain why they always follow orders they like?
So basically I’m waiting my time trying to get my cat to stop jumping in the shower.?!
I've had cats my entire life and I can state unequivocably this is totally true!
but they do know when you are feeling down or sick and will usually put extra effort and attention out to you in one way or another 20220116_1...fbafb2.jpg
actually, cats don't speak as much human language as a dog can, but they understand you through body language and tone of voice. At least that's what I know. They do understand you I am just saying they have a different way of understanding us.
DEFINITELY! I live 24/7 (retired) with 2 cats. It is surprising how many words they understand and how their personalities are completely different. One of 'em thinks I exist to serve HIM and the other one, whom I saved as a kitten who was just a bag of bones living on the street does not have that attitude at all. He takes off like a streak of greased lightning at any unexpected loud noise.
My cats always do what I ask. I guess it's because they aren't commands?
My cats Sam and Mr. Mistoffelees down to the letter and give off more attitude then an angered wife
My cat listened to my commands. Her name was precious and when I was 10 I found her abandoned outside as a tiny kitten. My mom and I bottle fed her kitty formula and I had her for 12 years. She was my ESA, and during anxiety attacks she’d lay on my chest and purr while nestled in my neck. This past year we found out she was suffering from a few different diseases and had to be put down. I had always promised her one day we’d get an apartment together. My husband, myself, precious, and our newborn intended to move a year ago but we’re delayed due to Covid. She used to lay on the bed while my newborn slept and watch over him. Sadly she was put down shortly before the move. But her ashes sit in a handmade urn and I still see her sometimes. Maybe I was just blessed with a guardian Angel in the shape of a cat.
Our cats more command us. XD Especially when it involves food. If they are acting hungry or worried i say "show me" and they usually lead me to the food dish. A couple times it's been to the gate when it's open (supposed to keep the dogs out).
It’s pretty easy to get cooperation from most creatures, even cats, by asking politely and saying thank you afterwards.
Interesting fact: Cats domesticated themselves. https://www.freshstep.com/cat-tips/behavior-health/history-of-house-cats/
I have a cat that will follow orders like a dog he was never trained he just does it ( of course when he wants to)! He's the greatest!
There was no need for a study. We who have owned cats already knew that.
Can vouch for that. My cat, the smartest of the dozens of cats I've had, would usually do what I asked of her (which was very little; I mean, she was a cat, right?). But when she wanted to, she'd tune me completely out. "Don't chase that mouse underneath the fridge? I can't heeeeear youuuuu..."
People who live with cats are literally cat behavioural scientists doing field studies every single day
No news in this one. We all know a Master ignores the Servant.
This one really cracked me up. Researchers are always finding out things that the rest of us have known all along. I wish they'd tell us something we don't already know.
Look up "cat talking buttons" on YouTube. You'd be amazed at the level of understanding that they have! (Dog ones are great too, they are sometimes capable of very detailed sentences.)
I have one calico who loves to follow instructions, she will happily come when called and do simple tricks. I have another who is a tortoiseshell, no way will she even listen when I call her for her food.
Cats can also multiply six digit numbers, but they don't care to tell you the answer.
BUT we must do what they tell us to do. If mine sees a white spot where there should be cat food, he means '" FEED ME"
Cats are smarter than we think, we just don't know how smart, because they refuse to participate in any lab experiments.
Sounds about right. The only way to get a cat to do anything is with food.
I read a novel once which opens with a pony getting stuck in the sand at the beach. The owner and her mother end up going "oh well, whatcha gonna do", shrugging and going home, leaving the poor thing to its fate! Then when they come back the next day and find out someone else has rescued the poor animal and taken it away they actually have the gall to be upset about it. I was so infuriated I stopped reading and never finished the book.
At the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Although the US Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth and GPS technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi.This work led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.
Good for you Dad! Glad he recovered. The gun was a little much but...it saved his life.
Yet again, an amazing human. It's just sad that for every Bob Ross, we get 200 eejits.
This was very interesting! Such a good early morning read. Thanks for sharing!
Such beautiful stories give a fresh counter balance to regular news. Thank you :)
You did a great job, Jonas. The best comment was the from the person pointing out that the forest/woods weren't infested with bears and wolves, they lived there! I laughed out so loud I woke my baby up!!! So fact or fiction, it was an absolute good time for this insomniac! Thanks for that!
Hit some highs and lows for me emotionally. Great light read. Full of meaningfulness and life. Love bored panda!!
Gosh. I sure wish there was something called Fact Checking to make sure things you call facts are actually true. I wish there was SOME way to make sure before publishing a list of facts. Sigh. Oh well. Guess we'll all just have to keep assuming everything in print is true, eh?

Critical race theory, quotas for LGBT in different spheres (it's rather hypocritical for the community striving for equality to hire ppl/giveout subsidies based on their sexual orientation and not on their skills/financial situation). As was mentioned in comments, I didn’t need to cry today. Or perhaps 🤔 I did.

I read about how our attentionspan has kind of shortened, and this morning on childrens tv channel I noticed the the "shows" are mostly less than 5 minutes long. Yesterday I was in school with 6 year olds. They were watching a movie for children and the teacher stopped it, and asked did they wanted a break or view the rest. They unanimously asked to view on without any break. It makes me think.
Totally love these types of reads .. I have adhd so little facts and different information totally kept me wanting to see what was the next fact info
The best entries are those that show how easy it is to do good to a fellow human being. Let the lesson not be lost.
This list is cool, but one thing that I've learned is that pictures with said events are not usually telling the whole story or/are completely false.
I find it interesting that the article talks about shortt attention span and shallow understanding of a topic while condensing factoids into the very thing the article criticizes.
