Bored Panda has analyzed the topics of media literacy and how we can distinguish between true and false facts in quite a lot of detail before. Last week, I spoke to Steven Wooding, who is a member of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom, who elaborated on what kind of mindset a true, curious, impartial scientist ought to have.
"Scientists have to be curious about how the world works and persistent in their work, as it may take years for it to pay off. Creativity to imagine what might be possible and attention to detail to gain knowledge are also very important," Steven told Bored Panda during an interview.
She is the example of making meaningful use of wealth, which most wealthy people are too dumb to understand
My grandsons get these books every month and they love them. Dolly is amazing!
My daughter nearly cried when she turned 5 and we told her they would no longer be delivered, she loved them so much. Now, we just do weekly trips to the library :)
Load More Replies...An international treasure as well. She expanded this program to multiple countries.
Load More Replies...She did this all over the world. My nieces in Rotherham, UK got them.
This woman deserves a Presidential Medal of Freedom. More so than that POS limbaugh.
While I personally abhor her music, I harbour great respect for her personal engagement and her social action. Unfortunately too few super-rich are following her example...
Dolly parton is literally the nicest person ever, she just keeps on giving. Her music does not hurt either lol
We have been getting a free book every month for the past few years! This is a great program. Thanks Dolly
I read that she has given away 5 million books so far. What a grand lady she is!
I'm a library assistant and even if I didn't already love Dolly Parton, I'm pretty sure this makes me legally obligated to.
One of the best people in the world, she is just badass, did everything her own way, supported the discriminated of society and took no s**t from anyone. She should be queen of the world.
This is completely true and still functional in 2022. My son started getting his monthly books shortly after birth - you do not even have to request them. He got them for two full years every month. They were diverse books and tracked his age with content. She is a national treasure here.
My little brothers have been using this program. My youngest brother just graduated out of the program. They loved it <3
My son got books from Dolly's foundation he looked forward to his new book every month.
I got a couple books from that program when I was little! I still have them! Dolly truly is one of the kindest people on earth
Dolly you are amazing I don't live in the states but I wish I could get this for my great grandson he is 6 months old and loves when I read to him
apparently, she does it in countries other than the US--see if there's a program in your area just in case...
Load More Replies...Wish I lived in the USA — I'd love to get books every month! Regardless, Dolly Parton is an international treasure. :)
I live in Australia and my daughter received it until 2.5yrs ago.
Load More Replies...CubusResident yes she rich now, she came from nothing and built her wealth herself. Her father couldn't read or write and that why she started this program. She uses her money for good. Bet you still buy from Amazon and never complain about how Jeff Bezos use his wealth on selfish B.S. and treating his employees like disposable drones. Not all "rich" people are the same.
Their website is www. ImaginationLibrary. Org for more information if you want to register your child!
Dolly renamed "Dixie Stampede" to simply "The Stampede" People were offended because of where the meaning of the word "Dixie" came from. This is her response: "There’s such a thing as innocent ignorance, and so many of us are guilty of that," she observes. "When they said 'Dixie' was an offensive word, I thought, 'Well, I don’t want to offend anybody. This is a business. We’ll just call it the Stampede." LOOOOOOOVE HER!
My nephew's benefited from this program. Dolly THANK YOU SO MUCH! Bless you.
I watched her Christmas movies, so from someone who started out with nothing, she doesn't want any kids to feel the same way
You have to live in certain areas in the U.S. It's not available to everyone.
My grandsons get these books!!! We have some really good ones too! Our favorite, a frog in a log! A tongue twister!
Too bad I didn't know her before. my mother was poor too that I did not get books when i'm 5. .Anyway no reading books didn't hinder me to get post graduate scholarship :)
She grew up poor, and I believe that she quietly does more to help the disadvantaged than any more wealthy celebrity in the world!
DOLLY PORTON SHOULD BE A HERO because she gives children free books
Isn't it nice to see a story about a celebrity other than going into rehab!!
😍Awesome way to not only “give-back” but Encourage children to learn how to read!! Awesome Dolly!😘
My family’s grandchildren have received these books until they were aged out. It’s wonderful & children LOVE getting mail!!
This was amazing when I heard about it. The cool part its still going on
But you have to live in particular areas to receive them. So I guess there IS a catch…
We lived in a TN county adjacent to Dolly's hometown. When our children were born, the hospital sent our info to Dolly's Imagination Library. Both of our children received a book in the mail every month from birth to age five. Most were hardback books, all great age-appropriate gifts. THANK YOU, dear Dolly!!
My special needs nieces and nephews get these books.. They love Dolly!
The book in this picture is my favorite fo read the kids when they ask.. I love all the lama books.
Dolly is one helluva great lady-- and what she has done for Tennessee is wonderful.
We should put her in charge of everything. She has done so much kindness with her money
Lol. With two bookworm parents and a bookworm child lack of books is not a problem at my house....lack of bookshelves however.
This is only available to certain children in certain areas, not even the whole U.S or even close.
The city I live in has a program like this. Every month after the kids receive the books in the mail, our mayor does a reading of it and it's broadcast on the small local tv network for the kids to watch and read along.
My daughter received these books and we live in Sydney, Australia. Because of Dolly, my 7.5yr old daughter is reading chapter books aged 10yrs+ & loves reading non-fiction. Thank you Dolly Parton and the Imagination Library for bringing such joy and a close bond.
I've given my great grandsons books. I love books and hope they will grow up reading. I succeeded with one of my four grandchildren.
This is 100% true. I worked with this program at one time. No catch. Just books.
My mom used this program for my siblings for a bit when we were at our most poverty-stricken, and little bookworm me was ecstatic to see the younger kids getting books so we could ALL love reading! My 6 year old self had much purer motivations than now lol
Yes! We get one and it’s such a highlight when it comes!!! This came about because she didn’t get to have books at home as a kid for fear of them being destroyed.
I live in Tennessee and both of my kids benefited from those books! (Llama Llama Red Pajama was their favorite!) They are 17 & 20 now but they still fondly remember me enthusiastically reading it to them every night.<3
We did this with both of my daughters one is 20 now and one is 13 ❤️ They still have some of those books! We live in Murfreesboro, TN and knew about it right after it started and nope no catches or gimmicks! Just free books that are mails to your children every month!
Dolly is a kick-ass example for the rest of the world, teaching how to be kind.
Her father never learned to read. He spent his life in the coal mines. She wants better for future generations.
Reading is the gateway to everything,in a young child's life....to foster that love is to raise an intelligent remarkable adult..truth!
Yes, I know a few children who received them. Not not All rich people throw money on useless things. Thank you Kindly ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I love Miss Dolly and always have. She has always been a For Real person and never a phony.
Bless the queen of country for all the joy that she has brought to us with her beautiful music an children's book1-5 has little readers of today. We love you Dolly
Yes, this is correct. My daughter 5 yo has been given books from Dolly, we live in Australia. It is also used to enhance the bond between the Parent and child. Thank you!!
It takes a lot of courage to say this, but Jolene has NO👏THING👏 on this woman
I could never have enough books as a child. My mother used to take me to the library and I'd have such a fantastic time. I hope today's children continue learn the love of books 📚😊
When my two girls were young, I bought books, as I wanted then to enjoy reading, well, one did become an avid reader, the other not, however, I was a young adult, when finally I began to enjoy reading !!!
From what I hear she herself grew up without, so she knows how much children long for them
And she will send them a video telling them happy birthday and say there names in the video
She refuses the Congressional Medal of Honor.Maybe we could just make her our first official secular Saint.
Low-key jealous I can't get free books as an adult. But love that kids get to grow up with books.
Dolly! Girl!!! YOU are a gift, and we don’t deserve you. Thank you!!!
This one is really good. Its not available in my area yet but I hope it will be soon. My toddler loves books
Dolly Parton is Pure Americana with heart of gold. Bless her golden Heart.
My grandkids received those books until my granddaughter turned 5. They have a 6ft. bookshelf cramped with books. We've been putting some into the free give/take a book box down the street
Yep, I'm signed up for this for my two kids. It's pretty great stuff too.
I cant do it in Oklahoma did it for my first in Tennessee and loved it but its not aloud here!
I don't listen to her music but have such respect for her after learning all the many, many things she does and has done to pay it back, help her fellow humans and share her blessings by taking care of people. I often get really PO'd hearing all the multimillionaire musicians and actors and sports figures who are spoiled, entitled brats and just whine and act badly instead of taking their money and doing what they whine isn't being done. Dolly is so quiet and humble about it all, too....a rare human
This is slightly misleading. You have to be in a place that offers it. It is offered in different countries throughout the world, but it isn't offered in my county in California.
My daughter got these books from infancy to age 5 and we happily donated the ones she grew out of :) it definitely had a hand in developing her vocabulary and comprehension and I'm happy to say she's an excellent reader. Thank you Miss Dolly!
Can we make it until death? People of all ages would benefit from this. I kind of feel like we cut ourselves short sometimes. Like we have to stop doing things at a certain age. Otherwise we are seen as childish. I dislike how some people think that way. We can have fun at any age and there's nothing wrong with that. I just wish we didn't cut things off at a certain age.
This program only applies to those who live in certain select areas of the USA. No, I don't know which areas. I am related to three moms who were turned down for this program because it did not apply to their location. One lives in Northern Indiana, one in central Texas, and one in Southern California.
This is because all the money for the program doesn't come from Dolly. There has to be a local sponsor to pay for the books. The Dollywood Foundation makes the books ridiculously affordable and facilitates the mailing and distribution. But there does need to be a local non-profit footing the bill for the books. My guess is there is no local sponsor where your relatives live. I'm speaking as an administrator for a supporting sponsor.

Load More Replies...Tried to sign up and there is a catch, you have to live in a low income area. Still a cool program though.
That is NOWHERE near true. Perhaps it differs from area to area, but the person that turned us on to the Imagination Library is a Cardiologist, my first cousin. He is FAR from low income and lives in one the most expensive areas in my city. His two girls got them a few years ago until the youngest turned 5. We got them for my daughter as well until 5, and both my hubby and I make over $75k a year. ANY child can get these, as long as they are under 5, in my area, at least....
Load More Replies...The only problem is if you're in a state where available! My grandkids, one in WI and one in AZ, are not so lucky. Where on earth must one live to receive this lovely treasure?
"We have to be open-minded to new facts and let data guide the way, rather than just what we think. On the other hand, we should also be critical of data. One experiment doesn’t make a fact. A fact comes from experiments that can be repeated and verified many times over."
According to the researcher, the advent of internet newsfeeds and platforms like TikTok and Twitter has shortened our attention spans. As a result, we tend to have a lower tolerance for long-form content that requires more focus and energy from us.
This is wholesome for the father and daughter. But it's sad on so many levels. Not only is this discrimination against single and gay parents, but they are also treating disabled children with so much disregard. I'm happy for the father, but there is so much to ponder about here.
"If you feel you are time-pressured, it’s probably only natural that you don’t want to invest a chunk of time on one article but instead scan the headlines to get lots of little bits of information. I have certainly noticed myself being less likely to read a long article unless it’s something that genuinely interests me," he said that on the one hand, we’re saving time, but on the other hand, we’re staying at a very superficial level of information.
"The negative impact is that we won’t reach a deeper level of understanding of something and end up missing out. This is ironic, as people today rush around trying not to miss out on things," Steven told Bored Panda.
Forget just letting him off the hook - he deserves a goddamn medal for that.
"It’s essential to have a growth mindset and realize that you probably know very little. We can only gain more profound knowledge of the world by investing time in exploring it. This issue goes back to short attention spans, which gives us a broad, but shallow spread of knowledge. Take the time to read a book on a subject, and you are bound to learn more," the expert gave some advice, urging everyone to build their patience for content that isn’t just bite-sized.
Meanwhile, entertainment and pop culture expert Mike Sington from Hollywood explained to me that there’s a broad range of red flags we have to look out for that might indicate that a fact or a source might be unreliable.
"Red flags to watch out for that a claim may be fake: it's outlandish, it's too good to be true, you haven't seen the claim anywhere else, you've never heard the source, the source isn't reputable, you can't find two other sources making the same claim, your gut tells you, ‘this can't be true,'" Mike told shared with Bored Panda.
"The rise of social media has decreased the reliability of information because misinformation can spread so quickly before it can be corrected," the expert said that one basic thing we can do to check the reliability of a fact is… to start off with a simple and humble Google search. We should be on the lookout for additional sourcing and evidence. If we can’t find anything, we should remain skeptical.
"Do this and think before reposting or you may be contributing to the problem. Amplification doesn’t make a claim true or accurate," he said.
an article from oct. 2021 : “physical wounds were healing, but the (post-traumatic stress disorder) is manifesting itself more all the time.”. The most beautiful is his response after accepting shooter's apology : “I am not God to make the decision to kill him or not. That’s not my decision. My decision is to be a better person and to change the world for every kid. I don’t want this to happen to anybody again. It hurts. It hurts. It really hurts. So, I am just going to keep going. That’s it.”
Mike said that sources like Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times can be considered to be trustworthy. "They employ fact-checkers and editors that ensure the information they post is correct. They’re basically doing the research and homework for you. There are literally too many online sources to list that can’t be trusted and should be avoided. Anyone can basically post anything they want… proceed with caution," he told Bored Panda.
"Our attention spans have been reduced to mere seconds at a time because that’s the way information and entertainment is fed to us now. People get tiny bite-sized bits of news by scrolling a Twitter feed, they entertain themselves by scrolling quickly through Instagram and TikTok. It’s creating a habit that doesn’t have to be," he said.
Honesty is the best policy and pay off!!! So thankful for this lady's kindness to help make a change in this mans life. Very wholesome
"The good news is there’s plenty of long-form entertainment and news available, you just have to seek it out. I believe the benefit is worth it. I’ve discovered it improves your ability to focus, it’s more calming, you retain more information, and it gives you a more balanced and nuanced view of the world.”
Dangerous but good for one health as a result. Glad he was okay afterwards.
I read a novel once which opens with a pony getting stuck in the sand at the beach. The owner and her mother end up going "oh well, whatcha gonna do", shrugging and going home, leaving the poor thing to its fate! Then when they come back the next day and find out someone else has rescued the poor animal and taken it away they actually have the gall to be upset about it. I was so infuriated I stopped reading and never finished the book.
At the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Although the US Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth and GPS technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi.This work led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.
Good for you Dad! Glad he recovered. The gun was a little much but...it saved his life.
Yet again, an amazing human. It's just sad that for every Bob Ross, we get 200 eejits.
This was very interesting! Such a good early morning read. Thanks for sharing!
Such beautiful stories give a fresh counter balance to regular news. Thank you :)
You did a great job, Jonas. The best comment was the from the person pointing out that the forest/woods weren't infested with bears and wolves, they lived there! I laughed out so loud I woke my baby up!!! So fact or fiction, it was an absolute good time for this insomniac! Thanks for that!
Hit some highs and lows for me emotionally. Great light read. Full of meaningfulness and life. Love bored panda!!
Gosh. I sure wish there was something called Fact Checking to make sure things you call facts are actually true. I wish there was SOME way to make sure before publishing a list of facts. Sigh. Oh well. Guess we'll all just have to keep assuming everything in print is true, eh?

Reading these a second time, a lot of details seemed likely distorted or just plain BS. The first time, I bought in totally lol!
Thank u very much for including my God Eminem in this twice!!
#24 So... she didn't give the guy $4000 HERSELF but rather asked strangers to make her look good... yeah, great achievement~ 😕 #44 Haha isn't this playboy story depicts what's happening right now? Critical race theory, quotas for LGBT in different spheres (it's rather hypocritical for the community striving for equality to hire ppl/giveout subsidies based on their sexual orientation and not on their skills/financial situation). Being straight isn't cool the media tells us, and if you're white - you're de facto racist (even if you're a kid)~
As was mentioned in comments, I didn’t need to cry today. Or perhaps 🤔 I did.

I read about how our attentionspan has kind of shortened, and this morning on childrens tv channel I noticed the the "shows" are mostly less than 5 minutes long. Yesterday I was in school with 6 year olds. They were watching a movie for children and the teacher stopped it, and asked did they wanted a break or view the rest. They unanimously asked to view on without any break. It makes me think.
Totally love these types of reads .. I have adhd so little facts and different information totally kept me wanting to see what was the next fact info
The best entries are those that show how easy it is to do good to a fellow human being. Let the lesson not be lost.
This list is cool, but one thing that I've learned is that pictures with said events are not usually telling the whole story or/are completely false.
I find it interesting that the article talks about shortt attention span and shallow understanding of a topic while condensing factoids into the very thing the article criticizes.
