The ‘Weird Facts’ Instagram project eventually grew so large that its founder decided to branch out and create a trivia learning app. There are over 900 random, interesting, and genuine facts that you can learn and then wow your friends and family over dinner with. Some trivia might sound strange, true, but it’s all been double and triple-checked by ‘Weird Facts.’

Bored Panda has analyzed the topics of media literacy and how we can distinguish between true and false facts in quite a lot of detail before. Last week, I spoke to Steven Wooding, who is a member of the Institute of Physics in the United Kingdom, who elaborated on what kind of mindset a true, curious, impartial scientist ought to have.

"Scientists have to be curious about how the world works and persistent in their work, as it may take years for it to pay off. Creativity to imagine what might be possible and attention to detail to gain knowledge are also very important," Steven told Bored Panda during an interview.

She is a woman who rose from poverty to multi-millionaire status, and unlike most others in that bracket, she did it through hard work and never walking over others to get there. She has never forgotten where she came from and has spent her life giving back to those who have less than she does. On the whole I really don't like country and western music, but her honesty and kindness even shines through in her work, and I can listen to it anytime.

She really is. When we moved here my daughter got 5 books mailed to her from this program. All for the years she was alive cause she was too old to qualify for the program at that time but they don't want any kid feeling left out. It was awesome.

This is completely true and still functional in 2022. My son started getting his monthly books shortly after birth - you do not even have to request them. He got them for two full years every month. They were diverse books and tracked his age with content. She is a national treasure here.

CubusResident yes she rich now, she came from nothing and built her wealth herself. Her father couldn't read or write and that why she started this program. She uses her money for good. Bet you still buy from Amazon and never complain about how Jeff Bezos use his wealth on selfish B.S. and treating his employees like disposable drones. Not all "rich" people are the same.

Dolly renamed "Dixie Stampede" to simply "The Stampede" People were offended because of where the meaning of the word "Dixie" came from. This is her response: "There’s such a thing as innocent ignorance, and so many of us are guilty of that," she observes. "When they said 'Dixie' was an offensive word, I thought, 'Well, I don’t want to offend anybody. This is a business. We’ll just call it the Stampede." LOOOOOOOVE HER!

I don't listen to her music but have such respect for her after learning all the many, many things she does and has done to pay it back, help her fellow humans and share her blessings by taking care of people. I often get really PO'd hearing all the multimillionaire musicians and actors and sports figures who are spoiled, entitled brats and just whine and act badly instead of taking their money and doing what they whine isn't being done. Dolly is so quiet and humble about it all, too....a rare human

Can we make it until death? People of all ages would benefit from this. I kind of feel like we cut ourselves short sometimes. Like we have to stop doing things at a certain age. Otherwise we are seen as childish. I dislike how some people think that way. We can have fun at any age and there's nothing wrong with that. I just wish we didn't cut things off at a certain age.

This program only applies to those who live in certain select areas of the USA. No, I don't know which areas. I am related to three moms who were turned down for this program because it did not apply to their location. One lives in Northern Indiana, one in central Texas, and one in Southern California.

This is because all the money for the program doesn't come from Dolly. There has to be a local sponsor to pay for the books. The Dollywood Foundation makes the books ridiculously affordable and facilitates the mailing and distribution. But there does need to be a local non-profit footing the bill for the books. My guess is there is no local sponsor where your relatives live. I'm speaking as an administrator for a supporting sponsor.

How about you and those three moms "be the change"? Get together and see if you can find a local sponsor for their areas. Non-profits are frequently looking for great programs to fund, they were only turned away b/c no one in their area has put in the footwork to get someone to sponsor them. Ours was sponsored by our local public library!!

Our local public library was our area's sponsor, you may be able to contact some local non-profits who may assist in becoming a sponsor for the program for the kids in your local area!

That is NOWHERE near true. Perhaps it differs from area to area, but the person that turned us on to the Imagination Library is a Cardiologist, my first cousin. He is FAR from low income and lives in one the most expensive areas in my city. His two girls got them a few years ago until the youngest turned 5. We got them for my daughter as well until 5, and both my hubby and I make over $75k a year. ANY child can get these, as long as they are under 5, in my area, at least....

"We have to be open-minded to new facts and let data guide the way, rather than just what we think. On the other hand, we should also be critical of data. One experiment doesn’t make a fact. A fact comes from experiments that can be repeated and verified many times over."

According to the researcher, the advent of internet newsfeeds and platforms like TikTok and Twitter has shortened our attention spans. As a result, we tend to have a lower tolerance for long-form content that requires more focus and energy from us.

This is wholesome for the father and daughter. But it's sad on so many levels. Not only is this discrimination against single and gay parents, but they are also treating disabled children with so much disregard. I'm happy for the father, but there is so much to ponder about here.

"If you feel you are time-pressured, it’s probably only natural that you don’t want to invest a chunk of time on one article but instead scan the headlines to get lots of little bits of information. I have certainly noticed myself being less likely to read a long article unless it’s something that genuinely interests me," he said that on the one hand, we’re saving time, but on the other hand, we’re staying at a very superficial level of information.

"The negative impact is that we won’t reach a deeper level of understanding of something and end up missing out. This is ironic, as people today rush around trying not to miss out on things," Steven told Bored Panda.

"It’s essential to have a growth mindset and realize that you probably know very little. We can only gain more profound knowledge of the world by investing time in exploring it. This issue goes back to short attention spans, which gives us a broad, but shallow spread of knowledge. Take the time to read a book on a subject, and you are bound to learn more," the expert gave some advice, urging everyone to build their patience for content that isn’t just bite-sized.

Meanwhile, entertainment and pop culture expert Mike Sington from Hollywood explained to me that there’s a broad range of red flags we have to look out for that might indicate that a fact or a source might be unreliable.

"Red flags to watch out for that a claim may be fake: it's outlandish, it's too good to be true, you haven't seen the claim anywhere else, you've never heard the source, the source isn't reputable, you can't find two other sources making the same claim, your gut tells you, ‘this can't be true,'" Mike told shared with Bored Panda.

"The rise of social media has decreased the reliability of information because misinformation can spread so quickly before it can be corrected," the expert said that one basic thing we can do to check the reliability of a fact is… to start off with a simple and humble Google search. We should be on the lookout for additional sourcing and evidence. If we can’t find anything, we should remain skeptical.

"Do this and think before reposting or you may be contributing to the problem. Amplification doesn’t make a claim true or accurate," he said.

an article from oct. 2021 : “physical wounds were healing, but the (post-traumatic stress disorder) is manifesting itself more all the time.”. The most beautiful is his response after accepting shooter's apology : “I am not God to make the decision to kill him or not. That’s not my decision. My decision is to be a better person and to change the world for every kid. I don’t want this to happen to anybody again. It hurts. It hurts. It really hurts. So, I am just going to keep going. That’s it.”

Mike said that sources like Associated Press, Reuters, and The New York Times can be considered to be trustworthy. "They employ fact-checkers and editors that ensure the information they post is correct. They’re basically doing the research and homework for you. There are literally too many online sources to list that can’t be trusted and should be avoided. Anyone can basically post anything they want… proceed with caution," he told Bored Panda.

"Our attention spans have been reduced to mere seconds at a time because that’s the way information and entertainment is fed to us now. People get tiny bite-sized bits of news by scrolling a Twitter feed, they entertain themselves by scrolling quickly through Instagram and TikTok. It’s creating a habit that doesn’t have to be," he said.

I read a novel once which opens with a pony getting stuck in the sand at the beach. The owner and her mother end up going "oh well, whatcha gonna do", shrugging and going home, leaving the poor thing to its fate! Then when they come back the next day and find out someone else has rescued the poor animal and taken it away they actually have the gall to be upset about it. I was so infuriated I stopped reading and never finished the book.

At the beginning of World War II, she and composer George Antheil developed a radio guidance system for Allied torpedoes that used spread spectrum and frequency hopping technology to defeat the threat of jamming by the Axis powers. Although the US Navy did not adopt the technology until the 1960s, the principles of their work are incorporated into Bluetooth and GPS technology and are similar to methods used in legacy versions of CDMA and Wi-Fi.This work led to their induction into the National Inventors Hall of Fame in 2014.

Charlie Brown and Franz Stiegler: The B-17 was heavily damaged and going down, but Brown was able to get it stable again. The german air field commander said that any pilot who shoots at parachutes will be executed, and Stiegler considered the barely flying plane as parachute. He flew so close the the machine that the AA batteries couldn't shoot without hitting Stiegler, and he signaled Brown to land - which he refused. Stiegler decided to escort them out of the hostile air space

Man, imagine being so rich that releasing mosquitoes into an auditorium gets you praise. On a serious note, I love Bill. He's done so much with the Foundation.

Sweet, but ... but they were both bitter and mean persons. Henry Ford expressed he liked how germany was run in the thirties, being an antisemit as well, and Edison ... well, where to begin, where to begin ... has he ever invented anything himself, not just taking credit for what competitors and employees have come up with?

Also the sequel was filmed in the same house as the first movie - the director's house. But it looks different because he used his earnings from the first movie to add an extension and generally spruce the place up.

The thing about the apple hitting him on the head is a myth, however.

There are more Tigers privately owned in the US than there are in their natural habitats.

And if you freeze the bananas first, it will be the same consistancy of a Wendy's Frosty. Soo good with a drop of vanilla.

The school I teach at played another school (we're both state/public schools but the other school always acted like they were better than other state schools) and they beat the pants off us using this move set. (I had not taught my chess kids this move set as I wanted them to develop their own strategies.) The next time we played that school, I had taught them the counter to it, so the next time we won. The next season that school suddenly "didn't have time" to play chess matches anymore.
