Many internet users call Australia the land of the 'NOPE'. But it's so much more than that. Just take a look at the country's subreddit and you'll see what it has to offer.
Physics teachers defending their houses from bushfires? Check. Sexy calendars? Check. Public bike repair stations? You bet. The members of this sub share pictures of pretty much everything that makes Australia the unique patch of land that it is.

Interestingly, Australia is considered the second driest continent after Antarctica. When you look at the busy Sydney harbor or the impressive skyline of metropolitan Melbourne, it seems almost unbelievable that nearly 40% of the continent is uninhabitable.
The lack of rainfall is one of the main reasons why such a huge amount of its landmass is so desolate. The national precipitation for 2020 was 483.4mm (19 inches). For comparison, even California gets about 563mm (22 inches) of rainfall every year.
This arid, uninhabitable part of Australia lies in the middle of the continent (the Outback), away from the coastline. And this is also the reason why more than 80% of the country’s population lives within 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the coast.

Aboriginal Australians first arrived at the Land Down Under from Maritime Southeast Asia sometime between 50,000 and 65,000 years ago. From the rainforests in the north, the deserts in the center, and the sub-Antarctic islands of Tasmania and Bass Strait, they penetrated to all parts of the continent.
In fact, the artistic, musical, and spiritual customs they've created are among the longest surviving such traditions in human history.

The first documented visit to Australia by a European was in 1606. The Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon landed on the western side of Cape York Peninsula and charted about 300 km (186 miles) of coastline.
There are claims of earlier landings by the Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, Arabs, and Romans, but there is little credible documented evidence.

For All The Naysayers Who Think The Rest Of Us Are Paranoid
black widows are harmless as long as you're not their current husband
Nothing wrong with being paranoid. If you're paranoid too often, well you're just paranoid, but if you're not paranoid often enough you're screwed.
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean that they aren't out to get you.
Load More Replies...I would keep my shoes (everything) in plastic boxes with the lid taped shut..
Is anybody else wondering what that spider had to go through in the red room or is it just me?
You’re not paranoid, but I would question the the intelligence of living there.
Same family as a black widow but this is a redback which is Australian. Edit: my mistake, this isn't a redback due to the red marking being on the abdomen.
Load More Replies...I went to walk into my storage closet in my apartment, saw some spider webs, and just had a baaaad feeling about going in. Called my friendly maintenance man, and when he checked, there was a black widow, who’s web completely spanned the width and height of the doorway about 1 1/2 feet in. Hashtag spidey senses.
Don't people turn their shoes upside down or stuff something in them to keep visitors out?
Lol. Theres a shoe company called red back. Although i think that was the joke.
*Never* think that. We've got black widow spiders here. Assume wildlife is sneaking into your shoes. Annywhere you are. Just assume it.
Can you collect'em all? I've heard black widows can fetch a hefty price tag of about $50 each.......as a lot of medical labs use their venom for research into pain medications and such.
I'm in Ohio and I tap out my shoes before I put them on if they've been sitting in the closet. I have had some bad reactions to spider bites. The wolf spiders aren't staying by the lake anymore.
I don't know a whole lot about spiders, but isn't a round black one with a small spot (in back or belly depending on if they're male or female) a venomous spider? Like a very bad one that will leave you in excrutiating pain and possibly huge wounds thet won't heal for weeks? I thought I remembered that from a "what is this bug" group
so....he finished the beer in the shoe and passed out? i mean, naturally....that's a lot of beer for such a low body mass....
There has only been one death from a confirmed spider bite since 1979 in Australia.

I live in Australia. I didn't know we were also the Land of Nope. I like it here. Is that crazy? Hang on. Gotta go. An 8 foot kangaroo just banged her head on the ceiling. Silly bugger... Australia is such a wonderful country, I implore everyone to visit once Covid wraps up
It is an incredible place - my now husband and I travelled from UK and went on a road trip from Sydney to Melbourne in 2016. It is an incredible place, and I have many happy memories I treasure. The blue mountains in particular are very special. I kinda hope not too many people go there to help protect it from the idiots who don't respect the rules/ barriers, etc.
Load More Replies...I'm not frightened of any animals, but the problem is, in Australia, so many of them are dangerous and you just have no idea which ones, so you view all creatures with a good degree of caution.
Seriously, I've been here 50 years and can count on one hand how many dangerous animals and insects I,'ve come across. Only real freak was one huntsman the size of my hand. Had to drive 10kms before I cut it loose. I was actually paranoid it could find it's way back even then.
