Interestingly, Australia is considered the second driest continent after Antarctica. When you look at the busy Sydney harbor or the impressive skyline of metropolitan Melbourne, it seems almost unbelievable that nearly 40% of the continent is uninhabitable.
The lack of rainfall is one of the main reasons why such a huge amount of its landmass is so desolate. The national precipitation for 2020 was 483.4mm (19 inches). For comparison, even California gets about 563mm (22 inches) of rainfall every year.
This arid, uninhabitable part of Australia lies in the middle of the continent (the Outback), away from the coastline. And this is also the reason why more than 80% of the country’s population lives within 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the coast.

The first documented visit to Australia by a European was in 1606. The Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon landed on the western side of Cape York Peninsula and charted about 300 km (186 miles) of coastline.

I live in Australia. I didn't know we were also the Land of Nope. I like it here. Is that crazy? Hang on. Gotta go. An 8 foot kangaroo just banged her head on the ceiling. Silly bugger... I better make her a sandwich and check her pouch for mail. That's how the postal service is working here in lockdown. Roos are immune to Covid.

It is an incredible place - my now husband and I travelled from UK and went on a road trip from Sydney to Melbourne in 2016. It is an incredible place, and I have many happy memories I treasure. The blue mountains in particular are very special. I kinda hope not too many people go there to help protect it from the idiots who don't respect the rules/ barriers, etc.

I'm not frightened of any animals, but the problem is, in Australia, so many of them are dangerous and you just have no idea which ones, so you view all creatures with a good degree of caution.

Seriously, I've been here 50 years and can count on one hand how many dangerous animals and insects I,'ve come across. Only real freak was one huntsman the size of my hand. Had to drive 10kms before I cut it loose. I was actually paranoid it could find it's way back even then.

Libstak, chances are you have come across many dangerous animals and just not noticed. Plenty of snakes and spiders hanging around that are harmless unless you actually step on them, or see them and then freak out.

Australia is literally exiling its own native Australians. They keep them on islands thousands of miles away and refuse to let them return to their homelands. They have buggered up their own environment beyond belief protecting disastrous industries such as cattle rearing and coal mining.

Storm might like to know nz is far more severe in covid lockdown. I'm in full lockdown because covid got in again. They locked down fast enough to stop delta hitting the south island, and it is only in two cities so the lockdown will drop alert levels soon (kids not back at school unless they are kids of essential workers, but takeaways will be available again via drive thru, contactless pick up or delivery too). And do you know what? Our economy is fine, unemployment is low, and I am grateful that we arent at a higher risk of losing our loved ones. That gratitude is mixed with guilt for all of those people worldwide suffering from covid and the people here who have too. Here we have the rule of law not the rule of whoever has the loudest voice or the best weapons. I'm willing to lockdown for others because I have what's known as 'social responsibility'. I'm not a selfish prick. And I'm not a communist 🤷♀️ I don't look at the people you mentioned, the older people, vulnerable people and children and think "Meh, it only affects them, I don't care if they get sick, have long covid or die".

100% this. I live in South Australia where we currently have 0 community transmissible cases. But whilst we aren't in lockdown, we do have some restrictions. Numbers at private gatherings are capped, as well as weddings and funerals etc. Masks are mandatory in most indoor places like shops, salons, buses, medical facilities etc. We also have to sign in everywhere with a QR code to help with contact tracing.
