Many internet users call Australia the land of the 'NOPE'. But it's so much more than that. Just take a look at the country's subreddit and you'll see what it has to offer.
Physics teachers defending their houses from bushfires? Check. Sexy calendars? Check. Public bike repair stations? You bet. The members of this sub share pictures of pretty much everything that makes Australia the unique patch of land that it is.
Tony Abbott, a former politician who served as the Prime Minister of Australia, has said that "Once people come to Australia, they join the team." So since traveling in real life is still tricky, join Bored Panda on a voyage to the biggest Aussie subreddit on the internet.

Interestingly, Australia is considered the second driest continent after Antarctica. When you look at the busy Sydney harbor or the impressive skyline of metropolitan Melbourne, it seems almost unbelievable that nearly 40% of the continent is uninhabitable.
The lack of rainfall is one of the main reasons why such a huge amount of its landmass is so desolate. The national precipitation for 2020 was 483.4mm (19 inches). For comparison, even California gets about 563mm (22 inches) of rainfall every year.
This arid, uninhabitable part of Australia lies in the middle of the continent (the Outback), away from the coastline. And this is also the reason why more than 80% of the country’s population lives within 50 kilometers (31 miles) from the coast.

Our Cat Came Home After Missing In The Fires For 7 Nights. She’s Burnt But Should Live. We Thought Her Lost When The Fire Consumed Most Of Our Property. Best Feeling Ever To Walk Out And See Her Alive
acidic comments about the cat being photographed before going to the vet. The owners obviously care about their cat and are happy and relieved that she's back. No need to assume they are not properly taking care of her.
I know, right? If my cat came back in that state, I'd ring the vets and they'd get her in in an hour or so, but until then I'd be feeding her and calming her down and taking a gazillion photos because I am so excited she's back. Dunno what the other commenters expect - kitty is immediately loaded on some kind of waiting pet ambulance to be rushed off to A&E?
Load More Replies...The poor thing was missing for a week. Obviously, she was hungry and thirsty. It makes sense to at least take care of that before going to the vet.
Can you imagine how busy vets must have been during the wildfires? Disclaimer that I'm in the US, but when my cat got hurt, it took an hour and 10 phone calls to find a clinic that had capacity for emergency care. And that was during normal times without a nationwide ecological catastrophe. There is nothing more gut wrenching than having a vet tell you "don't come here, we don't have room" when your pet is hurt.
True. But the cat's probably pretty pissed about such an unglamourous photo.
Cats always believe they're the prime example of a cat. Cats do not feel shame. Just anger and resentment.
Oh, no, no, no. Cats feel embarrassment. Big time. In my foolish youth, once my then-housemates and I discovered how to tell when a cat is embarrassed, we had to be scolded on many bored evenings, "quit trying to embarrass my cats!" Never anything that would be considered cruelty, at least to a less vain creature like a dog, mind you.
Seriously? In a world dominated by people inferring human emotions to cats' faces, you're picking on me? But aside from the philosophical quandries implied by the notion of self-consciousness, yes, cats can feel at least two of the three following: "a feeling of self-consciousness, shame, or awkwardness." They groom themselves. Anthropomorphism (the real word I learned in my animal behavior class) would be claiming that they're blushing, which would usually be difficult to spot because of fur, or looking downward.
🙀Didn't mean to come across as picking on you😿... y'all (you+all)= multiple people (maybe the general public when online) . It was mostly about the "pissed@ unglamorous" & "Just anger & resentment" comments. And 😈Evil Auto-correct😈 that's incorrect (it refuses to leave my "its" & "yours" alone), especially because my edit-delete dots are missing. (Surprised anyone caught that, I'm guessing you're a real animal person 😺👍)
There are really acerbic people who loves to jump the gun and judge people without looking at the big picture first.
They clearly checked her out for anything urgent and then took care of her immediate needs - food and water - before taking her to a vet. If the drive was going to take more minutes then water was definitely more important and probably food because apart from anything else then they'll be able to tell the vet if she is keeping the food and water down, which is a big clue to internal injuries.
How do people even know it was before the vet, it looks as though its mainly fur singed which is a miracle in itself, maybe instead of judging people that have lost their homes and thought they lost their cat, which for most people is family, be happy for them, and for the cat, that she seems to be in a lot better way than they had feared
Also after the fires I'm sure vets were super easy to find, dumb asses.
You could make a post to raise awareness I would upvote it for sure. From the Reddit thread about this photo: "To all those asking; She has been to the vet and been given a thorough look over and clean up. They had to trim her ears a bit and they will need multiple follow ups but her lungs and eyes are ok, as are her feet and skin. She should make a full recovery. And as a bonus the Bega Vets are treating all fire damaged animals for free as well as giving out food and pet beds. They also had donation last from other places to be able to do that. It’s so great to see the community come together in these dire times. Her name is Angel and she’s my stepdads closest companion. " (EDIT: I'm sorry Friday, I didn't see you had already posted that)
From Reddit: Bozwoggle 1y Update: Micky still has not returned. Angels ears needed another trim but look to be healing ok and her mood is good. More fire danger next few days so tense times ahead. Thanks to everyone for the kind words and support it means allot to my family. To all those asking; She has been to the vet and been given a thorough look over and clean up. It’s so great to see the community come together in these dire times. Her name is Angel and she’s my stepdads closest companion. We had to leave her when the fire descended whilst we where packing to evacuate. The two cats ran off into the bush when the fires came and we couldn’t find them. Edit: she doesn’t roam the bush killing everything. Angel is an an inside cat but ran out into the bush because of the panic of our evacuation from the incoming fire.
Gotta get her calm enough to catch her first, hence the food.
Load More Replies...I'm so happy for you that she is alive & home safe. Sweet little kitty.
Frist things first. She is obviously starving. An unwell cat will not eat.
We had a house fire & our pittie now has PTSD from it. If you burn something on the stove or toaster, she gets a full-on panic attack. :( I can only imagine how this poor kitty must feel...
If you want to TRY to help her, research "Desensitizing Techniques" for dogs. And don't let anyone yell or punish her when she's triggered, it'll only make it worse. But don't baby her too much or she may start "faking it" for attention. (See the book "Your pet isn't sick, he just wants you to think he is".) It can be a very fine line to walk.
Me and my two cats have a system. If i say "emergency" in a panicked voice they come find me and don't resist the carrier. But you can't abuse the word, it's only for emergencies, we practice when there's an earthquake or thunderstorms so they know s**t's about to get real
That's really great! How did you train it? I mean, did you train it apart from real earthquakes or was it something that happened and you got lucky and developed a routine? I think that's a really smart thing to do and if there's any tips on how, I'd love you to share.
Load More Replies...Sometimes completely randomly i get up and sort of act out like "something is wrong let go go go 🙃 emergency, let's go" but in a like whispering yelling voice or i make it normal volume a bit panicky 🙃 like once a month so they don't think it's like some game every day 😸😺
I'm not crying, your crying.. Damn it I am crying.. God Bless that little murder machine. I don't know what I would do if I lost mine..
Does it really matter when the photo was taken? The cat was probably starving, homesick and scared. The people did the right thing, making her feel safe again. Thank the Universe that they have their baby back with them, that is all that matters, not when the pic was taken.
Poor thing! We rescued a cat who had been burned and he is the absolute best.
she must be super hungry and tired. pretty sure vets were called and on their way, perhaps. 100% positive a responsible owner.
I live in California and had friends in Paradise (they're fine, the house...gone). I get nightmares about fire coming to my town and my poor half-blind cat confused and scared fleeing for his life. I feel this picture so f*****g hard. He's in my lap right now purring and getting love, but the fear is still there. Global warming is real. We need to stop sacrificing people's lives because our countries lack the will to do what is necessary.
So glad she's alive and that she's enjoying some din-din. She must have been very scared and hungry!
If the cat has been gone for a week, first comes water and food, then the vet
Yet she is outside on a deck from what it looks like. Not sure about OP
This cat seems to be OK, so I don't know why anyone would be upset that they mentioned this online before going to the vet. For all we know, they have already spoken to the vet and want to feed her before they leave.
Oh gosh, sure hope you got her Vet care... Looking in really bad way.
It is not. This is the feeding the traumatized kitty, perhaps before a vet visit, picture. The vet would have cleaned her off and put salve on her ears
Why Are You Littering?
Aboriginal Australians first arrived at the Land Down Under from Maritime Southeast Asia sometime between 50,000 and 65,000 years ago. From the rainforests in the north, the deserts in the center, and the sub-Antarctic islands of Tasmania and Bass Strait, they penetrated to all parts of the continent.
In fact, the artistic, musical, and spiritual customs they've created are among the longest surviving such traditions in human history.

The first documented visit to Australia by a European was in 1606. The Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon landed on the western side of Cape York Peninsula and charted about 300 km (186 miles) of coastline.
There are claims of earlier landings by the Portuguese, Spanish, Chinese, Arabs, and Romans, but there is little credible documented evidence.

It is an incredible place - my now husband and I travelled from UK and went on a road trip from Sydney to Melbourne in 2016. It is an incredible place, and I have many happy memories I treasure. The blue mountains in particular are very special. I kinda hope not too many people go there to help protect it from the idiots who don't respect the rules/ barriers, etc.

Seriously, I've been here 50 years and can count on one hand how many dangerous animals and insects I,'ve come across. Only real freak was one huntsman the size of my hand. Had to drive 10kms before I cut it loose. I was actually paranoid it could find it's way back even then.

They locked down fast enough to stop delta hitting the south island, and it is only in two cities so the lockdown will drop alert levels soon (kids not back at school unless they are kids of essential workers, but takeaways will be available again via drive thru, contactless pick up or delivery too). And do you know what? Our economy is fine, unemployment is low, and I am grateful that we arent at a higher risk of losing our loved ones. That gratitude is mixed with guilt for all of those people worldwide suffering from covid and the people here who have too. Here we have the rule of law not the rule of whoever has the loudest voice or the best weapons. I'm willing to lockdown for others because I have what's known as 'social responsibility'. 100% this. I live in South Australia where we currently have 0 community transmissible cases. But whilst we aren't in lockdown, we do have some restrictions. Numbers at private gatherings are capped, as well as weddings and funerals etc. Masks are mandatory in most indoor places like shops, salons, buses, medical facilities etc. We also have to sign in everywhere with a QR code to help with contact tracing.
