“[Am I The Jerk] For Not Wearing The Wedding Dress My Stepsister Handmade For Me?”

Most would probably agree that supporting your family members is important. But if whatever they’re trying to do is really not going well for them, where do we draw the line between staying supportive and telling them how it really is?

As one Redditor recently shared, sometimes, this type of dilemma may not have a solution where no one ends up being hurt. When her fashion graduate stepsister offered to make her wedding dress, the woman was happy to give it a shot. The stepsisters agreed on a design, but a month before the ceremony, the bride received her wedding dress that looked nothing like it was supposed to be, so she refused to wear it, causing family drama. Scroll down to learn about it all!

Supporting family is important, but sugarcoating a situation to the point where they lose the opportunity to learn from their mistakes is more harmful than good

She told her stepsister that she was willing to pay for her work but wouldn’t wear the dress, which left her and her parents unhappy

The parents and the stepsister left the wedding an hour into the reception and called the woman the next day to tell her off, refusing to listen to reason

The OP and her husband got married a couple of weeks ago and paid for most of it themselves. The few things they didn’t pay for were covered by her father, who had a girlfriend of two years, who, for this story, will be referred to as Stella.

That said girlfriend has a daughter of her own, who we will call Zoey. Being a few years younger than the poster, Zoey was a fashion design student nearing her graduation.

She wanted to get into the wedding dress industry and, as a start, offered to design and make a dress for her stepsister’s ceremony. Since the OP liked some of her previous designs and also saw this as a bonding opportunity, she decided to give it a shot.

After a few meetups to discuss how the dress should look, it became apparent that they had very different styles. Nonetheless, the women eventually agreed on a design they both liked.

However, a month before the wedding, the woman received a dress that was too big and nothing like the design. She then called her stepsister and explained the situation, offering to pay for the work but refusing to wear the dress.

When the wedding day came, Zoey seemed on the verge of tears, and the OP’s father and Stella didn’t look happy either. The company left the wedding an hour into the reception but didn’t hesitate to call the author the next day and tell her off while refusing to listen to anything that she had to say.

The commenters were completely on the OP’s side. They all seemed to agree that as a wedding dress designer, one really needs to learn to listen to their clients and that this occurrence could be a great opportunity for her to learn this lesson if her parents didn’t coddle her.

Protecting their children is something most parents do. But while it may not be easy, it is also essential to let them make mistakes and learn from them.

As Mandie Shean of The Conversation wrote, children should be allowed to experience the outcomes of their actions, as this teaches them the power of their own decisions and the consequences that come with them.

Making mistakes is not a sign of incompetence but rather the main part of the learning process. When children are disciplined for it, instead of doing better, they start avoiding challenges.

At the same time, if parents try to protect their kids from failure, they don’t get to experience the learning part of making mistakes, which, according to studies, leads to more depression and less satisfaction later in life.

But if it is so important, then why do so many people try to shelter their children so much? As Pamela Li of Parenting For Brain explained, parents’ overprotection of their kids has always been a thing because people are instinctively protective of their offspring.

Nevertheless, things like anxiety or panic disorders make people more prone to such behavior, as they’re often more preoccupied with dangers than those who aren’t dealing with these issues. Similarly, if parents suffer from physical disabilities or chronic illnesses, they’re likely to perceive their children as more vulnerable to similar things and try everything to make sure they’re safe.

Another reason could be the massive amount of information that we receive daily, leading parents to perceive the world as more dangerous than it is. If a parent has previously escaped some kind of disaster and, in turn, has developed PTSD, that could further increase the overprotection levels in other areas.

Ultimately, it is usually our fears in life that push us to try to protect children from experiencing the same fears. But the thing is that, sooner or later, there will come a time when one will have to fend for themselves, and being totally unprepared can only make it worse.

Take vaccines as an example. Being exposed to smaller amounts of weakened but harmful organisms helps us develop our own protection instead of having none at all (if we were completely avoiding the virus). And when you look at it, every other negative experience works similarly. After all, it’s better to get softly rejected by your stepsister, learn, and improve than change nothing and keep messing up, not knowing why.

What did you think about this story? How would you have acted in the poster’s place? Tell us all about it below!

The commenters supported the poster, saying that her stepsister should learn to listen to and respect her client’s needs if she wants to be a wedding dress designer

If Zoey wants to work in the fashion industry op is actually doing her a favor by teaching her a valuable lesson. What's going to happen when Zoey gets a paying client and ends up designing their dress however she wants to? That's not going to fly and she can also be sued especially if it's for a dress that needs to meet a certain deadline and the client has proof that they were given no update photos and the dress was not what they had agreed to.

If Zoey’s skin is that thin, she’s never going to survive the fashion industry. Especially in the realm of wedding couture.

Indeed. And I think this is one time it's necessary to be brutally honest (with all of them). Stepsis - "you either failed to listen to my requirements or chose to ignore them. You screwed up the measurements, you didn't provide progress pics. I'm still willing to pay you for your work, but any regular client would not, and you'd be facing scathing reviews on social media." Parents - "You heard what she got wrong. And I was still willing to pay her for her effort and keep this quiet. So how about you STFU and let two adults deal with matters between ourselves."

The OP needs to sit down with her dad one-on-one and have a conversation on this. Unless he is a sitcom stereotype of a clueless male, there is no way he can't understand why a woman's wedding dress is important to her. So he is choosing a side because he doesnt want to p**s off his gf, and alienating his daughter. Is that really what he wants? If thats the choice he wants to make, he should own it.

Why bother? The father has clearly made his choice - the woman he is f*****g and her mentally deficient daughter. There’s no point in meeting him unless it’s for the OP’s own benefit. Let him stew and fume, let the moron dressmaker fail in her chosen life, let the stepmother wonder why her darling daughter is such a dismal failure; but most of all let them do so from a goodly distance that doesn’t impact your own life.

The little devil on my shoulder is saying it’s possible Zoey did it on purpose to make OP look bad—-either by refusing to wear the dress, or by wearing it and looking ridiculous. Typical jealous stepsister cattiness and petty b******t. Taking OP’s measurements and still making the dress 3 sizes too big? That’s Zoey passive-aggressively saying OP is fat, just because she’s maybe a couple sizes bigger. Wrong color and a style that totally doesn’t suit OP, but does suit Zoey? That’s a big hint that Zoey is jealous that her new stepsister, OP, is getting married—-and therefore getting all the attention—-and she isn’t. Zoey is a brat, her mother is a Karen, and OP’s father is just trying to get laid, so is pacifying his new sex partner and her spawn so she won’t leave.

FFS, it’s your wedding! You get to wear what you feel great in, not some amateur effort by a kid. How dare your dad/stepmom have a go at you - why should you sacrifice your happiness to keep Zoe in line.

hard one, but I think, especially with it being too big, she had legitimate reasons to not wear it. I hope she found a dress she loved, in the last month before her wedding. If this dress was free, then the dad didn't pay for it so he shouldn't be having anything to do with the dress situation, other than not wanting hard feelings in the family

I sometimes work freelance. I might have ideas on what I think is best, but you give the client what they ask for, if that's what they're paying you for. That is the only way to stay in business. If you don't want to do what the client wants, you refuse the project. I've done it, because I don't want my name on a dumpster fire. But this isn't the case here. Either Zoey is so arrogant she thought that she knew better than the bride what she wanted and really thought OP would love the dress, or she screwed up deliberately so she could play the victim and drive a wedge between OP and her father. Considering it was three sizes too big, I suspect the latter. Someone's wedding is not the place for any budding craftsperson to dip their toes in the water. Zoey should be designing and making some sample gowns to build a portfolio before she takes on actual clients.

NTA. I don't believe that Zoey's fashion faux pas was accidental; I DO believe that Zoey, encouraged by her mother, deliberately designed that dress to humiliate OP in front of everyone. They were pìssed because OP didn't take the bait, and the worthless sperm donor backed them up. On top of that, he called her THE DAY AFTER THE WEDDING to gripe about the dress not being worn, while not listening to what she had to say. OP should definitely go LC with him, and NC with his shrewish GF and her brat. Perhaps an extended radio silence will kick his brain into gear. If Zoey expects to get anywhere in the fashion world, she had better start listening to her clients. Word of mouth may be the best advertisement, but it can also be the kiss of death for someone with an ego problem. Or, as my dad used to say, "A hard head makes a soft behind."

I think Zoey thought she knew better than the bride and was going to surprise the bride with a style she didn't think she wanted, but thought that when the bride saw it she'd be thrilled with it. That she'd get lots of praise for such a stylish dress. That's why she didn't give updates, because it was supposed to be a Surprise. She's disappointed that her fashion designer daydream didn't come true. This was very much about her and not about filling a clients needs. The bride is totally NTA and was generous to even offer to still pay for the dress at all. Technically she is in the right and didn't have to accept a product that wasn't what she agreed upon.

Personally, I would have gone on the offensive, in the sense that I would have told Zoey that she forced me to buy a different dress because she didn't do what she promised to do and she failed me. OP has absolutely nothing to feel guilty about. The case is very clear: Zoey didn't do what she agreed on.
