We Spent Winter In New Zealand Photographing The Incredible Night Sky

We are Jake and Jo – astrophotographers based in Queenstown, NZ who spent this last Winter photographing the night sky in some of New Zealand’s most beautiful locations. We are passionate about shooting the stars and often stay out till dawn in freezing temperatures to make the most of a clear night.

On our adventures we have managed to capture meteors, the Aurora Australis, zodiacal light, air glow, satellites, shooting stars and of course the milky way. We are constantly trying to find new locations and planning our next adventure – we never thought that we could become obsessed with chasing the stars!

You can see the Milky Way with the naked eye - you just won't see all the colours like in our photos. The camera can pick up a lot more colour/detail than the naked eye can at night.

Back then people wouldn't think that seeing stars in the sky is anything special. Now a days one of my biggest wishes is to get a picture of the Milky Way because I can never see it.

These photos are awesome in the sense that they were shot at night. These showcase what New Zealand got. :) 1 up!

Amazing! I Love your work. I'm amateur and I've never captured starry nights and I have a humble canon t5i, is it possible for me? or what kind of lens do I need?

Incredible! Do you use any particular software to monitor the position of the Milky Way before you go out and capture?
