The art of photography has been around for over a century now, but the average image you’ll encounter in your day-to-day life is probably taken on a smartphone within the last year or two. So it can be interesting to explore the world before phones and even the internet and see the past through the actual lenses used at the time.
The “Vintage Photo Booth” Facebook page gathers interesting and historical images from before 1990. So get comfortable for your trip to the past, upvote your favorite pictures, and comment your thoughts and experiences below.

They Are The Carter Family Of Toronto, Ontario In 1936. Louise And John William Carter, Immigrants From Barbados, Went On To Have 9 Children Over A 10 Year Period
The oldest child of this couple George Carter went on to become the first Canadian born Black judge in Canada.
Not surprised about the judge thing. The oldest of nine children would be well experienced at conflict resolution.
The cherry on top of their pride in how they look is, for me, their shoes. Every single one of them has shiny shoes.
Load More Replies...The whole family looks well turned out, but respect to mum for looking so "put together" raising that many children in a decade... and there are 3 more to come!
The mother must have been a strong woman! imagine being pregnant like non stop😐.
My great grandmother was a farmer’s wife who had 13. They had a wheat farm back in 1910 that is still in the family today. No modern conveniences there. Garden enough fruit and vegetables and can enough of them for through the winter. And that’s just one of her many tasks.
Load More Replies...Considering Louise did most of the work having the nine children she looks pretty good.
While photography as an art and a practicality would come about later, a device commonly referred to as a camera obscura was used to project “images” onto walls in a darkened room. Han Chinese philosopher Mozi describes the physics behind this phenomenon in roughly the 4th century BCE.
It can be thought of more like a projector, than a camera, creating a temporary image on a flat surface. The only way to preserve or replicate it, would be to manually trace the image, which is why they were commonly used as drawing tools for architects and designers.

I thought the same thing. Another one of these pesky immortals hiding right under our noses?
Load More Replies...I'm glad they found love and had a family in spite of the eugenics movement of their day.
If two little people have a child, there's a quarter chance of a normal sized baby, half a chance of a child with dwarfism, and a quarter chance of a stillborn. A double gene for dwarfism isn't viable.
Clearly they won! Imagine how gut-wrenching it must have been knowing that latter 25% potential combined with the general maternal mortality rates of their times. A fortunate, happy family!

The first image from a camera was created in 1826 by Joseph Nicéphore Niépce, a French inventor. He managed to capture the view from his window, although the process did require eight hours of exposure on pewter coated with bitumen. Nevertheless, he achieved an image that wasn’t just some light on a wall. Over time, inventors would, bit by bit, reduce the time needed to capture something.

Genuine question: is the 'Aboriginal Australians think having your photo taken will steal your soul' thing a myth, an old belief or something from a specific culture?
Not specifically "taking their soul" but we do give warnings when they show pictures of those that have died on tv.... Showing images of, or even naming the dead is deemed taboo...

I love my cats, but they still lick their butt! And this isn’t any ordinary nose ‘boop’, I think he has something in his mouth? Does anyone else see what I see?
Agreed, I even zoomed in. Perhaps a cat treat?

Load More Replies...The first camera that could be effectively manufactured was invented in 1839 by another Frenchman, Alphonse Giroux. His device cost around 400 francs, a solid chunk of change at the time, and would only take between half an hour to an hour to “create” an image. Unfortunately for Alphonse, others took his idea and quickly upgraded it, creating more popular products.

I knew it was Freddie before I read it was Freddie. 🤣
Load More Replies...I read somewhere that someone suggested Freddie got his teeth sorted and he refused ,, something to do with his belief that it would affect his singing voice,, and what a voice.

Ms Nora Washington With Catfish She Caught----With A Cane Pole, No Less----In The Colorado River, Bastrop, Texas 1950's
Our Aunt Alice used to fish in that same river and every year they'd give a huge family fish fry. She caught a ton of gaspergous and for bait she used helgammites. Yes, I was confused for a while, too. Have fun Googling!
Despite the venerable age of some of these cameras, they were still a highly niche product, expensive, unwieldy, and annoying to use. Drawing and painting were considerably easier solutions if you wanted to depict a portrait, plus then you could easily “improve” the image of yourself, which no doubt many rich folk did.
The Old Cincinnati Library, Before It Was Demolished In 1955
I hate seeing old buildings go. It hurts my heart.
Load More Replies...It was. Although it was beautiful, the building was torn down because it was a fire and safety hazard, but the books were preserved and are now in the new Cincinnati Library.
Load More Replies...Talks for a new library building had already begun 30 years earlier when the book collection had started to outgrow the building. Books were stacked beyond reach. Ventilation was poor, and the air was stuffy.
Load More Replies...Renovations frequently cost more than replacement. They didnt just demolish it for sh$ts and giggles.
Because here in the US, there is no appreciation for beautiful old buildings.
As someone who is afraid of heights, this would have been TERRIFING!
La Policemen Disguise Themselves As Women To Catch A Purse-Snatcher In The 1960s
You just know this initiative was made up as a frantic excuse when the sergeant was spotted on a Friday night dressed like this and calling himself Shirley.
The snatcher probably approached from behind. That way they couldn't be recognized in a line up, or so a friend told me.
Load More Replies...Didn't the republicans complain that they were grooming children by cross dressing?
But did it work? And nowadays, men in women's clothing are for some people a bigger threat to society than school shootings...
Note the head scarves, which were still so common in the 1950s and 1960s that a snatcher wouldn't suspect anything.
You had to protect that hairdo! You went to the salon once a week to get it washed, put in curlers under a dryer hood, teased, and sprayed into a big helmet. Then you just gently touched it up throughout the week. My second cousin told me this, she said it was a great relief when she was growing out her layers, she never had to mess with her hair, the stylist did it all.

Load More Replies...She was dying in this photo and didn't know it, insidious cancer slowly creeping around her and eventually robbing the world of a beautiful human being
Still stunning at 60 <3 (she died 3 years later in 1993, of Cancer, only 3 months after her diagnosis. :( may she rest in peace)
Another issue was the need for a specialist to handle the camera and the materials to produce the picture. At best, most people of the time saw cameras as a weird niche machine that made blurry, black-and-white images, which tended to not be particularly durable or strong compared to most alternative visual mediums of the time.

Load More Replies...Upvote for a library. I love libraries; they're like an amazing gift to humanity.
I miss those things. If you couldn’t get to the library, it came to you. This was a time when that’s the way many many children got books to read. We didn’t have bookstores like today and nobody could afford them anyway. A wonderful way to share and give everyone the opportunity to learn and discover the joy of reading.
I filled the book mailbox up at the park and it was wonderful watching the kids flock to it and grab up new books . Until one dad let his kids throw them all over the ground and leave them there
We have them where I live still. If I had a heavy driving licence I would have applied for the job driving one I saw last year.

A major breakthrough was the invention of mass-produced film and 35mm film in particular. Multiple brands and inventors based cameras around this film, allowing for “regular people” to more easily take and process photos. While not dirt cheap, an average working person could buy a camera and supply it with film if they really wanted to.

Soon photographs were no longer a novelty, but a staple, as newspapers began to print images. Just a few decades ago, Polaroid came out with the very first instant image cameras, cutting out the wait period between taking photos and the negatives being developed. While the quality was not amazing, it’s a far cry from the multi-hour waits associated with cameras in a previous era.

It's bad enough to have all the papers. I sure wouldn't be giving someone a ride, as well.
While amateur photographers could easily document anything they could capture, professionals had already learned how to edit and manipulate images. This practice existed long before digital images, photoshop, and filters, going all the way back to the 20th century, when photographers would “insert” their work into paintings or create a “montage” of multiple images.

Despite its age, photography is still considered a new medium, as it still requires an interplay between the human creator and technology. While the photographer can choose how to frame what they take, they can’t manipulate or control the image nearly as much as an artist, painter or sculptor can.

They HAD to stack the new tv on the old ones because the old ones were too dang heavy to move!!
I remember that it around this time when our dad built a TV from scratch. It took him 7 years to do it because us kids kept taking it apart, he said, so he started locking it up in his bedroom. It was around this time that he finished it. It was roughly the size of the bottom TV. We had one of those huge TV/record player cabinets. He took the old TV out and put the one he built in that. By the time he finished it, we had a better TV to watch, so we used the one he built for Nintendo video games. 😂 Since it had such a large screen, we could see everything on it.
I was grateful to be in some of his classes at University of Tennessee. Mr. Lee is a great man and I loved when he showed us his collections like this.

Old School Bike Life Family
Okay is that a little bucket of popcorn and a fly swatter for the birds trying to eat it!!? 😆 (I know it’s not, but now you can’t unsee)
The UK didn't experience the explosion of car culture in the 1920s like the US did with the introduction of inexpensive production-line cars. Another limiting factor was taxation, with 4-wheel vehicles paying much higher licensing fees than 2 and 3 wheeled conveyances. So, in many middle-class families a motorcycle was the family's transport. This particular bike appears to be a single-cylinder machine built in the later 1920s, many companies from BSA through Velocette made these small and inexpensive models which typically offered a whopping 2.5 to 3 hp.
I saw this every day in Lahore ... usually with another child sitting up front on the gas tank. And the womans stole hanging precariously near the drive chain.

Exactly my first thought!!! I'd have to start 3 days before the outting.

Before The Parachute
I saw a TV show on the invention of the parachute. Quite a few lives were lost.
Load More Replies...I was given the privledge of having a flight in a no-engine aircraft once. The one they pull up in the air with a propellplane, but otherwise looks just like a small plane, sans engines. He had given me the parachute, and someone else helped me attach it while he spoke of the lift-of and landing and how safe it all was. Then as he got ready to jump iin the plane, I said "Im not saying i dont trust the safety here and your competence, but I would feel like such an idiot if I go down today, and then die because I never asked wich of these lines to pull ".
This is balloonist Henry de la Vaulx in 1907. The parachute had been invented more than a century earlier. The cushions are in case of a crash of the experimental plane. It's not like the plane at that time would be flying at 20,000 feet, after all.
Violinista Con Perro / Violinist With Dog, Ca 1933, Alfonso Sánchez Portela. Spanish (1902 - 1990)
For context, this is the year that Hitler took power in Germany, Spain began to descend into civil war, Mussolini had fascism well under way in Italy. For people who might be Roma (like a street artist or musician) life was about to become extremely precarious

Actually Brando made admirable use of his fame by drawing attention to several important civil rights causes.

Packaging Olives For A&p (George Skadding. 1949)
They weren't very popular but we had one or two still in late 90's. They bought two chains in my area which were prevalent in the early 2000's that slowly started fading and then all closed by around 2012-15; a&p filed bankruptcy. I may be a little off with timing but for reference, I live in NY and they had owned Pathmark and Walbaums and probably some others. We also had Best Market for a little while but they didn't last; dont know if any a&p relation. Basically all three of these supermarkets buildings are now Lidls these days in my area

And it's the lady who puts the little piece of red pepper in the center of the olives. Hard job!
Paying By Check
And today to you need to take out a loan to buy the same.
Load More Replies...Amazing that paying by check could seem so novel…I wonder how many pandas can remember this? (I’m one)
I never did it myself but I remember my parents doing it. I'm 37 (we phased them out a while ago in the UK)

Load More Replies...If i ran out of food just before payday and had no money left i could go to the supermarket and write a check knowing that before it cleared i would have gotten my wages lol. I also had a friend who would go clothes shopping on a friday, pay by check, wear the clothes to go out over the weekend then take the clothes back on the monday and get a refund before the check had cleared.
I still use checks for important things. I pay bills with checks. Instant receipt and proof
Ah, the 1970s, when even the serifs were pretending to be sans.

Vintage is officially now anything before 2003, by definition. Something can be considered vintage if it is between 20 and 99 years old, at least in my antique dealing expertise. My head hurts from it and I'm old

there are so many in your post that struck my heart: The butter bean image; Brando and his cat; the image of the dead father being represented by a suit on a hanger. This is powerful; thank you for sharing!
