If you ever came across a building that sent shivers down your spine and looked like something from a dystopian movie, the chances are you encountered an ‘evil building.’ No, we are not saying it’s possessed or anything, but it probably landed in the most villainous collection of architectural wonders on Reddit.
Welcome to Evil Buildings, a subreddit that celebrates structures, houses and establishments that could easily be home to a super villain or evil corporation. Created in 2016, it now has a whopping 904k members and it’s likely to hit a million some time soon.

I am trying very hard to NOT imagine what you just said💀

Is this a bridge to N Korea? It reminds me of the bridge in a Pierce Brosnan James Bond movie

No wonder there’s a whole subreddit dedicated to evil-looking buildings that has a whopping 904k members. A dystopian architecture has been capturing our imagination for years, especially in movies. Think of Blade Runner’s Tyrell Corporation or Robocop’s Omni Consumer Products, the aesthetics of dystopian capitalism is a staple of many films’ key antagonists.
According to 99percentvisible, what’s fascinating about the evil megacorporation is that its architectural aesthetic has remained virtually unchanged throughout its history: brooding Late Modernist (AKA High-tech or Structural Expressionist) buildings have become a well-worn trope, reaching a peak during the sci-fi smorgasbord of the 80s.

It's a temple door in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India. It's Padmanabhaswamy Temple. It had 6 underground vaults that were found in recent history and only this one remains unopened. $22 billion worth of gold was unearthed from other chambers, but only this one could not be opened. It's said that it's locked with 'naga paasam mantra' spell. Only a sage who can recite the Garuda mantra in proper way is fabled to open it.
When it comes to a specific architectural period, Modernism has always been at the forefront of a sinister movie. Fritz Lang’s Metropolis with its Art Deco styling and Bond villain’s house are great examples. Other architectural periods of evil corporations include Late Modernism as seen in Evil, Inc. which was inspired by architecture between 1960 and 1980.

Enjoyed these. Thanks to all the Pandas who explained what and where these places are.
Should have included Las Vegas, NV, Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center at 888 West Bonneville Ave. Designed by Frank Gehry as he wadded up the plans in the process of throwing away the blueprints. It hurts just to look at it. Gehry-bldg...799ab4.jpg
Ooh...I don't care how "modern" you want to get, that is just horrendous. How can anyone think that is artistic? Just my opinion, though.
Load More Replies...Unfortunately, I do not have a picture that I can post, as I took it in 1977. But, to me, the most "scary" and horrible building is the Lubyanka in Moscow. It sits there, grey, even on sunny days, exuding the horror that the people who were incarcerated there experienced. I don't care how they "clean" it up. It is still drenched in the blood of the people who were tortured and murdered there.
The building itself doesn't look too bad (aside from being squat and ugly) but when you know its back story (e.g., "the Great Purge"), it becomes much more hideous. They should tear that one down.

Most of these are far more preferable than having a bunch of boring rectangles around. There's some stunning architecture here.
I feel like some architects should be locked up in some sort of Matrix, where they can build their ugly, uninhabitable "works" in peace and no one will actually have to look at them or - God forbid - live in or near them.
I actually really loved seeing these. Variety is the spice of life after all and it would be so boring if everything was the same. The architects and everyone who supported the building clearly just had different taste then you/us. If I was on a road trip and saw any of these, I would instantly snap a picture, they are unique and wonderful in their own way.
Load More Replies...Surprised to not see the Fermilab building on this list, but I may have to go checkout the subreddit.
