If you’re an animal lover, chances are you’re a fan of veterinarians too. They keep our pets happy and healthy, and they are our go-to resources when little Spot swallows something she shouldn’t have or Pickles comes home limping on a hurt paw. And while being a vet can be incredibly stressful and challenging, it can also, thankfully, be extremely rewarding.

Below, you'll find some of the most adorable, hilarious and wholesome moments vets have experienced in their clinics that might make you wish you had chosen a career in animal health care, as well as an interview we were lucky enough to receive from Dr. Julie Cappel, the Veterinary Life Coach. Be sure to upvote the pics you find particularly heartwarming, and feel free to share any personal stories in the comments if you are a vet or have ever worked in a veterinarian office. Then, if you’re interested in checking out another Bored Panda article celebrating all of the precious patients vets get to see every day, look no further than right here.

Thats a good point. It’s always cool to see animals show gratitude towards humans that have helped them, especially ones like swans, who have clearly escaped from satan’s pond. 😁

Standing up, they can tap you with their beaks between your shoulder blades. I used to go to a lake in Orlando, Florida that had over 50 swans. Once a swan followed me and pecked me on the back to get my attention. He just wanted more of the animal crackers that I had. Trust me, all the people watching had a good laugh when I turned around and jumped sideways. 😂

I sort of remember swans being very territorial and kinda mean..this one must have really been unwell or very domesticated.

My parents have a bunch of animals on their farm (chickens, ducks, geese, sheep) and this one goose my mom was trying to nurse back to health (he had developed bow legs) would do this. He was a very sweet goose, unfortunately passed away recently. Rest in peace, sweet Bo. (Blame my brother for the name)

I can't help it, but Koalas always look kinda artificial to me ... like a plushy or so ... like a toy ... well, and they're cute of course, and should never experience any harm of course ... sadly they do ... sadly, they're not THAT bright - whenever frightened, climbing up the tree even higher is their response to it.

To learn more about what it's really like to be a veterinarian, we reached out to Dr. Julie Cappel, or the Veterinary Life Coach. When it comes to what Dr. Cappel loves most about being a vet, she told Bored Panda that it's the variety of tasks and challenges that she faces every day. "The people may be lovely or terrible, but in all cases they love their pets like family, and that makes our job so rewarding," she shared. "We get to serve the pet owning public in a way that is unmatched in any other profession. The relationship that we form with the pets and their families lasts a lifetime and we share the highs and the lowest lows. Veterinarians are unique and wonderful."

We were also curious if Dr. Cappel has any favorite patients or any particularly fond memories with them. "I love all of my patients - except the ones that try to bite me," she says. "In particular, I love the parrots because they interact in unique ways - they can talk. So sometimes they say funny things or just act out when they hear my voice. One of my parrot patients says, 'I'm scared' when I walk into the room with her. Another says, 'Pet the birdie! Don't eat the birdie'. I also am very fond of all the puppies and kittens. They always bring excitement to our hospital day because they are so cute and happy, and we get to watch them grow up and capture their families' hearts."

We also asked Dr. Cappel if she could share any funny stories from working in her clinic. "There are so many," she told Bored Panda. "I had a client show me her knee surgery scar by dropping her pants in the waiting room. I had a gentleman come in with pet sugar gliders that he released in the room and they were jumping and gliding all over our heads, in and out of our pockets, terrorizing the veterinary technician. There have been many pets left on our doorstep over the years, some with notes attached asking us to find them a home."

We then asked Dr. Cappel what she thinks the most important qualities of a wonderful vet are. "I think all veterinarians are great and uniquely special," she shared. "It takes a special kind of person to take on the responsibilities that veterinary medicine brings and also keep their sense of humor and curiosity."

I hate that these breeds (and several others) have such a stigma around them to the extent that you can’t even rent an apartment if you have one. Each dog has it’s own personality - just like people

I strongly believe that behavioral issues with dogs are caused by the owner and not by the dog. For example, my in-laws have a pit and she is honestly the sweetest dog I have ever had the pleasure of meeting (maybe second sweetest because my ex had a Great Dane that I loved so much that I think he was the reason I stayed with that ex for longer than I should have.) I also think there is something to be said about small breeds being aggressive because of their size, but again I also think that owners of small dogs are less inclined to train them well so that still really falls on the owner.

I hope the OP reads this :: Some cats suffer from chronic constipation. This type of belly can be constipation, too. A lot of this is due to the (crappy) dry food they are given and also not enough liquids and also age. Make SURE your cat is pooping every day. Every day! if they don't poop in 3 days, you have a problem. It can be $$$ and also cost your cat its life. Try to feed them mostly good, canned food if you can afford it. If not, try to add a big spoonful of it a day to your cat's diet at least to get moisture in them. Cats don't drink a lot of water, but you can soak dry food in it (don't let it get moldy) Give them licks of butter, canned tuna fish water, a lick or 3 of coconut milk. your vet can give them Lactulose which is an oily sugar that keeps them going. I heard the "your cat is fat" stuff for years until he almost died from impacted bowels (the vet didn't believe me when I said he doesn't eat that much) So, please watch..pooping is good :)

"There is so much pressure put on us from the pet owning public, and our pay scale is much below that of our human medical counterparts," Dr. Cappel added. "We also are experiencing a severe shortage of veterinarians and technicians, which adds to the daily pressure and subtracts from our work/life balance. In order to be an excellent and healthy veterinarian, someone has to have a solid appreciation for themselves and have the ability to set boundaries in order to not allow the 'negative' clients bring them down. Veterinarians also need to design a life outside of veterinary medicine that includes strong family and friends, and mental health support."

Big. Very big! I have a 2 year old boy and he's abt 22lbs (which isn't even slightly overweight for the breed .) I read somewhere that they can keep growing until they're around 4-5 years old. For comparison, IIRC most cats only grow until about 2yo and max out at about 10lbs

I worked as a vet assistant for 15 years. While you are correct that sometimes cats purr when they're stressed, they're much more likely not to purr. In this case, that's just a happy kitten! A lot of babies, especially male orange tabbies, are happy being touched by humans and haven't developed a fear of the vet yet. 😸

Cat Fact: Cats indeed purr when stressed because purring calms them. It’s a self-soothing mechanism. Purring = feel good, so let’s try purring to induce feel good.

You are correct. I worked as a vet assistant for 15 years, and some cats, especially kittens, are actually happy to be there though. The super-friendly ones enjoy the attention. 😸

Another trick we use to stop the happy kitties from purring is to run water in the sink. It's just enough to stop the purring but not scare them. Then after listening to their heartbeats, we turn the water off and the purring begins! 😸

My cat is king of the vet's office. He goes into the office in his carrier, comes out in the examination room, and immediately takes over the whole place. He leaps onto the table on his own, goes from there to the counter with the computer & sink, explores that (including walking behind the monitor, which risks knocking it off the counter, but he deftly avoids doing that - he has skills), and explores every nook & cranny of the room. Vet comes in, cat tolerates all his attention, then goes back to exploring. Never an ounce of fear - he just acts like he owns the place!

Cats purr at a vibration that promotes healing. I wouldn't be surprised if they knew this since they climb on their sick people often and purr, so seeking out sick animals and purring would be the same.

First, my 2 yr old 80 lb Lab and my 3 yr old 15 lb Orange Siberian Tabby are the best of friends. They play together (mostly the cat with the dog’s head 😆), groom each other, snuggle, and sleep on the same bed together. Second, cats - well, some cats - can sense when someone is sad or not feeling well, just like some dogs do. The best way they know to comfort them is to snuggle them. Not all cats are the self-centered, egotistical jerks they’re made out to be.

As Dr. Cappel noted, being a veterinarian is not easy. Just becoming one in the first place is often a long and arduous process. In the United States, for example, there are only 32 veterinary schools, and within each program, there are a limited number of spots available. Applicants have to compete against aspiring vets from all over the country to be accepted into these extremely competitive programs, and once they’ve been admitted, the challenges have just begun.

Similar to medical school, veterinary school requires a vast knowledge of math and science, but many people agree that veterinary school is even harder than medical school. Not because the work is less strenuous in medical school, both paths are comparable, but vet schools are even more selective and competitive than medical schools. And for vets who aim to earn a bachelor’s degree before applying for veterinary school, it takes about eight years to complete their education. This career path is certainly not for the faint of heart.

I used to risk asthma attacks to pet dogs. Now asthma much better controlled and I had 4+ years of allergy shots. Went more frequently and longer than most allergist do, but it worked so well that I now have a small dog who sleeps with me! Some dogs still cause sniffles and itches, but mostly only dogs with oiler coats, like labs. It doesn't work for everyone, but if you haven't tried allergy shots, it's worth a try! I've always loved dogs and now I can snuggle mine and even stick my face in his fur with no issues

Because it is so difficult to become a veterinarian in the first place, it’s only fair that the job comes along with excellent perks. Vets often get to treat some of the most adorable patients you could ever imagine, as this list shows us. But there are plenty of other benefits to being a vet, as St. George’s University breaks down on their blog. For example, vets can have as much variety as they want in their daily routines. “Veterinarians don’t have to choose a specialty,” Dr. Lori Pasternak, co-founder of Helping Hands Affordable Veterinary Surgery & Dental Care, told St. George’s University. “Every day we get to be dermatologists, cardiologists, surgeons, internists, neurologists, ophthalmologists, and more.”

They can also work with a wide array of species if that interests them too. “I work with more than 4,000 animals of 500 different species in my day-to-day practice, which is incredibly exciting and fulfilling,” says Dr. Allison Tuttle, Diplomate of the American College of Zoological Medicine and Vice President of Biological Programs at Mystic Aquarium.

Great job to the people who gave their cat to a vet instead of abandoning them outside. There's no shame if you can't take care of an animal, being able to recognize that and act responsibly is the best thing you can do for the animal.

I agree but sometimes in these cases the owner wasn't going to abandon them, they just couldn't pay the ridiculous fees. It happened to my roommate and it was heartbreaking. I recently had to put my kitten down and I was told if we didn't pay 400 dollars (for 2 shots and the vet saying she had no idea what was wrong with him), we wouldn't be able to take his remains. We paid but I couldn't image having to leave your furbaby there so they can just throw them away. They shouldn't be able to do that. I'm not saying vets are bad or anything but if I was one, I would seriously struggle with that part of the job

Guardian. Some countries have legally started to replace the word "owner" to reflect the that animals are sentient beings entrusted into care of someone who is legally responsible for the their safety and well-being. :)

Being a veterinarian also provides pretty great job security. We all want the best care for our furry, scaly and feathery friends, so when they need medical attention, we want to find the most skilled and most reliable professionals. “As animal care standards continually increase, there is an additional need for veterinarians,” Dr. Tuttle says. And according to the United States Bureau of Labor Statistics, the number of veterinarians in the nation is expected to increase by 18% through 2026. This is great news for our pets as well. The more accessible veterinary care is, the better chance they have of making it through their next injury or illness that might have previously been a death sentence.

The look of "I am a majestic fluff ball and shall be worshiped as such. Bow before me and be rewarded with the honor of petting my glorious mane" is very reminiscent of how my MC cat acts at the vet lol. It also reminded me of something sort of interesting I learned from my vet when I had my giant floof dna tested. I adopted him from a shelter (my cat not the vet lol) and I figured he was probably MC or NFC because he JUST KEPT GROWING at what I thought was an alarming rate. When I talked to the vet about the results, I learned that American and European MCs differ in how their faces look and that American MCs look more "NFC" like because they are likely descendants of the NFC. The European MCs look more like Ron Perlman. 0XQFdcO.jpeg 0XQFdcO.jpeg

Many vets also note how rewarding they find their careers. They are making a real difference in the lives of so many animals and humans, as most pet owners would be completely lost without their beloved animal babies. Lots of vets treat more than just pets though. Wildlife can often benefit from great veterinarians as well, as conservation is at the forefront of many vets' personal priorities. “With a mission to inspire people to care for and protect our ocean planet through conservation, education, and research, Mystic Aquarium is in line with my personal passions and philosophies,” Dr. Tuttle says.

Happy pups deal so well with terrible pain and awfulness. My Rottweiler baby boy died within 3 days because he had such an aggressive bone cancer it ate his bones and me, the vet etc didn’t even realise until the end because he was so happy to b alive. The vet said we couldn’t even have known without a scan, and because there was no symptoms there was no scan until too late. He said: he was such a happy boy, it was the best path for him. God bless these creatures and those who look after them for us 🤍

My cat has held a grudge against her vet ever since her temperature was taken 6 years ago (she was very, very offended by it). They have to sedate my angry furbaby before they can give her shots now cos she gets so tense and bitey with rage that even swaddling doesn't work.

Sounds like my cat. He gets really feral. And I mean REALLY feral at the vets. He bit through a leather glove once. Where did I get my cat from? The same vet. Anyway now I get home visits from a different vet. Less stressful all round

It does help for most cats and kittens, as they feel secure when they're in tight enclosed spaces (it's one reason they like boxes and such so much). There will always be some cats that feel *less* secure when restrained in this manner, but you won't know unless you try. Don't worry about traumatizing her though, it won't trouble her that much.

My dog's picture wound up in some veterinary textbooks. She had a condition called Uterus Unicornis (swear I'm not making that up!), which meant she never developed her internal sex organs. I took her in to be spayed, but the vet opened her up and found no uterus or ovaries or anything else to take out. They called everyone to come look at the little weirdo's internal organs and took lots of pictures. When I picked her up, I signed a release that they could use the pictures for whatever they wanted.

Yeesh, that is NOT proper technique! Although it would be nearly impossible to restraint a bird of that size with lead gloves on, ideally they need to be wearing those, and their hands should definitely NOT be in the picture!

You hold the bird withoud gloves and get leaded soft mats layed over your bare hands. Plus you can minimize the window for the x-ray and just shot chest/tummy of the patient e.g. (the resolution is even to bad if you have a window with that big size).

So there's only 2 ferret vets around me. The reasonably close one is more general but there's one who will see exotics. Anyways, their rooms aren't weasel proof and I brought my entire business in. The only way to examine them is to let them out and grab them one at a time while the others explore. So imagine 17 ferrets going in and out the bottom of cabinets and popping out of the counter top holes for like trash or soap dispensers and into the drawers... It took over an hour to get everyone back 😂

If you can't keep a bird safe and able to fly, don't have a bird! Birds are meant to fly. There's absolutely no valid reason to clip a poor birds healthy wings and cripple it so it can't fly. None. Just don't get a bird if you can't give it a proper home where it can do what's natural for it! Same goes for cats. If you can't live with a cat that has claws, don't get a cat. It's just cruel to cripple animals just to have them.

This looks the person clipped the bird/s wings themselves as they rendered the bird flightless which is incredibly dangerous. They could have also severely hurt the bird. A bird needs a way to escape if they find themselves in a dangerous situation. When done by a professional vet or avian expert, they will cut a very tiny portion of the bird's wing (it will grow back quite fast) that still allows them to fly if they are in a dangerous situation, however, the bird will not be able to fly as high as it used to.

Why was the bird waiting for the bus? Where did the bus suppose to take the bird? Was the bus running late? Was the bird going crazy and rampant because the bus was too late? Was that the reaseon the bird crashed into the window? And, most important, did the bird still catch the bus?

My clinic once treated a young golden eagle that hit an 80-mile-per-hour semi head-on. The bird went through the windshield and landed in the sleeping compartment in back of the cab. Did in the truck and scared the pants off the driver, but the eagle came out with just a broken wing and a little boo-boo on his head. Recovered completely and was released back into the wild.

Could've been worse. At least it was the breath she captured. Otherwise, the vet might've been holding a noxious fart-in-a-bag. Heaven knows how you would even begin to dispose of a toxic dogfart safely.

It'd be worth it just to picture the whole family following the dog around with bags, excitedly anticipating its next fart, with the kids fighting over whose turn it is, who dealt that one, etc.

Maybe they can do a gastro-intestinal exam by letting the dog fart in an elevator, and then have the vet get on at the next floor. At the office building where I used to work I could often tell how well other people ate by what fart odors they left behind (anonymously) in the elevator.

i went to a shelter on some admin stuff in June and decided to just look at the kittens (my 18 year old cat passed in April this year) and a black and white kitten marched up to me and sat with her head against me for a full 5 minutes and now I have another cat.

This would explain why one cat I had did not show this behaviour, among others. She was a rescue from a home where the humans (I use the term loosely) had enjoyed hotboxing with the mother cat, including while she was pregnant, to watch her crazy, drugged antics. Unsurprisingly, the kittens were not well socialized. My girl didn't know basic things like how to groom herself, though once we adopted another rescue she would try to mimic him, licking one paw and rubbing it over one ear, over and over. She didn't even know how to meow, and was nearly always silent, but once in a while I would catch her late at night trying to meow with a very scratchy voice, "practicing" when she thought no one could hear her. She was weird, but so sweet! You are missed, Bastet (aka Bazzy-Boo).

Why is that called 'the cone of shame'? Nothing shameful about it. How about 'the cone of healing'? Years ago, one of my cats was given a soft collar by Cornell Vet School. It extends just as far as the rigid cone, keeps the kitty away from tummy stitches, but is SO much more user friendly. I have used it for for 8 spays, 2 abdominal surgeries 2 ear surgeries (at least....you can imagine its condition!).. Not a stitch pulled and MUCH easier for the kitties to eat and sleep. I wish vets all over would use the softer collars. Patient parents also need to ask for them.

WONDERFUL!! I know that the vet means well with insisting that their tech handle the cat during exams.....and there are probably cats that need the extra hand. But kitties are more comfy with their people.

Poor little guinea pig just doesn't know what's good for him. Great job, vets! Over half of guinea pigs die from the anesthesia alone.

not funny or cute in the slightest. pug genes should be bred out/allowed to die off so future generations of dogs aren't forced to suffer through their entire lives.

I don't understand why people are still breeding pugs. The poor things have so many health issues. It isn't cute. It's cruel.
