I think really young teens should be abstaining. But the problem is they're not smart enough (see: Young teens) to do so. If there was more, non-stigmatised birth control education that would help. And more importantly there needs to be other options for "oops we got pregnant" too.

Easier said than done. Teenagers are not well-known for taking responsible and sage decisions. Hormones, anyone? Personally I don't think every teenager should abstain from sex, many teenagers are mature enough to take that decision for themselves, I was one of them, I wasn't irresponsible, I was probably more mature than many adults to be frank, why shouldn't I have had sex? Teenagers in the US can drive and potentially kill others in a car accident at 16 but they shouldn't have sex no matter what? It doesn't make sense. A responsible teenager will use contraception, of course, but contraception is not infallible, as we all know. And abortions is not only for teenagers, by the way. Let's say an adult woman with heavy disabilities or illness gets accidentally pregnant. The pregnancy could be fatal or at least too much for her condition. Can she abort? Or she should have abstained cause "she should have known better"?

It is only usually the girl that gets left pregnant. The boy doesn't usually face any consequences, unless arrested. He can quite happily go on with his life without burden. The girl will either have an abortion, put the baby up for adoption or be a single mother. So limiting access to safe abortions only really effects women.

I guess I was primarily directing this at the previous comment which didn't specify about teen pregnancies. But in any case, I wasn't trying to give anyone advice, but pointing out something that some people have found effective and is often overlooked.

Unrealistic. Besides, unwanted pregnancies don't just happen to young people. They can happen to married people who don't want children. Should they never have sex or have children they don't want? YOU don't have to have an abortion, it's not for you to decide for others. Plus in countries with better access to education and medical care abortions are increasingly happening early. Before 12 weeks. These are NOT babies being aborted. Unwanted children are by far a worse thing than a terminated pregnancy. Let's not pretend all unwanted children get adopted, that all adopted children end up loved - we need to be far more clear-eyed about what the realities are for many children. There is far too much cruelty and neglect. Do you not see the news? See the murdered babies and children? Those who have lived appalling lives of cruelty? Tell me they were wanted. No. To bring any child into the world that isn't very much wanted is awful. Stop pretending just telling people not to have sex works as well.

I'm not pretending it works just as well, nor do I believe it to be entirely unrealistic. I agree with you, maybe it is unrealistic for some, however for others not so much.. Either way, I wasn't telling anyone to not have sex, I was just stating that it's a reliable way to keep yourself safe

Parents are legally responsible for minor children driving a family car. 16 year olds can be emancipated from their parents if they do so legally. Your example of a parent withholding critical lifesaving treatment is hardly a like in kind comparison. Even in your extreme and unrelated illustration, the parents rights were not ‘taken’ they were overridden and they had full knowledge of the situation.
