@Terra Cotta, You fight to win an argument. There should be no space for this because it doesn't matter what should, it matters what is. Now here on this very site people usually empathise a lot with the poor. But with Covid no that's different with covid it's all about one truth but there have been issues that would have been needed to be addressed. Because if this hadn't been silenced so bad by people like you maybe the government had felt pressured to give masks away for free for the poor faster. But this was not possible because the scientists who did the study were attacked by media for spreading right wing fake news. And then there is the chemicals, that for some individuals might cause more problems than an infection - we don't know and never will, no further research was done. See how I get downvoted here for citing scientific work... so much for following educated people. No you guys are all following a religion, because that's how we call believers who deny science.

The N95 masks can be used over and over, as long as you give them a few days break in a paper bag (to give time for any germs to die) and they remain in good condition. That was the advice professionals were giving, and if people didn't follow that, that's on them. The regular medical masks are not very expensive and come in bulk sizes. Yes, it would have been good if governments had given out more free masks but this has nothing to do with the original topic. And it's your adversarial attitude that is getting you downvoted. There is no need to be so nasty to people on here. The people you are talking to believe in science as much as you do, so why throw out blame and hate?

@ Boredest Disabled Panda Oh suddenly you don't like adversarial attitude? You loved it when it supported your cause. Also you don't believe in science, if you do that you are the most anti science person that exists. You question science, you don't trust it, but you follow the facts. Most people can't do that. And that's ok. But it's not ok if you then claim science or experts for your cause. Because then you believe and that's ok too as long as you acknowledge that your believe not only can be but inevitably will be wrong at times. Masks did cost 1$ a piece here in the beginning because they were in such high demand, for a family with 2 kids going to school that was a lot of money. The N-95s were at 3-7$ a piece. Later they became cheap.

Mathias, your idea of "science" is labeling salt a poison because eating half a cup of it at once can kill you. Technically true, but also so misleading.

@Terra Cotta, what I did is saying that if people eat half a cup of salt of salt you shouldn't ignore their behaviour but acknowledge that it's an issue that has to be dealt with. And then in your communication not only mention the importance of salt but also the negative effects of over consumption. But you are free to cite my words 1:1 and explain where exactly I did say that masks are bad. You'll see I didn't. I said there are investigations that showed there are problems we should look into. At no point did I say they shouldn't be used at all. I believe you have difficulties to see that there are people who don't see this black or white but acknowledge the importance of masks while als criticising that the issues of them are being silenced instead of resolved.

Helen, read again. I DIDN'T agree with his point at all. It was ALWAYS the responsibility of the person wearing the mask to wear it properly.

@Boredest There are always a few of these super intelligent, very smart people who totally do extensive, scientific, peer-reviewed, validated research commenting on posts like these. @Boredest Disabled Panda, ah, suddenly it's individual responsibility. So then what are we talking about? Then the whole covid thing also is just individual responsibility and everything is free to do however they like to handle it. Either you give freedom or you address problems that are. You don't just declare one problem as valid because it suits you and declare another one as not valid because it doesn't fit in your believe system. It's not about what should be, it's about what is. And you have to handle life as it is or you'll run into a brick wall head first at one point.

@Boredest Disabled Panada, you could try to explain your points further, you know going the scientific way. Find reason and logic. As said: I don't understand why people using masks wrong and therefore masks can turn dangerous should not be an issue while at the same time covid is seen as such a huge issue that no compromise should be possible. That's contradictory from my point of view. You obviously see it different, why?

Matthias, you obviously missed my points since I absolutely agree that using masks wrong is a problem. I even stated that. @Boredest Disabled Panda, so you then agree that the first guy is right with his that part of statement. And I think that we both agree that CO2 levels with surgical masks are no issue (N-95 is a different topic and there are regulations on how long it is allowed to have people wear them). So what are we discussing about? Well stomping out of the room after you threw a waterfall of accusations is one way to avoid realisation. If you confuse a non personal fact based disagreement with hostility and a fight you are of course free to do so but the only person you're hurting is yourself. Because that's how science works, the way I talk with you here I talk with other people and they talk the same way back and eventually we realise where we were wrong and find common ground or keep disagreeing but we always respect each other. @ Helen Thomas, thank you. I unfortunately can't reply to your other comment because you got rage downvoted too. I know why people are this way, another great benefit of having a scientific approach. It's already written in the bible where Jesus said "forgive them for they do not know what they do". It's important not to form negative emotions towards them for your own sanity, but also because that's what they expect and want - and if they don't get that they get more hostile. Now one thing I realised is that if I talk purely in emotions these people will accept the point much more likely than when I stick to facts and data. I've seen people going completely mad on that and instantly calming down when phrasing sentences with "I feel that way..." It's very interesting but also important because that means that we have to communicate science different to reach those people. And the question is: is there a way to do this without losing the essence of what science is. Haven't found one yet

You cherry-pick the science that makes your point and present it in a misleading manner. This is not objective or scientific. It's biased and emotional. I already countered your misleading claims about the masks and you pivoted to the problems with the government. That's an entirely different argument. The masks work. The government may not, but the masks, when used correctly, do. You have said nothing and shown nothing here to disprove that.

@Terra Cotta, Hold on there, it never was about wether masks work or not. That is not the topic at all here. So you accusing me to cherry pick while talking about something completely off topic... what's the word for it again? Ah yes hypocrite. But now I get it you guys all assume that I imply that masks don't work... well that just proves my point how anti-scientific you are. Pointing out one issue doesn't invalidate known positive effects, it just adds Information to make a decision. Yes masks do protect the individual wearing them, even surgical masks do have an effect although not designed for it. But the mass produced and used masks also caused issues. Now with that knowledge you can make an educated decision when and to whom it is beneficial to wear one or not. Unless of course you believe they had to be worn all time, but then you are a believer because there was never scientific conclusion that this is the way to go with the pandemic.

@Terra Cotta I didn't pivot to used masked I right from the beginning stated that this was an issue because of people reusing masks which shouldn't be done and that it's not important what should but what is. And you have address issues as they are, not as you think they should be. I explained my reasoning why I see it this way and at no point did I support either of those two guys I simply say the point that was made was partly right and partly wrong. Also I try not to judge people. I think it's a very destructive thing to do and a sign of insecurity, once you stop looking for the reason but revert to judgement you lose your integrity to your insecurity.
