There are plenty of things that can comfort us: a warm hug from mom or dad, a gooey chocolate chip cookie fresh out of the oven, a puppy curling up in your lap to take a nap, and even some information about our world that can provide you a bit of hope. While the rest of the internet is flooded with news that might make your faith in humanity shrivel up, this article can be a brief break from all of that to experience a few moments of peace.
A week ago, Reddit user Subornion posted on Ask Reddit requesting readers to respond with some “VERY comforting facts”, and lucky for us, many people delivered. The post received over 13k comments, featuring a host of interesting and uplifting fun facts, so we’ve gathered some of our favorites down below for you to read, as well as interviews with Subornion about how this conversation began in the first place and Corey Ferreira, co-founder of the meditation app Declutter the Mind, about how meditation can bring our lives some comfort. Be sure to upvote the responses that make you feel warm and fuzzy inside, and then if you’re interested in learning even more positive facts, check out this Bored Panda piece next.

Switzerland has implemented a scheme ‘Time Bank’; which is an old-age assistance programme, under which, people can volunteer to look after the elderly who require assistance, and then, the number of hours they spend with or caring for seniors gets deposited in their individual social security account.Eventually, when the volunteer reaches that old age when he or she requires support, this ‘Time Bank’ can help them by providing time-based services which include consultations, babysitting, hairdressing, gardening, tutoring, or any other time-consuming job in addition to being looked after by a volunteer as well.About 34 countries are trying to apply this scheme.
Very Wholesome and humane!
As I have never heard of this, it got me to do some research. And "Switzerland" in this context is a teeny tiny bit exaggerated. The government had a study done (2007) to see if this could be implemented in Switzerland as a project to help elderly people to stay home a bit longer, instead of going in a retirement home. So the only place I found doing this, is St. Gallen (since at least 2012) and Rapperswil-Jona (since 2021). Two cities is better than none, though that hardly means "Switzerland" is doing this. In any case the idea is a good one. (https://www.bsv.admin.ch/bsv/de/home/sozialpolitische-themen/alters-und-generationenpolitik/zeitvorsorge.html ; https://www.zeitvorsorge.ch/)
Thanks for the research. I live in Switzerland and never heard of this before too
Load More Replies...If it is whole and humane, which I am in total agreement, we really can't call it a scheme can we?
I'd guess they mean scheme in the 'plan' or 'service' sense.
Load More Replies...I think there should be a program where living facilities like nursing homes had apartments on the top floors and people could rent these apartments and get a huge break or get free rent by volunteering hours to work with the elderly people. Like daily having meals with them, driving them to appointments, spending a specific amount of time playing games with them or even watching a movie. There could be specific rules about what they would need to provide as well as background checks, and rules about noise and having guests at the apartment. But they would live in the same building together so it would facilitate spending the time with each other. I think a lot of people would jump on an opportunity to save money and also help older people who may not have any family to visit them. The free or lower rent would give them the ability to save up for a house and it could even help the economy and housing crisis.
They do this in some elderly houses in the Netherlands
Load More Replies...I fear we have too many people who would use this to prey on the vulnerable.
Load More Replies...You mean act like a community and look after those in need? I'm not sure you need a timebank for this.
With the hustle and bustle of our daily routines, it can be hard to make time for anything that bring us joy or comfort. Wake up, commute to a stressful job, work for 8 hours, sit in rush hour on the way home, return home to face responsibilities and chores, rinse and repeat. We get so caught up in our obligations that we forget to stop and smell the roses. I urge you to take the next 10 minutes while you read this article to take some deep breaths, play some relaxing music, grab a warm cup of tea or coffee, and fully embrace some comfort. Don’t feel guilty about it. You deserve a moment of rest.
We reached out to Subornion on Reddit to hear her thoughts on this topic. She told Bored Panda that nothing in particular inspired her to start this conversation last week, but she’s very happy with how the post turned out. When asked why we all need to hear some comforting facts every now and then, and she told us, “Honestly, especially with what's happening in the US, sometimes our faith in humanity needs to be restored, and this post allowed hundreds of people to help each other with that.” She is referring to the Supreme Court's recent decision to overturn Roe v. Wade, eliminating millions of Americans' access to safe abortions. That devastating news is certainly a valid reason to seek out some positivity.
There is a group of bikers called bikers against child abuse who support child abuse victims in court by looking tough and giving the kids confidence to testify against their abusers it’s actually an international group
I love these guys. They show up at the victims house. Make them an official member. Give them their own jacket. Give them a lift and escort to court. Then they will sit in the court (pretty much taking over the gallery) to show support for the victim. There need to be more groups like this.
They will also sit outside victims’ homes if the children are scared that the abuser might come after them.

We have that group here too in Las Cruces New Mexico called Guardians of the Children. They are awesome.
We also asked Subornion if any of the responses to her post particularly resonated with her. “The responses that meant the most to me were the ones that talked about how they genuinely appreciated a post like this,” she told us. “And also that one comment that talked about how rats giggle to themselves.” We're thankful Subornion sparked this conversation, because now we all get to receive a little comfort from strangers on the internet too.
It is amazing how soothing a few words on a screen can be. According to Dr. Andrew Newberg and Dr. Mark Robert Waldman, co-authors of the book Words Can Change Your Brain, “A single word has the power to influence the expression of genes that regulate physical and emotional stress.” Their book even explains how exercising positive thinking can affect how we perceive reality. “By holding a positive and optimistic [word] in your mind, you stimulate frontal lobe activity. This area includes specific language centers that connect directly to the motor cortex responsible for moving you into action. And as our research has shown, the longer you concentrate on positive words, the more you begin to affect other areas of the brain.”
Crows will let other crows know if you’re a good person. Feeding a crow in your backyard can quickly become many crows over time since the rumour spreads. And nearby crows in your area will know you as one they like. They can also be known to be protective of you and even bring you gifts. Sufficed to say, crows are one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet and they are truly underrated
I love them too! I always leave a mango or two outside for them; it's so much fun watching them eat in groups.
Load More Replies...How do I attract specifically crows, not other birds? Is there something Crows prefer?
You could use a decoy crow on your backyard to attract crows only. Then again since they are so intelligent, they might hate you for that and b***h about you in their weekly gatherings.

They'll also let all their friends know if you're a bad person too, so never p**s off a crow or you'll have a murder after you for life.
This is just FYI: A group of crows are referred to as a murder. I just love knowing that. I wouldn't mind an army of um though.

One great way you can find a little comfort in your daily life is by practicing meditation, so we reached out to Corey Ferreira, co-founder of Declutter the Mind to hear from an expert on the topic. First, we wanted to know how Corey became interested in meditation in the first place. "Many years ago when I was 17, I was on a high school field trip where we as a class, visited different monasteries, churches, and temples to learn about world religions," he told us. "When we visited a Buddhist temple, we were taught by a monk how to meditate. While we were too young and rambunctious to appreciate it and understand it, when I later went home it stuck with me. It certainly made me feel different, especially as a young introvert with a racing mind. For years I thought I 'knew' or understood meditation, but it wasn't until my mid-twenties when I went on my first Vipassana meditation retreat that I began to deepen my practice and carry it over to my daily life."
There is a type of mold growing on/around the Elephant's Foot in Chernobyl. This mold eats radiation, and the radioactivity of the Elephant's Foot has decreased drastically since the mold started growing there. idk, it's just comforting to me that the planet can heal no matter how bad the scar we left.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radiotrophic_fungus Although it doesn't say anything about a drop in radioactivity cause by the growth.
Load More Replies...There is fungus that eats oil, one that eats plastic, another that eats cigarette butts. Fungi is the past, present and future.
We aren't killing the planet, just making it inhospitable for ourselves. Plenty of other life forms out there ready to take over
Load More Replies...The fungus doesn't eat radiation, it eats the contamination. It might sound nitpicky but there is a difference. You could say contamination is like poop and radiation the smell. It does reduce some radiation by converting what it eats to a more stable form, but the real benefit is the fungus can be harvested and safely stored
Oh forgot to add the big benefit in chernobyl is that this fungus leaches the contamination out of the ground. Before this fungus the only way to clean the soil was by digging all of it out and replacing with clean. Not exactly feasible for Chernobyl
Load More Replies...What's the bacteria going to eat AFTER all the radiation is gone and it's HUNGRY AF...
The best part is it probably didn't even exist before the explosion. Darwinian evolution is truly a wonderful thing.
‘Save our planet’, NO, the planet will not die! It’s the animal(including human) and plants that dies! It should be ‘Save ourselves!’
If it's effectively "eating"/neutralizing Gamma particles, that's amazing, but also kinda scary.
OP should read less Marcel comics. No biological lifeform can "eat" radiation. The mold only can bind radioactive dust so that it doesn't spread in the surrounding.
I fail to see what a French comic about a mime has anything to do with this.
Load More Replies..."it's eats radiation" ...that can't be right. And that wouldn't decrease how radioactive the foot is. Surely it eats radioactive material?
We also asked Corey to share some of the benefits we can experience from meditation. "The reason meditation is often called a 'practice' is because it's taking time out of your day to practice mindfulness. When you practice this enough with meditation, you can start to live more mindfully and in the present moment in your daily life," he explained. "What this truly means to me is that you stop living life on auto-pilot. You stop getting caught up in the momentum of your life, and living at the whim of your emotions, thoughts, and immediate reactions. Life is a little less of a blur and thus, I'm able to really appreciate things, people, and places instead of being lost in thought or living in my head constantly. This has a lot of side effects. Being a more mindful person and living a more examined life can make you happier, calmer, patient, empathetic, grateful, and just improve overall wellbeing and mental health."

My favorite Fred Rogers quote: "Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping."
Beautiful sweater. Mrs. Rogers raised a great son! May he RIP! 😊❤️🤗🙏
Corey even shared some tips for people who are interested in meditation but just don't know where to start. "Of course, thanks to technology, you don't need to go on a retreat or find a teacher to learn how to meditate or do a simple practice. While that's great for those who can and want to do it, you could start with a simple online 5 minute guided practice. You can either find one on YouTube, or from a podcast, or of course, a guided meditation app like ours, Declutter The Mind, which is free to download and use. I would recommend anyone interested start with a simple 5 minute mindfulness meditation practice and use their breath as an anchor for their attention. And it's really just as simple as watching the breath and body breathe on its own, and whenever the mind wanders, or you catch your mind lost in thought, you gently bring it back to the breath. Repeating this process helps build that mindfulness muscle, that we can then more easily use outside of the practice and in our daily lives."
Lastly, Corey wanted to add that, "Meditation doesn't need to be 'woo-woo' or have any spiritual or religious contexts to be effective. We all know what living in the moment, being present, and entering flowstates feels like. This is simply a way to practice this so we can get there more in our daily lives. Of course, there are levels to it and ways to deepen your practice and learn about some ideas and philosophies around the mind, consciousness, and ego. But start simple and seek out the teachers and practices that offer you something rational and simple."
The dog estimates the time of your return home by how much of your smell is left in the house from your morning routine.
Cats, on the other hand, couldn't care less until the food stops appearing.
Not true, my cat waits by the window looking for me and greets me at the door, meows excitedly, and wants to be picked up and cuddled.
Load More Replies...When I was growing up, our two Labradors ran to the window as soon as they heard my mum's car engine turn into our road. It didn't matter how long she'd been gone, they knew when she wasn't far away. They couldn't see the car until it was in the drive, and we humans couldn't hear the car coming. Usually took about 30 seconds between them going to the window and my mum turning into our drive. I guess what I am trying (badly) to say is that there are other factors as well.
We have cameras in our house and noticed that every day, around 30 mins before we arrive home, the dog sits in the window waiting for us. I was starting to suspect he could read time on the clock 😜
Sometimes you have a cat who wants to help. Very scary when you are cutting aut a carpet and suddenly the cat "helps" by holding the carpet with a paw, just were you were going to cut. But very nice if you are trying to keep a man from getting in your frontdoor, and suddenly your cat appear in double size growling like a dog. The man withdrew at once!
Load More Replies...Corey discussed some of the benefits of meditating already, but let's dive in a bit deeper. According to Healthline, there are plenty of science-backed benefits ranging from reducing stress to helping fight addiction. In one eight-week-long study, regular practice of mindfulness meditation “resulted in [participants having] a significantly smaller post-stress inflammatory response”. Similarly, meditation can help us keep our anxiety under control, as mindfulness meditation has been found to reduce symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder. When we are not dealing with crippling stress and anxiety, we have more energy to explore the hobbies we love and strengthen our relationships with friends and family members. Finding just 15 minutes to practice meditation every day might go a long way.
I once found a ladybug in my room in the middle of winter. I tried to look up if I could feed it somehow, and found countless other people asking the same question. The world is full of people who have compassion enough to feed a lone bug in the winter.
We had a ladybug overwinter with us once. In addition to giving it fruit, we supplemented with a bit of butter on recommendation from a vet because our house plants didn't have enough mites/aphids on them. Spots survived the winter and we released her when it was warm enough in the spring.
Load More Replies...There's a small animal rescue called The Pipsqueakery and they have rescued bumblebees a couple of times! From what I remember, it happened during a warm snap at the end of winter and a random bee wandered in, but it was going to be too cold to put it back outside. So, they made a little habitat for it and figured out what to feed it! This has happened at least twice, maybe three times? I don't remember if the bees were released when it was warm enough or if they just lived out their little bee lives at The Pipsqueakery, but it was really sweet!

Several species of ladybugs actually gather in frost-free places and hibernate there. Some are even quite invasive, one winter I had dozens of them suddenly showing up in my living room (my windows are often opened). I must admit I was a bit overwhelmed and didn't know what to do.

Sometimes dogs in movies have to have CGI tails because they keep wagging their tails. They are just so happy to be there!
Yup. EVERYPLACE is "the best place they've ever been."
Load More Replies...This is especially true, I've heard, of dogs playing villain roles. The dogs are supposed to be attacking the actors and being vicious, but if their tails get in the shot, they are wagging so hard that they have to be edited out.
There's this movie called "Summer of Sam" which focuses on the Son of Sam murders which has a part where the demon dog tells David Berkowitz to kill. After promising the dog to do so, the dog wags his tail like crazy! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HaWtWAvUb-4
Load More Replies...To be fair, the dogs that wouldn't be wagging their tails would be dogs that really didn't enjoy that type of work and shouldn't be on set to start with (our dog would be extremely nervous of it all)
They've had to do this with wolves, too. This fact always makes me smile because you can teach barking and snarling but you can't teach a tail not to wag.
Aww... they're so happy to be good dogs that they can't keep it in!
The Saint Bernards in "Cujo" had to have their tails tied down because they were wagging them too much!
That’s something I didn’t know! But still when I saw that movie the first time it scared the beejesus outta me!

Load More Replies...Meditation has also been found to promote emotional health and increase our self-awareness. One medical review including trials with over 3,500 participants found that mindfulness meditation can improve symptoms of depression. By increasing positive thoughts and lessening symptoms of depression, individuals are less likely to dwell on negative news and more likely to accept comforting information. Using meditation to increase self-awareness is also a great trick to steer our mindsets into a more positive direction. The better we know ourselves, the easier it is to set boundaries around following negative news cycles and seek out more constructive media or activities instead.
India's tiger population grew from 1,411 in 2006 to 2,967 tigers as per the 2018 census. Based on the best available information, tiger populations are stable or increasing in India, Nepal, Bhutan, Russia and China. It's illegal in Switzerland to own just one guinea pig. You have to have at least two if you want to have any. Guinea pigs get lonely.
My American friend had two guinea pigs for this reason. They loved to play together and snuggle. When one passed away of old age, the other followed soon after.

Obama was the president for 8 years. Confederacy existed for 4 years. America had a black president longer than the confederacy existed.
Four years? Really? I did not know that. Considering how big a deal the confederacy still is to some Americans I thought it existed longer. But to be honest I never really gave it any thought.

That is not the Confederacy. The Confederacy is the declaration of intent to form a government where slavery was legal, and fight for slavery to continue, in protest of the anti-slavery laws that had been passed by the majority in the house. This was a splitting of the legal government of the U.S. creating 2 separate government entities, the original union, and the confederacy of states opposing the new anti slavery laws of the union. The confederacy fought for the economic interests of all slave holders who would be bankrupt by reversing slavery without economic compensation for the value of the slaves.

Bees inform their friends about good flowers nearby by dancing.
Not only that. Different species have different dances. But researches once grew a colony mixed of european and chinese honeybees and they were capable of learning each others language. Making it not instinctual but a learned behaviour.
And each hive has an entrance dance to get into the hive. If they mess itup they have to leave, come back and try again.
Load More Replies...Bees can communicate a number of complex things. When a hive swarms (usually half a hive) they collect up in a nearby tree (called bearding). They then send the older workers out to find potential new homes. When they get back, they can communicate distance, heading, pros/cons, surrounding, etc. Then they all vote on which location to move to. Researcher from Cornell University (Thomas Seeley) was able to figure it all out and wrote a book on it. "Honeybee Democracy" Fascinating read.

If you value any sort of alone time do not get a Maine c**n. Mine is 2 years old and follows me around more than any dog I have ever had. Eh, there doesn't seem to be concrete evidence for this, it's just one possible reason. More probable is that you're a captive audience when you're on the pot, kind of like when you settle on the couch to read a book. If you struggle to find ways to incorporate random acts of kindness into your daily life, meditation might be able to inspire you in that regard as well. There is a specific type of meditation called metta, that focuses on cultivating kindness for all beings. One month-long study of 50 university students found that by practicing metta meditation 3 times a week, they were able to improve their positive emotions, interpersonal interactions and understanding of others. Similarly, people struggling with addiction can even use meditation to help manage their emotions, cravings and stress. By understanding themselves better and exercising more compassion, it is possible for people battling addiction to use meditation to reduce triggers and seek out healthier coping mechanisms.

If you're having a general anaesthetic for a routine operation, and worried about dying while under, please be aware there are about 7 different "levels" of stuff we can do to bring you back.
So if the thing we normally do doesn't work, we've got plan B, then we've got plans C, D, E, F, G& H. ( and we rarely need to even go to Plan C, let alone the rest!)
It's ridiculously rare for you to never wake up from a routine op, of course it happens occasionally, but for every case you've heard about it happening, there's THOUSANDS of identical operations where it didn't. I've been qualified 15 years and it's literally never happened anywhere I've worked.
I'm more concerned about waking up during a procedure....happened to me once.

Everybody is different. We had two women have nearly identical spinal fusion surgeries back to back by the same surgeon. Both were RNs themselves yet. 2 hours after surgery, the first one was fine & demanded to go home. The doctor discharged her. She refused her script for pain meds & never had any pain. The second one was already a hyper type. A co-worker of mine. She was in severe pain & puked for 18 hours after surgery. The vomiting was so bad that she messed the bed out the other side of her body. I stayed after my shift & took personal care of her. To her, it was the worst experience of her life.

After conducting numerous studies with her team, Amishi found that the exact cocktail to see benefits from your meditation training over the course of a month is 12 minutes per day, 5 days a week.
There’s a place in Japan called “Capybara land” where you can hang out with capybaras and see them chilling in hotsprings
I misread that as 'kings of chili ' and had visions of capybaras cutting up peppers...
Load More Replies...These are wonderful animals who make the most beautiful noises! You can hear them singing here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vmQ6BaZi-go. I met one twenty years ago in Peru. An ecolodge where I was staying had adopted an orphaned capybara, and the tourists would feed him papayas.
I know, I know, but "....chilling in hotsprings...." still sounds peculiar.
Similar to the Australian Rottnest Island where you can hang out with quokkas.
Zebras rest with their heads on each other’s backs so they can literally watch their zebra buddy’s back. Plus it looks like a zebra hug.
They also register as tinned tomatoes when they get scanned at the supermarket.
But since every Zebra has a different one, somewhere there's a zebra wich registers as lavander scented diapers for grandparents
Load More Replies...Horses do that too, and they gently rub their teeth on a specific massage point at the top of each other's withers, which helps them to relax and bond together. Meanwhile they can also chase flies around each other's heads with their tails. And this, my friends, is why horses are so much happier in life if you allow them to live in a herd.
Greyhounds too. They love to lean, and if they haven't got a human to lean on, they lean on eachother
Load More Replies...They also do this because predators vision isn't like our vision. We have 3 conal vision whereas normal zebra predators (lions) have two cones. So those zebras are camouflaged. Yes, you may look at them and be like... black and white sticks out. But in their vision, they aren't broken up. They can't differentiate between the two of them and when a whole herd is doing that they can't zero in on just one zebra to go after.

Most seahorses are monogamous and mate for life. Young seahorses actually go on “dates” with their prospective partner before settling and starting to procreate. They can also be seen swimming in pairs with their tails linked together

This is one of the reasons it’s horrible to catch seahorses in the wild. You’re probably separating them from their mate. There’s a seahorse farm in hawaii breeding polygamous seahorses. When they go to a new home, they don’t have to be matched exactly to be happy.
When you finally sit down to meditate, it can be difficult to stop your mind from wandering. Guided meditations can be the perfect solution to this problem. There are infinite options out there, helping listeners focus on their breath, posture, emotions and more. Thought i would share this, irish philosophy when it’s best 😜 Why Worry In life, there are only two things to worry about— Either you are well or you are sick. If you are well, there is nothing to worry about, But if you are sick, there are only two things to worry about— Either you will get well or you will die. If you get well, there is nothing to worry about, But if you die, there are only two things to worry about— Either you will go to heaven or hell. If you go to heaven, there is nothing to worry about. And if you go to hell, you’ll be so busy shaking hands with all your friends You won’t have time to worry!
I like this saying. Plus I love how the last part about shaking your friend#s hands in hell can be interpreted as a warning against having bad friends. Who you keep around you really does influence your life.
It's not a warning about having bad friends, it means you'll have fun with your old friends.

Sometimes shelters can be so stupid... our local shelter did only allowed you to take one dog for a 30m walk. So if you had more time or you wanted to go more days you couldnt. Their dogs could be much more socialized and walked but they refused because of their stuborness.
That's ridiculous! I don't understand that at all. Did they offer any reasons for such dumbassery?
Load More Replies...Our local shelter is similar, no kills, giant cat room. But, they also have cats in a few local stores. I made the mistake of getting one of those. He was 4 months old, previously broken leg (so probably traumatized) he was in a busy store, too small cage for a month. We have had him 3.5 years and I can still rarely even pet him. He is essentially a pet for my other cat, as they snuggle all the time. He is a little more willingly to let the kids touch him, and will occasionally lay on the top of the couch near them(with his cat)
Aww... I don't think you made a mistake. You are who he needs you to be. My mother-in-law adopted a feral cat, she only allowed her to handle her when she had her babies. She eventually caught her and got her spade and she live 18 years, but she would'nt allow anyone to pet her.

We have one near Manchester (UK), Bleakholt, where you can walk as many of them as you want; even adopt if you like. That's how they get some of their money to look after all the different animals
Keeping all the cats in one room can be very stressful for some cats. They do need space to be able to get away from others if they want.
But you can make safe places in a big room, for those cats who need them.

Old misogynist joke: Lock your dog and your wife in the trunk of your car for four hours and see which one is glad to see you.
You can talk to your pet rabbit by quickly pushing your lips downwards and upwards as if you were trying to look up your nose in a mirror. Do it quickly and you're chatting. It mimics the nose movements they make and you can see them wiggle their noses faster out of interest. Copy their rhythm to and watch them talk back.
Also, stomping your foot like they do as well as turning your back on them when annoyed is understood too. If they have chewed something they shouldn't have you can stomp one foot and turn around with your arms folded. Have a look over your shoulder to make sure they see you. They should come to check on you and if they don't stomp and make sure they see your back is turned. Eventually they get it and come over to make sure your ok. Then let the nose waggling commence.
You can expect them to do the same to you as well, like when you clean their enclosure.
Please tell me I’m not the only one that just tried “quickly pushing your lips downwards and upwards as if you were trying to look up your nose in a mirror.”

Monarch butterfly populations are doing better. Not out of the dark, but better. I found a monarch caterpillar on my milkweed the other day.
We have a bunch of milkweed that has started growing in our flower beds and we just let it do its thing. It's not a weed at all to us! Plus we love seeing the butterflies and bees.
We've managed to propagate milkweed all over our huge yard, and we did see several Monarchs laying eggs last year.
I was at a house today that had dozens for monarch caterpillars in there plants and a few hatched butterflies and chrysalis’s. Unfortunately it’s coming into winter here.
If I didn't live in a rented house I would plant a whole bunch of milkweed and butterfly and bee friendly plants. However, it's already summer and too late for planting and I haven't talked to my new landlord about a garden.
My dog will always love me no matter how bad I f**k up in life. Although it might be a bit sad, she truly is my best friend.
Your pet doesn't care how fat you are, or if you're ugly. They don't care if you do something embarrassing or if you walk around naked. They don't care if you do something wrong. They just want to love you. I can't understand people who abuse dogs because literally all they want is to make you happy and they love you unconditionally. They don't even have to know why, if you lift your voice to talk to them, their tails will start wagging. If you're happy, they are, too.
Not sad at all , pets are more loyal than most people . My dogs and cat are my best friends as well .
My dog and cat are my best friends, my family, my children.. they are always laying with me when I fall asleep and when I wake up, waiting in the window when I come home, and even hang out in the bathroom with me. They always want to hang out with me whether we are playing it relaxing, if I'm happy or sad. They're going to be by my side for as long as whatever god there may be will allow. That is comforting to me.
I love my dog more than any other human except my husband. Every person in my life has let me down or abandoned me on some traumatic level. He loves me more than he loves himself and lives for the time we spend together.
That’s not sad at all. That’s how people should be. I’m not ditching a friend because they fùck their own life up - isn’t that when they need a damned friend the most? I think it is.

Nobody pays all that much attention to you. Everyone is the main character in their story and thinks you’re just another supporting role or an NPC. I find this very freeing.
I fint it the opposite. Because you are "just an npc" most people do not spare a second to be empathic to others. So they will judge you very harsly for anything you do.
I think that would depend on the person. Some people decide to purposely mess with Npcs because they figure it won’t effect them. Some people have favorites that they treat as pets. And some are just nice to them. I think the original poster is saying that they think of other people as someone that would just see an npc as an npc. They’re just kinda there and what they do isn’t really any of your concern. Some people find that comforting.

Cheetahs are very shy animals. So some zoos give them support dogs like those for humans. Its the cutest thing ever.
The bigger reason for this is that cheetahs vision likes to hyperfocus. In a crowd like ones at the zoo, they would get anxious looking at each individual and would try to analyze each person, which can be very stressful for them. Dogs are VERY good at reading groups and crowds. They pair a dog with the Cheetah to rely on emotionally. If the dog is calm, the cheetah will trust them that there's nothing to worry about from those crowds.
How zoo prevent the cheetah from killing the dog? They're typically introduced at a VERY young age and imprint on each other. Cheetah's are also not naturally driven to kill dogs as prey. A cheetah could kill a dog, but typically a cheetah would never hunt a dog in the wild. If it was in its territory, or if a dog appeared hurt and by itself, a Cheetah might go for an opportunistic kill, but those are special circumstances. The most likely situation you'd see in the wild would be if they were hunting the same prey and they fought over a kill.
You know how dogs get down in front with their butt in the air when it's play time? That's called a "play bow" and it's a common signal for play in the animal kingdom. A guy once watched as a bear wandered up to his sled dogs and, after the animals investigated one another, they all kind of did the play bow and proceeded to romp around the area having a f*****g blast. They'd repeat the motion occasionally to confirm with each other that yes, they were still playing, and in the case of the bear, to signal to these new friends that mauling was not in the plans for today. The human stayed away and watched from afar because 1) he was surprised the bear did not instinctually murderize the dogs, and 2) he didn't want to be injured if he disrupted play time himself to "rescue" them.
Primates have also a similar sign called play face where they bare their theeth but signaling that they are being playful. So they "fight" but in a fake way. A bit like a parent telling a kid 'I am a monster i will eat you' whitout the kid being agraid because of the voice and context.
They do! It's quite funny. When one of my dogs sneezes for real, he goes for it big time and snotters and that's definitely a lot less funny.

If you quit smoking by age 40, your life expectancy is the same as a non-smoker. Also: it's never too late to quit.
Problem is cancer is literally a random mutation. you are constantly disposing of cancer cells, until one day you aren't. It's why some people can smoke till they die, cancer free and others who never took a toke, die. Very insidious disease. While you can reduce the chances, it's not the same as eliminating them.
I was just reading a study where they were finding life long smokers were actually less likely to get lung cancer, because the damage from smoking caused their lungs to constantly replace the damaged cells. I think about this because that's what happened to my father in law. He smoked 55+ years and was just fine. He finally quit, and was a year smoke free when he developed very aggressive cancer and lost the battle within a few months.

Idk if this counts, but despite the fact that they were staunch political rivals on the national scale, Kennedy and Nixon were close friends, even though Kennedy beat Nixon in the 1960 election. When Kennedy died, Nixon made a handwritten letter to Jackie Kennedy, stating, "While the hand of fate made Jack and me political opponents I always cherished the fact that we were personal friends from the time we came to Congress together in 1947. The nation will be forever grateful for your service as First Lady." It just goes to show how people can get past their political rivalries
Currently, I couldn't be friends with someone whose politics were opposite mine. To me, it's a red flag that we don't share the same (or even similar) values.
You can’t make friends with or enjoy the company of anyone who has differing political beliefs from you? Ooof, not sure if I’d brag about that personally, but fair enough, everyone is different. Consider this: It’s kinda cool to experience different perspectives on the world though and learn why some people think the way they think, even if you ultimately don’t agree with them. You can learn a lot this way too, as opposed to keeping yourself stagnant in your own echo chamber bubble where you only hear/see the messages you agree with - thus narrowing your perspective of the world, which helps no one, least of all yourself. Learning new ideas and perspectives helps you grow as a human and builds great problem-solvers. Sometimes “agreeing to disagree - because we like each other more than we care about some political opinion or whatever” is a beautiful form of friendship :) not everyone’s open to that though, and not everyone gets lucky enough to experience that either - and that’s cool too! Either way, being open-minded is best. Much love 🧡

If that is ignored they may growl to make the point that you are in their space and they aren't comfortable. Our dog does this, his tail will wag but it's tight tiny wags and he'll roll a bit to his back. He's not playing he's displaying submission. If he's being silly and we are playing his tail will be flying. If he rolls over then it's please rub my belly and let's play some more.
Renewable energy is now a lot cheaper than coal and other fossil fuels.
I read a day ago that the EU voted for banning the sale of new diesel and gasoline cars by 2035 :)
Big steps in the right direction :) But they need to think more open minded for it to work. For example people living in apartments do not have chargers in theie home so an electric car nowadays is impossible for them (my parents have that issue). Electricity is also extremely expensive and governments give so much power to electrical companies that installing solar panels is more often than not an economic loss. We had them in belgium and even charging the car many days we created more energy than we used. And we still paid a lot of money for electricity because you get paid like 6c for producing but you pay 27c for using.
Load More Replies...California had to ask people not to charge their cars during a massive heat wave because the grid couldn't handle it. NB electric car prices went up 22% year over year.
Source? I don't believe that for a second. Most companies in a capitalist context will not use fossil fuels for the fun of it. They do it because it's less expensive/more abundant. If renewable energy was cheaper (not even a lot cheaper) it would be used more. You need to factor in maintenance in the calculations of course.
There is still a lot of work to do though. Electric motors still can't compete with fossil fuel engines in terms of raw power. Just compare a gas powered leaf blower to an electric one. I can see the switch to electric vehicles in the near future, but I don't think they will go away for things like manufacturing or construction in the same time frame
Sadly in Spain where a live they don´t make it easy for you to install input your power to the grid. By far the cheapest solution is not to have a load of batteries and expensive inverters that have to be over dimensioned to count for peaks in demand. The simple solution is to inject all you produce into the public net work if you have surplus. When you need the power the electric company can give it back. So annoying considering the sun we have.
Because business is being protected better than the environment.

Why would people come up with the idea of petting fish in the first place? 🤔
This is true! I had a puffer fish many years ago and I swear that I could put my palm in the water and it would swim into my palm allowing me to gently rub its back. Honestly, to this day I am amazed at this!
Years ago I had an aquarium with 3 goldfish and one of them liked having a gentle nose rub. The other 2 not so much.
Global forest cover is actually increasing
Edit: interesting this has blown up a bit.
I posted this link initially - the criticisms below that it still showed declines for the world are actually valid, in *one* sense:
https://ourworldindata.org/grapher/forest-area-as-share-of-land-area?tab=chart&time=earliest..latest&country=England~Scotland~FRA~USA®ion=World
That is based on the UN FRA survey data.
However, what I was thinking of was this data:
https://courses.seas.harvard.edu/climate/eli/Courses/global-change-debates/Sources/Forest-fires/more/Song-etal-2016.pdf
Which actually demonstrates the opposite conclusion to the FRA data, and convincingly shows (using satellite data) that forest cover has in fact been increasing since the 80s.
Why the discrepancy? Well the link below explains some of it. But the basic point is that the FRA data is based on aggregating national reported statistics, and it turns out that national reported statistics are deeply unreliable in many countries.
https://www.cgdev.org/blog/three-reasons-fao’s-new-forest-numbers-don’t-add
So, there’s a slightly more interesting story behind the statement than first appears. Those criticising me for picking the wrong chart are right, but only as far as me rushing and posting a chart from the wrong data series. If they want to criticise the statement itself, they have to address the *Song et al.* data series.
The quality of the tree cover should be factored in - ancient rain forest lost vs gained sapling in either abandoned or previously barren land. Hopefully won’t all be cut down when population centres shift due to climate change.
the pollen that bees collect on their legs as they pollinate flowers are called pollinator pants!!! so next time you see bees hard at work, take a look at their legs, and you might be able to see the pants depending on how much they've pollinated :)
Some pants are different colors too. Early spring my bees come in wearing blue and orange as well as yellow. Sometimes it's green, occasionally brownish red.

VERY different rates of regeneration depending on the tissue. The skin is completely renewed every 4 weeks or so, the linings of the gut and stomach regenerate even faster, the cells in the eyes barely regenerate at all.
If I remember correctly nerves don't do that at all. Which is why one hardly ever recovers from paraplegia or tetraplegia. They can heal but when they die there is no regeneration. On the other hand we grow new nerves in our brains up till old age, which is good 😁

A middle or even low income people in developed countries are living a much more comfortable life than the richest people centuries or even millennia ago, in large part thanks to modern medicine making death from a mere infection no longer a near guaranteed death.
I mean we cannot afford housing, healthcare or other basic necessities. Yes, medicine has advanced a lot. But no, we dont live better than rich people in the past. Just longer.
I disagree. We have safe, clean water at a tap, can light up a room with a switch, heat a house by turning a k**b, have access to the total human knowledge in our pockets, can view any great work of art whenever we want and can communicate instantly with anyone we know. There's not a king in history that had those comforts.

The vast majority of people with a first time seizure will never have another seizure again and will not need lifelong anti seizure medication. Everybody gets one freebie!
Seizures are WILD. I've had some pretty unbelievable experiences throughout my many seizures. Two stick out the most- one time I somehow saw myself from the corner of the ceiling, looking down at myself lying in bed with the paramedics walking in. The second thing I cannot explain was seeing my late grandmother during a seizure and apparently when I came around I told my partner I wanted to stay with her.
Haven't had a seizure, but once I passed out for 5-10 minutes due to fever. It was pretty weird- - there was this phase where I was hearing something like a cacophony of voices, all speaking at the same time. Then I came to and they were gone... but for a few minutes it was like I had tuned in to some paranormal radio.
