Vegan Gets Served A Real Burger Without Even Knowing It, And Her Experience Ignites An Important Discussion

Carnivores vs vegans is an age-old conflict that doesn’t seem to be coming to an end any time soon. It’s really tense. And while there is no easy way to settle it, I think we can agree that a little empathy from both sides could do a lot of good. This story, however, is about something from the opposite side of the spectrum.

Yesterday, Redditor u/NarfoOnTheNet rediscovered a once-viral Tumblr thread about a server who thought it was OK to give a vegan girl a real hamburger. It touches on such important topics as religion, health, ethics, and remains relevant to this day, so we thought it’s only appropriate we shared it with you, dear Pandas, as well.

Image credits: Pavel Danilyuk (not the actual photo)

This story is very similar to the one we covered last week. Only it was inspired by a real-life situation.

When Tumblr users discovered this exchange on Twitter, they couldn’t stay silent about it

The discussion touched on such important topics as religion, health, and ethics

And once again reminded that diners need to get exactly what they order

As we mentioned in our publication last Friday, we should be paying extra attention to prevent similar scenarios as people are now way more sensitive to food than they were in the past.

Over 170 foods have been reported to cause allergic reactions but the major culprits are milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, wheat, soy, fish, and crustacean shellfish. They are usually the ones responsible for most of the serious food allergy reactions.

Researchers estimate that 32 million Americans have food allergies, including 5.6 million children under the age of 18. That equates to 1 in 13 children, or roughly two in every classroom. Plus, about 40 percent of children with food allergies are allergic to more than one food.

The Centers for Disease Control & Prevention reported that the prevalence of food allergy in children increased by 50 percent between 1997 and 2011.

There is no single explanation for why these numbers are increasing, but science has some theories. A popular one is that improved hygiene is to blame, as children are not getting as many infections. Parasitic infections, in particular, are normally fought by the same mechanisms involved in tackling allergies.

Each year, 200,000 people in the US require emergency medical care for allergic reactions to food.

Sadly, there is no cure for food allergy, and avoiding triggers is the only way to prevent a reaction.

Both industry workers and customers found this behavior unacceptable

I'm a muslim. When I eat out, I say that I'm a vegetarian so I don't do meat. Because not everybody knows what halal means. And also I don't want to answer questions about my religion when I'm only there to get my food. So this is so messed up. Poor girl would be really sad, if she knew it.

You need to eat the foods that you are comfortable eating. Food is so important in our daily lives. But to be told that you have to eat this or have to eat that is just total bs. I was vegetarian for 23 years. I'm not now, but I also eat very little meat. I don't care who you are, or why you eat what you do, it is Your choice, or decision, and Nobody has the right to substitute other foods or dictate what is right for you. Only you.

Dont feed vegans or vegetarians meat on purpose without them knowing! There's a reason they don't rat meat and that reason could be an allergy or religion. But, the Lone Star Tick is a bastard made me laugh.

I had a hairstylist that told me she did this to her vegan friends without their knowledge. She put chicken broth in pot luck meals and told them it was vegan. She laughed when she said they called the next day to say they spent the day in the bathroom with diarrhea. I was furious because my husband is vegan because of issues with gout. I got her fired from her job when I told the manager that I would not be back as long as she was working there and why.

This! Also don't try to slip people alcohol or question them endlessly, if they don't want alcohol. And yes, I eat meat and drink alcohol myself, I just have some lovely vegetarian friends and friends, who don't drink alcohol (one doesn't like the taste, the other has stomach problems, that get worse with alcohol). It's just amazing how triggering it is apparently to some douchebags, if others don't eat meat or drink alcohol. Smh

I stopped drinking all types of alcohol about 3 and a half years ago. I don't mind telling people who ask that it's because alcohol in any quantity and concentration above 0.5% proof WILL make me acutely suicidal within the week. Yes a single glass of wine will do it, no, I don't miss the 'buzz' because I never particularly liked being drunk anyway. My family, friends and colleagues have been great about it and the rare occasions when someone else has been a d**k about it, the mention of suicide usually shuts them up pretty quickly!

People keep saying "they could have an allergy"... but it is more than that. Just DON'T feed someone something that goes against their beliefs. The reason "why" they have dietary restrictions is irrelevant, just don't do it. I personally roll my eyes at many vegans, and while I mock them I would never fool someone as to what they put in their body.

It's not just because "they could have an allergy", it's because of society's general rule of "Don't Be An Asshole"! Seriously, the only reason to give a hamburger to a vegan is because you enjoy being a total d**k.

Someone here made a nasty commented asking "what type of 'meat'" implying this is fake. Her condition is called Alpha-gal syndrome, it is a sugar molicule in her body that causes an immuno-response allergic reaction to meat. Most people it only affects "red meat" like Beef or Pork, but in some cases it can react with poultry as well. Some very severe cases (not hers), they can get reactions to any animal byproducts they injest as well, like Milk. Hers was not that bad.

Not just vegetarians or vegans. Don't feed anyone anything without their knowledge! Muslims and Jews can't eat pork, and Quorn will make me hideously sick. As a family were trying to have at least two vegetarian meals a week because we do have some issues of conscience with meat, but it's made harder by the fact that I have a severe reaction to Quorn, although in some ways it's good because it makes me seek out actual vegetarian food and not just meat substitutes. Anyway, the point is, you serve me Quorn without me knowing and bad things will happen!

Chicken allergy - not deathly thankfully - that many people don't think is even possible. I've had chicken slipped into my food many times; by friends, family, waiters and chefs who want to prove that it isn't real. It's a filler meat here that is used in things like sausages so I had to reject most restaurant sausages due to not knowing the ingredients. It's much easier to say vegetarian than grill someone six ways from sunday about the ingredients in meat dishes. I've used the vegetarian excuse so much that I fell in love with vegetarian food and am now actually a vegetarian. Don't mess with food that you know will be consumed by others. I've seen people on this site supporting messing with food and drink intended to be consumed by others. Do not, ever, mess with food.

I don't know why people don't think it's possible. Chicken intolerance & allergies are pretty common in our cats & dogs, no reason they wouldn't be for us. I'm also horrified at the cruelty you've experienced. I've kin & friends with allergies and I've sometimes had to stomp on urges to roll my eyes as they've fussed ... but then again, after reading this thread, I doubt I'll feel the urge. Clearly, there are people just that cruel and stupid, and there are more reasons than I knew for their fear.

I had a family member cut ham into tiny pieces and hide it my mashed potatoes. Because they did not agree with me being a strict vegetarian and insisted I needed meat for protein. I was pretty irritated as I ate a few huge mouth fulls before I realized something tasted off.. My family all laughed and said I overreacted. I will never understand why my food choices have to be debated and explained every time I say I am a vegetarian. Every dam time.

Yeah, and then, they call you preachy. I once had a stern talk to my Grandma. Felt weird, but it consisted of "Try that again and I'm off for good!", for the exact same reason. Overreacted ... no. This is a serious topic, a decision that is neither up to anyone else, nor lacks any justification or reasoning behind it, but has plenty more than needed. Even if nonhuman animals would not feel a single thing, but plants did, even then, being a vegetarian would be the choice causing less suffering. Even if that is totally irrelevant, the greenhouse gasses emitted in order to produce meat would qualify as a valid reason, this fact alone, at least for a massice reduction of meat. I mean ... imagine that: as I have a chronic pain issue, I use Oxycodon. If I'd sneak some into Grandma's dish, after she refused to take it, would this be ok? In a nonthreatining dose even - no. Meat into a vegetarian's dish is a totally different level, still...

This is really mean, im vegan i dont care what other people eat but what i eat is my choice 🙁 i dont really trust restaurants i have a severe milk allergy and bought a cake once i was told was definitely vegan, it tasted great but i got really really sick afterwards so it definitely had milk in, i dont know why people do this you could make someone really ill! Even if its not an allergy people shouldnt do this, it could be their religion or farm animals might be some people’s favourite animal and it would be very upsetting to eat them, people who like dogs or cats would be horrified if they were tricked into eating dog or cat meat so please dont do this 😞

This horrifies me. My aunt is allergic to pork, my sister has IBS, my uncle has celiac disease and my mom is vegan. All of them could end up having food laced with the food they cannot - or don't want to - eat. Why would anyone do this? Even if it's simply a personal choice and not something that can endanger them, you do not make someone eat or drink something they've EXPLICITLY told you not to give them!

My boss on one of my jobs was very thick about people who are different from himself. He once served venison sausage to some important guests at the company that were Muslim. The butcher has to mix venison with 50% pork fat when making sausage. This is to keep the meat from being too dry when cooked because venison meat is so lean. He asked the guests if they like the sausage. They all said they did. Then Mr. Thick told them it was half pork fat, a forbidden food for Muslims. They were offended, of course. I guess he thought he was teaching them a lesson or something. Go figure. Don't do this, if you are in a similar situation. It would have been okay to use beef fat instead.

My dad's fiance has pulled this s**t on me before. I can't have whole wheat, almonds, large amounts of dairy or lavender. If I eat stuff with them in it I get sick or have very severe stomach cramps. Lavender triggers my asthma and gives me migraines. This woman has tried multiple times to feed me stuff with almonds in it. Last Christmas she handed me a plate of cookies and told me she made them specially for me. Yeah she made them specially, specially to make me sick. my little sister slapped the plate out of my hands and told me she watched and helped the fiance bake the cookies and that all of the cookies have almonds and whole wheat flour in them. The fiance proceeded to throw a fit because I wouldn't eat the poison cookies. This woman also thinks lavender is the best thing ever and fills her house with lavender stuff... Her garbage bags are even lavender scented

Why would it be more important if they were vegan for religious reasons? I'm fed up with that. A secular reason is, if any ranking is to be made, even to be more respectable than an unsupported belief. Religion has by no means any more right than any secular system of values, if anything, it may be equally respected. And also, her Dad is an a-hole. Someone should feed him to his daughter in a bruger - one bearing the label "Contains less than 3% human Flesh!" would be fine, I guess.

It doesn’t matter if there are medical reasons or not - it’s THEIR decision. Imagine that in any other scenario: you go to a clothing store to buy a blue shirt, you pay for a blue shirt, but the salesperson secretly packs a red shirt into your bag because they think blue shirts are stupid. What kind of entitlement is that??? Besides, even if their reason for being vegetarian or vegan is purely a personal choice - who gets to decide that their reason isn’t 'good enough'? I knew a girl who, as a preteen, was really into horses and one day unknowingly ate horse meat. When she found out, she was mortified and hasn‘t touched any meat since. Is that reason good enough? Is not liking the taste of meat good enough? I love meat and almost all other food, but when I invite people over, I always ask them what food they can‘t or don’t want to eat. If you‘re not willing to adapt to that, tell people so they can get food somewhere else rather than screwing them.

Even if someone is not allergic to a food product, you should respect that they simply don't want it. Could be ethics, could be religion, but it doesn't really matter. Another example of the need to just respect people saying "no."

My wife is allergic to tomatoes. Like, Epi Pen and go to the hospital allergic. So, when we say "no tomato" on the salad, we mean "make a fresh salad without tomato/change your gloves or wash your hands if you've been handling tomato", not "take a prepared salad and pick the tomatoes off." I've sent the ER bill to the restaurant more times than I care to count because the server or kitchen were too lazy to make new or thought they could just pick it out/take it off and everything would be ok. Have also had a family member serve us avocado chocolate pudding, and "surprise" us with the news after eating a bite. Avocado is another of her allergies. Congratulations, idiot, you're coming with us to the hospital. "Oh, I thought she just didn't like avocado!" Nope, and here's the bill for the emergency room visit. Respect food requests, folks.

This is a big no for every reason. Firstly, you do not have the right to change what the customer wants without permission.Secondly, as it has been rightly pointed that the person might want to eat specific stuff for some reason including allergies. If the person is hospitalised, are you willing to fend the hospital bill? if the person dies due to that, will you take the responsibility? Finally, eating anything is the person's right. That's it. YOU DO NOT GET THE CHOICE TO CHANGE THINGS. YOU HAVE NO RIGHT.

I have IC and when I'm in a flare there a lots of very specific things I can't eat, in fact I don't eat anything that I don't prepare during a flare for 2 reasons...I hate having to give a long drawn out explanation of what I have, questions etc. because not many people have heard of it and I've given the standard speech thousands of times and secondly anything I eat that is not safe for me will cause me a debilitating amount of pain and discomfort for days to weeks...a lot of times even if you tell someone that they won't take the amount of pain and disability that certain food can cause seriously. So to anyone who does this type of thing to another human being...feel free to come to my home and take care of all the people that depend on me, pay my bills and give me back the days, weeks and months I've spent in tears because you think you're funny.

This is the real reality. Everyone loves to s**t all over vegans and accuse them of being preachy assholes just by the sheer crime of existing. But far more often this sort of situation is the case. Multiple times I have had a meal with someone who didn't know I was vegetarian (because despite common belief, it is not something that is declared incessantly). They see that I ordered something without meat, ask if I'm vegetarian, and when I say yes, they absolutely lose their minds. Either screeching "How do you know someone's a vegetarian?" (even though I literally said nothing until they asked); or throwing a tantrum because now they "can't" order bacon because I'll be offended (even though I literally don't care); or shoving a piece of meat in my face and screaming at me to stop being such a fad-following piece of s**t; and so on. Omnivores are far more offended by what a vegan eats than vice versa.

it's so stupid, the amount of people who concern themselves with what others eat! I must have a bitch face though because when I explain people just accept. Or it's my weird diet that isn't associated with a known group such as vegans. I can't eat fibres (what? yes. one clementine or herring a day is too much fibre for me). It sucks. Live and let live. Nobody is forcing you to change your diet to theirs. Respect what other people do and don't want to eat. I gave up meat for my own ethical reasons. It was very, very upsetting to me when I was fed a supposedly animal-free food on an airline and I found myself with a mouthful of pig. I was fine physically (I spat it out), but it was really upsetting to me and triggered all the thoughts of animal cruelty that prompted me to stop eating animals in the first place. It was really distressing.

I think it should be mandatory for everyone in school to watch, "Food, Inc.", and "What The Health" (Netflix). If you LOVE animals the slightest bit, "Food Inc" will change you for the better. If you are into keeping in shape and love being in perfect health, you really should watch, "What The Health". ~Another good one is "The Game Changers" (Netflix) for the people who love to be strong or are fitness buffs or athletes. Jackie Chan and The Arnold produced this documentary. They were all game changers for me. You will come to understand veganism and actually come out with some comprehension and compassion.

I don't understand why people have problems with others who don't eat or do the things they do it's so dumb. Most of these talked about allergies and stuff but it shouldn't matter if they can or can't eat it if it's their choice it's their choice. Also, you can still love the taste of meat and not want to eat it. I could never be a vegan or vegetarian or do kosher diets because I'm very picky with my food but I have a lot of admiration for the people who do these types of diets. That takes a lot of self restraint and dedication to make sure your not eating anything that goes against the diets.

my friend is vegan but not by choice. she has many health issues like she cant digest red meat, protiens from any meat or poultry make her incredibly sick, shes has major lactose issues, she is allergic to shellfish, the smell of fish makes her sick. the only non vegan thing she can eat is eggs but only if its prepared by her or her mom. we went to a restaurant one time and they have a whole seperate menu for vegan/vegetarians the problem was even tho she told the waiter about her allergies and other issues the cook did not listen. wen we got to the hospital we found out wat happened the veggies in wat she ordered were cooked in the same pan or watever as red meat. she throws up alot wen red meat enters her system even if its just the grease from it it doesnt matter. she threw up blood about 8 times that night. her parents complained and tried sueing the place but since the waiter was aware and many in the kitchen staff heard him tell the cook about her issues they just demanded the chef b fired and he was right on the spot. my friend said she wanted to go there again bc she believes in 2nd chances so we did and we had no issues. apparently the place hired 2 new chefs one being a chef that specializes in vegan/vegetarian meals so it became her new favorite restaurant bc she had no fears of any mistake happening again.

This reminds me of that Friends episode where Monica admitted to Phoebe she put meat (was it goose?) in a dish Monica made without Phoebe knowing it. Audiences found it hilarious but it really isn't.

Is this for real now? People ridiculing others just because they can't accept their choices or needs? If I eat sugar (carbs) - I will have a really bad condition (close to dead or even dead if it's too much) and it will trigger hours after eating it, because it takes time to be processed in my organism. So, is it worth killing me compared to giving someone you decided is "a whiny, picky bitch" a petty lesson? That's why I hardly can eat something I didn't personally bought and cooked. And they often lie on the label too. So I have to even produce it myself ???

Not to be rude, but are you an alien? Because you can’t eat carbs and talk about your organism.

Sounds like it was more of a family barbecue situation than a restaurant. The girl said it was her dad who gave someone the burger? That was how I interpreted it anyway.

Just remember, vegans are as diverse as any culture. We're not all pacifist. I would personally beat the hell out of someone that would do this to me. If I don't taste the difference, then you can feel how my vegan steel cap boots don't feel different.

Don't do this to anyone, ever. Carnivores think it's funny to bait vegetarians and vegans, for reasons that escape me. For all you meat eaters who think we're "ridiculous" you'd be appalled if you knew what some of us think about you. It's an incredible violation to do this EVER. The person who did this probably thinks slipping roofies in girls drinks is ok too... just "boys will be boys". Maybe they think slipping people alcohol is hilarious as well... This makes me absolutely sick.

I know it's not the same thing, but my friend when she was a kid, was at a church function, kids were running around while the adults mingled (it was the mid to late 70s, a completely different time) and there was a woman who had made peanut butter cookies. Insisted the kids have some, the one girl said she couldn't because she was allergic, and the lady got upset the kids wouldn't eat her cookies, so they did. And the girl died as a result because nut allergies are no joke.

My daughter has always been allergic to dairy. She was able to handle eating a little as a young adult and we thought she’d out grown the allergy. But it just got worse into adulthood. She has ingested dairy sometimes (example: McDonalds “egg” in an Egg McMuffin contains dairy) when eating out and told the food is dairy free. Even a little like this gives her a migraine that ruins her for 12-24 hours. Sometimes she can’t even work when that happens even after taking pain killers. People need to understand just because a food is not a problem for you doesn’t mean others can tolerate it. Be kind and spread kindness.

Dum, dairy is unnatural and harmful to any human if it's tolerated or not. There's no other mammalian creature in nature who would drink mother's milk after weaning, let alone the milk of another species, only humans are capable of such a cruel perversion. Milk protein, called casein, is very dissimilar from human protein and, together with strong, hard to digest proteins in meat and eggs, causes painful chronic inflammations in human body (such as arthritis), chronic diseases (such as diabetes - which can be not only prevented, but also reversed by plant-based diet), heart diseases/clogged arteries, failed organs, various cancers, and other maladies. Milk from animal mother does NOT makes your body good!!!!!

Yes, we all joke that vegans are annoying, and to be honest, it is when they get all preachy and act like I'm doing to hell because I'm not vegan like them. BUT, I would never do something like that to them on purpose. To be honest, I don't even care why someone doesn't eat (whatever food),just say you don't eat that, and I'll do my best. To switch things on purpose is just f****d.

abby, if vegans are preachy that's because they know what others do not want to know: - it's your own health (vegans do not create health and opioid crisis); - it's survival of our planet, your children's future is on the line; and its unconscionable suffering of innocent animals, the unforgivable, cruel way they die. Why is it so hard to understand it?

As someone who was vegan for 7 years n had to stop when I got really sick (unrelated) n then got even more sick when I had my first meal of meat.... I sincerely hope you stub your toe and smack your shin every morning for the rest of your life.... I literally had to be hospitalized because my body couldn't tolerate meat. I had to slowly wean it back into my diet after being hospitalized. I thought I could just go right to eating chicken, fish n pork.... but nope! I had one chicken taco n one pork carnita n I thought I was going to die. I have nothing against vegans nor meat eaters... but I do have a whole heap of animosity towards anyone who does s**t like this. This person got very lucky that this girl did not get sick. I don't involve myself in anyone's choices as long as elderly, animals, and children are not harmed. So be who you are and treat people the way you want to be treated. Feeding someone something without their consent is a crime and abuses human trust. So don't think it's funny to give someone meat when they don't eat meat. And vegans, just say you prefer "vegan choices" and not go into the whole "animals death righteous" rant. I accept your choice. Don't make a production out of ordering something. And be aware not all places cater those menu items. Don't make a fuss just don't eat there. Check ahead of time. Simple. Bad dad. He's lucky the person does sure for trust violating. And I'm sorry she liked meat over tofu. I'm not making fun of her. I'm sure it's happened before to vegans being slipped meat or dairy. Medical conditions do exist so please everyone just if you're being paid to give someone something they ask for on your menu, don't mess with their lives being a smart Alec.

I have chronic allergic syndrome and develop allergies, including food allergies, more easily than the average person. years ago I had odd food allergies beyond the typical ones, including wheat, corn, soy, spices and (believe it or not) lettuce. and I've had people who knew I was allergic to something sneak it into my food "to see what would happen" you shouldn't mess with someone else's food. you don't know what their reasons for not eating something are

My sister-in-law was raised vegan and she can't even eat fish or anything with meat, she tried though but got very sick so she just stopped trying. She doesn't hold a grudge against her father who was a doctor but, for example, if she'd be the one who would get that burger, I dunno, she might wind up in the ER.

This is a very serious issue and I agree with all commenters. Consent is important, and even if the person isn't made physically sick by the ruse, they will probably feel violated. It's such a gross thing to do, and Soleil's story made me sad, that only one person they worked with understood why they were upset. :( That said... I wanted to tell a related funny story. I'll put that in a comment on this comment...

So with that out of the way. :) A vegetarian friend of mine recently went to a restaurant in my city and ordered their veggie burger. Knowing she was vegetarian, they actually hesitated to give it to her: they said "A lot of people complain because our veggie burger tastes too much like meat. It's 100% vegetarian but it tastes a lot like meat and people freak out." I find that so funny, they've succeeded TOO well at making a burger out of veggies. And my friend ended up NOT having the burger, because she hasn't eaten meat in a long time and thought it would taste gross to her, maybe even make her sick. I don't know, maybe it's not that funny, I just found it really fascinating and a bit amusing. :)

Imagine all those people that think is funny being, unbeknownst to them, fed a dog meat burger by someone okay with eating dogs, just for shiggles. If they found out they wouldn't be like 'fair enough, I am a bit of a douche for having a taboo about eating dog'. I can assure people, however, that if someone hasn't eaten meat or other animal products for years, and then eats some, it will not make them ill. That's from personal experience, and the body doesn't know the difference. Herbivorous animals accidentally eat insects and even small vertebrates, on occasion, and it has no negative effect on them.

I have had the bad experience that it is not safe for me to eat minced meat in restaurants. I am allergic to pork and bad cramps are the least of the symptoms. Others can even die from it. Even when I ask whether the meat is really 100% beef, there is often pork in between, since mixed mince is cheaper. That's why I often prefer to order vegetarian or vegan dishes straight away. Therefore: No, it's not cool or funny to slip something into the food of someone who doesn't want to eat it.

My cousin is vegetarian and I have a lot of food allergies/sensitivity and every time we have family get togethers my cousin and I are normally just in the corner snacking on crackers or rolls unless one of us makes something the both of us will eat. Our family thinks we can just pick out the meat or whatever the issue is, completely disregarding the fact it's cooked together so it's "contaminated" by the meat or allergen. PS- as someone who is allergic to artificial sweeteners can we please just go back to using regular sugar to sweeten stuff? It's really not that bad for you in moderation and I'd like to enjoy some sweet stuff without possibility of death.

The server is a complete & utter assh*le. Where the hell does he get off thinking that's okay? My sister & her family are all vegan, which is totally respected by the rest of us. When we have family dinners we always make sure there are vegan options and NOT just salad. Spaghetti with Italian & vegan sausages on the side. Build your own Greek salad with the salami and feta on the side. At BBQ's we just make sure some of the burgers are veggie (or black bean, which is surprisingly tasty). Not hard AT ALL to accommodate. I worked with a woman who had gastric bypass surgery and could no longer digest certain foods, beef being one of them, but she was an idiot. She ate McDonalds all the time and would then spend up to an hour in the restroom - which meant no one else could use it that day (the smell was gag inducing). She was eventually fired for basically spending so many working hours in the bathroom, knowing it was something she could avoid.

Regardless of how you feel about someone's food choices, it is their choice and should be respected. If the dad was a recovering alcoholic and someone slipped him a drink, think how that would mess him up. Just treat people the way you would like to be treated.

I cannot stress enough, the lone star tick causes an allergy to meat. All mammal meat, Not just beef and pork. Serving someone real beef instead of a veggie burger could Kill them. Grilling chicken on the same grill with beef, etc, could also bring on a severe enough attack to take them to the hospital. Or also kill them. I have 2 friends with this. And global warming? At first I was hoping it was an accident and she quit being vegan then happy every after, but no purposely fooling someone like that is flat out wrong. She could have been allergic or it be for religious reasons. You should never force your views on others. I hope she was okay after the incident.

While I would never feed anyone anything I suspect might make them sick (I ask specifically about allergies before I invite someone), I'm not about to set myself on fire to keep others warm. If you eat at my house, you eat what's served. Nobody is forcing you to force yourself on others. If you prefer being difficult to conforming, by all means eat alone. Having someone else prepare your meal is by no means a right, and the entitlement of some people makes me THOROUGHLY disinclined to change that.

I take wafarin, so I have to avoid vitamin K. Wafarin is a blood thinner and vitamin K is it's antidote. It occurs in green leafy vegetables, blueberries, cranberries, asparagus, and all the other things I'd like to eat. Now imagine trying to order something if a cafe. The last time I did, someone helpfully tried to smuggle some spinich leaves into my sandwich by hidding them in the middle. When the server saw them in a little pile on the plate later, she said, "I thought that if you just tried them, you'd like them." I then explained to her the concept of blood clotting on my artificial heart valve. She threw up. I doubt she'll do it again.

I have food allergies that are life threatening and I carry an epi pen at all times. I am also on a medically restricted diet. I don't really want to be grilled about my medical history every time I go out to eat, it's embarrassing. I am very clear about what I can't have, I do my research about the menu of places I go and try to speak to the chef rather than servers as things may get lost or misunderstood if info is passed down the line. I always end up apologising for being difficult even though it's all beyond my control. I have had been ill after a meal previously which makes me even more wary. People need to stop acting like this; it's not big or clever... it could end up with you in jail on a manslaughter charge!

I'm an agnostic jew and I'm mostly kosher. I follow most of the rules, but I do it pretty loosely. I'm agnostic and I wouldn't be too surprised if there isn't a G-d, but I also I wouldn't be too surprised if there is G-d. I need more evidence on this front. I would on the other hand be surprised if an actually decent G-d who hopefully wants to fix the bigger problems in the world would really be spending their time caring whether my grape juice got blessed by a rabbi or my utensils are %100 kosher, but there's something nice about being part of a community and my family does so I do. I use the vegetarianism excuse as my way of getting out of pork and mixing of meat and milk. I've never really had a sense of smell so I think if someone gave me something I wouldn't be able to tell the difference. (I also have a wheat allergy, but I'd be able to tell for that one, since it makes me really nauseous and I usually vomit it right back up and so I know no-one has given wheat to me on purpose.)

I'm glad you posted this. Religious food doctine has always seemed completely ridiculous to me. I'm sure God has WAY bigger things on his mind then who eats what. A little bit like eating fish on Fridays as a Catholic - it's all man-made doctrine and, to me, it's completely ridiculous. A starving person will eat whatever they find and if that happens to be a starving Muslim who finds a big hunk of pork, I can guarantee they'll eat it and God won't care one bit!

Secretly, real hamburgers are made out of grass. That's what cows eat. They eat grass which contains calcium and carbon, As well as other basic materials found in grass. Vegan burger contains calcium and carbon as well as other basic materials found in soy and grass. The only difference between a vegan and another average human is that vegans are vegetarian, and humans eat vegetarians.

FYI, cows eat grass to nourished their OWN bodies, not yours Thomas!!! All that stuff - calcium, carbon and other basic materials - were already used by cows' bodies and what you get is "second handed stuff" which will NOT nourish your body; if it did, you would not get all those "age" related pains and diseases, which have nothing to do with your age - it only take 15 - 20 years before your body cannot take all that abuse any longer and gets ravaged by arthritis, diabetes, heart diseases, cancers, and other diseases. So it's not the same if you eat vegetables or vegetarians, Thomas. When you'll be sitting in your doctor's office, remember it.

Some cooks feel "if only you had my x, y, or z" you'd change the way you feel. But restaurants bare a responsibility. I used to go to this Italian joint walking distance from my job & get their meatballs. I asked a worker if it was beef. She said "lemme check" Came back & answered "yes". Their food was displayed in hot metal pans. I would get a little pesto pasta, cold Italian veggie mix, etc.. it was sold by weight. One day the owner was there. He asked if I wanted to try a certain dish. I said no, I don't eat pork. I continued by ordering my regular "go-to" dishes. He said "you don't eat pork eh? I was a little suspicious. All along, his meatballs were a blend of pork, beef, etc. I always had an uneasy feeling after consuming food there. But my vision was blurred after 2 cups of coffee , breakfast , more coffee, water &/or soda, a coworker baked goods, then his meatballs! It was a bit difficult to pinpoint. But all along. If/when I went to his restaurant- I felt crummy

My 14 year old grandson has been a vegetarian in a family of carnivores since he was 8. His dietary needs have always been met with acceptance and respect from every member of our family and friends. I just asked him what he thought about this - "I feel very sorry for her. I don’t think her father cares about her very much or he wouldn’t have done something that would hurt her so badly". From the mouths of babes.

Can your own blood cause an allergic reaction? That seems like hyperbole to me but if it is true it's horrifying

With a severe enough animal protein allergy yes, your blood could trigger an anaphylactic reaction since it does contain animal protein.

Niall, vegans (not vegetarians) are healthy till very old age, so yes, it must have magical property, and I don't know any religion which would acknowledged that.

Love how people rage when those who eat meat do this to vegetarians, but meanwhile vegans and vegetarians will pull the same reverse BS and barely anyone bats an eye. Moral of this is just don't ever eff with someone's food or drink. If you can't respect someone's choices, don't serve people food. Also it's illegal as eff to tamper with someone's food like that. It's crap like this that gives people trust issues.

This brings up the much broader issue about everything going on right now. So many people with an issue about a vegan getting meat because they made a choice. However, the choice to eat meat, not get vaccinated, not have CRT forced on children mean there needs to be legal intervention. One side of the discussion seems to only think you have a choice if its in line with their feelings.

Obviously it was disrespectful and he shouldn't have done it. I would never do such a thing. But nevertheless, the fact that she said that it was the best veggie burger she ever had is really funny. It's evident that she likes meat a lot and she would prefere eating meat if she doesn't know it's meat.

In countries where people are literally starving to death (read any north Korean memoir) none of this is a thing. Every kid in usa should have to read a north Korean memoir from an escaped refugee and prioritize why the rest of the world ignores this human horror

When will vegans get their act together and eat healthy vegan food? Instead of super-processed fake meat, and super-processed imitations of bad 'meat' like sausages? Just a thought. As a small consequence, this kind of sick tricking wouldn't be as practical anymore.

I was vegetarian for 23 years. I'm not now, but I also eat very little meat. I don't care who you are, or why you eat what you do, it is Your choice, or decision, and Nobody has the right to substitute other foods or dictate what is right for you. Only you.

Even if its not an allergy people shouldnt do this, it could be their religion or farm animals might be some people’s favourite animal and it would be very upsetting to eat them, people who like dogs or cats would be horrified if they were tricked into eating dog or cat meat so please dont do this 😞

All of them could end up having food laced with the food they cannot - or don't want to - eat. Why would anyone do this?

That's a really shitty thing to do. Obviously this broad thinks it's just as funny as her f****d up Dad does. If someone chooses not to eat meat, it's usually NOT because of the taste. Crazy how people's lifestyles can make others so uncomfortable. Frail masculinity right there....

If some restaurant feeds me real dairy even though I very cautiously ask for the vegan alternative it's 100% their problem to deal with the nightmare it will leave in their bathroom 20 minutes later. Don't f*** around with other people's food.

You just don't f*ck with people's food...period!!! That's just an a-hole move no matter how you look at it! If you work in the food industry in any facet people are paying good money for your service and therefore you give them what they ask for it's that simple.

To be honest, I don't even care why someone doesn't eat (whatever food),just say you don't eat that, and I'll do my best. abby, if vegans are preachy that's because they know what others do not want to know: - it's your own health (vegans do not create health and opioid crisis); - it's survival of our planet, your children's future is on the line; and its unconscionable suffering of innocent animals, the unforgivable, cruel way they die.

Reminds me of restaurants that have "vegetarian, fish and meat options"... erm, when did fish get declassified from being "meat"? Odd. I think tricking anyone in the way the OP did is abhorrent. It's not for anyone to decide what another person chooses to eat or not...

"Carnivores vs vegans is an age-old conflict". In the animal kingdom in it's globality, yes. But not within the human species. There is no "carnivore" human. We, by default, are omnivore.

I was a restaurant cook for 30 years. I made fun of vegans constantly. I was always annoyed by food trends, fad diets and the weird requests of picky eaters. And I was always careful about food requests. You can make people seriously ill or possibly kill people by messing with their food.

He didn't do this to his daughter. His daughter just is who told the story.

Can your own blood cause an allergic reaction? That seems like hyperbole to me but if it is true it's horrifying

With a severe enough animal protein allergy yes, your blood could trigger an anaphylactic reaction since it does contain animal protein.

If you choose not to eat meat for ethical or medical reasons; fair enough. But it's because you believe it has magical properties, then I will never take you seriously.

What? No. What a person chooses to eat doesn't affect others directly, unlike your other "examples". Nice regressive attitude, dumbass.

No it's not funny but it is also absolute bollocks that a vegan will get sick if they eat meat unknowingly.

No it's not. If your body isn't used to it, it could make you very sick.

Yep nobody should care about anyone else’s human rights if North Korea is still under a dictatorship. /s God you people are so dumb, and so widespread.

When will vegans get their act together and eat healthy vegan food? Instead of super-processed fake meat, and super-processed imitations of bad 'meat' like sausages? Just a thought. As a small consequence, this kind of sick tricking wouldn't be as practical anymore.

I've never understood why, if you choose to be vegan for ethical reasons, you'd want to eat stuff that is "like meat". I certainly couldn't do that.
