Person Starts A Debate Online After Their Vegan Coworker Asks Them To Eat Burger Outside
We all know—we must eat to survive—but in many cases, we are able to choose a certain practice, philosophy, lifestyle, or diet to fulfill our needs. When mingling with different people, it often comes down to the co-existence of individual opinions, tolerance, and/or social decisions. Vegans and meat-eaters share many public spaces which, naturally, can cause some social debates around the topic of food and occasionally even escalate to conflicts.
Reddit user throwaway1035782 decided to share a story and asked the online community for help to find out whether to feel guilty or not after being told off for eating a hamburger in the break room while a vegan colleague was present. Are you a vegan or a meat-eater and what you would have done in a similar situation?
More info: Reddit
A Reddit user asked the online community how to feel about the fact that a fellow colleague who’s vegan asked them to eat a hamburger outside

The user throwaway1035782 posted a story on popular subreddit AITAH of what occurred in the break room involving a vegan coworker. Although the author behind the post and the vegan colleague Carla (the name was changed but the user) normally get along, what happened in the break room escalated into an uncomfortable situation. This story could very well make us question our boundaries or ability to coexist with people who have different eating choices: in particular, vegans and carnivores. Where is the boundary and should there be one between the two groups and how they treat each other’s eating habits?
The whole story was posted on a popular subreddit that has 30.2k followers
As the Reddit user highlighted, Carla is a vegan and although she does tell everyone she’s a vegan, they have worked together for several years and it has never come across as her being pushy about veganism.
Although one day in the break room, when she noticed her coworker coming back from a fast food burger place with the purchased lunch, Carla suggested that they eat it outside despite the fact that they live in a cold and snowy state.
After the incident, throwaway1035782 had some thoughts and actually decided to ask the people online on AITAH, which has 2.6m followers, what their thoughts are on the situation. The post itself received 7.9k upvotes and 1.5k comments to date. However big or small the incident itself was, it sparked quite a few responses and debates among vegans and meat-eaters about how situations like this should be handled at work and in public spaces in general.
Let us know in the comments below if you have ever found yourself in a similar situation or how throwaway1035782 should have actually handled the situation and the feelings involved.
And here is how other users expressed their opinions about the story

That's what I was thinking, why couldn't the vegan eat outside....
Load More Replies...Oddly enough, the whole point of "compromise" that was presented by the third party indicates there were two options to compromise between. Pretty sure I only read "if you want to eat, gtfo and eat somewhere else". Vegan-lady could have just as easily "compromised" and walked outside, gone down the street to the local bank, stood in line, applied for a small business loan, bought a storefront, started a business, and minded it.
I'm glad she didn't move outside. That lady chose to vegan and so should respect those who don't.
she could have avoided the situation by going outside because she is the one who cant handle it and he was minding his own business and being nice while she was being bossy and acting like she owned him/her
Load More Replies...Militant vegans are a pain in the a**e and give vegans and vegetarians a bad name. Most aren't but you get twats like this that wind people up. I honestly think they don't do it for ethics, they just like being holier than though and given half a chance would devour a steak if they thought they could get away with it.
I have been vegetarian fro about 45-6 years now, and don't care what you eat as long as you don't shove it down *my* throat, thanks so much! I don't care if I'm holier, healthier, etc. It's my food, my body, my choice, and your body/your choice/your food. And, in 40-plus years, I have never once craved a steak. Nor a burger. I married a carnivore. He went vegetarian on his own ------ which still shocks me, frankly! He did love a bacon-burger! ---- and that's fine. He goes back to meat, that's fine. I cooked it for him. I hated the smell, it turned my stomach, but.... he can't stand to eat half the veg I think are great. *shrug* So for me, this vegan person was being too precious-princessy, but she doesn't represent us all, thankfully. Eat your eats. Signed, lifelong veg-head.
Load More Replies...Not a vegan but the smell of burgers makes my stomach turn. I don't ask people to not eat them around me. I step away. Simple as that.
For the workplace, I'd usually refrain from telling someone to step outside to eat. The possible exception would be food that smells bad to pretty much everyone (hot tuna with raw onions and peanut butter and durian fruit). On the other hand, I turn down invitations to meat-heavy restaurants - my colleagues know I eat very little meat and they're not offended. Off they go, and I'll join them another time when they go to a different resto.
Load More Replies...Definitely not the a*****e! I am a vegan myself but it is absolutely none of my business what other people eat or not. You do you! I could understand that she would not want you to eat food with a strong smell in your office for example, where she would be forced to stay in order to do her work, however, in the break room this is absolutely fine. She can leave whenever she likes if the smell makes her feel sick. On another note, this might have been totally unrelated - maybe she had a bad day herself and just wanted some attention and special treatment...
Which she does by creating trouble for someone else? Yeah... no.

Load More Replies...Buddhist-vegan 35+ years here to throw in my two cents'. First, what a lot of people don't understand about vegans is that we are not secretly yearning to eat animal carcasses. Once you get meat out of your system, it's really disgusting. The smell is horrible. (I was raised on a meat heavy American diet.) Second, I can understand why the vegan in this story didn't like the smell, but it happened in the office, not in a private home. In my home, I do not welcome meat, but elsewhere, if I don't like the smell, I leave. I don't preach or order others around, because that's not my position. If you don't like the smell, just pick up your food and go somewhere else to eat in peace. Don't fuss.
What I do understand is this: the nice, polite, poor burger - man is telling the story. I would also love to hear from that nasty, ruthless vegan.

I get that the Vegan said that it makes her feel sick, but it’s the break room, it doesn’t bother anyone else, only you, so you are the one who should move. I would prefer is people weren’t publicly affectionate but it won’t kill me and I can just avert my eyes.
i hate when people use the microwave to eat their tuna or salmon. it make ALL the breakroom stink. but i don't ask them to not do that. Lot of vegan just want to make a scene and make themself look like they're the victim. so f**k'em! you'll send what? 10-20 people outside just because you say it makes you feel bad?
Oh no kjorn, vegans are not victims - vegans have the healthy bodies, strong bones, no chronic pains and diseases; we do not cause pain and suffering to any sentient being, we do not kill the earth. There's only one bad thing: we have to live on polluted, dying planet with all of you smart, caring folks. P.S. Thank you for f**king me.
Load More Replies...I'm vegan and can't stand the smell of meat and seeing it makes me sad but the person that is being bothered should be the one that leaves. I would have left in this situation.
Yes, Yup Nope, but where to go? We can't live on another planet.
Load More Replies...As a vegan myself, I would NEVER ask someone to move! It doesn't bother me what other people eat or if they eat it infront of me because we are all different and unique and have the freedom to do as we please. If I couldn't stand the smell of something, I would get off my own behind and move somewhere else! Jesus, the entitlement of some people just absouletly kills me lately!
I eat very little meat and did a one year vegetarian experiment, I kept having people annoying me to eat some meat, so it goes both ways. But about the burger, he can eat it where he wants... Vegan Karen can go freeze outside if she doesn't like it.
I lean vegetarian and offer others my food but would never assume to force it on them. I believe it's very wrong to make anyone feel guilty for eating. Starvation is very real in this world. Gratitude is the only attitude to take around food.
By a long shot. She gave a demand, then said “compromise and do this”, that’s not a compromise lol, that’s a demand that you’re trying to make polite
Load More Replies...I bet she's been vegan for 5 minutes. I've never eaten meat, my choice and I'd tell her to f**k right off. It's a shared space, not hers.
I’m a vegetarian & hate the sight of meat. When I am in a public space you just ignore it.
Vegetarian here I think you're a-ok (presuming you weren't rude about it) Except for Dorian/jack-fruit, it doesn't seem reasonable to tell people what to eat in public spaces
Yoel, but it is reasonable, even vital, to tell people what to eat on this planet!!!!!! Do you love your children and grandchildren? I do mine.
Load More Replies...I am vegan and I find it really difficult to see meat and smell foods like burgers - however it is my choice so I cannot expect other people to not eat these foods. I would have taken myself away from the area. X
What the heck!! It is people like this who give vegans a bad name. (I am a full fleshed carnivore by the way)
How can you tell someone’s a vegan? You don’t have to—they tell everyone they meet.
Why not, Ron? They have a lot to be proud of!!!
Load More Replies...Wow, I cannot imagine having the gall. The smell of a fast-food hamburger would absolutely make me feel sick as well...so I would leave. I would not ask someone else to interrupt their meal just because I don't like the smell. I'd probably be pissed about it tbh, but I wouldn't be a jerk either.
Life is about tolerance and maturity. Not everyone is going to be like you, whoever you are. As a 40 year vegetarian from an all omnivore family, you learn to appreciate and love the extremely personal choices you've all made.
Talking about tolerance, it's time for human species to tolerate our planet and ALL life it supports, what about that?
Load More Replies...Outside of what the law requires, accommodating someone with special needs (needs that are outside the norm in society) are a courtesy. The onus for accommodation is on the person that needs the relief. Obviously, severity of the problem (fatal allergy) or the difficulty of self accommodation relative to the other party are factors, but this is clearly not that kind of case.
Allergies should certainly be accommodated. Self-imposed restrictions can be with compromises from both sides. For example, before the pandemic, our office would order all-dressed and vegetarian pizzas. The lone vegan couldn't eat either one, but she could certainly join us in the lunch room with her own food. Like many of the vegetarians and vegans in these comments, she was easy on the non-vegans. She even bought a non-vegan cake for her boyfriend.
Load More Replies...I’m gluten sensitive, but don’t demand that no one eat anything containing gluten around me. I don’t even demand gluten-free food at office parties or meetings, and keep GF snacks at my desk for just such occasions. If I were the vegan with the food odor sensitivity in this situation, I would’ve just said Bon Apetit to the burger eater, and eaten my own food at a different time or in a different place. Because it’s not their problem, it’s my problem.
Smoking? Go outside. Eating? Stay inside. I know a vegan, who gets sick from the smell of meat (that's why she is vegan). She would go outside herself. I think it depends on the situation too. In a room full of vegans, it would be polite for the meat eater to go outside (if anyone dislikes the smell). In a room full of meat eaters, the vegan can go outside.
Really Pascale, how did you arrived to this concrete conclusion? Do you believe everything you read on social media?

Load More Replies...Hey, it's the break room, and it's the only place to eat! It would a different story if you were sitting at your desk and eating tuna or shrimp and others had no choice but to put up with the stink. It's not her private break room. But let's be honest: it isn't really about the smell. It's that your eating habits don't align with her own ethics/convictions. Would a religious person who doesn't eat pork be justified in asking you to eat it elsewhere? No.
Tell Carla to shove it up her ass and leave if it "bothers" her then chew loudly with your mouth open . NOMNOMNOM!! 😬
that's dumb. I'm vegan but I don't force it on anyone and I don't expect them to force their habits on me. I wasn't always vegan, and vegans like the one in this story give us all a bad name.
Frankly, I'm getting a little bit fed up with vegans. I don't try to get them to eat meat, so why should they try to force me not to. Mind your own damned business!
Good Lana. Vegans have to share the planet with you. They are minding their own damned business... and that of your children/grandchildren. Why do you believe that this story even happen? There was no other meat eating person in that room?
Load More Replies...The absolute nerve of the person! They are not vegan for health. They are vegan to shove it in the faces of everyone and demand rights and privileges they would never extend to anyone else. Time to end this craze of holier than thou crap.
marianne eliza, many are not vegas for their own health, they are vegans for the health of our devastated planet and to spare poor, innocent, unconscionably tortured, immensely suffering animals. Go ahed, hate them.
Load More Replies...I think fish smell is fairly universal here for being a no-no in the break room, but I could ignore it or leave. How I feel about the fish smell is how she feels for the burger. That said, it is her problem, not the eaters. Pretty soon everything will be off limits. Draw the line - a very pungent smell that a LOT of people dislike, sure, leave rhe tuna home.
I'm a Muslim and I have dietary restrictions but I have spent my entire life eating along with my non Muslim classmates, schoolmates, friends, family, neighbours and strangers in general. It doesn't offend me and it doesn't affect me in any way and as long as our plates aren't touching, which they never do, there isn't a problem and I don't make it into one. Sounds like this vegan person is just making a mountain out of molehill; she shouldn't get special consideration just because she is vegan.
Is she or isn't she, Melia. She is not telling the story.

Having lived with a vegetarian who would complain endlessly about me cooking or eating meat in the same building as them, I have no sympathy.
Well, it's a common break room, it's not your property so you can't ask people to leave because you don't like the smell of their food. I had a coworker who always had lunch that smelled like cat food, but I didn't ask her to go eat outside because she had as many rights to this room as me.
I feel offended and sick by people eating broccoli. It reminds me of my mother forcing me to eat broccoli as a child. So maybe vegans should not eat broccoli at work.
Cuervo, your mother was right, so do yourself a favor, eat broccoli..... everywhere.

I'm a vegetarian, and I would NEVER do this. If you're that triggered by meat, there's something wrong with you. Also, doesn't everyone think meat smells amazing? Isn't that human instinct?
It is very much human instinct. We evolved as omnivores. But we have also evolved to make choices in our diets. And that Has to be an individual choice for each of us. Not dictated to us by someone else.
Load More Replies...I hate these kind of articles. So there's one vegan person who is a jerk. It's not noteworthy. I've worked with people who can't stand the smell of popcorn or fish cooked In a communal microwave.

Load More Replies...I once had an office Christmas party that was moved to a vegan restaurant because there was a new hire that was vegan. I think it was the worst vegan restaurant ever. They made asian food that also had faux meat. Not tofu, like vegan Chinese sausage. They were also out of 80% of the listed alcohol on their menu. They would bring dishes out only one at a time to a party of over 12 people. So either eat vegan faux meat dishes cold or start eating when they gave you the dish. If that ever happens again, I will skip the party. It is important to respect peoples choices but not then force that choice on other people.
Ray, there are many great vegan restaurants today or restaurants which offer Beyond meat, or Impossible burger, both great tasting - same taste like meat, minus all those inflammations and diseases.
Load More Replies...Roughly 3 percent of the US population is vegan, and omnivores are supposed to genuflect to them? I don't think so. Also.... You know how to tell when someone is a vegan? Don't worry.... they'll tell you. :<D
Honestly, if she thinks it is so gross, why doesn't she eat outside.
The vegan is a thousand percent wrong. Eat up, everyone. Don't be bullied.
I have a non-Jewish friend who works for the Jewish center here. They keep a kosher kitchen. The only thing they asked of her was to bring in her own pans if she would be cooking and to keep her food in the separate refrigerator. They even supplied paper plates, etc. Never a word about her not eating her food in the kosher kitchen, just not cooking it there. If they can do that and keep peace, vegans have no place demanding everything they don't like being kept away from them.
Judith our planet, and ALL life it supports, has right to ask humans to adopt such a diet and lifestyle which are not destroying it. If we won't take care of nature, nature will take care of us. Now, why vegans have to be punished too????

I hate the smell of coffee: it makes my stomach churn. So I avoid break rooms in the morning...
Q How do you find out if someone is vegan? A Don't worry, they'll tell you.
I’m a vegan and I would never think to tell someone where to eat their lunch in a public venue and or at work. Yes if there is someone with a peanut allergy then you don’t eat peanuts at work knowing it can KILL them and it’s not a CHOICE like being vegan is. She’s a b****. People reek of perfume at work and we don’t demand they shower it off. Unless it’s an co firmed deadly allergy, this is not an offense. She’s wrong. And sounds like a handful (can’t imagine her SO dealing with her...)
BabaBizzle, who knows who she is. Only that "poor" guy is telling the story. I find it peculiar that no other person in that break room was eating meat, only this poor fellow.
Load More Replies...There are two sides to every story, like the user said, "She's never really been pushy" maybe there is something in the burger that she is allergic to, or something else. I mean she just randomly one day really wanted you to eat outside? That's a little sus.
I had the opposite problem. I had vegan and vegetarian co-workers that ate at their desks (we all did because the break room was too small). Their food smelled disgusting and I had to wait till the smell dissipated before I could eat my lunch. I would never have asked them not to eat their meals around me.
Leaving a room to eat might be applicable if it is extremely strong-smelling food.
We all know this isn't how anyone should act but I feel like sharing things like this, especially on a website with a tendency to share a lot of anti-vegan content, just gives the impression that most or many vegans are like that, and it just isn't the case.
you got the burger without knowing it would cause discomfort. NTA. a compromise could be that she let you eat now and next time you guys synchronize when somebody eats something that gives a lot of odor.
Good idea, elStiJneriNo, but that would not make a nice, juicy story!!!!

This is a sign of a mental disorder. The sense of smell is designed to sense rapidly changing scents, such a reaction is stuck in the brain!
If someone whipped out a stinking mess of entrails in the break room, I bet EVERYONE would freak. I would gag at the presence of such a cooked hunk of beautiful cow, but I'd just eat lunch in my car to escape it.
I'm sorry but she was wrong to ask YOU to go outside and eat, she should of removed herself, Also just because YOU don't eat meat does not mean that the smell will make you sick ! she was just saying that to try to get her way! the break room is for EVERYONE! if you don't like something someone else is eating then you should be the one to remove yourself, and the "BOSS" was wrong she should of reprimanded the complainer not the one who also had the right to sit down and enjoy her lunch! she is NOT ENTITLED!
Tammy, isn't it funny that any other person in the break room was not eating meat? Who is telling the story?
Load More Replies...Vegan is unnatural which is best illustrated by vegan 'meat' products. I mean seriously?
I am allergic to fish and all seafoods, but the rest of my family is not. When I was a senior in high school, my family went to visit my dad's sister and her family in Arkansas. They decided to fry fish, yet I couldn't deal with the odor, so my mom and I decided I would stay in our room to avoid the smell. I stayed in our room and no one got their feelings hurt. This vegan should have left the room if the smell was bothering her. Also complaining to the boss sounds like 3rd grade behavior.

I have a physical disability called VCD, vocal cord dysfunction. Under certain circumstances (like a person smoking near me), my vocal cords close, thus cutting off my air supply. The smell of strong perfume, coffee, cig smoke, and others cause the VCD to kick in. But I try to use situational awareness. If the break room is also a smoking zone, I’ll ask the manager for an optional place to eat. Which is what I think the vegan in this case should have done.
Vegans are always demanding you including vegan dishes at weddings and dinner parties, but they never include meat dishes at theirs. I don’t think vegans are nothing more than entitled hypocrites.
Oh, my word. I was vegetarian for 23 years. I had people try to tell me that I should eat meat. But even then I really hated vegans. So entitled. Now I have never forced my diet on anyone else. Or my preferences. To each there own. But here is another reason to dislike vegans. They also include eggs. I get it, I have hens so that I know my eggs come from birds that are not crammed into little cages. Their coop is for laying their eggs and protection from predators at night. I once suggested, to a pair of vegans, that they could eat eggs, that were raised free range, because the hens were going to lay eggs everyday, and with no rooster involved, these eggs are a gift to their caregiver. They agreed with this but said, in all seriousness, that if they ate eggs at home, they might forget, and eat eggs in a restaurant that might not be free range. As I said above I was vegetarian for 23yesrs, and never once when I went out did I forget that I didnt eat meat.
Yeah, totally. Come on, are believable lies really asked too much?

Load More Replies...NTA. I have multiple food allergies and can get a reaction to the smell of certain food, fish and nuts mainly, which is why a shared dining room like at a work place is not my favourite thing... It sucks big time getting an allergic reaction just because people eat nuts or candy with nuts. Nougat is a nightmare, that smell is both nasty and makes my eyes itch ALOT. However, I'd never ever ask someone to eat outside (in the snow) because of that! I would rather remove myself, try to keep maximum distance and if the weather is nice I'll happily eat outside. I have the problem, so I'll adapt. That's my take on it and the vegan lady in the story here should either get used to the smell of meat or keep a distance and eat somewhere else.
Yeah, vegan chick needs to get over herself, mind her own buisness and STFU. There are vegan foods that are just as bad smelling, if not worse. My wife cooked up some vegan stuff one night that smelled worse than a skunks b******e.
What was your wife making? Cabbage in durian fruit puree? I'm told that durian fruit does smell worse than a skunk's batootie (or whatever you were trying to write) and cabbage is not much better.

Ms. Vegan has a lot of nerve. The audacity. She sounds like the type that would force veganism on her dog or cat. She should have been the one to go elsewhere to eat.
And where does it state she gets nauseous of the smell because she is vegan? What is if is just because it is a strong smell? I think it's not social to bring strong scented food in a place that is shared with others. (Like loads of garlic or fish). If the food is sold there, ok. But not if it is brought in. I don't know how strong the scent of this food is. If she said it the way it was presented, then Carla was wrong. She could have asked, seek compromise herself. But she didn't...
the OP said she said it. but I'm guessing it wasn't strongly-smelling, and more that... the OP's vegan is a vegan who choses to be vegan for moral/ethical reasons rather than simply not liking burger... and the burger smelled good.
Load More Replies...I'm not nice enough to be polite about it. I would simply say, "F you," and then ignore the vegan, unless, of course, if the vegan is a six foot eight, three hundred pound body builder, in which case I would say, "Yes, sir, I'm leaving now."😜
I would reply that if she eat her salad outside next time you go outside with your burger. Should have trolled her a bit saying that you are sick of vegetables and how that salad must have suffered being ripped from soil. But in all seriousness you behaved properly to situation. I would have got a bit mad if someone asks me to do that. What a sick world we live in everyone have his own safe space and is offended by virtually anything. F**k her seriously!

I wonder how many people would react comletely differently if it was a situation between a person eating a very smelly fish and another meat-eater put off by that smell. I think it really just comes down to how that burger actually smelled... And judging from the description of the situation it was very smelly. Same way as you should not warm up fish dishes in the office microwave (oh the stink), you shouldn't get other strongly smelling things there too. It being a shared space doesn't mean you get to invade it just because you feel like eating something stinky today.
That was not called for. I have had friends and family members who are vegan. In fact, I keep a set of plates and cookware at my house for a friend so they can make their vegan meal when they eat with us. One night we decided to give the vegan thing a try and did a whole dinner out of it. They don't typically push it on us and he is always appreciative I have everything for him. I did date someone once who was a jerk about it. But a majority of vegetarians and vegans are not rude about me eating meat.

Yeah... no.
Load More Replies...@PietPuk - "Why didn't the vegan eat outside?" . Because they might get eaten by marauding carnivores.. like they do in the wild

There was no other meat eating person in that room?

marianne eliza, many are not vegas for their own health, they are vegans for the health of our devastated planet and to spare poor, innocent, unconscionably tortured, immensely suffering animals.

F**k her seriously!
..i wonder, what if it was the other way arround? What if something She eat smell bad and the coworker asked her to eat outside, what then? complain about discrimination?(especially if it was a man)
