Kid Asks How To Get Vaccinated Without Parents’ Consent, And Replies Show How Messed Up Our Society Is

The message is getting through! Well, to the next generation at least. While an entirely preventable breakout of measles is occurring in Washington state as we speak, prompting the governor to declare a public health emergency, the children of today’s irresponsible parents are taking matters into their own hands and figuring out how to get vaccinated without needing parental consent. One particularly bright 15-year-old Redditor posted on the subreddit r/legaladvice, looking for solutions to his problem. Showing a considerable maturity and willingness to do his research, his question regarding the vaccines he is able to get without his mother’s blessing sparked an eye-opening discussion, bringing to light important issues that are essential reading for any unvaccinated under 18-year-olds out there.

We realize that have covered this topic extensively of late. However, measles outbreaks in 2019 America are just not acceptable and show that there is still work to be done. This kind of initiative from the younger generation gives us hope that there are more sensible, grounded adults and parents to come!

Danny spoke to Bored Panda about his efforts to get immunized. “I’ve tried to have conversations with my mom about vaccinations,” he told us. “My attempts were often conversations with me bringing a website or a scientific study to show her. Often it concluded with my mom saying that she would do some more research later. We both understand each other’s views and respect them, we are able to have good and open discussions. However, it honestly came down to just being persistent enough so that at the last doctor’s checkup I had several months ago, at the end of it I kept nagging my mom about it and asked the doctor to talk about vaccine risks and safety. We convinced my mom to let me get a tetanus and polio shot. Since then I haven’t had any other shots, and my younger siblings don’t have any vaccinations at all.”

“My mom has been anti-vaccine, and my dad does not have a strong opinion on this, as far as I know, he just supports my mom. Both my parents have been vaccinated, however, not in this country. It’s highly likely that this experience is a major factor in the decision to not vaccinate. The toughest aspect to understand, and it’s incredibly important to acknowledge it, is that their decision is made with good intention and my best health and safety in mind. My mom and dad are not doing this with malicious intent, in fact, it’s quite the opposite, they want the best for me. However, that decision, in my opinion, was not properly researched/informed. The topic then transitions to the question, “Who is responsible?” Are my parents at fault for not thoroughly researching the topic? Or is it the sensationalist websites and media that post for clicks by publishing false and controversial claims? Is the educational infrastructure in the US at fault for not teaching students how to differentiate from false information and facts, for not thoroughly teaching how to conduct research and what sources to trust? Is it the homeopathic industry that is at fault? It makes billions of dollars with extreme profit margins, it has its own lobby organizations and fights its enemies as hard as it can. The belief in homeopathy correlates with skepticism about vaccinations, and in reality, a lot of money is on the line – globally the market is expected to reach over 17 billion by 2024. The best thing to do in this case is to put stricter enforcement on vaccination, possibly going even as far as making it mandatory unless exempted by a doctor for health-related reasons. Loosening laws on the requirement for parental consent in these types of situations.”

Here in Finland children and teenagers can get a vaccinations even if the parents do not approve them. Same thing is also with the birth control and abortions - an underaged person can get those without the parent knowing about it. That is because some religious parents are a health hazard for the child by not allowing those.

This should be the law everywhere. Needing consent from parents for such important things until 18 is like treating the kids as if they're the parents' property.

They should at the very least change the law to one where minors do NOT need parental consent for vaccination should they be actively requesting it.

This. Or they can lower the bar to a younger age limit. Even amongst 12 year olds there are bright kids who care about serious topics and get actively informed about it too.

North Dakota and Iowa have leaner laws. Kid just needs to take a road trip. In our state, we have a clinic called WHAT that is just for teens and administers health treatment options without parental consent. I think every state should have one.

Now imagine a 15 year old would face a serious penalty for forging a signature that would enable him or her to escape what essential is parently negligence, if not abuse. Legally this makes sense, morally is it so far out of question...

Unfortunately, that last bit of advice is only correct in some places. I feel my kids are mature enough to go to a general medical appointment without having to be embarrassed by mommy's presence, but facilities here will absolutely not see a minor under 18 without the parent present. That means I can't schedule overlapping appointments for my four kids at the same facility - they have to go one after the other instead. It also means that kids who are abused have no opportunity to say so to their doctor without immediate fear of retribution.

My country is super run down in my views, but we don't seem to have such anti-vaccine moods going around. Odd. Perhaps it's because the most important vaccines are mandatory. Anyway, I think some really important law changes should be made where these poor peers of mine live. True, most teens have proven trough and trough they are incapable of making good decisions and thus the laws, requiring a parent/guardian to make some important decisions for them, but in cases like those, where the roles are reversed(parent are the immature ones) these laws can be truly harmful. And because people are slowly becoming dumber and dumber, such cases will occur more and more often. The solution is to simply make certain vaccines mandatory everywhere. If you don't vaccinate yourself or your children-a heavy fine. People who are incapable of making mature decisions should be deprived of their right to decide about such important matters, especially if they concern others.

I agree. But I think the problem is that there are heaps of politicians who also just as immature about those issues, and on top of it only concerned with votes and public approval... So if there's enough people who are against vaccines, there will be plenty of politicians who also are, and plenty who don't give a s**t and will agree with those people in order to get more votes from them.

It depends on which of the U.S. states you live in. Because of the whole split between Federal and State laws, each state creates and enforces its own laws on things such as education, marriage and family law, property, health care, etc.... So in conservative and/or religious states, the laws regarding abortion can be very restrictive. In some of those states, teenagers do not have the right to abortion (or sexual health care in general) without parental consent or a judicial bypass (where a judge decides whether or no a teen can have an abortion after their parents have refused to give permission.) States such as New York allow teens to access medical care (including abortions) without parental knowledge or consent (as a matter of safe-guarding a child's interests if a parent objects to certain services.)

I caution you greatly about forging a parent's signature, I did this in high school, got in line for the flu shot, was given the flu shot and was found in the girls washroom unconscious and unresponsive, transported to hospital by ambulance. Turns out my father was not antivax, he had deliberately not signed for the vaccination because I was allergic to the proteins the vaccine was suspended in, I thought he forgot to sign and I fixed it and it could have killed me.

Refusing to vaccinate your child without sound medical reason is utterly irresponsible. Here in the UK, 16/17 are considered competent enough to consent to their own medical treatment and though they are advise to involve family in the decision making process, they don't have to if it is felt doing so would cause them harm. And even below the age of 16, if a young person is considered 'Gilick competent' they can receive medical treatment such as vaccines without parental consent.

Danny: Go right ahead and forge your parents’ signatures, both if necessary. The likelihood of being caught is almost nil, and you’ll be protected against disease. And if you are caught, society as a whole will benefit from the attendant publicity because the attendant publicity which will blow anti-vaxxers out of the water. You almost certainly won’t be punished for trying to protect yourself, especially since it would NOT be a serious crime, as it harmed no one. The media will be all over the story of a minor being prosecuted for protecting himself from adult stupidity, and it’s hard to believe that any judge—should the case actually go to court—doing more than telling you to not do it again.

Hey I learned what it is. There's this thing vaccines can cause that does indeed share its name with autism, because when the term was created, people thought it was the same thing as autism. Basically there's a chance you get it, and it halts your brain from learning? You can't ever become smarter. So if a tiny little baby gets this thing (that is NOT!!! autism) their bodies will grow up, but never their minds!

The USA has the world´s most expensive health care and in a large part that is due to the astronomical damages medical professionals can be made to pay if sued for malpractice, and the hefty insurance policies they pay. This is probably the one and only reason for the need for the signature of the guardian. This law protects the health of the Doctor´s pocket, it does not give a damn about the health of the children. Universal Healthcare is a sign of progress and democracy. The lack of it, well, it is backward to say the least.

It sounds like, if you are living appart from your parents, regardless of the duration, you don't require their consent. Ask a sympathetic friend to let you crash on his counch and move out. Consent to vaccinations yourself. Once vaccinated, decide whether or not to return home. Alternatively, start reality therapy on your parents: 1) carry hand sanitiser with you and wear a face mask everywhere. 2) Wear a shirt saying "My parents won't consent to vaccination, but I don't want to die." 3)In public places, carry a protest sign saying "Not vaccinated? Neither am I. Please maintain a minimum distance of 6 yards.* *Also applies to the immunocompromised." 4)Quiz your siblings daily on whether they have been exposed to anyone sick. Issue them their own face masks and hand sanitiser, and teach them how to use them.

Actually I think you'll find that the guy claiming vaccines cause autism openly admitted that he completely made that "fact" up, and further studies have agreed that there's no correlation. There are more people with autism now because we know more about it and can more easily recognize it in people who have it. There's a similar information boom going on with lots of medical conditions, thanks to the internet and medical research.

There is a rise in Autism cases because it is being more recognised and milder sympoms noted that would have attracted little attention in many years ago. As a child there were a number of kids in my classes - 1960's/70's who were just that bit "odd" - even some high achievers who would definitely have been diagnosed as on the Autistic Spectrum today.. There were not the Child Development/Behavioural Services back then. Autism didn't exist as a term until after 1910. Previously kids were labelled, slow, simpletons, defective, r******d, even idiots and "mentally handicapped". In the last decades more and more slight behavioural anomalities have been attributed to Ausistic Spectrum, some so slight they would have gone un-noticed even 50years ago - put down as "quirks".

Congrats, you now have natural antibodies made by your very own immune system and no neurotoxins, heavy metals or other untested chemicals in your body that will only express themselves in 40 years. If you had Ebola I'd say you should have got a vaccinated. But you don't. The majority here would have agreed back a 150 years ago that 'anti-heroin-ers' are crazy and that Heroin is the best thing to give to a teething baby. Turned out they were wrong. I worked in pharmaceuticals for most of my career and can tell you that we have no idea yet what these things will do to us. Millions have been spent to pay in compensation to vaccine victims and their families [quite a lot for something that is apparently safe] Yay we are so informed. Orange man bad, Vaccines good, You - crazy nazi.if you have researched it properly and try to convince me with facts.

It's not Bored Panda's job or anyone else's to feed you research on something; Google exists for a reason. Vaccines save lives. Unless you specifically worked in the part of pharmaceuticals that develops vaccines for specific things, working there for most of your career doesn't mean you have a clue about how safe things are or not.

It is funny how a lot of people here "think" that vaccinating children would be equal to exercising their "rights" or future decisions, and it doesn't come to the mind of any of those, that the opposite is equally right - what if one day your child accuses you that you forcefully vaccinated it, and put it to the risk of being crippled for a lifetime, or even worse - really disable them for a lifetime with a vaccine? Why do you think that the right to choose to vaccinate should be stronger than the right to choose to not vaccinate, based on an informed opinion?

Here in Finland children and teenagers can get a vaccinations even if the parents do not approve them. Same thing is also with the birth control and abortions - an underaged person can get those without the parent knowing about it. That is because some religious parents are a health hazard for the child by not allowing those.

Rafaella Bueno

This was not written by a child. It is most likely a paid add for the pharmaceutical industry. https://iamajuicer.wordpress.com/2018/06/17/vaccinations-spread-and-cause-disease/

If you are 15 and have made it this far without vaccines, what is the point? Just curious of your need for them now?

It seems that lobbies such as pharmaceutical love Bored Banda, we get a least once a week a post bullying anti-vaccine, have you heard of the rise of autism since the 80's because of people getting their child vaccinated? Search on the internet, you'll find plenty of testimonies, documentaries and even scientist agreeing to that fact

I laughed out loud when I read " Is it the homeopathic industry that is at fault? It makes billions of dollars with extreme profit margins,"

Mary Kretzmann, you should google "Placebo use in vaccine trials: Recommendations of a WHO expert panel" and fully understand it before making some out of context comment about placebo testing vaccines.

Strange how he managed to survive until 15 without being vaccinated against those "horrible" diseases? Shouldn't he have died until now, according to the official agenda of the fear-driven-marketing? What a plain manipulation is this article, and thousands of ignorant pro-vax idiots believe in it...

"shouldn't he have died.."? There wasn't an outbreak until now...which would have been prevented had people been smart enough to vaccinate their children. Now he might die because he's not vaccinated. MORON!!

Hey Bored Panda, stick to your wheelhouse - fun memes and animals doing crazy things. Leave the controversial topics we’re already tired of being saturated with to the news.
