Not every building is as beautiful as the Palace of Versailles. Or blends into its surroundings as well as the Macallan Distillery. On the contrary, there are many structures across the world looking like outcasts that will fall apart during the next storm. In some places, they aren't isolated examples, either — even an entire neighborhood can be an abomination. And you can find them on r/UrbanHell.

It's a photography subreddit of "all the hideous places human beings built or inhabit." The online community invites everyone who wants to explore the darker side of the cities, towns, and villages in our shared world and welcomes any photos which show either ugliness, or a problem in urban development. Rural and suburban nightmares are also allowed.

Below you will find a collection of pics that perfectly describe what this subreddit is all about.

Yup--but we know that most folks will look at this & think "Those People"--not thinking about the trash or pollution they themselves generate-- in north america we pay a lot of people to "Clean" it up for us--but have you noticed that everyday there is Fresh trash in the streets/parks ect -Someone else cleans it up so we just keep dumping it anywhere-Just look at all the masks /fast food garbage ect ect in parking lots ect ect-- Gotta keep the car clean but to lazy to put stuff in the garbage can-

AMEN SISTAH! That is so very true...just go SCUBA diving almost anywhere on the planet and the plastic is always there. I've been diving since 1968, and worked with an Underwater Cinematographer and have been diving all over. It has gotten SO MUCH WORSE. I fear for every living being. It has to stop!

We humans don't deserve to live on this earth. It's crumbling around us and still "we" are destroying the oceans, wildlife and ignoring global warming. There's this fixation with 2050, all will be okay. Well - 2050 WILL BE TOO LATE.

But it is think about how much Carbon dioxide we put into the air and smog that causes health risks that shorten the life expectation so let's start small by cleaning Beaches and polluted inland areas and plant trees and clean waters use less electricity and water because we can't just have a few groups and except it to solve it we need almost everyone to come together and help.

We DO see the damage...and we keep doing it! I do it every day when I go to a market that packs in plastic bags! Every time I buy socks in a 3pack, the plastic Dennisons that keep them attached make me think of blinded sea turtles when THEY all wind up in the ocean together. How do we start big companies whose products we buy to make changes (I typed a version of ‘carnages’ by mistake)?

If nature gave back what man has been dumping for centuries, mankind would no longer exist. Just the nuclear disasters alone would wipe out hundreds of thousands of people if it dumped it all back on us. Just my opinion.

This is for real. One of my colleagues was sent over to India to train newbies (and ended up that he was training our replacements !). He was supposed to be there for at least 6 weeks--he came back after just one. The disgusting trash was there...he had photos similar to this. No one made an effort to pick up the litter. It was very sad and disturbing that a family was literally living on the steps of the hotel. He would bring them fruit and food from the buffet. They had several family dogs who were very friendly. The day before he left, one of the dogs nipped at his leg and it broke the skin. A hotel employee saw what happened and immediately told him to get inside. They had a doctor on call, and he told him that the street dogs have no vacs and he was in danger of contracting rabies. After an all night flight, he came into the office and told us what happened. It was SO SMALL...like a scratch, but he had to go through the rabies series. It was terrifying. He is OK!

I have some wonderful Indian acquaintances and I love their culture, food, dress style etc but there is no way I would go and visit their country of origin for 2 main reasons. I can't stand this sort of mess, the over crowding and of course the poverty so that's 3 reasons. It would break my heart and spirit I think. I'm a bit of a wimp I guess.

If this picture bothers you, you should see the state of the Ganges as of recent. Poor families who had loved ones die of COVID and couldn’t afford wood for a funeral pyre instead wrapped the bodies in shrouds and gave them a water burial… hundreds of times over. So, while the Ganges has long been polluted, the past years events have seen a new, morbid addition to what used to be a sacred waterway.

About half of the global population already lives in cities, and by 2050, two-thirds of the world's people are expected to live in urban areas. But as you can see from some of the photos in r/UrbanHell, in cities, two of the most pressing problems facing the world today also come together: poverty and environmental degradation.

Bad urban development isn't just ugly aesthetics. It's also poor air and water quality, insufficient water availability, waste-disposal problems, and high energy consumption, all of which are exacerbated by the increasing population density and demands of urban environments. Strong city planning is essential in managing these and other difficulties as the world's urban areas grow.

Some of the biggest problems caused by urbanization are:

  • Intensive urban growth can lead to greater poverty, with local governments unable to provide services for all people;
  • Concentrated energy use. It leads to greater air pollution with a significant impact on human health;
  • Automobile exhaust produces elevated lead levels in urban air;
  • Large volumes of uncollected waste create multiple health hazards;
  • Urban development can magnify the risk of environmental hazards such as flash flooding;
  • Pollution and physical barriers to root growth promote loss of urban tree cover;
  • Animal populations are inhibited by toxic substances, vehicles, and the loss of habitat and food sources.

Solutions might include:

  • Combat poverty by promoting economic development and job creation;
  • Involve local community in local government;
  • Reduce air pollution by upgrading energy use and alternative transport systems;
  • Create private-public partnerships to provide services such as waste disposal and housing;
  • Plant trees and incorporate the care of city green spaces as a key element in urban planning.

Ultimately, cities can bring us obstacles and opportunities as well as freedom and captivity, and it's up to us to get the most out of them.

Again context is great. This was done to facilitate troop movements quickly in and out of the capital which proved vital in WWII as the soldiers from Siberia crossed Red Square in the May Day parades and went straight to the front lines to repel the Nazis. The French similarly built huge boulevards in Paris to facilitate troop movements and to keep people from being able to build barricades, which is a French national tradition.

Until now I never really considered the effect on the landscape. You can have this monstrosity or you can lose the fields so each house can have it's own 20ft piece of land. We've seen both examples in this thread.

My practical side totally understands the convenience of building the bridge across to make traffic flow easier and avoid congestion. But my romantic side hates the thought of breaking up the gorgeous natural ocean view with a man-made concrete bridge and traffic! Takes the breathtaking and makes it concrete jungle

It is a wonderful building and what is missing from this context is Soviet built Moscow has a lot of green space as buffers between buildings, which the current government is developing. Additionally they are seizing the Khrushchev era buildings, displacing families to the suburbs and developing the land into expensive condos. This was a house for workers, which they got for free ( tied to their jobs)

Actually I dont think it's a bad idea. Of course we would all like to place out earthly remains somewhere serene, but if space is limited, this is a better option than lets say a kindergarden/school next to a factory...

That "Dreamland" building is actually a beautiful art-deco cinema. It is a legally protected listed building, and not only that, it's listed at grade II*, which puts it in the top 8 percent of ALL protected buildings in the UK. It's a very fine piece of architecture.
