This place is used mostly for weddings and tourists. Now there are actual ghost cities that were built for people that never took off, but this was built for tourists and weddings.

They have this market problem. A general attitude is that it's very good to invest. So, a billion people or so eager to give someone their money, all expecting a return. That's what all these cities are built on - investor money. They just build it and kind of cross their fingers, hope someone buys eventually. Investors, average working class people, have their money tied up, hands are tied. Developer cuts corners, skimps on costs, walks away rich. Government tend not to interfere - people's justice and all that. And someone's gotta build the glorious future. Might as well be gullible W**g, says Xinping. Round and round. It's one of those strange quirks of Chinese mindset, similar to their attitude towards gambling, social issues, so forth. It's traditional taoist/buddhist, almost pagan "as nature" "let it be" kind of philosophy bastardised by communist tyranny. They kinda got it more or less figured out but lost at the same time. Free and powerless. And more or less all kind of propping up an illusion, lest they be noticed as the nail that needs to be hammered down. And many have no more knowledge of or even interest in the rest of the world than your average North Korean. Nuh. What they see is what they get.

Dictatorships and Communists have no one allowed to ask that question. So when some person who is very good at solving a certain type of problem gets a 'vision' about a totally different problem, there is no one around to say "Your expertise has nothing to do with this, do not do it."

I don’t wonder why they built it, I wonder why it failed. This looks so very much better than those vast apartment blocks I’ve seen in other Chinese cities. I’d like to know what the missing information is to explain the developers failure. If this is kitsch it’s quite subtle compared to what we reward Las Vegas for.

There are lots of these types of buildings in Asia. It is so people who will never be able to afford to go to Paris can feel like they're there. Great for photos and days out. Thailand's Hua Hin resort has several.
