Not every building is as beautiful as the Palace of Versailles. Or blends into its surroundings as well as the Macallan Distillery. On the contrary, there are many structures across the world looking like outcasts that will fall apart during the next storm. In some places, they aren't isolated examples, either — even an entire neighborhood can be an abomination. And you can find them on r/UrbanHell.

It's a photography subreddit of "all the hideous places human beings built or inhabit." The online community invites everyone who wants to explore the darker side of the cities, towns, and villages in our shared world and welcomes any photos which show either ugliness, or a problem in urban development. Rural and suburban nightmares are also allowed.

Below you will find a collection of pics that perfectly describe what this subreddit is all about.

About half of the global population already lives in cities, and by 2050, two-thirds of the world's people are expected to live in urban areas. But as you can see from some of the photos in r/UrbanHell, in cities, two of the most pressing problems facing the world today also come together: poverty and environmental degradation.

Bad urban development isn't just ugly aesthetics. It's also poor air and water quality, insufficient water availability, waste-disposal problems, and high energy consumption, all of which are exacerbated by the increasing population density and demands of urban environments. Strong city planning is essential in managing these and other difficulties as the world's urban areas grow.

Some of the biggest problems caused by urbanization are:

  • Intensive urban growth can lead to greater poverty, with local governments unable to provide services for all people;
  • Concentrated energy use. It leads to greater air pollution with a significant impact on human health;
  • Automobile exhaust produces elevated lead levels in urban air;
  • Large volumes of uncollected waste create multiple health hazards;
  • Urban development can magnify the risk of environmental hazards such as flash flooding;
  • Pollution and physical barriers to root growth promote loss of urban tree cover;
  • Animal populations are inhibited by toxic substances, vehicles, and the loss of habitat and food sources.

Solutions might include:

  • Combat poverty by promoting economic development and job creation;
  • Involve local community in local government;
  • Reduce air pollution by upgrading energy use and alternative transport systems;
  • Create private-public partnerships to provide services such as waste disposal and housing;
  • Plant trees and incorporate the care of city green spaces as a key element in urban planning.

Ultimately, cities can bring us obstacles and opportunities as well as freedom and captivity, and it's up to us to get the most out of them.

Rather callous to call them fools. They may not even realize the dangers. Remember, somebody where you live had to be the one to realize just how bad swimming in frothing industrial waste could be. Hell, the Cuyahoga River had to catch fire (the water itself, not logs or other debris floating on top of it) for it to sink in here in the US—-and even then, 1969, it took decades to enact and enforce legislation requiring massive cleanup, and it’s not completely clean yet.

Ummm I'm from this country and I'm disgusted. The rivers in India are polluted ruthlessly by religious people as well as industries. Its saddening how the actual lifelines are getting destroyed by the people themselves and then these people think God can solve everything. Literally no one will.

I got curious "...Yamuna Pollution... at least 90% of domestic wastewater in the city flows into the Yamuna. The wastewater mainly comes from household activities hence the presence of high content of detergent, laundry chemicals, and phosphate compounds."

Ganga has been cleaned up a lot. Largely because new govt is taking efforts. There are lot of illegal industries which operate around rivers which just dump their waste in rivers. Back in 2017, a state govt asked all illegal slaughterhouses to shut. It caused a meat crisis in the state! In 1 region it was revealed that out 126 slaughter houses that existed, only ONE had the valid permission to operate. Only 21 bothered to put up treatment plants!! That's why the current political party is popular in India, though Western media paints them to be villains - they get some things done that is good for country, correcting the rot of decades. Most political parties just operate like family business.

YUCK. But FYI, the main component of the toxic waste is phosphate... formely sold in the U.S. as dish or laundry detergent. Terrible for the environment, but these people aren't exactly being suicidal. In fact, the government's larger problem with the "idol dipping" is the further damage to the environment, not the harm done to the human dippers. (They leave the idols in the river to dissolve by the millions.)

I don't think these poor people should swim in laundry or dish detergent then. Regular soap sometimes dries out my hands. Think of rashes, inflammation, blindness, asthma, etc. Also, why was phosphate no longer used in U.S? Is it carcinogenic or like talcum? Also, do you know if this river has any harmful additives in it? Like 'fragrance,' a black box that can hold too much? (Not meaning to be rude or anything)

The lack of capitalism on display. For all you socialist/green sheeple, this is what happens when there isn't a decent economy to afford clean up along with enforcement, and economic and individual freedom to get the government to work for the people. You want clean air and water, you have to have the economic base to pay for it , OTHERWISE THE FEW BIG COMPANIES CAN DO WHAT THEY LIKE AND THERE IS NO HELP! LOOK AT CHINA-MAJOR POWER POLUTER THAT KEEPS THE POWER AND MONEY FROM MOST OF THE PEOPLE AND THEY HAVE NO RECOURSE BECAUSE OF THE OPPRESSIVE SOCIALIST GOVERNMENT. INDIA HAS A MINIMUM ECONOMIC BASE COMPARED TO ITS SIZE AND CANT AFFORD CLEAN UP OR ENFORCEMENT.

This is one of the holy rivers in our country. People revere the water from these rivers. But, its also polluted af. While on a boating trip with my family, we witnessed lots of corpses floating in the water (humans and animals alike) disposed off in the river because people couldn't be bothered to cremate them properly. The helmsman rowing the boat even took a sip of the water (unperturbed by the dead bodies floating nearby), and urged us to do the same, all because the water was considered holy, and taking a sip was supposed to wash away all your sins. Needless to say, we didn't follow suit.

How do you know God or other powerful spiritual leaders right exist? What facts do you have to prove it? Also, why is it so hard to just let people live? I personally don't believe in any spiritual leaders, at least for now, because that's how I was raised. And that's fine. But I'm not going to disrespect somebody's beliefs just because I don't agree. That's just absurd and rather rude. ALSO also, how do you know that prayers have never worked in the... What was it? "history of the planet"? How would you even know? You weren't alive in 1837. You don't know if people prayed back then and it had helped people. You have no idea because you weren't there. Please attempt to educate yourself, or at least attempt to be a better human being, before you say something like this again. Thank you, have a nice day.

Again context is great. This was done to facilitate troop movements quickly in and out of the capital which proved vital in WWII as the soldiers from Siberia crossed Red Square in the May Day parades and went straight to the front lines to repel the Nazis. The French similarly built huge boulevards in Paris to facilitate troop movements and to keep people from being able to build barricades, which is a French national tradition.

Until now I never really considered the effect on the landscape. You can have this monstrosity or you can lose the fields so each house can have it's own 20ft piece of land. We've seen both examples in this thread.

My practical side totally understands the convenience of building the bridge across to make traffic flow easier and avoid congestion. But my romantic side hates the thought of breaking up the gorgeous natural ocean view with a man-made concrete bridge and traffic! Takes the breathtaking and makes it concrete jungle

It is a wonderful building and what is missing from this context is Soviet built Moscow has a lot of green space as buffers between buildings, which the current government is developing. Additionally they are seizing the Khrushchev era buildings, displacing families to the suburbs and developing the land into expensive condos. This was a house for workers, which they got for free ( tied to their jobs)

Actually I dont think it's a bad idea. Of course we would all like to place out earthly remains somewhere serene, but if space is limited, this is a better option than lets say a kindergarden/school next to a factory...

That "Dreamland" building is actually a beautiful art-deco cinema. It is a legally protected listed building, and not only that, it's listed at grade II*, which puts it in the top 8 percent of ALL protected buildings in the UK. It's a very fine piece of architecture.
