People Share Surreal Pics Of Liminal Spaces, Here Are 30 Of The Strangest (New Pics)
If you’ve visited a mostly empty mall close to closing time or a hotel that is almost completely vacant, you no doubt have been struck with a feeling of creeping unease, possibly mixed with some deja vu. You would not be alone in this feeling, and the ubiquity of smartphones these days means that internet users are documenting all the places that unsettle them.
The obsession with liminal spaces is a bit hard to explain, but there is no denying that it’s very real. Various internet groups exist where people share images of unsettling, eerie, or strangely nostalgic places they have encountered. So be sure to upvote your favorites and comment on how they made you feel.

Abandoned Subways In Paris Are Bring Re-Purposed As Swimming Pools
This is a proposal from an architect studio, not an actual place. They also proposed to re-use abandoned stations for night clubs or even public gardens. More info here : https://www.wired.com/2014/02/paris-subway-remodels/

To get a common question out of the way, liminal refers to a threshold or limit (the common root is visible here) that is at the bare minimum of getting a perceptible response. It has a somewhat morbid use as well, referring to a sort of state between life and death. As you can see in many of the images, the locations are hallways, corridors, parking lots, and other places that we have to pass through to get where we actually want to go.
While the actual emotion might be a lot older, it has only been studied recently. Before smartphones, we didn’t really have a good way to document these places, and who was going to waste physical film on a “bland” hotel hallway? Not to mention, most of us don’t spend that much time in these places, no doubt feeling a few, quick pangs of unease before walking through them to our final destination.
Perfect Forest
Wish I could upvote you more than once for this comment.
Load More Replies...Tom Waits once was asked why his persona is such a weirdo. "Imagine two trees in a forest. One is straight, has very few branches, and is pretty high. The other is crumpled, lots of branches, not tall by any means - guess which they'll saw down, and which they'll leave alone?" - very much this.
This type of tree cultivation (trees spaced on a grid) is common throughout northern Italy as well as central and eastern Europe. The trees are commonly birches or poplar, that are destined for paper or plywood production. In Italy this technique is named "Sesto in Quadrato", in Germany and Austria it's called "Schlanke-spindel".
Load More Replies...Hmm.... I may get downvoted for this but... to me a perfect forest is one where the trees have planted themselves and humans let the forest be by itself as much as possible. This means they can trim whatever and make sure it doesn't overgrow. But trees planted in straight lines are.... well, not perfect imo.

Yup, this rout is south of town called Namibe, which adds to confusion. I've been there, from the car it doesn't look as amazing, but there are a lot of seals on that beach😍
Load More Replies...For one thing, "Nambia" is not real, I assume they meant Namibia. The other thing is that this picture is not of Namibia, it's Angola. But still a cool picture.

Now psychologists believe that these liminal spaces have a similar effect to the uncanny valley, where something appears familiar and known, but “off” in such a way as to provoke general creepiness mixed with recognition. These spaces are the same, familiar, as we have no doubt encountered hundreds, but lacking in the features we actually place in our own homes, personality, heart, and charm.

This looks like a scene straight out of a Hayao Miyazaki movie.
If you pay attention, it’s noticeable that many of the images here depict places that are somewhat under-maintained or old. This adds to the liminal space uncanny valley, as this sort of disrepair is more common in non-personal constructions, like the utility areas of a mall or a small parking lot on the edge of a building. The wear-and-tear also makes us see these locations as old, evoking memories of places we’ve visited as a child, even if this nostalgia isn’t actually related to the place in the picture.
I Took This Long Exposure Photo Of Wind Turbines, Felt Like It Fit Here
The blades of the wind turbines are no longer visible, because of the long exposure, but each time they pass behind the mast, the shadow of the mast is visible on the blades, because the mast does not move, so the shadow is also always in the same place. It is also for this reason that we see a kind of white cloud at the top of the masts behind them, because the blades are wider there, and their speed of movement is slower near the axis than at their tip

Most of the locations are also somewhat strange in that no people are present. All of these buildings exist for the use of us humans, so to see them empty creates unease. Where are the people? Why is this place abandoned? Sometimes the operative emotion is sadness, like a playground that looks worn out and left to rot. Psychologically, we know that children used to play here, but no don’t and our brain starts to wonder why.

I worked at a place that had a small scrolling marquee at the entrance to the manufacturing floor. It would show a slogan about safety. One of them was something like " you should never give up thinking about safety". If you liked at it at the right time, the only words on the screen were "Give Up".
Despite its current popularity, as far as internet trends go, liminal spaces are quite new. The first “breakout” example originated in the notorious imageboard 4chan, with a picture of what looked like the backrooms of an office building, stripped of furnishing. Fluorescent lights, the old, yellow wallpaper, and no windows all came together to create a place that was somehow familiar, yet evocative of a cave, claustrophobic and dangerous.

When looking at this original example of liminal space, one can almost imagine the hum of the lights and the softness of the old carpet, despite only a handful of people having ever visited it. The important part is the isolation, as this “failure of presence” sticks out in our brains, putting us on edge even though the location has all the trappings of something we are seemingly familiar with.

Chinese Ghost City Look Like A World Boarder Of A Game
In short - politicians building more than they need to make themselves look better when they try to move to Beijing and apparently also middle class/rich people buying up the units as investments but not living there or renting them out. It's kind of weird. Better / longer explanation in linked article --- https://uschinatoday.org/features/2022/01/11/cities-lost-in-limbo-are-chinas-ghost-cities-here-to-stay
Load More Replies...There is something deeply flawed in the Chinese building business, leading to these speculations. Local governments have to periodically sell off huge swats of land to remain fiscally solvent, or national government would step in. Developers buy the land on the cheap, but when a developer is granted a new plot of land from local government, he has to start building practically immediately or he is going to lose construction rights and the lease. So they build these condos, hoping to quickly sell enough units to wannabe-landlords to justify building the required services later on. Of course they have to build on the cheap (at the state of China's construction business, this means "on the very, very, very cheap, and then cheaper") to recoup costs by selling just the initial batch of condos.
Well, technically there is a third possibility, that is not as common but nevertheless WAY too common for civilized nations' standards. That is: the newly built buildings crumble down, or topple, or collapse.
Load More Replies...Seen that there is a worldwide shortage of sand of the quality necessary fir stable concrete, this is a shocking waste of a scarce basic product and a crime against humanity. Digging this amount up, shipping it, let the prices skyrock so the costs for building houses skyrock too... only to demolish them... It is not possible to extract the sand or use the gravel for new houses. Humanity is done, maybe 100 years to go

At night, we stocked the store by the light of lanterns from sporting goods hung on the category signs in the aisles. Dark Walmart is still the creepiest place I think I've ever been.
Ha! This is what a lot of malls look like at noon: empty and shuttered.
I am in dark malls every day, malls are hurting so they turn most of the lights out before i leave work. Can still see, but I do around for my safety. Few years ago at a previous company I was helping out one of our stores in the Mall of America and I got out around 1:00 am and walked to my car alone. The lighting was decent but the rides area had less lights on. I could see down the long halls, so I didn't think any person or zombie could catch me.
I have. Or at least after closing. My granddad worked evening shift at a mall in Arkansas. We would go visit him after hours. I remember throwing a wood glider around and accidentally got it stuck in the fake plants above a store doorway. I don't remember how old I was, but it was back in the 80s.

This is exactly the opposite of the truth. In reality the men are hunters, stalking their rattling prey across the landscape, trapping them, breaking their spirit, taming them and herding them to a life of slavery. Possibly.”

The 5am Ferry From Seattle
I've been on this one. Not sure which ferry this is but when I was based in Bremerton I'd take the Bremerton/Seattle fairy rather often. If I was coming back from a weekend at our farm it would often be the wee hours.
Back in the 1970s when I commuted from Vashon Island to Seattle there was one old boat that had wood benches and a very cool round cabin at each end. In the early morning they kept the lights off in one of those cabins so people could doze. It was very much a liminal experience.
Seattle changed so profoundly in the 1990s after the tech boom, that reminders of its Weyerhauser/Boeing working-class days are cherished. The dowdy 70’s ferries are a vestige of this. They tried to inaugurate modernized vessels, but they created wakes that damaged rich people’s waterfront property.

Did You Miss Your Flight?
That happened to me years ago. I needed a pee so i went to the check in toilets. Exactly the same as the pic above. Had said pee then went back to the bar and told my travelling partner that the plane had fuked off. Within about 1.5 seconds there was 500 people who heard me and started legging it down to the gate going effing mental (we were told to wait in the bar/resto bit for some reason). It kicked off big time. I found out that the pilot "forgot to tell anyone when to board". so he left!! After hours of karens screaming i asked the chap behind the desk if i could have a cigarette and he said follow me. We smoked as i could see he needed it as much as me. He returns to work. I got a 5 star room for the night and then the next day i flew out. Thank you Stephen. Free pina coladas as well. True story i just don't understand how anyone on the flight crew didn't notice anything. !!!
I can understand how the entire flight crew had no more Fs to give and ran with it.
