We humans like to think that we're in charge of the planet we live on. Without being able to collectively decide how it should be done, we're at the controls. But are we in control?

The scientific community is, in fact, converging on the idea that we have entered a new phase of Earth's history — one in which our activity has become a powerful agent of geological change, equal to the other great forces of nature that build mountains and shape continents and species. The proposed name for this emerging period is the "Anthropocene" or the age of humanity.

But nature doesn't care about that. It's not conceding anything and reminds us about its power whenever it has the chance. From droughts and wildfires to earthquakes and floods, it has plenty of tools to do so as well.

So we at Bored Panda decided to put together a list of pictures, showing just how chaotic our surroundings can get. Continue scrolling to check them out and upvote the most memorable ones!

This was pretty common in Kerala at my Grandma's place in the hills near the Karnataka rainforest. The 10 to 15 days that I used to live there was without continuous electricity and we used have rains that lasted for days, but we absolutely loved that place.

To learn more about the weather, we contacted Bob McDavitt, a weather guru who uses //etBoB to provide weather information for cruising sailors, primarily for those in the South Pacific.

McDavitt was born in Marton, New Zealand, and was schooled in Wellington. He graduated with B.Sc (hons) degrees in Maths and Computer Science from Victoria University, and has been a meteorologist since 1975.

For twenty years, McDavitt was the MetService Weather Ambassador, and focused on promoting friendly relations with weather users. This involved communicating awareness about any incoming nasty weather, keeping an eye on the impact of the weather on the coming season and any special events, and arranging MetService promotions, displays, and exhibitions.

"The meteorological way of making a weather prediction is based on the scientific method," McDavitt told Bored Panda.

"1) Data is gathered to measure what is happening now; 2) This data is turned into a grid of numbers; 3) Computer programs that mimic known physics extrapolate these numbers into a future state/time; 4)These numbers are then converted into text and graphics to send off to users who are warned when defined thresholds are exceeded," the weather guru explained.

I was the last one they allowed to test during a snow storm. I drove an old VW bug. When we got back the tester thought I was 16 and going for my first test. I was 18 and it was my second. The tester had the wrong VW. Anyway the tester said they were impressed at how well I shifted gears, (it was a standard shift), and handled the snow. I passed.

(1/2) The winter following Hurricane Sandy, we experienced something like this. It was called Superstorm Nemo. Not quite to this extent but it was 3' of snow or more in a span of less than 12 hours, Friday night into Saturday. Wherever you were during the storm is pretty much where you stayed unless you had some way to get somewhere else early in the storm. I didn't realize that and attempted to drive home from work after having spent the night there. Made it all the way to my neighborhood before I had to abandon my car. I very truly almost died walking down my street in 3' of snow in the dark. I fell twice and the 2nd time I had no strength to get back up. My house was visible from where I was laying but my hands and feet were brutally numb and I couldn't find my phone to call my family. At that moment, I saw that my father had cleared a small path with the snow blower and it was about 4' away from me. If I could heave myself to it, I could stand up and walk normally.

(2/2) So that's what I did by summoning my ENTIRE WILL TO LIVE. By the time I reached the front door, I collapsed in the house and sobbed. The roads weren't plowed until Tuesday. We were trapped in our homes for 4 days. I remember the news showing an overhead shot of Long Island and it was nothing but roofs, abandoned cars, and snow. Not a single road or driveway visible. Easily one of the most terrifying experiences of my life.

It looks my livingroom window at times in winter. The reason is the snow sliding from the roof and piling up on one side of the one storey house. On the other side it’s usually easy to see out and open the front door. But it sure is nice and warm as we have lots of geothermal water to heat the houses.

It is said that a five-day forecast can accurately predict the weather approximately 90 percent of the time, a seven-day forecast is right about 80 percent of the time, and a 10-day—or longer—forecast will live up to its words only about half the time.

Models have to use estimates and assumptions to predict the weather. But the atmosphere is constantly changing and those estimates are less reliable the further you get into the future.

"Weather is a mix of pattern and chaos," McDavitt pointed out. "We can only follow the pattern and attempt to work out the bounds of the chaos."

Be careful with windfalls like these. If some branches break off or the weight of the tree is reduced in any other way the stump can raise up again and what's under the turf will be trapped. - This is the original meaning of the "other" windfall, suddenly getting unexpected money: People hid their valuables under trees, which could fall over and reveal the hidden treasure to people passing by.

They are only in the darker soil. Can't go deeper, so they spread vertically. That's why the darker ground is moved up like a carpet. Tree roots are holding it together.

American football plays a lot in these conditions actually, especially in northern states! As a kid I played in a non professional soccer game that when it began to snow we had less than a full half left, so we just kept playing through it! I will say, with enough layers the players usually don’t feel too cold because you’re constantly moving, running around, but yeah the poor fans are gonna be chilly….

This is pretty common. I lived there for almost 13 years and I can tell you the fog doesn't burn off. And even if you are visiting in summer, bring layers because it gets cold. Can always tell the summer tourists - shorts with a SF novelty sweatshirt because they didn't bring the right clothes. And don't ever expect to go swimming without a wetsuit because it is so cold.

Ever heard of proper insulation combined with electric frost guards to the pipes? In Scandinavia we don't leave the water trickling. We make sure the pipes aren't exposed to frost instead.

There are lots of vacation homes in upstate NY and it's likely the owners didn't winterize it before leaving. It's not that it's poorly insulated, it's that they kept the heat off completely without shutting the water off.

Yup. If you can't keep the heat all along the pipe above freezing, keeping the water moving is the only option. If it's going to be like that for an extended period though you have to drain the entire system.

This is common in suburbia because they plant fast growing hybrid trees, they have next to no root system and are hazardous. Now suburbs that were built 20 years ago are going around and cutting these down. My buddy gets paid good money to take em out... Stupid humans.

You can go to YouTube and look up Ellicott City Maryland Main Street flooding and you will see that it happened in approximately 2000 2017 and then again in 2019. This is from over building. The water rushes down the street like a funnel and takes everything with it. In 2 years of terrible disastrous floods like this only one person has died trying to rescue someone else.

Ellicott City, MD! Sadly, this is becoming kind of frequent. They determined that too many new developments and parking lots caused the river to overflow every time it pours.

Legitimate question: what are we looking at? The middle picture looks like a building that was destroyed by fire, but that doesn’t explain how the cars got like that. I’m confused 🤔 No matter what happened, I hope everyone walked away unscathed! 😮

    ExRoot
    Community Member
3 years ago Created by potrace 1.15, written by Peter Selinger 2001-2017

That only happens in main street. It's caused by too much building at the top of the hill. Because what used to be green and woodsy has been replaced by asphalt and freshly built real estate when it rains the water channels down to Main Street with nothing to stop it like a funnel and completely wipes out main street. When it happened several years ago it was a once every thousand year event. There was Major rebuilding all the stores were back for tourists then it happened again 2 years after that. This issue has still not been fixed. There is a major Music festival there next week. There is a lot of back and forth between the historical society and etc and what's going to happen but the plan is to remove about 8 to 10 buildings at the bottom which is right next to the river and try to channel the water underneath Main Street but this is a huge major construction problem that has not even begun yet for many reasons. You can go to YouTube and look up Ellicott City Main Street flooding.

30 inches "on Friday alone"; doesn't specify how much on Thursday, Saturday, etc., nor does it mention the winds which can easily mount up 6 to 8 foot drifts from under 3 feet of snow if the geometry of a building is just right.

When I was a kid, my father and I were sitting in the living room watching cartoons and eating pancakes when the ground shook.. I stood up and saw a large 40-50 ft pine tree leaning over the neighbors house. My father called 911 and then had me call the neighbors house to get them out while he headed out the door. The ground shook again and the tree went down on the roof and snapped the power lines. We all stayed inside while utilities and fire tried to get them out safely. The branches broke through their garage and dropped a table and 6 dining chairs from the attic onto the husbands 280ZX.

Some places don't have basements.. An interior bathroom or closet would then be the best bet because they don't have windows.

Genuinely curious.. would you rather have a bunch of warnings that may not actually happen say, like for tornados, or just rare-ish a random event like an earthquake?

About 2 weeks ago I tried getting a loan but to no avail, I didn’t get an approval due to low credit score of 415. I came across a testimony on a comment session about a credit Expert called KENSTAR, helping people get their credit fixed in a week or more. I decided to give a try, to my greatest surprise he removed all negative items in my profile and increased my score up to 800. I advise you all to email him on KENSTARCYBERSERVICES@GMAIL.COM . He is truly the best in terms of credit repair services.

Same thing happened to me about a decade ago. Difference is that it "bounced" (pun originally unintended) into our neighbor's backyard and damaged our fairly tall fence. Only the very top of it though, so it was a surprisingly high jump. I may be misremembering this, but I think it landed upright too. They just looked out their back-window and saw a trampoline sitting there... What I would have given to see that thing hopping around like a bunny rabbit and then just sit there like nothing had happened...

If I remember correctly, liquor stores were ruled to be "essential store locations" even during the most severe parts of Covid lockdowns... Unless that was just in my part of good ol' Texas. Yee-haw, ya'll, (/s) we're getting our booze with or without mandated lockdowns during a global plague.

This was the craziest, eeriest feeling. I drove through my small city videoing to send to a friend in Amsterdam. It's been two years and there are still people living in motels and fighting with insurance companies. One of the non-profits in Salem were able to purchase a Motel 6 or Super 8, a budget motel that had closed to house some of the families still displaced. The will start helping people transition from being homeless as well. The homelessness in Oregon is the worst I've ever seen. So many working homeless that still can't afford a studio apartment. Salem is nearly double the federal minimum wage, Portland is double the federal minimum wage but rent is skyrocketing! People would rather have an empty unit than charge a reasonable price. A friend told me that his Portland neighborhood went up something crazy like 115% from January 2019-October 2019, pre pandemic! Blows my mind how greedy people can be.

Oof. I posted my story about my trampoline bouncing over my neighbor's fence on a post above this one, but that seems pretty mild now... Of course, our houses are made almost entirely out of brick, so I'm not sure it would have actually *impaled* their house... but damn. Simple fence damage seems lucky now.

You could still be unlucky enough for it to hit a window or door... but yeah, solid brick seems to be the way to go. It's just too bad that it tends to be more expensive (at least around here). That being said, having your house impaled would also rack up some costs. If it's your neighbor's trampoline, you could probably sue for damages, but if it's your own... well, I hope you like your new wall decoration or second mortgage.

Yeah, although it's usually ridiculously hot here - sometimes even too hot for palm trees (or rather, too dry... you've got to be very diligent about watering them and adjusting the soil conditions in most cases) we do have the occasional freeze. If he (or anyone reading this) tries out palm trees in Texas, you've got to wrap them and adjust the soil conditions (more than usual) when it drops below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Doesn't happen all that often, but we do experience a freeze every now and then... if he hasn't been doing this each winter (if you can even call it that here), I'm actually pretty damn impressed that they lasted 30 years.

At least the houses look (relatively) unharmed... compared to what *could* have happened, I mean. I'm sure there was some roof damage, but it doesn't look like it crashed into someone's living room or anything. Silver linings... Though I wonder if they're going to argue about whose tree it technically was (looks like it may have been right on the property line) and who should pay for whose roof damage.

When I was 10 we lost our house to a fire. We were rebuilding when hurricane Hugo came through the east coast of the US. We just knew all the wood would be on the ground. But somehow the wind blew right through and all the studs were still standing. Only one tree my mom didn't like fell in the whole yard. Still amazes me to this day. My parents went on to live in that house for over 30 years, just sold it last year. Great house, great memories.

I would tend to advise to drill now as long as it’s not too wide and to put a basin under it as to wait for the water to accumulate and then suddenly discharge everywhere.

When our town floded my neigbour decided to save his car. It was flooded to the roof and full of mud. He took it apart to the last screw, cleaned every part separately and put it back together. It worked. This was in the 90s though, guess cars are made differently now with parts you can’t even open.

My neighbor's solution to an unattached downspout is to place a 1-square foot of wood underneath the opening to disperse the rain. That's instead of just reattaching the downspout. 🙄

    Yoga Kitty

Not just the US - we also have a lot of trampolines here in Germany as well. Nearly every family with a garden and children seems to have one! When I was still a child, it was quite common to have a table tennis plate or maybe a kicker, however, you always needed at least two kids to play. Trampolines are fun for one or more kids and provide healthy activity for hours! Just tie them down properly and have a safety net around that the little ones cannot fall off...

I posted a rather long note about the hail in Texas on a post above this... but you're actually relatively lucky. I'm sure it certainly doesn't *feel* lucky in any way, shape or form, but it looks like it was "only" pingpong-ball or golfball sized. Maybe baseball sized at worst (need banana for scale). We got grapefruit sized earlier this year. Probably some decent sized dents, but your roof doesn't appear to be crushed and (although I'm sure you'd much rather have an undamaged bumper - and, to be fair to the hail, it looks like the tree might be responsible for that) it looks like the only thing you'll absolutely *have* to replace is your windshield. Considering it's Texas, your car got through relatively unscathed. Not a happy situation, just a "Well, at least you made it out alive..." one. 'Cause the plus side, you didn't die! That'll happen on occasion... So yay, you survived Texas!
