We humans like to think that we're in charge of the planet we live on. Without being able to collectively decide how it should be done, we're at the controls. But are we in control?
The scientific community is, in fact, converging on the idea that we have entered a new phase of Earth's history — one in which our activity has become a powerful agent of geological change, equal to the other great forces of nature that build mountains and shape continents and species. The proposed name for this emerging period is the "Anthropocene" or the age of humanity.
But nature doesn't care about that. It's not conceding anything and reminds us about its power whenever it has the chance. From droughts and wildfires to earthquakes and floods, it has plenty of tools to do so as well.
So we at Bored Panda decided to put together a list of pictures, showing just how chaotic our surroundings can get. Continue scrolling to check them out and upvote the most memorable ones!

Heavy Rain Turns Stairway Into A Waterfall

This was pretty common in Kerala at my Grandma's place in the hills near the Karnataka rainforest. The 10 to 15 days that I used to live there was without continuous electricity and we used have rains that lasted for days, but we absolutely loved that place.

To learn more about the weather, we contacted Bob McDavitt, a weather guru who uses //etBoB to provide weather information for cruising sailors, primarily for those in the South Pacific.
McDavitt was born in Marton, New Zealand, and was schooled in Wellington. He graduated with B.Sc (hons) degrees in Maths and Computer Science from Victoria University, and has been a meteorologist since 1975.
For twenty years, McDavitt was the MetService Weather Ambassador, and focused on promoting friendly relations with weather users. This involved communicating awareness about any incoming nasty weather, keeping an eye on the impact of the weather on the coming season and any special events, and arranging MetService promotions, displays, and exhibitions.

Load More Replies..."The meteorological way of making a weather prediction is based on the scientific method," McDavitt told Bored Panda.
"1) Data is gathered to measure what is happening now; 2) This data is turned into a grid of numbers; 3) Computer programs that mimic known physics extrapolate these numbers into a future state/time; 4)These numbers are then converted into text and graphics to send off to users who are warned when defined thresholds are exceeded," the weather guru explained.

I was the last one they allowed to test during a snow storm. I drove an old VW bug. When we got back the tester thought I was 16 and going for my first test. I was 18 and it was my second. The tester had the wrong VW. Anyway the tester said they were impressed at how well I shifted gears, (it was a standard shift), and handled the snow. I passed.

Load More Replies...(1/2) The winter following Hurricane Sandy, we experienced something like this. It was called Superstorm Nemo. Not quite to this extent but it was 3' of snow or more in a span of less than 12 hours, Friday night into Saturday. Wherever you were during the storm is pretty much where you stayed unless you had some way to get somewhere else early in the storm. I didn't realize that and attempted to drive home from work after having spent the night there. Made it all the way to my neighborhood before I had to abandon my car. I very truly almost died walking down my street in 3' of snow in the dark. I fell twice and the 2nd time I had no strength to get back up. My house was visible from where I was laying but my hands and feet were brutally numb and I couldn't find my phone to call my family. At that moment, I saw that my father had cleared a small path with the snow blower and it was about 4' away from me. If I could heave myself to it, I could stand up and walk normally.
(2/2) So that's what I did by summoning my ENTIRE WILL TO LIVE. By the time I reached the front door, I collapsed in the house and sobbed. The roads weren't plowed until Tuesday. We were trapped in our homes for 4 days. I remember the news showing an overhead shot of Long Island and it was nothing but roofs, abandoned cars, and snow. Not a single road or driveway visible. Easily one of the most terrifying experiences of my life.
Load More Replies...It looks my livingroom window at times in winter. The reason is the snow sliding from the roof and piling up on one side of the one storey house. On the other side it’s usually easy to see out and open the front door. But it sure is nice and warm as we have lots of geothermal water to heat the houses.
Summers In England

This is definitely edited BUT they do get extremely dark here when a storm is due
Load More Replies...I've never seen it so bright and so dark at the same time, it literally took me a good minute to realize that this was a picture taken in the daytime and not dusk as a storm comes in.
It is said that a five-day forecast can accurately predict the weather approximately 90 percent of the time, a seven-day forecast is right about 80 percent of the time, and a 10-day—or longer—forecast will live up to its words only about half the time.
Models have to use estimates and assumptions to predict the weather. But the atmosphere is constantly changing and those estimates are less reliable the further you get into the future.
"Weather is a mix of pattern and chaos," McDavitt pointed out. "We can only follow the pattern and attempt to work out the bounds of the chaos."

This Is What Happens In My Hometown When You Don't Leave The Faucet Trickling In The Winter. Pipes Bursting In Watertown, NY
Ever heard of proper insulation combined with electric frost guards to the pipes? In Scandinavia we don't leave the water trickling. We make sure the pipes aren't exposed to frost instead.
There are lots of vacation homes in upstate NY and it's likely the owners didn't winterize it before leaving. It's not that it's poorly insulated, it's that they kept the heat off completely without shutting the water off.
Load More Replies...The whole thing frozen like that means the heat was off in the house. Why would someone in NY leave the heat off in the winter???
Snow birds trying to save a buck when they fly south....leave the heat off but the water trickling, moving water doesn't freeze and is cheaper then gas.

Recognized as my hometown immediately. Elliott City Maryland. That's old EC Main Strret. There is a music festival on right there on Main Street next week called EC Main Strret Music Fest September 17, 2022.
You can go to YouTube and look up Ellicott City Maryland Main Street flooding and you will see that it happened in approximately 2000 2017 and then again in 2019. This is from over building. The water rushes down the street like a funnel and takes everything with it. In 2 years of terrible disastrous floods like this only one person has died trying to rescue someone else.
Load More Replies...Legitimate question: what are we looking at? The middle picture looks like a building that was destroyed by fire, but that doesn’t explain how the cars got like that. I’m confused 🤔 No matter what happened, I hope everyone walked away unscathed! 😮
That only happens in main street. It's caused by too much building at the top of the hill. Because what used to be green and woodsy has been replaced by asphalt and freshly built real estate when it rains the water channels down to Main Street with nothing to stop it like a funnel and completely wipes out main street. When it happened several years ago it was a once every thousand year event. There was Major rebuilding all the stores were back for tourists then it happened again 2 years after that. This issue has still not been fixed. There is a major Music festival there next week. There is a lot of back and forth between the historical society and etc and what's going to happen but the plan is to remove about 8 to 10 buildings at the bottom which is right next to the river and try to channel the water underneath Main Street but this is a huge major construction problem that has not even begun yet for many reasons. You can go to YouTube and look up Ellicott City Main Street flooding.

Got A Call Earlier That A Tree Fell On My House
When I was a kid, my father and I were sitting in the living room watching cartoons and eating pancakes when the ground shook.. I stood up and saw a large 40-50 ft pine tree leaning over the neighbors house. My father called 911 and then had me call the neighbors house to get them out while he headed out the door. The ground shook again and the tree went down on the roof and snapped the power lines. We all stayed inside while utilities and fire tried to get them out safely. The branches broke through their garage and dropped a table and 6 dining chairs from the attic onto the husbands 280ZX.
Why, yes. Yes it did. It just wanted to drop in and see how you're doing.

Load More Replies...This was the craziest, eeriest feeling. I drove through my small city videoing to send to a friend in Amsterdam. It's been two years and there are still people living in motels and fighting with insurance companies. One of the non-profits in Salem were able to purchase a Motel 6 or Super 8, a budget motel that had closed to house some of the families still displaced. The will start helping people transition from being homeless as well. The homelessness in Oregon is the worst I've ever seen. So many working homeless that still can't afford a studio apartment. Salem is nearly double the federal minimum wage, Portland is double the federal minimum wage but rent is skyrocketing! People would rather have an empty unit than charge a reasonable price. A friend told me that his Portland neighborhood went up something crazy like 115% from January 2019-October 2019, pre pandemic! Blows my mind how greedy people can be.
Looks like Mallacoota where all the silly tourists were told to beat it days before the fire got there. Did they go? Nope too busy making ThikToks. Did they get stuck? Yes and had to be rescued by a Navy ship because they all got stuck on the beach.

Side Of House Impaled By Trampoline After Severe Weather
Oof. I posted my story about my trampoline bouncing over my neighbor's fence on a post above this one, but that seems pretty mild now... Of course, our houses are made almost entirely out of brick, so I'm not sure it would have actually *impaled* their house... but damn. Simple fence damage seems lucky now.
You could still be unlucky enough for it to hit a window or door... but yeah, solid brick seems to be the way to go. It's just too bad that it tends to be more expensive (at least around here). That being said, having your house impaled would also rack up some costs. If it's your neighbor's trampoline, you could probably sue for damages, but if it's your own... well, I hope you like your new wall decoration or second mortgage.

My Dad Planted This Palm When I Was 3. I'm 33 Now. Two Days Of -2° Temperatures In Texas Broke It And Every Other Palm We Had
To add insult to injury, one of the -2° days was my dad's birthday.
Yeah, although it's usually ridiculously hot here - sometimes even too hot for palm trees (or rather, too dry... you've got to be very diligent about watering them and adjusting the soil conditions in most cases) we do have the occasional freeze. If he (or anyone reading this) tries out palm trees in Texas, you've got to wrap them and adjust the soil conditions (more than usual) when it drops below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Doesn't happen all that often, but we do experience a freeze every now and then... if he hasn't been doing this each winter (if you can even call it that here), I'm actually pretty damn impressed that they lasted 30 years.

Trampolines are fun for one or more kids and provide healthy activity for hours! Just tie them down properly and have a safety net around that the little ones cannot fall off...

Within 2 Days In Texas A Hail Storm And Hurricane Destroyed My Car
I posted a rather long note about the hail in Texas on a post above this... but you're actually relatively lucky. I'm sure it certainly doesn't *feel* lucky in any way, shape or form, but it looks like it was "only" pingpong-ball or golfball sized. Maybe baseball sized at worst (need banana for scale). We got grapefruit sized earlier this year. Probably some decent sized dents, but your roof doesn't appear to be crushed and (although I'm sure you'd much rather have an undamaged bumper - and, to be fair to the hail, it looks like the tree might be responsible for that) it looks like the only thing you'll absolutely *have* to replace is your windshield. Considering it's Texas, your car got through relatively unscathed. Not a happy situation, just a "Well, at least you made it out alive..." one. 'Cause the plus side, you didn't die! That'll happen on occasion... So yay, you survived Texas!

It seems to me that a LOT of people in the USA don't know that trees need to put down deep roots. You cannot expect a tree growing in 3" of soil to withstand winds.
