I'd like to think that he HAS downs syndrome, but isn't suffering from it. I understand, it's complicated, but it's not painful. In my experience, folks with downs syndrome are pretty happy; so long as the idiots of the world don't tell them they are suffering from some injustice.

I know you didn’t ask, but here’s my advice. Be careful about how you approach that romantic notion because it can also hold you back. A famous football coach once explained that “potential” can become something of an ugly word when it just means that you’ve never accomplished anything and have absolutely nothing to show. It’s fine when you’re very young, but if you’re now 30-something and people are still talking about your “potential” then maybe you have some cause for concern.
