15 Headlines Show How Differently The British Press Treat Meghan Markle Vs Kate Middleton
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex shocked the public when they announced on January 8 that they were leaving their position as senior members of the royal family. One of the most notable changes they're making is to deny a group of British press outlets first access to their personal press releases after years of press coverage and editing decisions that they feel have been unfair, filled with favoritism, and aimed to turn public opinion against Meghan in particular.
Since the announcement, journalists unearthed some of the British media’s most snide and judgmental headlines about Meghan and put them next to what the same outlets—sometimes even the same authors—thought of similar situations when fellow Duchess of Cambridge Kate Middleton was involved. Here are some of the things that British journalists only seemed to think were wrong once the former British royal family member Meghan did them. (h/t buzzfeed)

How brutal! I hate the British tabloids. Now I don't blame her for leaving. I'm sure getting dressed down by the queen for sharing her horrendous year as a royal to a newscaster helped a great deal too.
In 2016, shortly after the pair began dating, Prince Harry issued an official statement condemning the media’s coverage of Meghan. Among his complaints were one newspaper’s quips and tone-deaf euphemisms about her race and class background.
Since then, many have continued to speculate that the media’s general bias against her comes from resistance to accepting a mixed-race American into what upper-class white British people feel is an exclusive cultural institution like the British royals.

One of the 'newspapers' most guilty of this is 'The Daily Mail' This rag has a chequered history and has consistently been on the extreme right. For example, albeit a few decades ago, they backed Sir Oswald Mosely and his 'Blackshirts' Fascist political party (no, they were literally proud to call themselves that) with the now infamous headline "Hurrah for the Blackshirts" Further, they were at the back of calls to refuse to allow Jewish refugees fleeing the Nazi regime's final solution to come to Britain. In this it was very vocal. In the years following the war it moved away from anti-Semitism but remains firmly racist in it's undertones. There have been MANY previous offences before Meghan but this campaign they have coordinated with 'The Express' is the longest of them all. Meghan has done nothing worse, or better, than any of the other royal princesses. Even non-royalists and republicans are revolted by her treatment. The thinking behind it is VERY obvious..

Uh huh. Kate can get ridiculously-expensive candles to scent the place she got married in, but Meghan was "dictatorial" for wanting essentially the same? Though I think sprays could have potentially been harmful to ancient veneers or paintings--but only if they were sprayed directly onto them. I personally would have preferred candles or gone old school with braziers & incense-burners. ;-) I can see the palace staff being stuffy about people making requests regarding things like air fresheners, though. They're after all, not just staff, many of them are also conservators in the museum sense. They care for items that are hundreds of years old to keep them from damage. But, really, Meghan wasn't asking for anything untoward that Kate hadn't asked for first. Media sensationalism tainting a person's Special Day. Awful biased garbage.

The British press also loved her then. The wedding was considered a resounding success. This article was several months after her wedding and the love that the press had for her was waning rapidly. Things were supposedly being leaked about her 'attitude' and staff kept getting sacked. Arguments about the tiara and 'what Meghan wants, Meghan gets' was reported as being shouted by Harry at staff and she is said to have made Kate cry... True or not I have no idea. I'm not into the monarchy but these things are over-reported and it's hard to avoid. One thing is for sure - the press has done this to all the incoming royal women and I really wish they'd stop it.

Her husband has been her #1 supporter since bringing her into the royals, joining her to sue a British tabloid for infringing on her privacy in 2018.
At the same time, he released a scathing statement comparing the press’ treatment of her to that of his mother, Princess Diana, who died in a car accident while trying to escape from meddling photographers after years of being tormented by invasive journalists.
This year, it looks like the couple decided that strongly worded letters weren’t making a difference and they’re now setting off to teach the British press a lesson by cutting ties officially.

The reason they did this, is to stop arseholes making money off of them. The number of horrid companies that sold Diana souvenirs after her death, was atrocious and shameful. THAT is why they are doing this - so they have control over their own lives, their own privacy, their own identity. IF they chose to put their name to anything for the sake of money, that should be 100% up to them, just as it would be for anyone who is in the public eye. We hear horror stories of child stars / naive artists never making a cent off of all the millions-of-dollars of merchandising sold in the 40's through to the 90's, and walking away from their career, broke, and everyone is up in arms in defence of those artists. Nothing different here. And PS Harry and Meghan did it for their CHARITY, not themselves. FFS.

This one doesn't compare apples to apples. The first article is about Kate's ensemble and how it coordinated with the Queen's. The second is about how the Queen's aides informed Meghan she WOULD be wearing a certain hat, and she didn't understand that meant she HAD to, so she chose not to. It's apples to oranges. Here, someone is just looking for a comparison that isn't valid.

She should have been wearing a hat. Kate was born in the UK and has a far better understanding of the Royals, the family, the decorum and the press coverage than Meghan has. Meghan probably thought she understood press, but that's US press.. they don't want to be sued. The UK press is a different level and hard to explain, even to us in other parts of Europe. But if an aide nudges you to wear a hat, you do so. If I'm traveling to Morroco and someone nudges me to eat with my right hand (only) - I will do so.

But -- all we get are the headlines? This is NOT apples to apples comparison. It's not saying Kate rocked the world for wearing the wedges, and that Meghan wore the same wedges and got slammed. It's just saying the press liked Kate's shoes and that Meghan did something wrong protocol-wise. (Which, admittedly, is petty as hell, but it's not a straight comparison.)

This is just not accurate. It's been stated many many times, even before the Duchess of Sussex came into the picture, that The Queen hates wedges, so The Duchess of Cambridge uses them only when not in her presence. Plus, if you read thisbarticle they are using to prove The Duchess of Sussex is being treated wrong is literally states "thanks to that unspoken rule, Kate Middleton and Meghan Markle both wear their wedges when they're not accompanying her royal highness. Both Kate and Markle have been seen wearing wedges before, so it's not a brand-new phenomenon, but it's rare enough to get some attention". So yeah, they are not exactly crucifying her for this, they are just pointing something out.

You seem to be forgetting all the hate Kate went through in the early days of her relationship with William; when her clothes were criticised, she and her family were dragged through the mud with the press digging for any dirt. She had the French press take long lens photos of her topless and try to sell them all over the world. She has now been with William 18 years, as they got together at uni... and the press have got over their issues with her as she has proved herself hard working and unshakable (in public that is) All wives and girlfriends of major royals have Ben through press hatred... Diana, Sarah, Sophie, Kate, (and Autumn to some extent) and now Meghan. I'm. It saying it's right, it's totally unacceptable; but it happens!

Another thing I noticed in those headlines - Meghan is rarely called by her title Duchess of Sussex. Though Kate is also a commoner, she is called Duchess of Cambridge way more.

The papers rarely call either woman by their correct title - not that I think it matters. Kate was disliked intensely to begin with. Camilla was universally loathed but now things have settled. To be honest Meghan was actually welcomed and everyone talked about what a breath of fresh air she was to start with - she has bucked the trend and gone from that to being immensely unpopular. People wanted Harry to have a happy ending. It's all gone wrong that's for sure.

So, first off, I do think the negative comparisons are stupid and hurtful and shouldn't be a thing. But I note that all of the Meghan-slamming rags are TABLOIDS, not legit journalism, and they go for sensationalism and spectacle. They don't even pretend to be unbiased. I'm not the least bit surprised they have a favorite (although it's horrible and petty). Meghan has been treated poorly for sure. But Kate faced a lot of scrutiny and harshness in her early-relationship years with William. It's unfair how ALL of them are bullied by the tabloids (Princess Margaret, anyone?).

This isn’t totally representative of the coverage of Kate. Before they married, the tabloids went to town on her student days, and family and when she suffered bad morning sickness they treated her as a malingerer. The tabloids are intrusive and vile to all women. Particularly famous and royal ones.

Queen Elizabeth did a courageous job in the war and really is an amazing person. BUT! I think monarchy is wrong and it's time we got rid of it.

The wedding and the romance and it was all quite positively described - don't know what changed that.. a bit too often missing protocol?) - but these so called side by side comparisons are of such different events in all but one case that this is as damaging as the press is.
