From Bizarre To Embarrassing, Here’s 30 Pics Of Architectural And Interior Design Mistakes
There comes a point when a supposedly quirky architectural design becomes questionable. It’s usually when the chosen theme diminishes the structure’s functionality and purpose, like in the designs you’re about to see.
These photos are from the “That’s It, I’m Architecture Shaming” Facebook group. If the name isn’t a total giveaway, it calls attention to building and home designs that cause puzzlement.
Here, you’ll find images of staircases you wouldn’t dare step on, oddly placed toilets and urinals, and houses that look haphazardly built in The Sims.
More than 855,000 people keep the page alive, and we’ve picked those that stood out in the most baffling way. Hopefully, seeing these also gives you a good enough idea of what to avoid for your future designs.

Difficult To Align
Premade elements, some turned upside down! Someone forgot to mark which side was up!
By someone who was using the spacebar to align the windows instead of setting and using tabs, LOL!!
Gotta Love An Add-On. Denver, Colorado
Trying to be charitable, *possibly* they had a compelling need for more space, but couldn't come up with enough money to duplicate the original look of the house. Building is expensive, but doing the facade to match to original would have undoubtedly been much more expensive that what they settled for. Odds are, though, that they either had no sense of esthetic taste, wanted to make some apartments, or simply didn't care.
Load More Replies...That's a crying shame, especially as the rotunda was so daintily elegant.
Most places only want it to be safe. ugly, unless in an HOA,is allowed
Load More Replies...They really should have restored it back to original. They obvoiusly had the money to work with. Big mistake!
Hug Me!
That's cute. In Hamburg we have two towers that are dancing with each other
Experts have revealed a connection between architecture and people’s emotions. A BBC report mentioned recent findings by neuroscientist Colin Ellard about how we are most affected by building facades.
In the study, Ellard and the participants walked past a Whole Foods store in Lower Manhattan. According to wristband readings and surveys, the store’s smoked-glass frontage caused a drop in their arousal and mood states.
Death Stairs
The starts aren't even the biggest problem imo, but the fact that you have to walk on the kitchen counter. 🤮 From outside too with shoes on!
No problem. Place a glass divider from countertop to ceiling.
Load More Replies...Those steps need to be 3 feet wide, and have a railing on the non-wall side.
This is truly disturbing! What kind of sense does it make to have sliding doors in front of a sink, a stove, a countertop? And then add unsafe stairs to the mix?!
I'd say it's a work in progress, only maybe they just stopped before they got it finished. Looks kin of like a basement make-over that didn't get finished.

(Tiny house Airbnb in Colorado, husband for scale.)
Yes yes, typical of tiny house, we know. He's still standing on a food prep area in outside shoes - tiny house or not, you don't stand on a food prep area in outside shoes.
better to use the husband, than the husband's banana (for measuring, that is).
Load More Replies...Bad positioning of hand rails though. I hope the description was clear that you'd have to be pretty fit to use this house
This Is The Front Of The House
Yep, and then running out of the fitting Lego windows and just use all of them you'll find in your box of bricks.
Load More Replies...The report mentioned the Seattle Central Library’s interior architecture, describing it as “one of the most notoriously disorienting buildings.” According to architect and Northumbria University professor Ruth Dalton, the building’s one-way escalators could be a problem. As she told BBC, we have specific expectations regarding navigation.
“There are very few situations in the real world where you can go from A to B via one route, and you’re forced to take a different route from B back to A,” she explained, noting that it can confuse people.
Found A Hillbilly Barn Mansion On Zillow. The Crazy Fred Flinstone Esque Stairs Connecting The Kitchen To The Living Room Are What Noteworthy
Oh this house is hideous. ANNNND. My hall bathroom was that horrible florescent yellow along with the countertop. When we moved in we painted it a very pale yellow and I was finally able to get rid of the yellow Formica and replace it with a solid surface countertop. When people don't believe me I open the broom closet and show them the scream and run color.
There's no way those stairs would pass a building inspection. Not even close.
You must have a good sense of equilibrity to walk those stairs. I wouldn't do it with my hands full

My Husband Found This On His Page
Definitely a split up in Amsterdam :). The "huisjesmelkers" (literally: housemilkers) who divide up a "grachtenpand" (old 4 to 5 story warehouses near canals) into apartments go to the most extreme ways of ripping the money of their renters.

Architecture critics seem to be uneasy about current trends, but they’ve been vocal about them. Veteran critic Rowan Moore wrote an article for the Guardian expressing his displeasure with the Ilona House in London.
He had choice words, describing the pinkish, rounded building as “plasticky” while calling out its “quite expensive” concrete surface.

That looks like those smaller stackable units. We had one in our new place. If it is let's give them extra kudos because those things weigh a metric tonne!
What tha????? How is that thi even attracted to the wall? Don't even think about going anywhere near that toilet while the washer is running. Death wish...
It’s standing on two pieces of angle iron sticking out of the wall. And that wall looks like concrete. Everything about this says “industrial location” to me. Different priorities than you’d use for residential.
Load More Replies...For Moore, it's all because of the "meanness and greed" of property developers who want the most floor area and pay the least. He bluntly stated that "ugly buildings have always been with us."
More says there is "no magic bullet" to fix the aesthetic situation. Still, he believes it would help if all professionals involved had one thing: "a stronger idea of what makes a building good."
Just Add A Ladder And Don’t Move Too Much On That Chair
Saw this somewhere else. Wife did this as a joke on her husband - it's his "man cave".
#Insane. Add a porch outside the front door instead - and you'd also get a little more space inside. Stuff like this is seen as a challenge by a large % of kids. I loved climbing anything back in the day, when I thought I was indestructible. I shudder when I recall some of it.
Just add a strip of carpet on the wall and a cat tree above. Your cats will love it.

These kinds of intersections look fine on a ceiling plan, but are nearly impossible to align irl. Best to avoid them altogether unless you are planning to make it a feature and then you need to plan for it very carefully.

Brutalist Architecture Should Come With A Free Power Washer
Looked it up. Aesthetically a case of one man's trash being another's treasure, but it was also built to be highly energy efficient. I rather like it especially when seen in its entirety though it looks distinctly odd in it's suburban setting among what looks like cod-historical buildings. https://www.oakpark.com/2021/11/24/oak-park-home-in-spotlight-on-new-wttw-show/

That would have required re-doing the tile, and good luck getting it to match. I'd bet this is an old house or apartment that originally had a larger stove.
Load More Replies...I got concerns about the non-professional replacement of a gas stove
I think I'd move the stove and hood to the left. Then put a narrow cart or table between the stove and counter.

Imagine if you're a bit chubby (no good for me, I'd prob get a bit wedged, lol). Maybe it's the Slender Man's house?
I am pretty slender and I am sure I cant sit with my knees joined and make any use of this toilet!
Load More Replies...Try to paint the walls in a darker tone with a light offset at the top and bottom...
I was always told mirror on the walls make rooms look bigger. Wait, no. (BTW, I HATE mirrored walls. They were done to DEATH back in the late seventies and on into the eighties and just look like c**p---plus they show dust and fingerprints way more than paint, so are yet ANOTHER thing that has to be cleaned regularly, and mirrors, as well as any glass-topped furniture---another fad I hate---are a B***H to keep clean.)
Load More Replies...Only solution is to take out the wall to the left and make an honest to God bathroom. This is ridiculous and I can guarantee the plumber that set that toilet was cussing the whole time.
I could just imagine needing to take a liquid dump very quickly and seeing a door marked "bathroom" , thinking the end is in sight, opening the door and having my heart fall at the even farther i have to go.
Saw This House Awhile Back. Thought It Was…. Intriguing
The answer to the question: how can I add a lot of roof to my house but almost no usable inside space?
If they put some of those thingies on the roof, they could use it as a climbing wall.
Umm
A kitten found me and we hung out for a bit. I had a dog, so I wasn't gonna take her home. We said good bye and I went into the house and up the stairs to my apt. The next morning I was leaving for work. Somehow she'd gotten into the house and was right outside my door in a space JUST LIKE THIS. Lol. I named her Millie.
Load More Replies...I would guess this is another example of dividing up large, old houses into apartments.

You Can Only Open This Drawer All The Way If You Open The Oven Door First. In My Own House
The range was sticks out because it was likely designed for a built in style range that is more or less flush with the end of the counter. Those are a bit more shallow. That would have worked fine really.
We have that situation too, with the house we're in now. The original stove that fit was replaced with a bigger one, a couple years before we moved in, that juts out and blocks a drawer and part of a cabinet below it. But the damned stove is working perfectly right now, refuses to finally break down, so we just can't justify replacing it yet. Not to mention a good stove can get pricey, and we just started our own business last year (doing really well, but we're still being very conservative about spending). But let me tell you, the day that we do, I will be taking PRECISE depth measurements and insisting on getting a stove that is flush with the counters so I can finally have that extra drawer and cabinet space!
Load More Replies...Was the stove replaced at some point? I feel like there might have been a smaller one originally, considering that this one is noticeably deeper than the counter.
Most likely. I experienced this problem once. It was silly but I became accustomed to it.
Load More Replies...Cut off the end of the drawer nearest the stove. Attach cut off piece to the "wall where the drawer retreats to. The drawer front will be shorter but the piece on the "will" will make it look ok. Problem solved.
"This Has To Be A Joke Post. Unless They're After Some Inheritance"
It is steep, but it looks sturdy. Think about it as a ladder with wide steps.
tey should not see it as a staircase, but as a very comfortable ladder. and go up and down in front of the steps.
Good Lord and I thought my basement and loft steps were bad. Somebody definitely doesn't know what they are doing and NOT to code. You wouldn't be able to sell until they were built to code here in the US.
Rather, it was designed to be installed rotated counter-clockwise by 90 degrees.
Load More Replies...This is a very common basement staircase. Its steep because their is not room for a fullsize staircase. Tje alternative is a ladder.
Yet there is plenty of riser which could have been cut to afford proper and uniform tread size. No excuse in this instance.

Whatever way these were built, they were far too close. Pointless balcony when it gets no sun.
And it's way too easy for your opposite neighbor to not only see into your place, but also to hop across that short distance between your two balconies, and actually get into your place.
Load More Replies...I used to live in the city centre, and all balconies were this close. I witnessed my neighbours getting married, pregnant, then gave birth without ever talking to them. Also she had issues with her staff (she owned a restaurant). Her husband gave up smoking at a certain time point, I knew because I could no longer smell the smoke. I am sure they know a lot about me too.
This is in Cologne, Germany. I know this building. These are not Balconys, they are Pathways to the Entrances.
The balconies are at the front, the one on the side are sidewalks to individual doors. Im not saying it is good, but its not as bad as it looks.
Salford, United Kingdom
I used to live by here. Salford Shopping Centre was a dangerous place to go, at one time. The whole place is an eyesore and needs demolishing and starting again. Where I used to live was three tower blocks all near each other. Because so many gay men lived there, it was known as ‘Fairy Towers’. And The Gays™️ who came up with the name.
Does the building tilts to the right? Or is this an illusion? And if not, is the tilt wanted or do we have to fear about the buildings integrity 🤔. Anyway, it's ugly as hell.
No I don’t think the building tilts. I lived near there about 15 years ago. It was just as ugly then.
Load More Replies...Like the block I was in for 8 months in the 90s (sans shopping Centre). There was so much crime inside that building, & my flat was burgled once, when I was at work. Noped it out of there. So glad I haven't lived in a City for decades.
If you guys think this is ugly you probably haven’t seen the cities in the usa 💀
Hostile Gay Architecture Shaming
For those who haven't realized, the colors have been added. It's actually just gray.
That’s terrible, it’s spreading misinformation >:(
Load More Replies...The Govt should spend the money they use for this barbaric endeavour, towards helping homeless peeps off the streets, instead of punishing/attacking them. #BeLikeFinland, world!
Those spikes are just the cruelty of entitled people showing through, and painting the pride colors is their hypocrisy joining the cruelty. If they were genuinely concerned about the homeless problem, they'd be trying to find ways to solve it at its CORE, get people permanently off the streets, and prevent anyone from ever becoming homeless in the first goddamned place. But no, they'd rather just shoo the homeless people on to another neighborhood and another and another until they find one that's not full of cruel entitled hypocrites (which is a unicorn, btw). Before you say why don't I have the live in my neighborhood, I live in the country. If there are homeless people living in the woods that's several acres behind my house, which is county land btw, then I have never seen them or heard them or noticed any evidence of them. So if they're not bothering me, why should I bother them? I have no reason to go into those woods, and they have no reason to come onto my property. As long as it stays like that, I can peacefully coexist.
Very few people can live in the woods without being destructive. They have no resources and no way to get rid of waste.
Load More Replies...For as much money as this cost to make "anti-homeless", they probably could have housed all of the homeless people that slept on it.

What In The Load Bearing Wall?! Seriously Why Not Center It Make It Straight And Call It A Day. On The Bright Side My Friends Cats Love The Cubby They Believe Was Made Just For Them
Not a load bearing wall in the traditional sense of holding the building up, but does need to be fairly solid as it has kitchen cabinets hanging from it. I'd have put locker cupboards on the top in the kitchen side myself, but it adss some storage space that would otherwise be wasted.
it is not load bearing, notice the sloped ceiling so you wouldn't have a load bearing wall go through it
Is this a mobile home? Those don't seem to need much in the way of load bearing walls.

Good use of shade creation to make the house less susceptible to heat and seems to about double the usable floor space downstairs in reasonable weather.
Yup. This massive overhang design is useful in the tropics. In the tropics, at 4- 5 pm, the sun is already pretty low in the sky, but the heat is still unbearable. Having massive overhang acting as a shade is a smart design.
Load More Replies...Maybe it's in Texas or some godawful hot place like that where they wanted permanent shade over many of the windows and exterior patios. But yes, looks ridiculous.

I think the base is just mirrored. The door is behind that white screen. The real question is why would you design some kind of optical illusion art piece and then tack on a set of standard deck stairs for the main entrance?
Load More Replies...Because of polar bears, maybe? Looks pretty fragile, balance-wise. Imagine if a party of peeps inside, sat on one side of the building?
Pretty sure, they have mirrors all around the lower part/base of the house. I think it's actually flat on the ground and shouldn't have balance issues.
Load More Replies...Whimsical, I like it and the shape probably helps snow slide off. I also like the mirrored front that gives an optical illusion.

I knew someone who built a house with a glass wall a bit like this. It was amazing at first but but the flaws soon showed themselves, especially appalling heat in summer and insane window-cleaning fees (dust, bird s**t.... it turns out that the more glass there is, the more obvious the dirt becomes). Then a new build went up nearby, the beautiful views suddenly included the new neighbours and yeah, privacy became an issue.

The Guest Bathroom In My Townhouse. The Window Placement Looks Ok From Outside, But Is A Big Failure For Guys Who Need To Use The Toilet
