It’s no secret that fashion is one hell of a merciless industry. I mean, how many times have we heard how unrealistic body image standards and high expectations have pushed girls to the brink of insanity? And although the stigma around plus-size models is fading away, the steps are so tiny, it’s barely visible.
Luckily, more and more women are willing to take matters into their own hands and rewrite fashion industry rules altogether. One plus-size model, Denise Mercedes, is doing just that. The size 14 Dominican model has launched a TikTok challenge titled “Style Not Size” with her friend Maria Castellanos. The two friends of different body types are putting on the same outfits, sharing the snack-sized videos to 1.7M followers, and showing that beauty comes in all shapes and forms. Their videos have now been liked a whopping 30.6M times, proving that healthy and happy women rule the world!

When Denise was 16 and a petite size 8, she started submitting her pictures to modeling agencies, but her height was too short for industry standards. She kept on posing for the camera as a side hobby until she turned 21 and had gone up to a size 14.
According to a statement on her website, Denise started putting outfits together and posting her cool photos on social media. She is an avid advocate of body positivity and runs a campaign #becauseitsmybody dedicated to women of all shapes and sizes. She now has collaborated with many fashion design brands and boutiques like Forever21, Target, and JCPenney.
There’s a huge gap between fashion industry standards and real-life women, who measure a size 16 around the waist on average in America. Moreover, plus-size girls represent 68% of fashion shoppers, according to Glamour, and yet a very small percentage of them actually work in the fashion industry.
Only in 2016, Ashley Graham became the first plus-size model on the cover of Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit edition and paved the way for models with curves. But the model herself told CBS Sunday Morning that she doesn’t like the word “plus-size” because it’s “so divisive to women” and puts them into categories.
Many women find the representation of diverse body types in media more assuring. In fact, this study by Florida State University found that women tend to experience deeper body satisfaction and retain a memory of plus-size models better than that of the thinner ones. It also pointed out that exposure to “unrealistic-sized media models” has a negative effect on the consumer’s “mental and physical health, including experiencing lower body satisfaction.”
she's crushing so many crop tops, and i just don't have the confidence for it. gorgeous
Perfect summer wear. And for haters, they are COVERED, no cleavage, no crack in the back, skirt long enough. Don't be jealous.
Personally, I think that this outfit suits slim girl better. No offense to curvy girl.
I think they both look great but I actually found most of the clothes really suited the curvier woman best. Maybe it is the style of clothes chosen. This just goes to show why we need models of all sizes coz clothes look very different on different sizes.
I think it's because the slimmer girl doesn't have a narrow waist, so form-fitting clothes meant to show off the mid-section or hips curve just don't look as good on her. She looks great in the pics where she's wearing clothes that are more loose or create the illusion of a narrower waist. Clothes really need to be designed with different body types in mind, it's not just the size that matters. That's why rich/famous people have everything tailored.
Load More Replies...They both look great but most curvier/plus size women do not have dimensions remotely close to Denise. Her waist is pretty small and not much larger than her slim friends...then she has a larger just even for a plus size person and wide hips. I'm plus size and my widest point is my waist, my hips are the narrowest and these clothes would not be flattering on my figure at all. I wouldnt call this 'style, not size' ...because the curvier girl is the ideal size/proportions for curvy.
very realistic point of view. Their photos are shown with good intentions but they miss their own point
Load More Replies...I think average person does not look like Denise either. So what's the point here? Clothes does look differently on different bodies, no kidding! What an idea.
I am size 10, a curvy girl, without curves, the clothes would never look like her. The curved models also surpass the normal woman, they usually have a very small waist, and they have a slim woman's face.
Load More Replies...When I was a teenager, I remember my mother pulled a box out of the attic to look through. I side were some fashion magazines from right before she got married (so pre-1941). Inside, every picture of an outfit showed it on three models: one tall and thin, one average size, and one plus size. My mother said they used to do it that way so everyone could get a better idea how the cut and drape might look on them. It made perfect sense to me back then, and I don’t understand why, in this age of supposed acceptance of all body sizes, the fashion industry doesn’t start doing it again.
guys. the point of the article was not to compare the two lovely women and put them against each other. the point was to demonstrate that all bodies can rock an outfit. saying the curvy girl rocked it more is not any better than saying the skinny girl did because you're still setting up unhealthy comparisons and judgements. the point is you can wear what makes you happy no matter your body type. and those of you saying they should've compared girls with other body types, these are friends! these are the bodies they have to work with! the point is that your own body is good enough!
I think the same too... Stop the comparisons, stop saying one is more beautiful than the other... We are all beautiful in our own way...
Load More Replies...Dear Denise, You have a waist to kill for. This is not "average" by any means, and very different from a typical plus-sized person's experience. Still gorgeous session tho.
Yes, she has no belly and a very toned ab area. Really quite a beautiful figure.
Load More Replies...Even though the larger girl is a size 14, she can get away with wearing the majority of outfits because she still has a relatively flat belly and no bulges below. Her size mostly comes from the width of her hips and thighs, with her big boobs gives the hourglass figure. I'm only a size 10-12 but I'd look terrible in them because my belly is hideous and bulges out in the wrong way.
It’s not fair tho, cuz she’s fit, just curvy. All the crop tops look great on a flat stomach, no matter what their size. I don’t have that luxury!
I'm not hating on anyone, but it said that the bigger girl is a size 14. I can't believe that, because she's bigger than me and I wear 16 to 18. She looks great, but she's bigger than a 14.
"Two conventionally attractive women prove that it's less about the clothes than it is about having good skin and symmetry."
I think the real point here is: know how to dress for your body type. The same clothes won't look equal on different body types, but if you dress yours appropriately, you can look sharp yourself.
Dear bored pandas, I think it would be good if we stopped comparing girls and saying one is prettier than the other. Be it the girl with the short hair or the girl with the long hair. They are both unique in their own way 🥰
I think some of the color choices are wonderful and very flattering on both women. A couple of the solid color dresses would look a lot better on anyone if they were small prints. I don’t know anyone who would look good in a couple of the outfits because of the colors, like the Band-Aid dress.
These are inspiring, beautiful girls with beautiful hearts obviously trying to do some good for the world. I'm so impressed. You know, I think some things looked better on the slim girl and other things better on the curvy girl. But that's okay, there's a reason that the world has a trillion different options for clothes and that because not everything is supposed to look good on everyone. But hey, just sayin, these girls looked good on pretty much all of it. Nice job girls.
Thanks for doing this. I think it really helps to see both options. For the curvier women it is possible it will silence some of those negative voices in their head (or their families... LOL)
Half of those clothes should not be worn by anyone! C'mon girls, there are tons of better looking clothing out there.
The girls both exude positivity and comfort in their own presence. It isn't to do with the clothes, it's very much to do with their attitudes <3
There is no such thing as one size fits all, neither does one style suit all.
While I think the curvier girl looks good... I still don't like this trend where for the sake of patting each other on the back we praise looks going into unhealthy levels of body fat or BMI - whether overweight or underweight. If an ethical dietician has a job to do helping a person lose or gain weight then it means the person has reached a point where it is not a case of cute or not but the case of healthy or not. My friend almost died last year due to compliacations stemming directly from their excess weight.
I am curvier and am glad to see this. After reading the comments, its like no one sees a model that looks like them. We need to continue encouraging stuff like this. The industry needs to know what we want!
It is quite obvious, the curvier girl is a model. My eyes always go straight to her, even if some clothes do look better on the other girl. But the curvy girl's presence is just SO much stronger.
The only thing I want to say is, this is pretty cool. Not like the lady who was targeting celebrities, by attempting to dress like them. Some people were very rude and unfiltered. All of these looks were amazing. Some were a little awkward I admit, but they made it work because of how confident they are. Both women are beautiful and putting themselves out there for the world to judge. Don't be rude, give constructive criticism.
They both look equally lovely in their own unique way. Very cute outfit combos across the board.
So beautiful! It just goes to show that you own the clothes, they don't own you. Everyone should be proud of the body given to them by God.
A big part of it seems to be the curvier woman exudes a sexuality and smoldering quality that makes most of the garments look sexy and great. The slender woman's body wasn't dressed to make her shape interesting, and virtually none of her expressions are trying to draw in the camera i.e. the customer/viewer.
love these two very different beauties! also love the 90s fashions. most of these outfits I wore in high school. <3
Very clever project. Both gorgeous, in their way, but smart is way more important. Good job!
This is great, they are both beautiful. Anyone who body shames either of them is dead to me.
The curvy one should really be a plus size model. She's so gorgeous!
She IS a plus size model. That exact wording is in the second paragraph.
Load More Replies...They did a fat curvy girl with a "straight" figured thin girl.... Why not do a curvy hour glass thin girl too? Instead.
Would be more accurate because then they would have the same body shape, just not the same size.
Load More Replies...Although both women appeared content to happy with their look, only the physically healthy woman looked right.
The plus size woman looks stunning. I always judged myself, in middle school, for being... larger... than others. I’m still kinda touchy but I’ve begun to accept myself. For the people who say ... oh, what a concept. That lady’s too curvy, that ones too thin. That’s what caused my insecurity, and I felt horrible for five years. I kept it bottled up. If you’re insecure about your body, don’t be. You’re beautiful no matter if you’re size 0 or 14. Nobody’s perfect, but we’re all unique. If anyone calls my comment insignificant, sure, it may be. But I’m saying this because in grade 6, I needed this. If it only helps one person, it will mean the whole world to me, young women, if I can help you. hlougheed1132@gmail.com to email me. Not certified but I have experience.
I love this! Two gorgeous women, and the focus is not on the number of the size, but on the way it fits! Gorgeous every outfit I love it
Most of those clothes are ugly af. Poses are cringe worthy and they look pissed off half of the time.
I don't know if you've noticed, but almost every plus-size model has a really narrow waist and a flat stomach.
IMO the plus size lady looks far better in the majority of the outfits. The small one has no curves. Women should be curvaceous and this is coming from a size 4-6 all my life until medication & menopause hit my system. Now I’m a lumpy apple shaped woman who couldn’t carry any of those outfits. Gotta figure how to get off the meds...lol
cool post, and I really love all the clothes they were wearing, esp #10!!!
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder. When one learns to appreciate all forms of beauty, one becomes more beautiful inside and out!
I don't get this, the clothes look the same, their body shapes are different.
This just makes me wonder why on earth do catwalks only have shapeless thin women?? Both these two are beautiful, and the curves make it pop
This norm should be followed in all fashion world.. To dress in plus and petite both.. The manequin figure confuses us ladies a lot given we are voluptous in size and a majority of us are voluptous.. It gives us false body image.. We should be represented equally with petite girls.. It will make us choosing the right clothes easier and we wouldnt waste our money on ill fitting clothes.. Money is a very very important resource.
Curvy chic won every time! Maybe it’s time for me to embrace my curves!
I'm with Foxxy. The curvier girl, Denise looked better in most of the outfits than her friend, Maria. A lot of the difference, I in my opinion, had to do with skin tone and the fact that that Maria had little to no curves at all. Maybe if it was 12/16 size it would have been better more effective, but Denise has made her point. Now imagine if your a size 22 or even more and you want to look nice but don't want to wear a mumu or giant gross floral patterned material and you are screwed right royally. Style not Size is the way to go - we all have the right to wear what we want, what makes us feel good not like we're freaks for being outside the "norm" of so-called accepted sizes.
Good on your girls for doing this and sharing. Looks like you have had a lot of fun playing with the different looks.
OMG, I liked all the clothes better on the curvy girl! The proportions of her body work great in her favor, which makes her curves look really good! Only #32 (top) looked bad on both... but that's all a matter of opinion...
I think they are awesome but I think curvy girl got this OH YEAH :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
They both have very attractive figures. Neither is to thin or too thick, they simply have different body types. Now, do the same photo shoot with an underweight person and an overweight person the results would be drastically different.
I love this. It just goes to show that all types of people can look good and we as a community need to support that more. Especially The plus sized community, it almost seems to be shamed when it shouldn’t be. The shaming causes things like eating disorders so I think that it is important to empower all women no matter their appearance
It's amazing how the human body can vary as compared to other species. Really shows how much we are a new species that hasn't yet achieved a unified and stable shape, and how much evolution still lies ahead of us.
Why are they half naked? Ugly outfits don't suit them no matter their size.
First of all, it's pointless to have a "body positivity" post and lie about the models sizes. The smaller woman I'd believe is a 14. The bigger one is at least a 22 if not bigger. That said, I think they both look great. They're not fat, just curvy, which is how most women look, that's how we're built. More designers need to design attractive clothes for women with big butts and thighs because I'd imagine it's pretty difficult to find bottoms with that shape. Also all women aren't big butt/big thigh/small waist. Some of us have narrow hips, slender legs and not as defined waist. Designers need to design for real women, not emaciated models who might make great clothes hangers but don't represent us.
You can be overweight, you just have to have a waist. I was the thinnest girl in my family but had NO WAIST. My sisters were always flabbergasted that it was considerably easier for them to find a flattering bathing suit than me. Now I'M overweight too and still don't have a waist so imagine shopping now. 😡
Loved it, both of them look great! They're gorgeous, no matter what thery're wearing.
What a wonderful display of friendship!! I think a lot of the outfits actually suited the curvier woman better but media has me imagining it only on the slender friend, who is also very lovely. It's not a beauty thing here but a comparison of the ideals that we've been forced upon us all our lives. I have four daughters who want to be "strong" when they grow up. I don't care how they look PERSE but this comparison really opened my eyes. Curvy girls are beautiful. Skinny girls are beautiful. Girls are beautiful. We're all beautiful. Well done!
I love these two! They're both different. One is more lean and flat cheated with small hips and a pale skin tone and one is a bit more wide with big hips and chest and a darker skin tone. The clothing looks great on both of them, even if some of them looked better on one or the others I'm glad they're supporting body confidence :)
In general, I prefer the way Denise looks in most clothes. With tiny exeption, the bikini tops. My pet peeve are perfectly fitted bras and fitted swimsuits. And those weren't. Maria's chest is much smaller, and she is able to pull off pretty much any bra, because gravity is not as cruel on her as on bigger chested girls like myself or Denise. Triangle bikini top won't give you comfort, nor lift or security of properly fitted swimwear.
The reason why most of the clothes look better on the curvy girl is because current society likes the hourglass shape on women best, and it's often recommended in fashion videos to try your best to obtain that shape. (not me tryna hate on other shapes or women, just stating facts. times are always changing and so are general tastes. doesn't mean everyone agrees either)
Agreed. Everyone wants to be "thick" nowadays. And now skinny shaming is acceptable.
Load More Replies...Curvy girl owns her body more than slender girl, who seems to feel insecure a bit. they are both gorgeous, I hope they had a lot of fun with this :)
I can't blame Maria. These comments are gross. Someone said that she looked like a teenager, while denise looked like a "real woman". Wtf.
Load More Replies...Maybe I’m being bias because I’m curvy myself, but I found the curvier woman to be sexier, both are beautiful, but a curvy woman is something else.
The slender girl (I don’t know he name, I feel bad for calling her that) smiles a lot more than her friend. She has such a Nice smile
I was born in the wrong time. I am built more like the heavier girl only taller. I never had the confidence she does and always tried to hide my curves. She looks fabulous in so many of these outfits that I would not have the nerve to wear. I am older now and it's too late for form fitting stuff. dammit.
I am a big girl and I am very happy to see the curvy girl in those clothes. Gives me more confidence. That being said, slim girl is pretty - I can't really say that slim is better or curvy is better. They are both beautiful. Girls - size doesn't matter. Health does. Just find the right clothes for your body type and ask your man if he likes it. Men always tell the truth about a girl's clothes.
dont listen to your man, ask yourself if YOU like it! Who cares what they think?
Load More Replies...Both of these beauties are MURDERING all of those dresses. Well done, ladies!
What kind of arrogant comment is this? Real women come in different shapes and sizes. You should know that by now, Granny.

I think "curvy girl" may be a 14 on top, but her lower half looks WAY bigger. I wear a 14 and she is definitely much larger than I am in the hips & thighs.
Reality check: The curvy girl will die sooner since she's over weight. Facts dont care about your feelings.
The thought behind this is great, and both girls look gorgeous, but most people who are heavier are not as fortunate as the one shown here to have the extra weight, for lack of a better word, be transferred where it looks best.
I agree the clothes looked better suited on the curvier girl. And honestly probably more realistic for most of us.
Not everyone is chunky. Some are slim, others aren't. But being slim is still realistic for some people. Like being chunky is.
Load More Replies...Ok ok... I'm starting to see why Curvy girls were preferred in the past.

As usual no surprise on how dumb as f**k people on bp are. Hopefully the virus gets you all so medical resources can be saved for those that give a f**k about their health and diet
I think it's good to remember that Marilyn Monroe was a size 12. The most iconic feminine female in modern history. Had curves. The curvy girl in these photos looks better in these clothes 8 to 10 over the skinny girl. It's the difference between the woman wearing the clothes, and the clothes posing on a girl.
The plus size girl looks good in the clothes but her health is in danger and you can not dismiss that fact. High cholesterol and blood pressure are only the beginning.
Lynden, being obese isn't unhealthy just b/c that's the consensus-conclusion of physicians in general practice, cardiology, orthopedics, endocrinology and oncology! Besides, no obese person has ever lost weight! Also, hetero women on these sites are always praising the fat men they like, they don't spend time drooling over ripped and shredded guys, instead they tout their love of men with curves, flab and beer bellies!
