From mid-September to mid-October of 2020, I tweeted a fact about every country in the world on my Twitter account, @FactBuffet.
Why did I do it? Well, partly due to COVID-related boredom but also a burning desire to spread positive information about the world during a time when people are so isolated from (and even disliking towards) other countries. It turns out that every country in the world has interesting and admirable tidbits.
Here are 50 of the facts I tweeted. Prepare to have your minds blown and to add a couple of items to your Bucket List.

That's impressive. It's good when people realize the worth of women is equal to that of men.
Not to brag but... even in India, as soon as it regained independence, we had equal voting rights for men and women too.
This doesn't mean much though. The Constitution is only as good as the people who interpret and enforce it. Japan's Constitution also has a gender equality clause while UK doesn't even have a Constitution, but it's pretty clear which country has better gender equality.
Well the US did do that same thing 4 years prior to Mongolia...
Load More Replies...That's wonderful! Did they have the right to vote before that? The U.S. gave women the right to vote in 1920. Granted, the U.S. Constitution should have done that in the first place but still...
Mongolia’s rad! Look up the eagle girls hunting in those areas. Amazing brown and golden eagles
well yeah, when you have experience you know how to do things better, look at South Korea and Taiwan, they had SARS years ago, so they knew how to deal with this one. Death Tolls leads to learning how to prevent it again. The issue is when you havent faced it before, how you deal with it, especially given different political, infrastructure, geography, etc from different countries that makes it hard to take the plans of one and replicate it in another.
And it’s especially hard when you have a 🍊🍄💩 “leading” your country...
Load More Replies...The US also devised a plan. Obama left the plan to Trump, who threw it out.
Of course he did. I’m surprised the racist retard didn’t “accidentally” burn down the White House because the Obamas had lived there.
Load More Replies...I'm pretty sure every country has developed pandemic response strategies way before COVID. I know for certain the UK did, it's whether the government chooses to follow it or not & when that makes all the difference.
And I am still laughing of Bolsonaro, and crying because I'm Brazilian.
As an American, I sympathize deeply! 🇧🇷🇺🇸🇧🇷🇺🇸🇧🇷

Unfortunately, these extremely busy women are still expected to take on the full load of a stay at home wife and mother. Socially, husbands are expected to not help, looked down on if they do, and often, it is looked down on to hire servants. At least it was like this a few years ago. These women are powerhouses with the loads they are carrying.
This is due to the genocide and unfortunately it doesn't mean women are treated like equals in Rwanda.
As a Rwandan citizen and woman, I can assure you that its not because of the Genocide that we have more women in the parliament. It because of gender equality and we are treated as EQUALS everywhere.
Load More Replies...Sadly, the direct reason for this is that during the conflict that Is mentioned in many other comments and other tribal genocides since then in Rwanda, men, boys and even male babies were slaughtered in greater numbers then women, and Rwanda is suffering from a dearth of men. While women were critical in ending the killing, they were the only adults left after years of mindless, senseless slaughter.
FACT: Perpetrators killed more women and children in the 1994 Genocide against Tutsis because they didn't want any more people giving birth to Tutsi babies or a child to live to tell a story about what happened. Secondly, they were actually defenseless.
Load More Replies...Good, at least women (mostly) tend to be more compassionate and (again, mostly), non tribal. This, for those who don't get that comment, is the country where two predominant tribes (Hutu and Tutsi), decided in 1994 for whatever reason (mostly extremist idiots) to have a small conflict. This cost 800000 (yup, nearly a million) mostly innocent people their lives - hacked and clubbed to death in about 100 days ..... Men were in charge and stoking the fires of this madness. It was the women of Rwanda who calmed the situation and finally brought reconcilliation. Maybe something could be learned from this by the powers that be in the USA ....
Naaah... As an American, I can tell you that pitifully few Americans are even aware of how we’re seen in the world or care.
Load More Replies...No, not yay. Yay only if they are good at work people, not because they are women...
Load More Replies...huge salute to these women and the few husbands who help in housework while the women are busy

Prague Astronomical Clock built in 1410. 3rd oldest clock in the world, and the oldest still operating clock.
The clock in Stralsund from 1394 is the oldest but not working I just found out. Those clocks are beautoful, thanks for the fact!
Load More Replies...There is one in Estonia which was built in 1684. The year is nothing special, but what makes it special, is that the numbers. The numbers are in Roman numerals and 4 is written IIII, not IV Clock_of_t...ce1ca7.jpg
The youtube channel called "Honest Guide" just recently posted a video called "The hardest clock in the world to read" which explains how to read it (shocking, I know). I've lived in Prague all my life (writing this comment being a couple hundred meters from the clock, actually) and I've never known how to read it. :) Highly recommend, if you're interested.
I lived in Prague for 10 years and never read that clock once :))
Load More Replies...World's oldest working clock is in Salisbury cathedral. The 'not assassins at all, just enthusiastic tourists' forgot to mention that. It's so old that it dates from before clock faces were thought up. If you ever get a chance to visit while a guide is there to explain it all, it's fascinating, and so clever.
The worlds oldest surviving working clock is the faceless clock dating from 1386, or possibly earlier, at Salisbury Cathedral, Wiltshire, UK. It was restored in 1956, having struck the hours for 498 years and ticked more than 500 million times.
Load More Replies...Go in winter. Very hard to get near it in high tourist season.

My favorite fact about Bhutan is that instead of using GDP (Gross Domestic Product) as their country’s measure of success, they use GDH (Gross Domestic Happiness). Way to rock it Bhutan!
But did they all live? Seems like if your focusing on quantity here, quality is going to suffer.
How many trees did you plant? I'm sure more of their trees lived than of yours.
Load More Replies...Whenever I see news about mass planting of trees, i wonder how many of them made it. I've read that they often die because young trees actually do much better when planted in close proximity to older trees.
That’s really interesting. Do you remember where you read that?
Load More Replies...David Retsler, you can disagree with someone without resorting to name-calling.
Israel still uses a system where each party has a letter of the hebrew alphabet as their symbol, you take one card with the party you wants letter, put it in a envelope, seal it, and then place then you leave the privacy room and go to the room with the box where you put the envelope inside while a poll watcher sees. Was done because many of so many Jewish refugees from so many countries arriving in 1949 and just before, that they needed a way to make voting simple. They still use it.
And when direct elections for mayors was instituted, the same system continued, but the little slip of paper with the letter became a different color -- yellow instead of unbleached i.e. off-white paper. So one puts two slips of paper in the envelop: one 'white' and one yellow.
Load More Replies...But if someone lost their marbles they would be yelling VOTER FRAUD!!!
The Doge of old Venice was voted in with stones. Each person running was assigned a bowl and all eligible voters placed a stone in the bowl of the people the voter thought were qualified. Still one voter per person, but instead of the voter only having 1 vote, the voter can vote for however many people they like, but only once per candidate. Statistically, you get a better overview of who is really favored, and you don't have to vote for the least of all evils, like the 2 party system in the US.
Our system would work better if the other parties (American Independent Party, Green Party, Peace and Freedom Party, to name the largest alternatives) had greater representation. One of the things that many Americans don’t know is that the Republican Party started off as the liberal party, and the conservative party was the Whigs. Eventually the Whigs disappeared, the Democrats came into existence, and the Republican party became the more conservative group.

Exactly, that's the one. I am constantly hiding my chuckle if people from the New World tell us that something from the 1800's is "very old".
Load More Replies...Since Hemingway lived mostly during the 20th century, it's not that strange that he mentionned it... The restaurant was already pretty old at that point in time.
There is a noodle restaurant- Owariya- in Kyoto that has been open since before 1500.
Big deal. SIftskeller in Salzburg, Austria opened in the early 800s. Not 1800, the 800s.
Well, there is a restaurant in Regensburg, Germany that has been in operation for 850 years, so...
I guess it would have been recognized if Hemingway had written about it...

Everyone of the 38,000 inhabitants of the country, that is. Still requires a big castle though.
In the picture you see all the inhabitants of the country. It is one of the smallest countries in the world.
WTF, I got a warning, "Your posting comments too quickly. Slow down!" Is that a thing? How strange!!!!!
Well, there are only like two dozen people in Luxembourg to begin with!
In Sofia Bulgaria, Eastern Orthodox Christians, Roman Catholics, Muslims and Jews can all pray in their respective places of worship just across the street from one another.
I went to Singapore a few years ago and in one street there was a Buddhist Temple, Catholic Church, Hindi Temple and 2 other religious houses that I can't remember, all beautifully decorated and nobody cared which one you worshipped in (or just visited to be nosey as I did!) Why can't more countries - and people specifically - be as tolerant? Shame.
you have this is many places around the world. There are no less than 14 such examples in NYC alone, and at least 20 in Israel, not to mention in several other places. This isnt a big deal, where I live you have a synogue with a Hebrew Day School across the street from a Mosque with an Islamic School.
Orinigally, the great mosque of Damascus was open to all three religions, Muslims, Christians and Jews. To make this possible again all around the world would be a fine goal for the years to come.
My synagogue in Omaha, Nebraska literally shares a campus with a mosque and a church. We have one plot of land, individual buildings connected by a walkway (and frequent events where members of each house of worship will get together ie on holidays), and a common building is currently under construction as well. I'm glad that this isn't actually so unique. We all have so much more in common than anything that separates us.
Even in my city, there is a mosque and gurduwara almost side by side. In fact, recently in a vlog, they paid tribute to a Muslim man from my place who was taking care of a church for decades. He maintained the dignity of the place as well as its maintenance. It was beautiful to watch.
In Turkey, it is very common, as in Istanbul, Mardin...You can see a mosque, a synagogue and a church in just one photo frame.
In Trinidad & Tobago there are Churches, Mosques & Temples(Hindu) & Bars all in the same community. Sometimes just across or down the street from each other.
I think the world would be a better place if more politicians were scientists instead of lawyers...Or reality TV "stars"...

I had read that somewhere else. They probably don't need too many domain names so this works out great.
Absolutely not. The hours you have to teach children are so limited. There are so many unbelievable important things children need to learn. Teach them about critical thinking (I mean the real thing, not what universities today are offering). Teach them life skills and about technology etc. Chess is absolutely great for the brain but so are many other things that are much more relevant to somebody's life.

It should be noted that Norway is well known to have fairly lax laws on Therapeutic Use Exemptions for certain steroidal drugs usually used to treat ailments such as asthma, meaning that a lot of their athletes claim to suffer from asthma, allegedly to gain potential advantage over other nations that have stricter rules governing TUEs.

Load More Replies...I watched a documentary on this a long time ago. It was built in a really windy place, Dubai I believe. The building is shaped to help guide wind towards the turbines. And the bridges are designed to expand and contract since the two buildings will shake and shift a little differently than one another in high winds.
These turbines rarely spin though and i suspect they might need electricity to function, not vice versa
Anything is better than The Apprentice.
Load More Replies...Yes I can imagine that very well. Poetry is a big part of the culture in the Middle East. In Iran we have a popular party game where somebody recites a double verse and the next person has to recite a double verse that begins with the last letter of the previous one. The real fun begins when you run out of proper poetry and have to improvise :)
Literacy and Poetry are so important for civilizations to flourish!
That is commendable. As a woman I will say they have a little more work to do on other fronts, but that is quality TV right there...
Here, am I sitting in my tin coin, Far above the world, Planet Earth is blue.

It was called the Tree of Ténéré. In 1973 it was hit by a drunk truck driver. Goes to prove that you will ALWAYS find something to hit when driving drunk.
Drunk drivers are drawn to things, which is why if you have to pull off the road for a flat tire (which happened to my brother when he was driving me home to San Francisco on his way home a couple of counties north), it’s best to get out of your vehicle while waiting for the tow truck. They used to tell you to wait in the car, but now they tell you to wait away from the car.

Load More Replies...Looks like a pretty heavy currency stone on the picture. Not very practical.
The idea was in order to have your stone you needed favours from a lot of friends and family to help you carve it, transport it from one island to another then set it in place, and doing this was akin to announcing "I have lots of resources/wealth". You never actually moved the stone once it was set up, the history and ownership of the stones was part of the oral tradition of the island. Interestingly enough, there was a big problem with inflation at one point and the size of the stones got ridiculous.
Load More Replies...Interesting thing about those stone currencies is, they don't need to be moved when they change hands. Everyone knows and accepts who the owner of each one is.
I have two carved teak wood pictures of the Yap stones and warring islanders brought back from Saipan in the 50’s.
I want that stone, cos if it's currency, it must be worth a bundle!
Ok, so in the picture you can see the country's richest man. Or, rich people can get stoned.
A number of small countries issue coins to the collectors market. I remember a tiny gold coin with Nixon on it from years ago.
Considering that Peru is the one to give us this gem of stews, I heartily agree they should study their 2000-4000 heirloom varieties.
It's good to know at least some countries actually focus on important things. The world would be sad and hungry without potatoes.
They show it on the Zac Efron Netflix documentary show. It’s really interesting.
New Zealand also has what is known as the "queerest parliament in the world"! :D
So much else that New Zealand has going for it, this fact is a fairly lame one; the New Zealanders had nothing to do with it. How about the way they outlawed guns in one go. Only Prime Minister to nurse her newborn in Parliament, IIRC. So much more.
We haven't outlawed guns, just anything semi-automatic, pump-action shotguns and anything with a large-capacity magazine. We have a licencing policy which has also been tightened. This was in response to the act of terrorism against two Mosques where 51 people died. Our prime minister refused to say his name so most of our news followed. Unless we actively looked for his name we don't know it. No one in my family does.

I had no idea! Not a great movie, but the set was cool! I wanna go there!
My gf was part of an episode of a reality TV show filmed there. What is sad is that they took one of the nice beaches in Malta and it was never made accessible afterwards. Also they do not have a license for Popeye anymore so they avoid to name things as much as they can. (I lived in Malta for 7 years)
You can still access the swimming spot from the pier that's on the left side of the bay. And here's so many beautiful beaches... Slugs Bay, Tuffieha etc.

Her victory came as a surprise and after she'd done the job of kicking the old and disastrous former mayor out off office, her "allies" (aka the local members of the left wing party, as bad and corrupted as the local right wing, since it is all Mafia Land there) seemingly put the pressure on her until she gave up for "personal health reasons". A real shame.

I find it oddly amusing that FactBuffet spent so much time hunting this trivia. Another oddity is how many people came along with negative trivia to add. Most of "Buffets" writing was interesting and unknown to me. I love folks like Buffet
To be fair, since 2014 Paris' mayor is a woman, and she just started her 2d mandate last year. It has to be noticed that France's capital city can do that while the whole country, until now, has remained utterly incapable of supporting a female leader. Prior to her, from 2001 to 2014, Paris had a gay mayor who also had been reelected.
Surely there’s a more interesting fact about Tonga than their time zone, right?
It has 169 islands, only 36 of which are occupied; 70% of its occupants live on the main island, Tongatapu. Better?

This is a complicated/ fascinating story - the jester's name was Jesse Bogdonoff and he was accused of mismanaging millions of dollars worth of Tonga's money.
What was a jester doing with any money or control of any money. I'd blame the president for letting the jester near anything financial other than his own personal finances.

You’re Malmö? I’m guessing your *from* Malmö. My grandmother’s people were from there...they’re the reason I have blonde hair (less blonde now than I was as a teen; as a child it was just a colorless white).

For Bosnia fact I'd rather pick the guy who is trying to prove that we have ancient pyramids near Visoko, other facts I can pick are more on the bizarre, strange and idiotic side. 😄
You forgot to mention that his name is Hubertus von Hohenlohe and that he is a nobleman deriving from a German principal dynasty.
He was also the only athlete representing Mexico at the 2010 and 2014 Winter Olympics.
Colombia had one athlete in Vancouver 2010. She wasn't Colombian as far as I remember she was American, we also had four athletes in pyongyang 2018. We don't have snow 😊😊 so it was a big surprise and pride for us. 🇨🇴
Tourists insist on this "look" for the bananas they buy in HAWAII!, so the delicious, smaller, occasionally brown-spotted, local bananas are denied popularity for these imports, shipped, wastefully, all the way to Hawaii...how sad and crazy are we humans - when out of touch with our true nature. We are Nature.
Not fair if you have an enormous head or big breasts. But still fun to cheer on everyone in line ahead of you.
It would be nice if people wouldn't get their panties in a twist over some innocent fun. No one is getting stigmatized and no one will develop an eating sisorder over this. It's harmless fun and it doesn't offend anyone. No one is forced to go through this gate. It would be nice if we'd stop searching for things to get offended by. Could we make this a 2021 goal? "Let's not get offended by silly things that a normal human being wouldn't even notice as offensive."
Okay, let me put it this way: Why should some people get a discount because they are thinner than others? Obviously, more fit people are going to usually be thinner, but some people (even fit people) are bigger because they have bad metabolisms or thyroid problems. Some people are thin with no work at all. It doesn't make sense that something that is out of many people's control gets rewarded. Also, I know you said no one is going to develop an eating disorder over this, but this is exactly the type of thing that would have triggered me. I relapsed many times because of stupid crap like this, mostly when people are rewarded or considered better because they weigh less.
Load More Replies...I don't like this one... some people can gain weight for completely unrelated reasons than their health (some serious medical conditions force you to gain a lot of weight) and the whole concept of this is kind of gross.

Leviticus 26:1 ESV: “You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect an image or pillar, and you shall not set up a figured stone in your land to bow down to it, for I am the Lord your God.
The principle there is to avoid idolatry. The cross isn’t worshipped, it’s a symbol.

I don't see why that comment was so offensive. I think "most of" would be slightly preferrable myself, though definitely nowhere near enough to take the time to comment on it. It seems an innocuous comment that I would expect would simply remain at 0 votes.

Mozambique 🇲🇿 my home country. Unfortunately there is a lot of illegal poaching to sell the elephant teeth to the Asian Market(mostly China,)
Since 2019 you can book a hunting trip to Botswana to kill elephants for the fun of it.
actually since the 1990's. And guess what? it is credited with Botswana having such a glut of elephants for years they needed to cull the population. The money from those hunts went into Elephant Breeding programs and anti-poaching forces. In fact Zambia and others have since copied it. THis is how they fund elephant preservation.
