Turns Out, TSA Employees Have A Secret Facebook Group With 18,000 People And Here Are Some Of Their Worst Vents
A few months ago, an investigation uncovered a secret Border Patrol Facebook group. The group was filled with vulgar, sexist and racist posts that were made by federal border agents. From an obscene illustration featuring Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez to jokes about migrant deaths, the content left many people completely baffled. And if you think that group was bad, well, as it turns out, TSA employees are no better.
Recently, NBC Washington revealed that Transportation Security Administration employees have their own Facebook group with 18,000 current and former employees called TSA Breakroom. The employees used it to vent about their managers, coworkers and of course the travelers who, in some cases, were described as 'idiots'. Posts were filled with hate, frustration, crudeness and racial stereotypes. While the group is no longer available, NBC Washington managed to gather some of the absolutely outrageous posts.
Even though TSA made a statement to News4 I-Team in which they stated that the page "is not affiliated with TSA" and "an employee's off-duty internet use must not adversely reflect on TSA", the posts clearly demonstrate problems within the institution. An audit by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security Office of Inspector General cited staff turnover, shortages, pay and “excessive use of overtime” as causes of lower job satisfaction and morale.

I don't think that is that bad. Just being realistic & funny about what the gloves look like.
I once stumbled upon the crime scene photo of Nicole Brown Simpson. Her throat was deeply cut. When you think about the reality of what the TSA agent is joking about, it's not funny. They are joking about a situation where a woman was killed by her abusive ex-husband.
Load More Replies...Well, its not just "I didn't have to do that at the other airport". When we first entered the area, my husband was told he didn't have to remove his shoes because he's older than 75. Then when we get to the scanners, he was told he had to take off his shoes. He just took off his shoes and rolled with it. I think it's good that they have a place they can vent to their peers. Stress comes with every job and if you don't vent, you could end up doing twenty to life. (That's a joke, son, and the reason I took an early retirement. Not from the TSA, just another place where I had to deal with jerks.)
True. Or it's a disease and poor kid for that. Or she's just fat and poor her that her parents won't/can't start her life on a proper diet. I'm not saying they do it on purpose, but in any case, poor kid.
Load More Replies...You do understand the person could have a disability or something, right? Get a life, mind your own business and stop cyberbullying strangers. Show a little respect. You don't know her, you don't know her life or her story.
Yes and she also might not. If she did she’d be in an adapted buggy. Maybe, just maybe, her parents are a******s and over feed her.
Load More Replies...I had a student who was bloated from the medication that keeps her alive. Because of jerks like this poster and commenters, she was afraid to take the 4th grade swimming class that is required. The swimming coach assured the Mom that there would be no bullying. She also sent the mom a form for a fancy boutique store in the small town. That provided at two-piece that fit and covered like a 1 piece (school requirement) for free. They had never been able to find a swimsuit that fit due to the child not having normal proportions due to the medication. PE coach and I had a conversation with the one potential bully about how he needed to not say anything. I called another student's parents about the potential problem because their son was very empathetic but socially awkward. We gave him encouraging phrases to say and strict instructions to not say anything about people's bodies or suits. The little girl ended up having a blast amazing what compassion can do.
1. taking pics of kids so you can laugh at them 2. making assumptions about said kid so you can laugh at them. 3. being an a*****e
After the birth of my son the arthritis in my knees decided to break completely loose and I couldn't run after him or pick him up. I had to keep him in the stroller while we were out and about for that reason. He could run around all he wanted at home and in playschool. I did get a few comments but a pithy "get stuffed and mind your own business" usually got rid of them.
Don't judge - we don't know if that child has something wrong? my friends son was big when he was younger - as in very tall - and people used to tell her all the time that he should be out of his pram. He couldn't even walk! And even when he could,he was still wee so for days out she needed the pram for long days out. People judge too easily based on what they see very quickly.
Why in the world would you have a kid this old in a stroller drinking out of a bottle?
why dont you google it? :) Anasarca perhaps? Judgemental pricks like you is kinda a part of the problem with kids becoming bullies. Instead of asking and talking they point and laught :) Awesome there!
Load More Replies...Just doing their job. Customers who say they’ve already been checked elsewhere blah blah blah are asshats. Just get checked and leave, you’re holding up the damn line.
I think you need to see both sides. In the very moment, you cannot do much and should move on. The people checking you cannot change the rules anyway. However, different standards by the same agency actually undermine security and should, therefore, be questioned.
Load More Replies...I was going to correct that because I read it wrong like "people threw things at another airport" and thought it was okay.
Load More Replies...I get that, but as a traveller, I do find it super frustrating when an agent takes a fork off me that was clear to travel with me on 10 airport before. Don't they have guidelines?
There is nothing wrong with questioning the process where you have to go through two separate checks. That is a waste of personnel and an assault on a person's sense of common sense.
And the second airport may have heightened security concerns. Would you rather end up blowing up, taking an unscheduled trip to another country at the point of a gun, or end your flight ramming into a building?
Load More Replies...So, why do you do it differently in different places? If you want me e.g. to remove my shoes, then you have to tell me to do so. How should I as a passenger, most likely being here the first time, know your particular customs in such a nice event as airport security? And if you seriously want me to do something so silly as removing my shoes, well then, some people will get butt hurt. Deal with it - that's what you get paid for.
Maybe the fact that they have to repeat the instructions with each passenger might clarify the frustration--and then the idiots still want to argue! I last flew several years ago, but even walking with a cane I was willing to take off my sandals. These poor people don't make the regs you're whining about. Take it up with a superior, while you miss your flight!
Load More Replies...this confirms my observation that they each make up their own rules, instead of following established procedures that apply to every airport; also, if the TSA agent doesn't know the difference between "through" and "threw," he or she is an idiot
The issue with this is that some items are not clearly defined in EU for example, when it comes to what are "dangerous" items? There is a list of some of the prohibited items, and then there are very vague descriptions. And every airport seems to handle some of those items differently. Take travel tripods for photographers or even small umbrellas as an example. Seen both being accepted and both also being rejected and different - sometimes even the same airports when handled by different staff.
To clarify this: When I tried to research if I could take my camera tripod with me on a trip I couldn't find any clear information. The EU regulations stated something like: "No pointy or sharp items. No items that can be used to injure other passengers." Like really? You could use anything to really hurt someone if you wanted. =|
Load More Replies...Yea, you don't get to dictate what the TSA searches. The note was pretty delusional.
Well, so basically you let a personal issue come in the way of doing your job... unorofessional, maybe?
Yeah. Search the bag all you want, but throwing in a stack of inspection notices is just a stupid thing to do.
Load More Replies...That's really petty. Good to know you can't trust them even a little bit
By checking your bag in at the airport, you automatically consent to whatever searching the TSA decides to do. Notes are utterly meaningless. They will search your bag if it the scanners flag it for search. I used to carry film with me in lead safes, they were inspected 100% of the time, even though they had the required stickers reporting them as film.
Load More Replies...Never be a jerk to the people who can keep you from making your flight. #commonsense.
I agree, but doesn't a person who has, IDK, valuable items in their bag (maybe not monetary but stuff they depend on like INSULIN in a higher quantity than allowed through the check in) at least deserve to be notified that their bag was check, so they can inventory it BEFORE they leave the airport at their arrival? (Not after they get to the hotel only to discover the insulin was not put back!)
TSA agents have caught nothing more then being thieves /drug users waste of time had two law suits won against them for theft for this reason
What is wrong with this post? The poster should get extra extra credit for not pluralizing "TSI" with an apostrophe.
That's incredibly wrong. As an SLC resident I'd like to get this investigated.
Well it's not like these underpaid TSA employees are frequent flyers.
Load More Replies...Going to Madrid, my city airport didn't take my deodorant, going back from madrid, they conficated it, why?
I made it through the SLC airport, the Atlanta airport, and the Denver airport before the Phoenix airport TSA found the pepper spray I had forgotten was in one of the zipper compartments in my backpack. Just sayin
Makes sense- some states have different rules. Recently, in Salt Lake we were able to wear our shoes through the screening point but in Texas we had to take them off. Just drink yer damn water before you hit the check point ok? DEAL.
Scariest part for me going through the line is whether they'll let me keep my knitting needles or not!
I've literally gone through this before and got frustrated and said "look at the words on this bottle. NANTON spring water. where's nanton? Alberta. so how did i get here with this big bottle of water from Alberta Canada? THE OTHER AIRPORT LET ME FLY WITH IT STUPID!!!"
Seems like any general complaint from someone who works with the public.
Doesn't matter which industry you work in, there are always customers who act entitled, and try to blame the staff, when it's usually their fault when a f**k up occurs.
I asked this question daily for 35 years--about clients and coworkers equally. Try working in a service-related field some day. You'll understand.
If you're going to b***h about how stupid people are, at least learn how to spell phenomenon. LOL
This would apply to me in the form of "You talking about teachers or students".
There is nothing worse than the undereducated in uniform (with a guπ) acting all officious and bolshy because they are trained to the @uthoritarian rulebook - the same rulebook that suppresses their own existence without realising, why they probably even voted to be beaten with that stick! Those @uthoritarian, officious officers who feel they made something of their lives, earning respect (😆😂🤗😎), love those "other airports do" questions because they make them feel superior, trotting out well-rehearsed responses, often with sarcasm (which they have always seen as wit). What they don't like doing is their job: providing customer service. If TSAs hear it all the time there must be something in it. Not all passengers are lying. And as it must be at least partially true, it is a legitimate point for a passenger to raise, (who isn't briefed on current/pending security alerts) or question - as your job does contain "service" in the title! You forget whom you are serving, and who pays your salary! Not Trump. Seems to me you're the dumb ones. And no, I don't plan on travelling to that r@cist d**g-fuelled, crime-ridden hell-hole the U.S. anytime under that fas***t regime.
Sorry, what exactly is wrong with this? The person is cold. There is a heat-source. Person is only proving that they're not a numpty by applying heat from source to cold extremities.
I guess in civilized places, there are standards for break rooms? Including them being warm enough?
Load More Replies...Okaaay, I'm anemic, I'm cold all the time, I work at an airport, and we have the same toaster in our break room. This post could be about me.
This just makes me feel bad for them- give them a properly heated break room damn!
Growing up white, in my white middle class neighborhood, my father and I rented our house in MAINE. Every winter we were notoriously without heat which was included in the price. Our landlord would say, ""You're lucky we let you live here. Turn on your oven." While it's 20 degrees out. When I was 21 and long moved out, it took my father dying of lung cancer for them to finally fix it. I moved home to be with him for his last 3 years. It was plenty warm.
I do that with my hands under the heat lamps in my fume hood when I’m working because it’s often cold in the lab, and my hands get cold very fast.
This is profiling, not racist. If a large percentage of travelers from China (usually Chinese) bring prohibited items with them, then a whole group not having anything is an outlier and worthy of a little nod. Nothing wrong with that.
Wow, apparently BP loves you and your comment. Edit: I'm talking about the replies.
Load More Replies...I think they maybe meant- Chinese people often carry prohibited items in baggage (fruits etc etc) so if nothing showed up- they let them go. We have Australian border documentaries and s**t Chinese bring with them is insane.
I was one a trip once (with my chinese grandmother) and this TSA was being a racist dumbfuck. " Are you SURE you don[t have anything on you? Lots of Chinese people bring (meat, yadda, yadda.) He then proceeded to take 20 minutes check all of our bags and our tickets to make sure we didn't have anything on us. And I'm American. He only stopped when some older ladies called him out for it.
I don't like this tbh. Once my mom brought a bag of hot pot mix and it had nothing not allowed in it. But the TSA insisted it wasn't allowed because one of the ingredients had the word "鸡” on it which means chicken. And the ingredient its self had nothing to do with it. Needless to say, my mom was really sad because the hot pot mixes in the US tastes pretty blah and she was looking forward to having Hot pot for Chinese New Year dinner.😔
People need to have a sense of humor. That's one of the best traits the Good Lord gave us. I think these workers need more appreciation. They are the ones who keep us safe in the air and it has to get boring some days while doing the same thing over and over and getting the same stupid people coming through with all kinds of excuses.
That's actually horrible??? Just because you have a crappy unfulfilling life, Susan, doesn't mean you should feel joy when others lose theirs. Learn to be happy. This is some real grinchness here.
I read this as sardonic humour. When you have to make light of the dark kernel of reality to survive it.
Load More Replies...Did JI Rowling model the dementors on this person? As I recall they sucked the joy out of everyone.
It must be terrible- dealing with thousands of anxious, angry, frustrated humans each and every day- not getting paid well because this department isn't funded well- ugh no thanks.
Wilvander, you realise that it was the TSA that someone else was shouting at right? Not the other way around?
As someone who works with the public, it's very possible the only thing the agent did was their job
Load More Replies...Basically, they are spotlighting those lonely and/or pervy men that seem a little too eager for a pat-down
Load More Replies...PAX means passenger. It's travel industry lingo. Just like CX customer is other industries.
"how lonely passengers be acting when you advise them on the Gate Admission pat down". (ie lonely horny people get all happy about being pat down at the security gates).... eeeeew!!!
"how lonely passengers act, when you advise them on the General Admissions pat-down". ie "how horny, desperate passengers behave, when we have to pat them down when they come through security". Just... eeeeewwwwww!!!!!
Every public service has this problem. Management doesn't care, whatever you boss is would rather have an extra secretary for his/her consequence, and the public just whines that we cost too much while demanding special service, or to waive the rules just for them--or they're afraid their taxes would go up. Feh.
I would expect security measures within one country - or at least one state - to be the same! This is not about preferences such as shoes on or off, this is about safety!
On paper they are, but the TSA gives each airport latitude in how they enforce the rules, remember the TSA is in over 400 airports that meet a min federal size (some small local regionals dont have enough traffic for the TSA to be used and few airports got permission to use private like San Fran). So since it is hard to manage over 40,000 employees in over 400 airports with a uniform standard, they give a lot of leeway to each facility. People do not realize how big the agency is or how big the US is
Load More Replies...They are all run by the same organization and rules they should all be the same if the security mattered instead of just being theater.
If they did that, it would take two weeks to get through security. Airport A's problems may not be the same as Airport B's.
Load More Replies...I don't see anything wrong with this. Everyone complains about work/customers, why should TSA be any different? Why aren't they allowed to vent?
It's distressing to learn that TSA procedures are not standardized across the country. Imagine if the USPS was run this way. Or any government agency. Not good.
I hate to tell you this, but they are. It's impossible to legislate everything, so each place legislates for its own particular problems. Take UPS, for example. A facility that does everything by hand (because they're so small) will accept items that a mechanized facility won't.
Load More Replies...TSA procedures are established at the top and are to be applied identically across all US airports. It's like TGIFridays or Denny's -- they can't make up their own menus or ways of making dishes. They have procedure manuals. Passengers are smart enough to realize the TSA agents they're dealing with are making up things on their own and not following established procedures.
When I'm told at the layover that my bag isn't allowed, it's a problem. I'm supposed to go shopping at the airport, half way through my trip, buy a smaller bag than the one allowed at the first airport and throw out that which does not fit? YES! TSA regulations should be standard in ALL airports in this country.
That's just dumb. If procedures are different at every airport it's no wonder that passengers get agitated and irritated. It's not the passengers that are DAMF but the TSA, from management all the way down to the agents.
I fly a lot for work. Different airports all over the U.S. The procedures/rules are not different. The only difference is the attention to details and GAF of the enforcement.
At a lecture a comment came up stating that at any McDonald’s everything is the same across the country. One sandwich is made exactly the same at each. The company I worked for had a book of the rules and it was the standard at every work location save one. In Sacramento they thought they would ‘improve’ the rules without running it by corporate first. I had worked there for two weeks and everyday I had to listen to what I didn’t do yesterday. I asked where in the standards is any of this info, if it isn’t printed it’s not a rule. Standards in the workforce would end ‘they don’t do this at...’
And why is this post here? OK I need my life back, can't believe I'm this far down and still nothing to enjoy/get upset so far.
I think they’re also trying to point out the shortcomings of the institution itself in this thread, possibly in response to the TSA spokesperson’s comments re. the reason for employees’ loss of moral and insatisfaction.

So they're using the internal security that's always on--supposedly for your protection--to harass their employees. I don't know what to think about these... some of them are funny but honestly these people seem like the worse kind of people to work with or befriends with. This is why everyone hates airport security, they treat us like criminals and like we're idiots and apparently that's exactly how they feel?!

I didn't expect the comments here to be so negative. Isn't everyone who works with customers annoyed by some of them and has to vent sometimes. And they see a LOT of customers every day, and probably hear the same things over and over again. So yes, it's their job, but I think it's also okay to cope with this through talking to others in the same job. And for all flights I had, I never had a bad experience, they are just people too.
Totally agree. Most of the people who works in retail, customer service or similar position dealing with tons of customers, are saying how exhausting it is. Most of us complain about our jobs one way or another, it is highly hypocritical to expect TSA agents to be saints.
