Everyone loves a good, well-paced detective story that’s full of mystery, twists, and turns. Lately, however, more and more people opt for watching true crime shows and listening to podcasts, instead of picking up a classic slow-paced book about sleuths. True crime has actually become one of Netflix’s most popular genres and people are utterly obsessed with shows that detail the ins and outs of crimes committed by serial killers. Crimes, the gruesome details of which chill the viewers’ blood.
As such, internet users have been busy making meme after meme about people’s obsession with true crime media. One such place is the ‘True Crime Memes’ Instagram account, a page with over 22.4k amateur detective followers.
True crime is far from funny in and of itself. However, people’s reactions to the genre’s popularity and obsession with shows like HBO’s True Detective, Netflix’s Making a Murderer, and (yes, even) Tiger King certainly are witty.
While some folks explain that they watch shows like that to relax, others are entranced by just how much they’re glued to the screen and can’t stop bingeing episodes. Have a scroll down and take a look at the best true crime memes (don’t worry, they’re behind bars) and upvote the ones that you relate to the most. Are you a huge fan of the genre? Let us know what you love most about it in the comment section.
I was interested to learn more about our fascination with the true crime genre, so I reached out to Lyndsey Williams, the founder of the True Crime Memes Instagram project. I also got in touch with British environmental psychologist and well-being consultant Lee Chambers who told me all about why we're so drawn to true crime and explained the potential negative effects of binge-watching TV shows. You'll find Bored Panda's full in-depth interviews with Lyndsey and Lee below, dear Pandas! Now, let's dive deep into the world of true crime.

My house has no backyard, cellar, or crawlspace, and I don't have a car. A career as a serial killer isn't on the cards for me
Excuse me but some of us are obliged to work from home at the moment!
Lol. Also that series “Buried in the Backyard” has had to expand its definition of ‘backyard’ to include nearby cornfields, woods, swamps, sides of roads etc.
Now that would be illegal and criminal. We can't have that happening
Load More Replies...I have a shotgun, a shovel, an alibi, a good lawyer and two acres uncultivated beyond home: they'll never find the body....
Henry Hill, Jimmy, and Tommy was able to stuff Billy Batts’ body in the trunk, because it was the 1970’s and cars had huge trunks. You can’t do that with today’s cars today
Lyndsey told Bored Panda all about how she founded the True Crime Memes page, why it's extremely popular among women, and why people find the genre so captivating. "One day, I was out with a friend getting pizza and I kept seeing funny memes about true crime. I honestly don’t even know what sparked the idea but I told her, 'I’m gonna make a true crime memes instagram page' and she encouraged the idea and we just rolled with it! I originally was just going to re-post memes I found online but I ended up getting more involved with the page and it has now become almost all original content," she said.
The True Crime Memes page saw a big jump in popularity after a famous true crime podcast posted one of Lyndsey's original memes and tagged her in the caption. However, not everyone is as friendly. " A very famous true crime youtuber shared one of my original memes on her story and I was extremely excited but she never credited me, so that was pretty disappointing!"
According to Lyndsey, true crime is far more popular among women. "My audience is 96% women which I find extremely interesting! I can't speak for everyone, but in my opinion, the reason I and so many other women are so drawn to the genre is that we can almost get into the mind of the perpetrator. How can I avoid people like the perp, and how did the victim get caught in a situation where such a heinous crime was committed and what can I do so that this never happens to me? It has honestly made me much more cautious and aware of my surroundings," she shared with Bored Panda.

Second rule of true crime: kill all the people you want, but do NOT touch that dog.
I watched one documentary on YouTube about this monster who killed his whole family... AND he killed the family dog. And I'm sitting there like YOU EVEN KILLED THE POOR DOG? HOW COULD YOU??
I will never understand why people gots to kill the dogs?!!!

Hm. This dog witnessed the murder. I have no choice but to take this floofy boy home with me.
Absolutely! I skip episodes that mention pets. I'm not going to risk it.
Maybe because the former is meant to create fear through horror whereas the latter is trying to create understanding from horror?
I'm sure it's the sound effects. Horror movies use ... something (melody/ frequency/ whatever) that forces your body or mind to be scared, while a documentary obviously does not use this technique.
Also in documentaries most of the times you know the story! You know what have happened and the element of surprise is absent! So you are not really nervous about what will happen next

Meanwhile, psychologist Lee from the UK was kind enough to give me a deeper glance into the reasons why some people are so entranced by true crime and analyzing the darker side of humanity.
"When considering why the darker side of humanity and entertainment are so compelling, we have to first look at our evolutionary journey as human beings. For the majority of our existence, we were prey and always hyperaware of threats to our safety, which created a negativity bias that we are drawn towards," Lee explained to Bored Panda.
"But in today's safe and often sanitized world, we are rarely threatened significantly, and the ability to explore evil, frightening and gruesome entertainment is one of the few ways we can visit this part of humanity while remaining safe and comfortable. There is a level of novelty to it, it removes boredom quickly, and it helps us to discover our emotional limits while understanding the minds of those who go beyond social norms and potentially gaining knowledge of how we might avoid being victims ourselves. They also offer closure, with many stories ending with the mystery being solved, and the criminal being brought to a level of justice," the psychologist said.
Watched a crime show the other day, husband was murdered in his home. The cops were tipped off to the wife's guilt because even though the couple had just come home with their fast food supper, the wife decided she needed to go back out to the grocery store to pick up a single item she forgot (receipt alibi, of course). The cops (and I) reasoned that a normal person would eat first because the fries would be cold if she waited until she got back. We were right. Her married, church pastor boyfriend killed her husband.
A receipt is the least of it. Your cell phone will put you there. Security cameras will put you there.
I have an entire drawer of receipts that are color coded by month and year lol
I had a friend (who was married) who said he was in love with me, but I explained several times that I didn’t feel that way. He seemed to choose to ignore that, and talked about coming to see me on the DL, but he was afraid that if I was murdered afterward, he’d be the primary suspect, and his wife would be livid. Bruh???
Do no worry for you alibi... Google is your main alibi. Just ask them where you were during the murder, he knows everything about you ;)
I realized not too long ago, that if someone in my family died in a suspicious manner, I'd be the first suspect if the police apply all their idiotic assumptions and pseudoscience. "Her browser history had serial killer biographies, unresolved murders and other disturbing stuff..." 🤣
I hope you don't play video games, D&D, and listen to metal?

Load More Replies...As someone who watches these things, I’d believe it would be the opposite. I think I despised murdered even more when I first started watching true crime.
I would be the first suspect... maybe because I wrote an 11 page essay about Ted Bundy at the age of 10
I don't know about this. Maybe, I'm not a shrink. A friend from long ago was fascinated with true crime. Read the novels, watched the shows, knew serial killers' profiles better than US presidents. However, this kid was in no way ever going to become a serial killer. Designer, model, clerk in an upscale store, some rich person's assistant, but not a murderer.
I don’t tell a lot of people about this fascination of mine, so when I accidentally found out my hairdresser feels the same way…. Wow I was in heaven. Someone to talk murder with. Lolololol
According to Lee, there's even a "comforting element" that all the evil things portrayed on the screen are happening to someone else, instead of to us. "It can take us on an emotional rollercoaster, have us trying to solve the puzzle and test our fear in a controlled way. The permission to explore evil is powerful, as we so rarely get the chance elsewhere, and in itself, it is healthy and normal in moderation," he said.
However, there are downsides to exposing ourselves to too much violence in the media. We have to learn how to moderate our consumption of such shows. "The challenge we face is the fact that consuming too much of this can desensitize us, and cause us to become less empathetic to the suffering of others, more fearful of our own environment, and potentially be more likely to use aggression ourselves. It can also cause us to be triggered by our own previous adverse experiences, make it harder to manage our own emotional balance, and increase our stress levels, so moderating our consumption is something we should have front of mind, even when we get embroiled in the latest series that is pulling us in."
I was also interested to find out at what point we should be getting worried about the time we spend watching TV shows of any genre. "Modern TV has a range of psychological hooks built in to keep us watching, from episode endings that leave you wanting more, to autoplay of the next episode unless canceled. I often talk to my clients about 3 hours of TV a day ending up at around 11 years of our lifespan sat staring at a screen," psychologist Lee told Bored Panda this shocking piece of information.
The ability to make a room light up when you walk in apparently makes you more likely to be the victim of an unsolved murder, especially if you wear big glasses
If you find that in addition to rooms lighting up when you enter, you also have a large green/red diamond above you that follows you incessantly: you might just be a Sim. I'll just go now
Load More Replies...So not the victim but are you the one your neighbors least expect to be a serial killer?
Glad it’s not just me. Either that or googling lists of rampage killings etc
I got lost in a deep dive in to the US’s FBI’s most wanted listed, which turned in to individual dives on each crime I felt didn’t have enough detail in the blurb, which I think also went in to how many US presidents have had assassination attempts, and so on. All told, I think I was at it for 4 hours. I don’t remember what started it.
Load More Replies...I think that studies show watching Scary movies is comforting because it makes our own problems seem so small compared to running from a serial murderer or monster.
My bf likes watching Ghosthunters to fall asleep. Just lovely....nothing ever really happens but the sounds creep me out
my wife used to go to sleep listening to this cd of "true confessions" or something like that. i had to tell her that i couldn't fall asleep listening to the confessions of a guy who killed his baby sister when he was a kid, an Israeli guy who murdered a Palestinian family, one who made their aged mother pay him for help to eat or drink... not restful to me.
"Watching the latest shows isn't a bad thing, entertainment can be a great way to relax, often starts great conversations and helps us to explore ourselves in the context of others. It is worth remembering that some TV as an addition to a modern well-lived life is a net positive, but as soon as it starts to invade your sleep, impact what you eat, and how much you move your body, it starts subtracting from the fundamentals that keep us in an optimal place as human beings," Lee pointed out at what point we should become concerned about the time we spend sitting in front of the screen.
Chief among the negative effects of being unable to control the time we spend in front of the screen is the lack of sleep which affects nearly every facet of our lives. "A lack of sleep compounds in a variety of negative ways, and we are well aware of the challenges we face as a society around eating and movement. We also need to consider the mental and psychological benefits of watching some TV and taking ownership; being in control of what you watch is a great place to be, so ensure you are the master of the TV and don't let the TV become the master of you," he said.

Once I’ve started an episode I have to finish out of respect, unless I’ve seen it before. If my murder was “boring” I’d be devastated (in ghost form)
"I'm sorry the way I was murdered, dismembered, burnt in my own fireplace and thrown into the nearby lake is not interesting enough for you ! I will do better next time... Oh, no, wait, I can't : I'm dead."
my ghost would contact my family to sue the writers and producers for making such a lame episode
Oh my god I LOVE that show but they took it off Netflix 😭
And how would she know unless someone told her, huh? TV screens don't work both ways.
"If you notice yourself starting to delay your sleep, take shortcuts socializing, eating, or keeping fit to keep your TV company, or feel like it's in control of you, it's time to take a step back and build a routine that you can control while still enjoying your favorite shows in moderation. It can even be a lot of fun to take it more slowly and build up excitement and anticipation for the next episode!"

you would need more than one pair of gloves, wear at least 2 pairs. with the thin latex or nitril gloves a fingerprint still might be left behind and in addition to that, wash your gloved hands, you might have DNA on the gloves because when you put them on microscopic small skin cells rub off and might be on the gloves.

The genre’s popularity, while thrilling for the creators of the shows and podcasts themselves, is a potential source of concern. The Washington Post writes that the increase of rampant violence in media is making some experts very worried.
“I’m concerned about the trajectory we’re on. If I worked at Netflix I might say, ‘Well, this is what people want.' But that doesn’t mean it should be provided. The research shows that escalating violence on-screen can make us more tolerant of it in real life; it can leave ‘lingering fear’ that can cause sleep disturbances and other problems,” Professor Glenn Sparks from Purdue University told WaPo. “There is an issue of social responsibility here.”
I was cycling beside the highway once when I found a human sized garbage bag which was giving off a faint smell and, when prodded, was cold and had a soft, fleshy feel. Tempting fate, I opened it. It turned out to be a bag of individually wrapped fresh meat that had probably fallen off the back of a truck. Steaks, chicken legs, that sort of thing.
When you're out in the middle of nowhere, do think this would be a great place to dispose of a body?
Well our cat dragged home something black and rotten when i was a kid, i freaked and was convinced it was a body part and ran for my parents because our cat was eating the evidence! It turns out it was a rotten fish, and even though my parents took it straight off him, the poor kitty was rather sick that day (yes he went to the vet 😀)
Once I was walking towards a bunched up duvet in a corner outside and my brain went "omg there might be a body rolled up in there!" Then I realised it's my duvet. In my yard. And I literally just saw the wind blow it off the washing line and into the corner.

I was like what the FFFFFf??!!!? I still wonder about that bone.

Load More Replies..."I could have been a great detective if I'd had the right opportunities when I was young"
This obsession with the true crime genre could, at least in part, be explained by the change in how we tend to view shows now. There has been a shift from watching TV shows with your family and friends to viewing shows more privately now.
“If you look at television history, there’s often a mirror effect,” Thompson said. “In the early days of TV, in the days of ‘I Love Lucy’ and ‘Leave it To Beaver,’ families would gather in the living rooms to watch shows about people who gather in their living rooms. And now we’re people who sit huddled alone, looking a little creepy, watching people who are huddled alone looking a little creepy,” Professor Robert Thompson from Syracuse University told The Washington Post.

When I’m in a group, I’m an observer. I watch our surroundings and the people in public and alert my people if anything is sketchy or off. But when I’m alone, I’m too afraid to go slow and watch, I just dart to and fro, do what I need to do, and get back to safety as soon as possible. I usually have a backup plan and another backup plan and different scenarios in my mind for if something were to go wrong, but my main goal is to do what I need to do without giving people a chance to notice me

Ted Bundy's mom once went on record saying she "resented" her son being blamed every time a dead girl's body was found. This was after his confessions and execution, so she knew well what he was. I'm not one of these people who are quick to blame parents, especially when their child is exceptionally evil, but I couldn't help but wonder if her 'not my son' attitude enabled Ted in some ways.
She has a point, though. Bundy murdered a lot, but most murders weren't committed by him so people shouldn't automatically assume it was him every time there is a murder.

It is sad that husbands are immediately assumed to be the murderer whenever a woman dies. People don't assume the wife is automatically the murderer if a husband dies.
Watch the husband's body language. Over the past couple of years, when wives go missing, the husbands say, "Darling, please come home" while shaking their heads. This indicates that he knows that won't happen because she's dead. In the 3 cases I'm thinking of, the husbands turn out to be the murderers.
I highly recommend the book "What Every Body Is Saying," by Joe Navarro. Fascinating stuff, really makes you pay more attention to others' body language.

Stealing. Seriously, this is a sign. It may seem harmless but I've seen countless crime shows in which a spouse was caught stealing, be it petty theft or major embezzlement, and would then go on to commit murder. Now, some people will say, "Yeah, but just because someone steals, doesn't mean they're capable of murder.". But it DOES mean they're dishonest, which means they're more capable of murder than the average person. Stealing is weird, unless you're desperate. If your partner steals, get out!

Here in the U.S., there was a love triangle murder plot that I remember well because it had an unusual detail. A man conspires with his mistress to kill his wife. Here's where it gets batshit crazy. The mistress is married herself and she gets her husband to help with the killing. Yes, a man, his mistress and his mistress' husband all conspired to kill his wife. So I'm thinking the mistress must've been a sex bomb for the ages. Nope, they were all 3 the homeliest bunch of people I've ever seen.
They totally missed, "Local police were about to make a gruesome discovery"
On CBS' "Sixty Minutes," they focus the camera tightly on the person so their head more than fills the frame. Research has shown that this makes viewers perceive the subject as untrustworthy.
made a gruesome discovery, she lit up the room when walked in, he/she had no enemies, etc overused
It was a red flag, laying in a pool of blood, would have given you the shirt off his back.
Don't be the overly helpful witness, hinting and "discovering evidence" and trying to manipulate detectives.
We only see that mistake made in the solved cases. We don't actually know if it doesn't fool the police most of the time.

Never discover the body. You'll be all night downtown and miss your shows.
Ah, I think you're on to something. I'll bet with a bit more research that you'll get an answer.
Oh come on, lots of people get cast for their looks. But bad acting in Star Wars stands out
The perfect murder is common. It happens to old people all the time. Nobody asks questions when a frail person just ends up dead in bed. If you look at the death counts murdering nurses or doctors have until they get caught, you can imagine how many people get away with just one such murder.

What a waste of my precious time when I could've been watching Golden Girl reruns.
So your neighboor stalk you in your backyard ? They are the deranged murderers, imo.
You know where you are with someone serving life without the possibility of parole
Me everytime I listen to Gillian Pensavalle and Patrick Hinds of True Crime Obsessed.
I have mastered the art of not making a facial expression when my podcast surprises me.
What could he say that would make you think he was innocent? I do find it sad that if a woman is murdered, people always tend to assume the husband is guilty just because he's married to her. People don't assume the wife is guilty if her husband dies.
New true crime series on Netflix: gets fluffy blanket, mug of cocoa and cat
Definitely, and the parents covered it up cos they couldn’t stand to lose both kids
Load More Replies...I'll go with Joe Kenda on that case. They botched the crime scene so bad that we'll never be able to know with any certainty.
Same as discovery channel docs like Escobar's millions or Cooper's treasure?
My mum and I were discussing this very thing last night after we watched a crime/cult documentary about the Children Of God/The Family International cult called "Children Of The Cult". We watched every episode and got to the second to last one and KNEW there would be absolutely no satisfactory outcome to the story and that the whole thing could have been wrapped up in one 90 minute documentary.
I just watched The Eleven and can’t believe that there was no resolution at the end.
Bonus points if the narrator uses the phrase "they were living the American dream"
Further bonus points for: 'its just such a quiet neighborhood, you don't expect this to happen here' 'she entered the room and everyone turned to see, she lit up the whole room'

Another plot twist: it's your owner, because only a deeply disturbed person would put a wig on a Chihuahua

That kind of stereotypes don't help. It's gotten to the point where if a woman dies, the husband is always assumed by people to be the murderer. People don't automatically assume that the wife is the murderer if the husband dies.
Lol, I always shout out I'm sorry you had to die for my entertainment
You know, I think about this too. It seriously can raise an issue with me. I feel a little bad but I continue everyday to watch, read and listen. I keep telling myself it’s already happened and I’m not causing it to happen just cuz I’m enjoying the story. So ……🤷🏼♀️
It is not necessity about the person dying, it is about seeing justice being done.
Agreed! I'd LOVE to start telling people about that one murder that was committed with an icicle to cover the murderer's tracks!

Because there's nothing unhealthy about looking for potential body dump sites on Google Earth and trying to visualize what they looked like thirty years ago
Is this true? It’s never occurred to me to try to cure my depression by not watching true crime programs. What should I watch then? Pepper Pig?
Depends on the person in question. If you're someone easily influenced by the world around you then yes, true crime won't be great for depression, but if you're a stubborn bastard like me it'll bring you nothing but enjoyment.

No no, it's helps with my depression and negative thoughts because it reminds me that no matter how much my life sucks, it could have been worse. I could have been lighting up rooms and getting murdered.
If there's one conclusion I've drawn from all the true crime videos I've watched, it's that if you're going to do away with someone you know, get some acting lessons ASAP. So many of these people put all this effort into making sure they have an alibi, only to end up making the police suspicious as hell when they can't even pretend to be upset about their dead loved one/s. Like, dude, your wife and kids were cut to pieces with an axe! Shouldn't you be shedding a few tears? Trembling with shock? Anything other than nonchalantly smoking a cigarette and claiming you were at the library the whole time?
And don't run right off to Vegas with the life insurance and your 'new' girlfriend .

All I'll say is I've watched enough of these to know to shut my mouth until a lawyer is present.
I don't like when there are two narrators in a true-crime podcast, and one just tells the story while another gives exaggerated reactions. "...and he killed her" and another narrator is like "WHAAAT". You are hosting a podcast about murders, what did you expect?
I have to admit that when I use my nailbrush I often think about how now if someone kills me at least I'll get lots of their DNA under my nails 🤔 I try not to think that every day of course, but I can't really help it 😆
Unless they spike your drink and do you like David Parker Ray.

These shows teach you how not to get caught. People still do the same dumbass stuff though. Gee, I think I'll look up stuff that pertains to the crime I'm about to commit on my computer or I think I'll take my phone with me. Forensic files is a great one to learn on. It's amazing what they can do now and they let you know. So pay attention. lol
