A truck driver Matthew B. from Texas has an extraordinary travel companion named Ashes. The man shares an inseparable bond with his best buddy, a three-year-old cat, and spends his days traveling cross-country with him. Sadly, a couple of months ago during one such trip, Ashes accidentally slipped out of Matthew’s 18-wheeler as they were passing through Springfield, Ohio. The cat got scared by unfamiliar surroundings and ran off into the bushes. The devastated owner frantically searched for his pal but eventually gave up and got back on the road.

Over the course of two months, the truck driver tried his best at rearranging routes so he could go back to the same spot in Ohio where Ashes was last seen. However, the cat was nowhere to be found.

When Matthew probably thought that he’d never get to see Ashes again, a kind passerby spotted him. The woman named Kimberly T. noticed Ashes during 13-degree weather seeking a stranger’s attention. “He was trying to not put his feet down on the ground, it was so cold,” she said. The woman took Ashes to her car and drove him to the animal rescue organization called Lollypop Farm.

Luckily, Ashes had a microchip which helped to track down Mathew. The employees were quite stunned when they found out that Ashes was 1,465 miles away from home.

“Our Admissions Team immediately scanned for a microchip, as they do with all incoming pets. Not only did he have one, but he had an owner who had registered him under a Texas address that was over 1,465 miles away! This was one cross-country kitty,” said the organization.

The missing cat was surrendered to an animal rescue organization called Lollypop Farm and was returned to Matthew after they scanned cat’s micro-chip

Matthew was relieved to find out that his beloved feline was safe and sound. During the reunion, he burst into tears as he hugged Ashes and called it his “Christmas miracle”.

This is one of those moments when you realise money does not buy happiness; something far more important does.

Microchip your pets people! Even if you don’t think he or she will escape, it’s the most reliable way to reunite lost pets with their owners, and it’s a fairly easy process. Obviously don’t if you don’t have the financial means (which unfortunately seems to be the problem I need most cases), but try to as soon as possible! Sometimes shelters will do it for cheap as well, I know there’s one near me who microchips for $5.

My vet will do it for any donation. I paid for mine to be done and enough for 5 others to be done when the human companions did not have enough. SO important.

Stories like this are so wonderful to read with all the craziness in our world right now. You can tell that the cat is just as overjoyed as the human to be reunited.

Matthew and Ashes: best buddies forever! Thank you to Kimberly for rescuing the kitty and bringing him to Lollypop Farms to be scanned for a microchip. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

PSA: BE SURE TO REGISTER YOUR MICRO-CHIPPED ANIMALS. THE AGENCIES AND VETS DO NOT COMPLETE THAT MOST IMPORTANT STEP. THERE ARE PLACES TO REGISTER ONLINE THAT ARE FREE. MANY LOST ANIMALS ARE FOUND WITH UNREGISTERED CHIPS, WHICH MAKES IT ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND THEIR OWNERS.

Family is more important like this. You never know when they will leave you, so cherish them. Even if they act like they hate you, they still love you. Never forget that.
