Hashtags and viral challenges usually represent funny or iconic moments in pop culture, but there is a new viral movement that has taken off whose goal isn't to entertain - but to help save the planet.
1.3 billion tonnes of household waste is generated per year and only 258 -368 million tons of it ends up in the 50 largest dumpsites, and million tons of it ends up in the ocean, 80% of which comes from mainland waste. Well, the new hashtag #trashtag wants everyone to chip in to chip away at this trash problem. People are challenged to take a before photo of an area that is in need of intense trash clean-up, followed by an after photo of the beautified area.
The hashtag blew up on social media after a reddit user posted a screenshot of someone who had completed the challenge, with the caption: "Here is a new #challenge for all you bored teens. Take a photo of an area that needs some cleaning or maintenance then take a photo after you have done something about it, and post it here.” Scroll down below to see some of the best photos from this environmentally-friendly hashtag and don't forget to upvote your favs!

#trashtag from Vietnam, youngsters gather voluntarily to clean up the environment and to raise public awareness
You are all fabulous, thank you so much for caring enough to make such a huge difference, your hard work is awesome! Many congratulations.,
Even when waste is put into dump sites it finds other ways of getting out into the world. As trash decomposes it can release toxins and harmful chemicals that leak into the soil, which then spreads into the water and air. While this can seem life a slow process that might not directly affect you, improper waste management can have deadly consequences in real time. In 1998 and 1999 thousands of people were killed in Bangladesh by flood waters caused by piled up waste in the sewers.
#trashtag seems to be trending. This one's from Nepal

Thanks for covering about that. We appreciate everyone who did the challenge although he isn't from Nepal. He is from Myanmar. Please kindly correct it. For the verification - https://www.facebook.com/120478505286841/posts/288732525128104?sfns=mo Screen-Sho...e1-png.jpg
Awesome! But I think he missed a spot... (My OCD is having a hard time...)
Yeah, needs more trashbags (and more people helping)

#trashtag Manila Bay has been considered one of the dirtiest bays across the world. After 11 years, the Supreme Court finally issued a cleanup order which thousands of volunteers joined last January 27, 2019.
the weather helped a lot… but if i look at the building over is this even the same place?
The second photo is taken much closer to the strip and a few years apart.
Load More Replies...I'm from the Philippines and it's real. The clean up becomes trending that it is on everybody's fb wall here in PH. lol The photos were just shot in different angles.
It's President Duterte's idea right? I keep thinking that it's Mayor Estrada did it.
Load More Replies...The description seem to be misleading. There has been a Supreme Court ruling to clean the bay few years back. It was the current president's initiatives that finally put that into action and to keep it like that.
well the photo might have been taken 11 years ago and a lot can happen in 11 years including a building being built.
The second one is beautiful but it looks like a different place. Still, it's nice to see a lovely clean beach.
I have my doubts about this one. Compare the buildings in the background and it doesn't appear to be the same area of beach. Let's hope I'm wrong.
Worldwide, each individual person generates an average of 0.74 kilograms of waste per day, but ranges widely, from 0.11 to 4.54 kilograms. High-income countries generate about 34 percent, or 683 million tonnes, of the world’s waste, even though they only account for 16 percent of the world’s population.
Around 500 volunteers helped with the cleanup of 5 million kg of trash from this Mumbai beach.
Many countries bring big money in due to tourism. This is good, it helps locals, businesses and helps improve lives of indigenous people. Wake up Governments, and stop looking out for your own selfish selves.
Generally speaking- 1. If people were not such pigs in the first place we would not have this problem. 2. Stop putting so much plastic 'wrap' on items bought in stores.
These aren't the same place. They are very obviously completely different locations.
It is the same place..!The massive cleanup changed the scenario drastically..!!

This should be the new challenge to make the world a better place
What if all these before/after photos are just in the wrong order and these guys are actually emptying bags of trash on the ground for a little self promotion. 🤔 #PlotTwist
Almost looks like the photo from above. Very similar and I wonder if these are stock photos.
Americans love to supersize everything and that includes waste. Even though Americans make up roughly 5% of the world's population, they generate close to 40% of the world's total waste.

Looks great, and great job of protecting your health. Good protection is important in cleaning up trash. Hands, feet and mouth/nose. Inhaling fumes can be dangerous.
female power. I have noticed that the clean up squads I see are usually 95% women...
Thank you so much, what a wonderful job you did, you three are truly awesome wonderful people! Many congratulations on a job very well done!
Very impressive work and I'm glad to see you're wearing masks and gloves.
While every tip of the planet seems to be filled with waste, the only place where you can almost escape the endless litter is Antartica. It is protected by the Antarctic Treaty, a treaty that prohibits military activity, mineral mining, nuclear explosions and nuclear waste disposal.
Took me a few days, but finally finished!!
Problem is much of the road and path side rubbish is coming from the young, late teens/early 20's
Wow, what a difference, thank you so very much for clearing the trash that the thoughtless left behind! Many congratulations to you for your hard work and thoughtfulness, you are truly awesome!
This is just a work of an hour! #trashtag
Even though small, still helping. (Would’ve taken me at least 3 hours)
small? one guy ~ pitching in..on his own..is NOT small {would've taken me the whole day}
Load More Replies...Original poster of this image has been caught stealing images and passing them off as his own before. Camera angles don't match either. I'm betting this is fake, trash is still there, he's standing out of view. I'm willing to be downvoted in order to expose liars and you all fell for it.
Bull.. This is several hours of work, -even if you were to be two people working together. And. -When you have done something like this, you stand a little bit taller, you are proud, you are wiping swet of your forehead, you don't leave your shirt unbuttoned or even on, because first of all; it would be dragging through the trash while working and second; you'd be too warm. He rolled his sleeves up a bit, and I bet the only reason he got warm was from throwing a bit of trash out of the way, so he could take the second pic from another angle, in an area where there were not much trach to begin with. There is even still trash on the ground on the second picture. -And I'll tell you this, -once you've started collecting garbage, you get into it, you become determined and focused. You wouldn't go halfass and give up while there was still a little bit of trash left, before leaving the site. -And you would also post the filled bags of garbage in the second picture, because you'd be surprised how quickly the big plastic bags are filled, and you'd want to show this, to inspire others to join the challenge, because this is the whole point of the challenge/movement. smh
Sorry for the misspelling and grammar mistakes, english is not my first language, I'm from Denmark. :) -And if you couldn't tell, I without a doubt call b******t on this one. smh
Load More Replies...I used to pick up trash in the ditch on the road where we lived. Then the next day more trash would be in it. I stopped when I got too old for all the bending over. Nobody else took over when I got too old. And the trash continues to be flung on the roadside and used as a dump by people too cheap or too lazy to dispose of it properly. I caught one guy dumping garbage on the roadside. When he saw me he stopped and took off. The next day I found a pile of trash in the middle my driveway. His petty revenge for my interference with his illegal dumping, I guess. Stuff like this is why I am not a fan of human beings.
Thank you so much, you did an incredible job in one hour, my hat is off to you! Many congratulations in joining the trash challenge and succeeding, you are an awesome human being!
That's disgusting that they just dump their rubbish like that in the first place. Good job cleaning it up, but I hope the locals behave better in future.
At least picture looks like it was taken the same day after some hard work. Thank you
Landfills are the designated place where trash belongs and with so much waste being thrown in them things get densely packed in. For trash degradation it goes through an anaerobic process (without air), which creates huge amounts of methane gas - a greenhouse gas with an environmental impact 25x greater than carbon dioxide.
The community in my home town in Mexico got together and cleaned up garbage
Definitely cool. I wonder how much of that trash was run off with rain water. Looks like a natural drainage area.
Fantastic job all of you, that is truly amazing and not an easy job on steep slopes! Many thanks for clearing up all that trash that others carelessly tossed away! Many congratulations for a job well done!
This is so disgusting!!!! Who just litters all over the damn place!! F****ING pigs out there I tell you..

You might not think of plastic packaging and food to be equals, but food does fall under the waste category. Roughly one-third of food produced in the world for human consumption every year (approximately 1.3 billion tons) is wasted. Each American throws out around 1,2000 pounds of organic garbage that could be composted.
My aunt is a 70 year old retired school teacher and she has been making these signs and going around cleaning up our neighborhood in the Bronx for a few months now #Trashtag
I’m 72, and every time I walk my dog I bring a bag to collect trash. The garbage goes in our garbage pail and the bottles, plastics, cardboard, etc.goes in the recycling pail. Fortunately,we have pickup for both! Our tax dollars at work! We will be getting a mulching pail starting this summer!
What a lovely lady, thank you so much for caring enough to take on the trash challenge and make a difference in your own neighborhood! Many congratulations for a job well done!
Took the whole Sunday morning for 10 people. But finally completed the #trashtag challenge
So disgusting, I can't believe this is OUR PEOPLE IN ANY CITY OUR NEIGHBORS !!!
Fantastic job all of you, that looks amazing! Thank you all so much for caring enough to clear the trash that others carelessly tossed aside! Many congratulations to you all!
Getting those nets picked up is so important; they're really killing ocean life. Thank you, and keep up the great work.
Note how much of that is fishing net ... it's not just us sending it out to sea...
The trash on the beach looks so colorful. It looks like lots of cords. I wonder what all that junk is.
Are the 2 pictures from different parts of the beach or did it take THAT long to tidy up that they built another house in the background...?
I think it's the angle and the distance the photos were taken from

The photo not taken from same spot. Garbage still behind them. Call me synical.
I bet both images taken same day....about a minute apart. #sneakysneaky

Along the Potomac River south of Washington, DC. We have to clean up the existing mess, but bottle deposit laws and styrofoam bans would prevent most of it. Contact your local, state, and federal representatives and insist on this.
People are greedy and self-centered. Have to have the next best phone, tv, computer, etc, newest styles, throw away what is perfectly good just so they can be “current.”
Wow, a truly awesome job! Thank you so much for clearing all that trash away from beside the Potomac River, and taking on the trash challenge. Many congratulations on your fantastic effort!
This is what I wonder about...once all this trash is bagged up, does it just go to another landfill? I'm not trying to be negative, but it seems to me that a great deal of it is probably recyclable, but I know that there's far too much of it for that and also far too few recycling facilities around the world. We just have to stop using plastic!
Ever think about what happened to that outdated flip phone of yours? It probably ended up in a landfill along with the over 140 million cell phones thrown into landfills by Americans yearly. Every year, over 50 million tons of electronic waste like cell phones, computers, TVs, etc is created.
People are starting to accept the challenge
What a fantastic job you did, my hat is off to you! Many congratulations on clearing up trash, your challenge is complete, you are all awesome!
There's an organisation I volunteer at and we basically do cleanups like this in the city. Places that have been forgotten by the local government and make them accessible for the public
This is great. Not just cleaned up trash, but nature too! Weeds, leaves, etc. Great job.
It’s not the governments job to clean up OUR mess. We shouldn’t make it in the first place.
Well done all of you, everyone really appreciates your hard work! Many congratulations on continually taking on the trash challenge, you are all awesome!
Love seeing this become a challenge! Keeping the beaches clean here in Florida
“Prevention is better than cure” The litter and pollution on our land masses are trapped by stormwater and it ultimately ends up in our oceans and water bodies, in turn affecting our marine life and disturbing the whole marine ecosystem. While people all around the world have made conscious efforts to remove these pollutants thanks to this challenge, yet various engineered solutions are aimed at preventing these situations from occurring. Installation of pretty basic devices like Gross Pollutant Traps can play a very significant role in preventing these pollutants from entering the water bodies. Modest devices like TRAPIT with a simple yet effective design and cost-effectiveness can be very effective in preventing this litter from entering our oceans and various other water bodies. While this challenge has been very effective and useful, I believe we require a different approach now. Instead of constantly polluting our water bodies and then ultimately spending time, money and energy
Many congratulations Florida, you are all awesome! Thank you for all your hard work in taking on the trash challenge!
Americans! Good job! Horrible that it was left long enough to get this bad :'(
These people went above and beyond #trashtag
I grew up on the beach in Destin, FL. You'd be amazed at how many people travel to such a destination for the beauty of it only to leave their mark in trash they choose to leave on the beach. When I was kid, there were regular beach clean up days that we volunteered for.
Load More Replies...Wow, what a fantastic job you all did, so many thanks to every one of you for taking on the trash challenge, and some!
I did a project once about trash and how it makes it to beaches, even though you do not live next to one. All waterways flow into each other and eventually it will make it to the beach. Just throw away your trash where it belongs and not out the window. this includes cigarette butts, these are very harmful to animals.
40 Norwegian Folk High School students from Alta spent one week picking trash at a local beach, gathering a total of 12,400kg

Hoora, a trash free zone! Many thanks for taking on the trash challenge and clearing the beach for the wildlife and humans to enjoy!
Wow that is some intricate work being done. I wonder, how much of this trash is from the water bringing it in, or that being tossed by people.

Thank you for making a huge difference for the environment and taking on the trash challenge!
It amazes me how much garbage is made. Even when it looks sparse, there's still three bags full! Oh, no that's FOUR.. man..
There was a "fact" you couldn't comment on that Americans were 5% of the population but omit (estimating) 40% of the world pollution? There is no possible way this is true. It's ridiculous when you have China, India, Russia, and other countries who pollute away. Someone doesn't like America, should have better "facts" before posting to a large audience, and missed the overall point, small work/changes make a difference. Loved the pics, disappointed with the rest.
We did our first “official” beach clean-up in Belize that past December. Before this I’d say we were classified as “beach(trash)combers”, picking up the odd straw and plastic bottle we saw on our walks. However, for Belize, we travelled there with the intention of dedicating time to picking up any trash we came across on our hikes and beach walks. We even created a social media “clean-up crew” by partnering with other travellers to do a clean-up with us at the same time.
Well done, you did an awesome job, many congratulations on taking on the trash challenge!

Wow brave person, as a bit of a Germaphobe, I don’t know I’d be able to sit in a small boat with damp trash lol.

Cudos to these folks. Leave it better than you find it is a good motto.
Thank you! We are also avid offroaders... The amount of trash we pick up, especially broken sleds and bottles, is maddening and heartbreaking.
It's fantastic that these photos are from all over the world. Great project!!
Thank you so very much, you made a huge difference to the environment!
Lots of this is due to underage drinkers finding excluded places to get smashed. Many places don't offer trash cans because the same youngsters, after they are smashed, set the trash cans on fire. Also note..It is unsafe to have glass on a beach as broken bottles can end up being hidden in the sand waiting for some unexpected victim to come along and step on it. If you are going to drink on the beach, plastic and cans only..no glass!
So cluttered in the first picture that I didn't notice it was a beach with sand. Great job.
Thank you for cleaning up the trash that thoughtless others left behind, you are awesome and my hat is off to you!

The #trashtag movement, encouraging individuals to actively clean up littered landscapes, resonates with existing efforts to address marine pollution. A noteworthy project related to this is the Seabin initiative, which directly targets ocean debris. The Seabin's approach to cleaning waterborne waste offers an innovative solution that complements the land-based actions encouraged by recent viral challenges.
Consider exploring this innovative solution for ocean waste for further insights on how technology is advancing our fight against pollution.
Some state parks in the USA used to pay a "bounty" on trash brought out above and beyond what the person brought in. It was a free fishing license or camping permit for a weekend in the future. They stopped that program just before I moved. My friends and I used to raffle the bounty off at our scout meetings or use them for rewards.
Why did they get rid of it? That's a wonderful incentive.

When in the wildernes and beaches, people should really take all the trash with them (and recycle). I'm learning to do this to all my trash too when it's possible. Of course public places should have enough of trash cans but I mean we should really take responsibility of our own waste, the endcome of products we buy and consume. Corporations don't make it easy tho with all the overpacking

We have that challenge in Sweden since 1983 (Håll Sverige rent- Keep Sweden clean), that is why it's so clean here that tourists get shocked. But we have one spot along our coast where other countries junk float ashore and it's in Bohuslän. We are also the country where plogging started, so get yourself a bag and go for a run!
Okay, am I the only one who thinks this looks so so fun? I love bagging stuff, lol. It sounds stupid but it’s like an organizational thing. Any form of it is so satisfying. I need to start paying more attention to see if I can spot anywhere dirty that needs to be bagged.
Keep it going! Whenver I hike/walk along any trail, I have gloves and a bag for picking up any litter within reach of the trail. (Where I live, going off-trail more than a few yards can mean a nasty fall...) Been doing it for years and only recently did a neighbor say, "Thank you!" Now i know why... A hashtag!
My mother in law leaves in a small town near a mountain and she often goes for walks/hikes. She always brings a trash bag with her to pick the trash around the trail. Sadly, most of her neighbors think she is an eccentric, they don't really appreciate the great nature they have there.
