Born in New York, Jodi Gerbi attended Syracuse University where she earned her B.F.A. majoring in Illustration with a concentration in Graphic Design which lead to a career in creating art for children’s clothing in the Fashion Industry for 15 years. When the company she was working for downsized, Jodi took this as an opportunity to go back to painting full time. In order to hone her skills both technically and conceptually, she went back to school earning her M.F.A. from the New York Academy of Art in 2016. Jodi has shown her work at the benefit auction Take Home a Nude at Sotheby’s, Paddle 8, Close Quarters: a group show with the organization Chashama, and a solo show in Long Island City. Recently, her work was shown in the online gallery for the Savvy Art Competition sponsored by Gamblin Artists and Trekell Art Supplies. Her painting was one of the works featured in the October 2017 print issue of Sotheby’s Magazine for the Take Home a Nude auction. In her work, Jodi Gerbi paints resilience but not always through the depiction of the figure. Her oil paintings are realistic portrayals of the garbage, trash cans and drain pipes found in her daily life. Finding the beauty in this is her way of conveying the idea that humans are often required to find something beautiful in a hard situation in order to keep going. The ability of a human being to do this is the essence of resilience. She currently paints at Reis Studios in Long Island City, New York.
