Woman Discovers Roommate’s “Gross” Habit, Gets Accused Of Disrespecting Her Culture

It’s no secret that sharing a home with loved ones can get frustrating sometimes, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise that living with a stranger might, too.

For this redditor, living with a roommate didn’t seem to be that bad, though. That was until they moved from the dorm into their own apartment. A couple of weeks in, the OP noticed a foul smell coming from the bathroom, which, she later found out, was the result of her roommate not flushing used toilet paper. When asked about it, she said it was part of her culture, which left the OP wondering if she was a jerk for asking her roommate to flush it down the toilet.

There can be many reasons for disagreements between roommates or flatmates—or family members living together, for that matter—but the state of the bathroom and the kitchen often become the main pain points. That’s because living with someone who has completely different views regarding cleanliness, for instance, can really become a problem in places that are shared and used multiple times a day.

According to a survey, carried out by Apartment Guide, keeping shared spaces clean is the main reason for tension among roommates; it is considered a problem by more than 40% of the survey respondents. (Next on the list were troubles regarding rent, communication, violations of personal space and time, and roommate having too many or too frequent guests respectively.)

Though when it comes to living with family, cleanliness of shared spaces isn’t reportedly that big of a problem; unlike paying rent. In general, the results of the survey seconded the idea that sharing a space with a family member or a friend is easier than doing it with someone you didn’t know beforehand. According to the percentage of people’s satisfaction with their arrangement, living with friends and family as the best option was followed by living with co-workers (who make surprisingly good roomies), classmates, strangers, and acquaintances respectively.

There are many countries in the world where toilet paper is thrown into a bin rather than flushed down the toilet

Delving deeper into the annoying things roommates do, Save The Student noted that, according to the National Student Accommodation Survey, leaving dirty dishes out is the mother of all disgusting habits. Next on the list are not helping with cleaning, leaving lights or appliances on, being too loud, leaving food to rot, and not removing hair from plug holes respectively.

Looking at the things that frustrate people with roommates the most, it’s clear that cleanliness is a problem for many, be it in the kitchen, the bathroom, or elsewhere. For the OP, it was the bathroom, too, that became a troublesome area because of her roommate’s habits of not flushing toilet paper. While for many, the thought alone is enough to induce gagging, for others it’s a habit they don’t think twice about.

If you’re from Australia, Northern Europe, or North America, you probably belong to the former category, but quite a few countries in South America, including the OP’s aforementioned Mexico, and elsewhere in the world aren’t used to flushing toilet paper. An avid traveler and the soul of the Mind of a Hitchhiker blog, Iris, even made a map showcasing where you should and shouldn’t flush toilet paper.

Clearly, there are many places where using a bin instead of flushing the toilet paper is customary. However, it is usually also customary for the bins to be covered with a lid and emptied out regularly, which wasn’t seemingly the case in the OP’s household. The stinky situation eventually led to the roommates getting into a fight and the redditor wondering if she was a jerk to her roomie, which fellow netizens had varying opinions on.

The TP matter was seemingly not the only problem with the roommate

Sorry, NTA. The biatch is just N A S T Y. Nothing "Mexican" or "Cultural" about it. Every race has these types of human beings. If you can't move out, lock up everything personal and place disinfectant sprays all around the apartment. Spray common areas before using, sitting, touching. LOCK YOUR ROOM, toothbrush, hygiene and other materials. I'd even stop cooking and eating at home until the year is over and you can change room mates. What you're seeing is just the tip of the iceberg. If she's THAT bad in your face and space - imagine what she does when no one is watching...

This is common practice in many parts of the world, also standard on sailing boats. We tend to use scented nappy sacks when sailing. and of course keep a lid on them as well as changing them every couple of days. But the level of smell when using the bags which are under the sink in the bathroom is insignificant even after a day or three. I can't imagine how long it would take for one person to accumulate the amount of used TP in an unsealed bin for a smell to develop such as is being reported here.

This girl was raised spoiled and her mother probably cleaned the garbage every day and obviously the girl never realized that you have to take away pee / poop covered toilet paper in a garbage can every day or it's going to stink. She's a slob who doesn't think things through, and when confronted with her ignorance, claims "the culture card". Based on this, plus using steel wool on non-stick pants twice even after being told, thinking that an ant poison capsule is an appropriate dog toy, and other examples given by op, she's not just ignorant about toilet paper, she's ignorant about everything and unwilling to learn. And you met her in school? Oh yeah she's going to be great with whatever she graduates to become.

I don't think this is real for many reasons. It's just racism rage click bait. However, I have lived in places where you don't flush toilet paper, and places without plumbing . In those places you use water, or dispose of the used tissue very regularly. Usually by burning but it depends on the locale. Storing feces for ages under the sink is no one's culture.

I agree. I live in a border state, and frequent the authentic Mexican joint near my house and visit my Mexican friends at home. Yes, Mexicans absolutely throw TP in the trashcan. I've never smelled anything, because they also have working noses and don't like stench of feces and understand how trash cans work and aren't animals. I throw used sanitary products on my wastebasket, but I certainly don't leave it until it stinks. And... If my bathroom smelled that bad, I'm sure I'd be smart enough to check the f*****g wastebasket under the sink before calling maintenance. This sounds so fake.

NTA. That is not a cultural tradition, that is something done out of necessity to not destroy the bad plumbing. The plumbing is good in your area, the paper should be flushed. At the bare minimum the room mate should dispose of the bathroom garbage daily, if not more frequently.

My BIL lived in a very old building in France. You could not flush the TP. The garbage pail had a lid, was emptied often. When he moved, the plumbing was good, do he no longer had to do this. It is not cultural, it is necessary.

OP's post indicates that the roommate has lived in the US all of her life. The roommate is just messy. For the YTA post saying 'how very white entitled ignoramus of [her]' -- was that your assigned word of the day? Jesus. My roommate in college was Iraqi (born and raised there until 15yo) and threw her used toilet paper in the trashcan as well. I politely explained to her that our plumbing could handle the toilet paper. She started flushing it. It isn't a 'cultural' thing.

Yeah...this may be normal in "many parts of the world" but it's not normal in the U.S, it has nothing to do with "culture" and even if you wanted to make that argument it's nullified by the fact that others can detect the overpowering and eye watering stench of your excrement being allowed to fester within a communal space. She should be embarrassed, but it sure seems like this is either intentionally vindictive of another example of someone invoking culture and acceptance as a means of seeing how much s**t they can make others eat.

One day they were out so I walked into their rented basement, in their bathroom i found the trashcan overflowing with MONTHS worth of her USED sanitary pads. The smell was rotting period blood filtering through the house. I confronted them both and they found it FUNNY. Some people are, and always will be, pigs. That has nothing to do with culture but is due to the fact that in some countires/Regions the pipes can't handle toilet paper. I've encountered this in Greece as well. Tell her she can just flush it with no problem or at the very least buy a bin with a lid and empty it once a day (which they do in these countries).

Throwing toilet paper away is NOT cultural. It's a bad habit from a country with awful sewers and plumbing. The infrastructure can't handle the waste, so it goes in the garbage. There's absolutely ZERO excuse to do that in America. And calling the race card is total BS from someone who obviously knows she's doing wrong, but is too sociopathic to care about other's feelings on the issue.

We couldn't flush the toilet paper in the shared dorms in China either, so had to throw it in the bin. The bathroom bin went out several times a week to make sure that nothing could build up and smell, because otherwise that would be disgusting. That is a regular thing to do in Chinese uni dorms, they manage it without causing a stink in a 12-man dorm.

NTA. I'm passionate about cultural humility and social justice, both personally and professionally (I'm a case manger and counselor for a population that is both underserved and often looked down upon). I would look upon housemates cultural norms with curiosity, but she also needs to recognize she's living in a shared household and there are some bare minimum cleanliness standards that need to be met. (I also question if this is really a cultural norm for her, but that's not really my place, or even the point.) Regardless, she can compromise. She can take the trash out daily, or get one of those diaper bins that lock in the stench. Her other household behaviors are disrespectful as well. She can meet her needs in a way that doesn't destroy your peace and quiet and ruin your belongings. I'm not sure what's going on with her, but you are definitely NTA here

2) You might want to start locking all of your belongings in your bedroom, until you can spirit non-essentials away to a friend's place or a storage facility. She can't destroy what she can't access. If possible, purchase a mini-fridge to go in your bedroom. Arrange with the landlord to do an inspection, giving 48 hours' notice. Let's see if your roommate will forego "culture" in favor of keeping a roof over her head. And whatever you do, do NOT lift a finger to help her clean up the mess she's made. Worry about YOUR space. Be ready to exit this fiasco, and be thankful that you will never have to deal with her again.

1) The roommate's behavior isn't "cultural." It's assholish. Contact the landlord, and let him/her do a walk-through, taking notes and snapping pictures. Tell them what you're dealing with on a regular basis. If nothing else, it'll cover your backside in regards to property damage and causing a pest problem. If you have any family in the area, let them know what's going on and see if you can stay with them for a while. If the roommate happens to come back to the apartment while the landlord is there and demands to know what's up, look her in the eye and say nothing. Not. One. Word. She'll get the message, loud and clear.

Yeah, no. I am Mexican, grew up in the U.S. Growing up my we always threw away tp in a waste basket next to the toilet, mainly because this is what my parents knew and in Mexico they did not flush toilet paper. In fact, I did not know people did this in their homes until I was older. That being said, we took out the bathroom trash and bathroom was cleaned frequently. As an adult now with my own home, I flush tp (although my parents still don't). That is not a culture issue. She is a slob who does not know how to pick up or clean after herself. In many if not most of the countries where it is customary to throw toilet paper in the trash it is also customary to wash with water after using the toilet so the paper has been used only to dry "down below" and therefore there is no smell. I don't know if this is the case in Mexico but definitely is in many of the countries shown in the map.

This is not a cultural issue. This is a mental health issue. She is hoarding bodily excretions, using her religion to oppress your culture, failing to maintain safe food storage habits after you stated your boundaries, "playing with your dog" by encouraging it to consume a clearly harmful substance, using her "culture" as an excuse for harmful behaviours. All of these behaviours are covert aggression against you and your safety. If you are both on the lease, you need to move out ASAP before she escalates to more directly harmful acts. A broken lease will not kill you or your dog.

I live in Texas. People here will argue for their right to throw their p**s and s**t stained toilet paper in the trashcan where employees or homeowners then have to handle it. It's gross. There will be signs saying to PLEASE flush used toilet paper in the toilet. This isn't a cultural thing, this isn't a dance, a religion, a food dish, or outfit. Throwing toilet paper in the trashcan instead of of the toilet is a behavior made due to inadequate plumbing throughout Mexico. That problem doesn't exist here. I have a friend who argued with me over it in my own home. He was talking to me about culture. This isn't a cultural thing, we have adequate plumbing in this country and leaving your used paper is unhygienic because there is a clear alternative. Why are people fighting this? Just flush it. Edit: Id like to add it's "culturally common" for people to warn you if there is something odd about the toilet, if they have a septic tank, if it doesn't have a strong pull, so you can behave accordingly.

For the YTA post saying 'how very white entitled ignoramus of [her]' -- was that your assigned word of the day? Jesus. My roommate in college was Iraqi (born and raised there until 15yo) and threw her used toilet paper in the trashcan as well. That has nothing to do with culture but is due to the fact that in some countires/Regions the pipes can't handle toilet paper. I've encountered this in Greece as well. Throwing toilet paper away is NOT cultural. It's a bad habit from a country with awful sewers and plumbing. The infrastructure can't handle the waste, so it goes in the garbage. There's absolutely ZERO excuse to do that in America.
