This girl was raised spoiled and her mother probably cleaned the garbage every day and obviously the girl never realized that you have to take away pee / poop covered toilet paper in a garbage can every day or it's going to stink. NTA. That is not a cultural tradition, that is something done out of necessity to not destroy the bad plumbing. The plumbing is good in your area, the paper should be flushed. At the bare minimum the room mate should dispose of the bathroom garbage daily, if not more frequently.

OP's post indicates that the roommate has lived in the US all of her life. The roommate is just messy. My roommate in college was Iraqi (born and raised there until 15yo) and threw her used toilet paper in the trashcan as well. I politely explained to her that our plumbing could handle the toilet paper. She started flushing it. It isn't a 'cultural' thing.

Yeah...this may be normal in "many parts of the world" but it's not normal in the U.S, it has nothing to do with "culture" and even if you wanted to make that argument it's nullified by the fact that others can detect the overpowering and eye watering stench of your excrement being allowed to fester within a communal space. NTA, she's just a disgusting pig. A roommate in Colorado had his girlfriend move in, for weeks i couldn't figure out the horrific smell in the house. One day they were out so I walked into their rented basement, in their bathroom i found the trashcan overflowing with MONTHS worth of her USED sanitary pads. The smell was rotting period blood filtering through the house. I confronted them both and they found it FUNNY. Some people are, and always will be, pigs. That has nothing to do with culture but is due to the fact that in some countires/Regions the pipes can't handle toilet paper. I've encountered this in Greece as well. Tell her she can just flush it with no problem or at the very least buy a bin with a lid and empty it once a day (which they do in these countries).

Perhaps people did that in Mexico years ago because they needed to, but it has nothing to do with their "culture". She's gross. I think you should find another flatmate. I very rarely call something fake on BP. But I don't believe this one. The main reason is that the OP scrubs down the entire bathroom but doesn't look under the sink. Why would you not check under the sink and go through all of that trouble?

1) The roommate's behavior isn't "cultural." It's assholish. Contact the landlord, and let him/her do a walk-through, taking notes and snapping pictures. Tell them what you're dealing with on a regular basis. If nothing else, it'll cover your backside in regards to property damage and causing a pest problem. If you have any family in the area, let them know what's going on and see if you can stay with them for a while. If the roommate happens to come back to the apartment while the landlord is there and demands to know what's up, look her in the eye and say nothing. Not. One. Word. She'll get the message, loud and clear.

Yeah, no. I am Mexican, grew up in the U.S. Growing up my we always threw away tp in a waste basket next to the toilet, mainly because this is what my parents knew and in Mexico they did not flush toilet paper. In fact, I did not know people did this in their homes until I was older. That being said, we took out the bathroom trash and bathroom was cleaned frequently. As an adult now with my own home, I flush tp (although my parents still don't). That is not a culture issue. She is a slob who does not know how to pick up or clean after herself. Also, I always take offense of my fellow Mexicans that claim Halloween is the "devil's holiday". We have a whole day for the dead cut the bs 🙄

This is not a cultural issue. This is a mental health issue. She is hoarding bodily excretions, using her religion to oppress your culture, failing to maintain safe food storage habits after you stated your boundaries, "playing with your dog" by encouraging it to consume a clearly harmful substance, using her "culture" as an excuse for harmful behaviours. All of these behaviours are covert aggression against you and your safety. If you are both on the lease, you need to move out ASAP before she escalates to more directly harmful acts. A broken lease will not kill you or your dog.

Bad roommates can cross cultures. Most of this comes down to not having learned how to be a grownup, living away from your parents, and refusing to learn. You just have a bad roommate. Find a new place.

This roommate seems to forget she is not the only one living there. If she can't start showing some respect then she needs to find another place to live. The roommate doesn't seem to understand personal hygiene and food safety.

Why is she allowing this nutcase to live with her? There's no way I would live with someone who can't properly store raw meats, throws their religious agenda around and uses a container of poison to play with my pet. I'd be finding another roommate ASAP.

I live in Texas. People here will argue for their right to throw their p**s and s**t stained toilet paper in the trashcan where employees or homeowners then have to handle it. It's gross. There will be signs saying to PLEASE flush used toilet paper in the toilet. This isn't a cultural thing, this isn't a dance, a religion, a food dish, or outfit. Throwing toilet paper in the trashcan instead of of the toilet is a behavior made due to inadequate plumbing throughout Mexico. That problem doesn't exist here. I have a friend who argued with me over it in my own home. He was talking to me about culture. This isn't a cultural thing, we have adequate plumbing in this country and leaving your used paper is unhygienic because there is a clear alternative. Why are people fighting this? Just flush it. Edit: Id like to add it's "culturally common" for people to warn you if there is something odd about the toilet, if they have a septic tank, if it doesn't have a strong pull, so you can behave accordingly.
